The First Tee- Our Mission: To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill lifeenhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.
The First Tee is a 501c3 nonprofit youth development organization. Its purpose is to give young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.

One of the most pressing concerns for the entire golf industry is the strategy for growing participation in this great game. While there are over 25 million active golfers in the United States, that number has been falling for more than a decade and without a significant infusion of young golfers, the number will continue to fall. According to the National Golf Foundation, 463 million rounds were played last year- down from 518 million in 2000. And beyond the world of golf, a growing concern in this country is the quality of character development education for young people in all segments of society. Preparing our young people for success throught life residents have been addressing this problem head-on through The First Tee organizations. The mission of the not-for-profit First Tee is to “impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.�
Honesty Golf is unique from other sports in that players regularly call penalties on themselves and report their own score.
“The First Tee of the Grand Strand uses golf as a vehicle to further character education,” explains Rebecca Albin, executive director of the First Tee of the Grand Strand. This year, over 13,000 youngsters living in Horry and Georgetown counties will be impacted by the various programs that The First Tee offers. One of those kids is Lance Vu, a 12 year old who has participated in The First Tee for the last five years and plays on the golf team at Socastee
Integrity Golf is a game of etiquette and composure. Players are responsible for their actions and personal conduct on the golf course even at times when others may not be looking.
High School. Lance was selected to play in the recent First Tee fundraiser tournament at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawleys Island where he hit shots with Golf Channel personalities Kelly Tilghman and Charlie Rymer. With a calm disposition and a smooth golf swing, Lance dreams of one day being a Masters or US Open champion. Another rising star of the program is 17 year old Ashley Sloup, a senior at South Brunswick High School who will be attending Winthrop University in Rock Hill next year as a member of their golf team. A member of the First Tee since 2003, she has the distinct honor of being selected to participate in the Nature Valley First Tee Open
at Pebble Beach, an official Champions Tour event held September 27-29 and televised internationally on Golf Channel. The 81 young men and women playing at Pebble Beach range in age from 14 to 18 and were selected by a national panel of judges that evaluated participants’ playing ability and comprehension of the life skills and character education learned through their involvement with The First Tee. This year, just four students from North Carolina and one from South Carolina will make the trip out to the west coast. Confidence Confidence plays a key role in the level of play that one achieves. Players can increase confidence in their abilities by being positive and focusing on something they are doing well regardless of the outcome.
Set on the 28 acre learning campus of The First Tee of Brunswick County, the academy has the capacity to host 50 youth participants and 16 counselors/ coaches. Each summer, about 400 participants will attend the Academy’s in-residence experience designed to immerse them in the values education, leadership, life skills and healthy habits. Community support and participation is critical to the ongoing success of the organization. All funds raised in the Grand Strand stay in the community to directly fund local programs and activities. The First Tee is always accepting donations of golf clubs, golf balls and apparel. Albin emphasized
that almost 100% of the training is done by local volunteers, giving generously of their time to the children. The First Tee is much more than a traditional junior golf program as it offers a range of educational and character building opportunities such as The First Tee National School Program for local physical education teachers of grades K through 5th which introduces golf, The First Tee Nine Core Values™ and The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits to elementary

students during physical education classes. This education helps give students a lifelong recreation and physical fitness activity. It also assists in developing appreciation for the positive personal and social values associated with the game of golf.
Perseverance To succeed in golf, players must continue through bad breaks and their own mistakes, while learning from past experiences.
Teachers and principals report a positive impact on their students as a result of their First Tee experience. Examples include improved classroom behavior, showing greater respect for teachers and peers and fewer disciplinary issues. A recent independent research study of First Tee participants documents that a remarkable 73% reported high confidence in their ability to do well academically. Currently, all ten of the elementary schools in Georgetown county and 14 elementary schools in Horry county participate in this superb program. Nearly 100 golf courses in coastal North and South Carolina support the work of the First Tee through the Carol S. Petrea Youth Golf Foundation.

