That’s really encouraging for us. This month we are talking about the food tech startups. The past few months have seen a number of startups working in the food-tech industry managing to raise massive funds. The basic idea is to provide you easy access to on-demand delicious and home cooked daily-meals at affordable prices.
With options like aloo paratha, masala pasta, butter chicken, paneer kulcha, the ‘food delivery’ startups are catering to the low-priced daily meals market, and using the technology to solve the challenges faced by customers in this market. It’s tempting to say that the ‘food delivery space’ is getting crowded, each having its own USP when compared to the other one. Add to that, you have the option to narrow down your search using filters such as cost for two, cuisine and delivery time. The recommended menu with pictures for each restaurant makes life so easy if you are ordering for the first time. Checkout process is simple and easy. Though there is no minimum order amount, but you will have to pay Rs. 30 extra as delivery fee if your order is below Rs. 150/-. Q. What are the major challenges in your line of business and how did/do you overcome them? The first and foremost challenge was making telecom operators agree to a 60 to 70% revenue share in favor of the merchants. Historically, telecom operators in India only paid 30% to content and application providers. Overcoming this challenge took almost 2 years of working closely with mobile operators.
The other challenge was in convincing merchants that 60 to 70% revenue share is better than 98% or 95% they get from credit card/wallet companies. They understood that with Paychamp they would be able to monetize and reach those users from whom they would have never been able to get a single penny. The key challenge that lies ahead is to convince telecom operators and the regulators to open operator billing for payment of non-digital goods and services and also increasing the revenue share for such services to 95%. Q. What are the new trends you are expecting in the “payment solution” industry in near future?

ith Myntra shutting down website and Flipkart's following announcement to go mobile app only, the path of e-commerce is standing at a new crossroads. It was just a few years ago that most of these big name platforms started their journey through small websites. As e-commerce business bloomed, India also saw the colossal rise of Apple and Android smartphones, mobile apps and app stores. This opened up new opportunities for the e-commerce business. Many websites quickly pushed out apps on respective app stores, which became a big deal. A constant rise in smartphone and tablet sales consumers saw e-giants investing more resources on apps and considerably less on websites. For e-giants like Flipkart and Myntra, adopting the app only model is a very smart move. First of all, they will save significantly on website maintenance and infrastructure costs. Secondly, they can use those savings to implement a centralized viral marketing structure for the Indian subcontinent in order to defeat competitors on the rise i.e. Snapdeal and Amazon, who still prefer to opt for the older business model. Let's talk numbers. Myntra, a part of Flipkart, saw 90% of traffic and 75% of its entire revenue generated through apps, before it made the decision to switch. Flipkart itself saw a tenfold rise of up to 60% in mobile app traffic over the span of one and a half years, which is what lead to its own announcement. Powerhouses like Snapdeal and Amazon also keep pushing redirects and pop-ups to consumers telling them to switch to apps. There are a few underlying reasons:
• Significant cost savings: Eliminating the need for a desktop website or responsive website design saves a business lots of cash. One can rather use all their saving into strengthening their approach towards the mobile app platform. This is the reason that all the e-giants have been pushing people into using their apps, by introducing discounts or offers. • App analytics are much powerful: Mobile apps can track user data, location and usage patterns and analyze them thoroughly compared to websites. In app, marketing features are also aplenty that can help define better update structures and revenue based strategies (read Offers/Discounts) in the long run. • Decline in desktop sales: A constant decline in desktop and
notebook PC sales might also be the reason for most e-commerces to rather opt for a growing technology rather than one that is on the fall. Forecasts predict a stronger shift in tablet/smartphone sales by 2018 while regular desktop sales keep dropping downwards.

If we look closely we can think of several possibilities that might have caused this change -
• Inadequate display area results in too many redirects in order to verify information. This leads to a waste of time, forcing users to adapt other competitive solutions. The statement, “Don’t force people into doing what you want.” also plays a key role here. • Poor data connectivity is a problem. It leads to failed transactions and further hassles, especially in developing nations. Some consumers prefer to do their shopping on a strong and reliable broadband connection under their roof. • Memory restrictions on smartphones lead users into uninstalling apps. India is infested with low end Android smartphones, which run out of resources and crash quite often, even under the modest of loads. Going app only might result in a significant loss of revenue.

• Feature phone users still account for a portion of mobile users. They are still not used to the logic of smartphones, let alone downloading and using mobile apps. Going app only and removing websites makes it impossible for them to ever get familiar with this technology.

Players like Snapdeal, Amazon and eBay are still concerned with these points and keep providing their services on all platforms. Instead of shutting down their websites they are diverting traffic to their respective apps by introducing lucrative offers. For instance, Shopclue’s latest app only discount campaign - “6 se 9 ghar wapsi sale” is creating a lot of buzz among consumers. This is a smart way to please customers while baiting them to install apps on their devices. In a real life scenario, a small section of our population still like viewing/ comparing products on a large screen/ multiple tabs before making a purchase. Moreover, consumers have a general skepticism in being tracked (read geotagging and such) or sharing sensitive bank details through apps. In e-commerce, it will be more about their strategy. People are going to switch to apps eventually. But for Flipkart or anyone following suite, they have to brave these factors and come up with a solution to make people switch faster. It’s the only way their plan will succeed in the future.
What is the ideal approach? The current situation for e-commerce in our country can be attributed to how differently it came to play. In major nations like USA, the primary rise in the e-commerce business came parallely with the increasing popularity of desktop PCs. For India, smartphones and tablets were the technologies that complimented it. With the exponential rise of smartphones, wearables and mobile apps, going apponly is an excellent move on the part of Myntra and Flipkart. There was a time when companies had to spend considerable PR before the launch of an app and here we stand with the call to eliminate websites. Apps have become a proven way for e-giants to devise profitable marketing plans by studying collected usage patterns and localizing the user experience. But rather than shutting down websites entirely, companies should focus on optimizing the in-app user experience and experiment on different app revenue strategies to entice consumers further. Furthermore, as Snapdeal and Amazon still offer fully functional websites Flipkart will heavily lose out on SEO/ SEM based affiliate traffic. If they are really uninterested in spending resources on their websites they can just let them be as
it is, only update/add product listings, remove all website ads online and divert all traffic by introducing offers/discounts on purchasing through the app. In the next 4-5 years the craze for apps will keep on rising and Flipkart’s masterful gamble might just change the face of Indian Business forever.
