Welcome to Applewood Books, publishers of America’s living past. Since we were founded in 1976, we

have published over 5,000 works, of which we’ve sold many millions of individual copies. Our mission is to build a picture of America and American culture through primary sources, to distribute them widely, and to provide a positive experience for all who come in contact with us. This mission has led us to publish a wide range of interesting books in our 37-year history. Over the last few years, we have been busy photographing all of the children’s books in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society. Over the last few months, over 100 of those books have been brought into print, and we will publish another 800 titles before our next catalog. But it’s not just child’s play for us. Over the next two years, we will continue to publish to our mission. As the world of publishing evolves, as people have an opportunity to read and enjoy so many books from the past, online and in print, we cherish our role even more: to select and highlight those books that tell the American story. In 2010 we acquired Commonwealth Editions, one of the country’s leading regional publishers whose books we had distributed. Over the last two years, we have supported Commonwealth’s rich backlist and continue to add new regional titles for New England and beyond. In addition, we have been partnering with many publishers to make their books available to the broader market as well. Now, History Compass, Back Bay Press, Boston Women’s Heritage Trail, and, recently, Memoirs Unlimited, the New-York Historical Society, and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum books all are available from us, giving our customers one place to go to find the best in historical and regional publishing. This catalog represents our most popular selections, but it is by no means all we offer. Fortunately, our website is able to keep up with all the books we publish, as it gets updated daily. Come visit us at awb.com and search our currently available selections by subject, author, title, or key word. Some things never change. As it has been for more than two decades, our catalog cover is made from an antique fruit label. Also, the titles are still organized chronologically by original publication date, more or less, though we have separated out some popular series for ease of use. We have a helpful index in the back, so that anyone interested in books by subject or title can get right to it. In the title index we have also included some of our better-selling books that, for space reasons, could not be included in the printed catalog. Information about these other can also be found on our new and improved website. If you haven’t been there yet, I invite you to take a browse at applewoodbooks.com. I hope you enjoy our offerings. We look forward to serving you this year and for many years to come. Let us know how we can make your Applewood experience even better. Best,

Phil Zuckerman President

The 38-volume Judy Bolton series was written during the 35 years from 1932 to 1967. It is one of the most successful and enduring girls’ series ever published. The Judy Bolton books are noted not only for their fine plots and thrilling stories, but also for their realism and their social commentary. Unlike most other series characters, Judy and her friends age and mature in the series and often deal with important social issues. To many, Judy is a feminist in the best light—smart, capable, courageous, nurturing, and always unwavering in her true beliefs; a perfect role model.

An authentic reproduction of the original edition of the beloved Christmas classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

I

n 1939 Robert L. May, a copywriter working at Chicago’s Montgomery Ward & Co., wrote a holiday story at the request of his employer. Almost two and a half million copies of the little tale about a reindeer with a shiny red nose were given away to all the children who visited Montgomery Ward stores that year. The rest is history. Over seventy years later, the beloved classic is once again available in a hardcover faithful facsimile of the 1939 Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer, with original text and original Denver Gillen illustrations.  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer inspired the 1949 song, which was written by Johnny Marks and sung by Gene Autry. This holiday favorite floods the airwaves every year, introducing new generations to the story.  Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer also inspired the 1964 animated television special, which airs several times each holiday season. It is the longest-running Christmas TV special.  Applewood Books last offered this facsimile of the original edition over ten years ago, and sold more than one million copies!