Judgement Using good judgment is very important in golf. It comes into play when deciding on strategy, club selection, when to play safe and when to take a chance, the type of shot players consider executing, as well as making healthy choices on and off the golf course.

On The Green Magazine sent out a survey to our list of email subscribers to find out which golf holes were their favorites in the Myrtle Beach area. The criteria for judging was to choose the holes that gave the most golfing enjoyment. Each respondent could name up to three golf holes. Not necessarily the highest “rated” or most scenic, just the ones that they really enjoyed playing - the holes that they talked about later with their golfing buddies. The usual suspects received votes - The Dunes Club, Caledonia, Glen Dornoch, Kings North and more. The votes didn’t stick to a few well-known golf holes. Surprisingly there were 190 different holes listed as favorites. Several courses had multiple holes listed as favorites. These courses may not have “won” the contest but if 4 or 5 holes out of 18 are chosen as people’s favorites that is a course worth playing.
Reader’s Choice Top Three Golf Holes Glen Dornoch #16 A par 4 that heads directly toward the Intracoastal Waterway. Ideally your first shot rolls to a stop near the top of the hill without rolling over into the marshy waste area. Your next shot will have a hard time hitting the green and sticking without going too far over or to the right into the marsh. Try to ignore the passing yachts and fishing boats as you putt out. This is a hole that requires planning and positioning as well as accurate shots.
Caledonia #18 Perhaps the most striking aesthetic feature of the plantation is the impressive avenue of 150-year-old live oaks leading to the clubhouse steps. The picturesque par 4 18th hole borders the Plantation’s old rice field and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green at the foot of the clubhouse where onlookers may be sitting in rocking chairs betting on shots’ results.

Get it down the neck of the fairway and as close to the hazard on the right as you dare to make the approach a bit easier. Watch out if the wind is blowing, because it’s normally into your face on the approach shot. Even more exciting when your buddies are sitting on the porch of the clubhouse watching the approach shot carry over the water and marsh to the green.”

Celebrities including Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Ed “Too Tall” Jones and Joe Morgan helped end prostate cancer at the Sixth Annual Know Your Score Celebrity Golf Tournament and Gala on August 24 at the Grande Dunes golf club in Myrtle Beach. The event, which benefited ZERO — The End of Prostate Cancer, raised more than $70,000 to fight prostate cancer through promoting early detection, education and research. “We’re proud that so many sports and entertainment celebrities came together for the sixth year in a row to fight this disease that affects so many men and their families,” said Jamie Bearse, CEO of ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer. “Know Your Score has become a tradition in Myrtle Beach, building awareness of prostate cancer and bringing us closer to the cure.” The Know Your Score campaign educates men about their risk for pros- (from left) NFL’s Ed “Too Tall” Jones, NBA’s John Starks, tate cancer and encourages at-risk men to “know their score” by getting a NFL’s Cornelius Bennett and NBA’s Lenny Wilkins prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. Participants in the tournament, including a team of prostate cancer survivors, got to play a round of golf with a celebrity and attend the Friday night gala, which featured a sit down dinner and entertainment from comedian Henry Cho and singer Billy Mac. Other notable celebrity attendees included boxer Gerry Cooney, hall of fame billiards star Ewa Laurance and former NFL players Richard Dent, Thurman Thomas and Sterling Sharpe. “Men spend four hours or more playing a round of golf,” said Tom Quinn, ZERO Board Member and Founder of the Know Your Score Tournament. “As a prostate cancer patient with advanced disease, my hope is that men will take some time on the golf course to discuss their heath and learn about their risk for prostate cancer.” All proceeds from Know Your Score Golf Tournament and Gala go directly to the fight to end prostate cancer by promoting early detection, education and research that will lead to the cure. For a third year in a row, Atlantic Urology Clinics and Carolina Regional Cancer Center served as title sponsors for the event. The End of Prostate Cancer is a national nonprofit organization with the mission to end prostate cancer. As a leader in the fight against prostate cancer, ZERO advances research, encourages action, and provides education and support to men and their families. The motto at the Father & Son event is; any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad. The most humbling and human of all sporting pursuits, golf teaches us patience, honesty, integrity, and persistence. Throughout the course of every round, we recognize the fleeting nature of success and the constant hard work required to sustain it. We learn to brush off disappointment, while vowing to do better the next time. We learn that we’re vulnerable to mistakes. We learn to project humility when victorious and to be gracious in defeat; each one a worthwhile trait our dads try to instill in us as we come of age.
This year’s 2013 Father & Son Team Classic had a “down to the wire” finish filled with clutch shots and holed putts. Bryan and Bryce Kendrick of Knoxville, Tenn. nipped two - time winners Gary Carpenter Sr. and Jr. by a stroke to the take the overall Gross Championship. The Kendricks shot 65 in Thursdays Texas Scramble format, 66 in Fridays Best Ball Format, and 64 in Saturdays Captain’s Choice Format. For the first time in the tournament’s history – a National Senior Division was established. This years National Senior Champion went to the team of Donnie and Kris Blanks. The Blanks’ are no strangers to this annual event. The Blanks’ won the first two Father & Son Team Classic events, 16 years ago. This was their first trip back to the tournament since 1999. Due to Kris’ PGA TOUR medical exemption for 2013, his usually busy schedule allowed he and his father to come back and compete.
Each year in July, fathers and sons from around the world gather in Myrtle Beach to take part in a threeday tournament that has become the largest father-son golf event in the world. Last year’s 54-hole competition drew over 900 players from 46 states and 7 foreign countries - 24 flights in all. Eligibility for the tournament is open to fathers and sons; grandfathers and grandsons; stepfathers and stepsons; fathers and sons in law; and uncles and nephews. However, the motto at the Father & Son event is; any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad. The tournament allows any combination of players on a team as long as there is a generation gap between them, they do not need to be related.
This year’s tournament benefited the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization that gives back to the families of our brave military. Over twelve thousand dollars was raised in this event alone. 2013 Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fall Inductees Enshrined

