Fundamental to our approach has been a deep and ongoing conversation with the Providence community about the needs of Trinity Square and the role of design in improving the neighborhood for all its residents. It goes without saying that cities can no longer be designed purely from the comforts of the studio, and we have come to recognize through many months of meetings,presentations, and discussions, that a sketch has as much power in its ability to catalyze debate as it does to set forth an aesthetic vision. It is a process of a team of RISD Architecture and Landscape Architecture students in their efforts to formulate a version of this other city. To that end, the concept designs that have been produced will be developed in further detail over the Winter and begin implementation in Summer 2016.

In our team, I’m working with Nandi Lu and Senbo Yang on programming Boulevard section and provide landscape stratege for the whole team. The main strategy here is to provide vivid landscape by mixseeding colorful native species. People will enjoy diverse colors during different seasons, entire color scheme for our site.

Boston seaport area is a landfill area with ocean view and low site energy, it connects Boston downtown area and South Boston area. This project is layering wetland (flooded area) and living zone to establish a community for people to live with water. By lifting new type of residential buildings and roads, cutting ground in coastal zone, and adding open space, Seaport area will be a growing area. Landscape and living condition here will be changeable along sea level rising. Different water table will influence the space people use and the species grows there.

Almost 45% OF RAIN WATER will run off because of the HARD SURFACE.

PLAYING WITH TIDE

This project is a tidal park designed by re-grading the ground and constructing water edge. By stretching out and pushing in coastal line, people are able to play with water and plants in diverse condition. Due to the direction of tide, the new edge will be a protected harbor for vegetation and kayaks. Landform created by cut and fill also provide people with diverse experiences. In some places, their view are blocked when they goes down. In some other parts, they could walk up and overview the whole site and the city view from another side.

FLOATING WOOD DECK Different materials are used on the north coast. STONE as paving to allow people walking along the coast; GABION WALL as retaining construction to let water come in and out;

FLOATING WOOD DECK is placed to give people more possibilities to feel and play with the water and plants. It can be lifted by the tide so that people can always walk on the water.

THRESHOLD/ PHENOMENA/ CLASSROOM

EXPERIENCING WITH THRESHOLD

This project on Tillinghast farm is to design an outdoor classroom based on the place with transition. Site exploration has three investigations: of ground, of phenomena, and of site spatial transitions. The site was chosen based on those investigations. The top of hill is the point that has dramatic transition with topography, hydrology, vegetation. The outdoor classroom is designed by emphasizing the threshold by cut a steep slope, planting seasonal changing trees and adding materials. According to existing circulation, same materials and design method are used in an implicit way to give an entrance for people to go to the outdoor classroom.

SOIL STUDY Dig into ground to see the composition of soil at different locations on site. The soil horizon model represents the layers of ground as they change from the surface to a depth of 8 feet below this surface.

Walking along the section, we can see the changes from the small sketches from the upland to the beach. The ground transect model represents the change in surface topography, vegetation and the hydrology condition of the section.

PROGRAMMING OUTDOOR CLASSROOM + ENTRANCE Cut a steep slope near the new threshold. Plant different species of trees under the slope, let people on the top touch the canopy and see seasonal changes during the year. They can also see through the grove to have a ocean view on the top.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM =

MATERIALs and STRUCTURES make the slope become the most attractive point in site and people can walk on different elevation to experience more. ENTRANCE DESIGN Topography edition and red materials are used in the same way to keep the continuity with the classroom. The cut mount and red steel on one side will be indications for people to restrict their circulation and sight and lead them to the classroom.

This thesis project is about intera users’ perceptions of their enviro which people perceive space.

Farragut Square is located at northwest Washington DC, right next to the National Mall and many traffic stations. It is a connection point for DuPont Circ and engage within. At present the site it has lots of people passing through it every day. However, it doesn't allow many ways to access the site itself or e restricted to a linear pattern or stops at irregular points. It is popular because of its convenient, central location rather than its spatial quality.

As a popular open space in an urban setting, Farragut Square is a relatively flat space. It has a slope in topography; however, the surface of the slope d and that is surrounded by a fence, making it difficult to access.

TEMPERATURE &TEXTURE OF MATEIAL FOR HAPTIC EXPERIENCE During the site visit, I used a temperature recorder to measure the temperature of different material surfaces in order to relate them to how the user was feeling on the circle diagram. It is apparent that natural materials like grass and leaves are cooler than the constructed materials such as the wooden benches and granite pavements on site.

SUNLIGHT & MOVEMENT MAPPING Based on the observations recorded on site, people's movement is related to changes in temperature, especially in relation to shadows. On a sunny day in late spring, more people would like to stay within a shaded area. The study of sunlight hours for the whole year is overlapped with the mapping of people's movement.

GUILIN HOTEL This renovation project aims to transform a large empty building, originally planned to host several restaurants, into a boutique hotel with 100 bedrooms and several public services. I designed the outdoor landscape for this project, including PLANTING DESIGN, LIGHTING DESIGN, WATERFRONT WOODEN DECK AND CONSTRUCTION DETAIL DESIGN.

OTHER WORKS GIS ANALYSIS RESTROOM SERVICE IN MOUNT. YUELU As students who lives in the foothills,we find that restrooms in Mount Yuelu are not enough for so many visitors. At first,we did some questionnaires and got users feeling about it,then we interviewed the administrator of Mt. Yuelu.So we decide to do some analyze by GIS and mathematic model,try to find some possible ways to improve this situation.

BOOK DESIGN & BOOK BINDING THE OCEAN BOOK Ocean in different mood. Photos were taken during my trip in Asia, Europe and America. The book is purly black and white, it is structural and is able to interactive with through drawing on the tracing paper. TOPOGRAPHY BOOK To bring landscape elements back to book design, use layers in gradient color to mimic topography and represent in both side of the book to give it more depth of view.