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday announces Casper Benton and Ed Jerdon have been named as the 2013 inductees to the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame and were honored at Pine Lakes Country Club, Aug. 25. A true pioneer, Casper Benton left Myrtle Beach in the 1920s for New York to learn the business of golf course construction. He returned in 1927 to build Ocean Forest Country Club, the first course in what would become the “Golf Capital of the U.S.”. Benton lived on-site while it was under construction and became its first greenskeeper, nurturing a layout that helped lead Myrtle Beach to national acclaim.
Recognizing the untapped potential of the South Strand, Jerdon and his investors built Sea Gull Golf Club in 1965, paving the way for many exceptional courses to follow on Pawleys Island. They built and owned Quail Creek and the East and West courses at Burning Ridge – layouts that helped make Highway 501 a golf hotbed. Jerdon was also the impetus behind Indian Wells Golf Club and International Club. Jerdon served as president of the Dunes Club and Surf Club, two of the Grand Strand’s most prestigious clubs. In addition to his golf work, he also spearheaded the construction of numerous churches, schools and hotels.
Benton then built the Dunes Club, the area’s most iconic course. His namesake company, C.L. Benton & Sons, also constructed Tidewater Golf Club, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Plantation. All of these courses have been ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest. The Benton family continues to be an integral part of the Myrtle Beach golf community.
“Both Casper and Ed are true visionaries who both saw the potential of the Grand Strand as a world-class golf destination long before anyone else,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “We are truly indebted to their pioneering spirit and sense of community and their place in Hall of Fame is richly deserved.”
In the mid-1960s Myrtle Beach was home to just 10 golf courses, but visionary builder Edward Jerdon saw a prosperous future for the sleepy beach community. Jerdon – one of the most accomplished builders in the South – built and co-owned six Grand Strand layouts, helping jump-start the area’s emergence as golf’s most popular destination.
Established to pay tribute to the men and women who have played significant roles in the development of the Myrtle Beach area golf industry, the Hall of Fame was founded in 2009. Its opening coincided with the reopening of Pine Lakes – formerly the Grand Strand’s first course, Ocean Forest Country Club.

SOUTH STRAND The Founders Club was voted 2011 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association. Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship and a US Open qualifier, Prestwick is a sculpted layout with deep bunkers, giant berms and those famous Dye bulkheads framing many of the TifDwarf greens. Whispering Pines Golf Course is located on the south side of Myrtle Beach near dozens of oceanfront resort hotels, but its quiet setting has no adjacent housing. Whispering Pines is the closest area course to the Myrtle Beach Jetport. The park-like layout has recently been enhanced with the installation of new TifEagle greens. The onsite golf school is yet another convenient reason to include Whispering Pines on any Grand Strand vacation package.
North Strand Burning Ridge Golf Club located on highway 501, is the proud recipient of the 2006 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year award and the 2006 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year award. This course is a true test of Old World golf. The Moorland is a P.B. Dye design and was recently name by Golf Digest as one of the “Fifty Toughest Courses in America” at #37. It remains one of the most unique courses on the East Coast. Dye’s panache for multilevel
fairways and greens and signature bulkheads has transformed this land into one of Myrtle Beach’s most requested courses. The Legends Parkland stands on its own merits. The Parkland is modeled after the style of architects Alister MacKenzie (Augusta National) and George Thomas (Riviera Country Club) and was designed to compliment nature so closely as to make the layout indistinguishable from nature itself. This is a common position at impact by most golfers - trying to help the ball in the air with the hands. Notice how the grip is behind the ball and the right shoulder is back and under at impact. This is the result of the excess leg movement in the backswing.
This is a solid top of backswing position. The lower body is stable with very little leg movement and a solid shoulder turn. Notice the back is facing the target and the club is short of parallel. This proves that length of swing is not the reason for distance.

Rich Brennan Wins 30th Annual Golf.com World Am in Myrtle Beach Besting a field of 98 flight winners, Rich Brennan from Maumee, Ohio shot a net 62 (gross 83) at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Club during Friday’s World Championship Playoff to capture the 30th annual Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship. Sam Owenby from Conway, S.C., shot net 63 (gross 87) to finish second.

Additionally, Robert Whaley and Ron Arledge from Jacksonville, Fla., shot a team total of 139 to win the International Pairs event and earn the right to compete in Scotland next year in the IP World Finals. The World Championship Playoff is the annual culmination of the Golf.com World Am, a 72-hole net, stroke play event. This year, more than 3,300 players from 46 states and 27 countries vied for the honor of hoisting the victor’s trophy. Players are arranged into flights according to their handicap and at the conclusion of the four rounds, all flight winners advanced to the 18-hole world championship playoff. The World Am features five competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 years-of-age and under to the super seniors 70

j STEP 1 – ALIGN THE CLUB . . . The bottom line on the club face should be at the same angle as the club shaft as you align your hands. This club alignment is achieved most easily (as well as the proper left hand alignment) if you hold your club beside your left leg. See Photo 1.

A root cause of inadequate “golf swings” can very often be attributed to improper club face aim and body alignment. I can tell you for a fact (from working with more than 60,000 golf students) that more than 90% of golfers align their hands on the club with the club face “closed”- pointing left for righties, and their “body lines” incorrectly aligned. Whew, it’s hard to make your “A swing” with this confusion and conflict created between your eyes and your mind! Your eyes may say yes but your mind usually knows better which results in the compensating “B swing” or usually worse. Your pre-swing “setup” features of aim and alignment have a very strong influence on the effectiveness of your “golf swing”! Use the following steps and photos to achieve proper aim and alignment (for righties):

STEP 2 - ALIGN YOUR HANDS ON THE CLUB . . . Generally, your hands should appear on the club as your hands appear with your arms relaxed and hanging by your sides. Both hands are naturally rotated in an alignment that allows you to see half of the back of each hand. See Photos 2 and 3.

STEP 3 - AIM THE CLUB FACE TO THE TARGET . . . Square the bottom line on the club face to the target line - the visualized line from the club face to the target. In other words, make the bottom line on the club face a right angle or 90 degrees to the target line. You can point a tee to your target to help you achieve the correct club face angle. See Photos 4 and 5.
o STEP 4 - ALIGN YOUR FEET, HIPS AND SHOULDERS TO THE CLUB FACE . . . Square your “toe line”- a visualized line across your feet, to the bottom line on the club face. Then make your hip line and shoulder line parallel to your toe line. See Photo 6.
Because your eye line is also parallel left of your target line, as you turn your head to look at your target (after the proper alignment), you will actually feel that you are aimed about 3 yards left of the target with your shorter irons, 5 yards left with your longer irons, and 10 yards left with your driver. This is a condition called parallax that creates a distortion as you view your target from the side of the target line. You have more than likely been incorrectly aimed and/or aligned if you sense different measurements.

DUNES CLUB RENOVATIONS When the PGA Professional National Championship comes to the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in 2014, the nation’s top players among the club professional ranks will compete on 18 holes of new Champion ultradwarf Bermuda greens. The venerable Dunes Club, one of the last Grand Strand courses to feature bent grass greens, made the change over the summer. “Champion has been very successful,” says Hamilton. “From the standpoint of putting quality, we wouldn’t make a change unless we expected to get conditions that are better or the same that we have right now.” In addition to getting the new Champion grass putting surfaces, the Dunes Club is expanding its driving range, adding new tees and improving drainage capabilities at its 11th and iconic 13th holes. “There’s really been an explosion of ultradwarfs in the Carolinas,” says Hamilton. “As an owner or club member, you don’t have to be concerned with losing your greens with ultradwarfs.”
THE DYE COURSE NAMED 2013 SOUTH CAROLINA GOLF COURSE OF THE YEAR The S.C. Golf Course Owners Associaion Board of Directors selected The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort & Golf as the 2013 South Carolina ‘Golf Course of the Year’. After first being named named the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association Golf Course of the Year, the Dye Course at Barefoot Resort & Golf has won 2013 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year from a vote of the Board of Directors from the S.C. Golf Course Owners Association. The selection was based based on criteria established by the National and State Golf Course Owners Associations. The Dye Course is a Pete Dye layout of 7,343 yards that has regularly been named one of the nation’s “Top 100 Courses” by Golf Magazine, Golf Digest and Golfweek. Most recently, the SC Golf Course Ratings Panel ranked it on there “Best You Can Play on Grand Strand” list in 2013. The Dye Club’s resume includes hosting the Hootie & the Blowfish Monday after the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am – the largest single-day charity golf tournament in South Carolina for the past 11 years. “This was a big year from Myrtle Beach...” said Terry Sedalik, executive director of the S.C. Golf Course Owners Association. “The Dye Club at Barefoot Resort did a great presentation and it impressed everybody on the board with what they’ve accomplished the past couple years. So we were very happy with the picks.” The Dye Club advances to Southeast Regional consideration, with a chance to advance to consideration by the National Golf Course Owners Association as the National Golf Course of the Year.
DUSTIN JOHNSON GOLF SCHOOL AT TPC The highly rated TPC of Myrtle Beach will be the home to the first Dustin Johnson Schools of Golf. Allen Terrell, former golf coach at Coastal Carolina University, has been named the director of instruction. Dustin Johnson was born in Columbia, South Carolina and played collegiate golf at CCU, maintaining many ties to the Grand Strand. Dustin is the first player since Tiger Woods to win at least once in each of his first six seasons on the PGA tour coming out of college. The school will offer a variety of cutting edge programs including ‘Committed Player’ and development programs with monthly or yearly fee for weekly lessons. In keeping with DJ’s reputation as one of the longest hitters on tour, the school will offer golf distance clinics through a combination of swing analysis and workout routines to generate more power. The facility will also provide group instruction and structured corporate outings. Students will be able to take advantage of the unique TracMan ® launch monitor analysis system, the only one available in the area.
