The First Tee- Our Mission: To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill lifeenhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

The First Tee is a 501c3 nonprofit youth development organization. Its purpose is to give young people of all backgrounds an opportunity to develop, through golf and character education, life-enhancing values such as honesty, integrity and sportsmanship.

10 On The Green magazine

One of the most pressing concerns for the entire golf industry is the strategy for growing participation in this great game. While there are over 25 million active golfers in the United States, that number has been falling for more than a decade and without a significant infusion of young golfers, the number will continue to fall. According to the National Golf Foundation, 463 million rounds were played last year- down from 518 million in 2000. And beyond the world of golf, a growing concern in this country is the quality of character development education for young people in all segments of society. Along the Grand Strand, community minded www.onthegreenmagazine.com

Preparing our young people for success throught life residents have been addressing this problem head-on through The First Tee organizations. The mission of the not-for-profit First Tee is to “impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

Honesty Golf is unique from other sports in that players regularly call penalties on themselves and report their own score.

“The First Tee of the Grand Strand uses golf as a vehicle to further character education,” explains Rebecca Albin, executive director of the First Tee of the Grand Strand. This year, over 13,000 youngsters living in Horry and Georgetown counties will be impacted by the various programs that The First Tee offers. One of those kids is Lance Vu, a 12 year old who has participated in The First Tee for the last five years and plays on the golf team at Socastee

High School. Lance was selected to play in the recent First Tee fundraiser tournament at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club in Pawleys Island where he hit shots with Golf Channel personalities Kelly Tilghman and Charlie Rymer. With a calm disposition and a smooth golf swing, Lance dreams of one day being a Masters or US Open champion. Another rising star of the program is 17 year old Ashley Sloup, a senior at South Brunswick High School who will be attending Winthrop University in Rock Hill next year as a member of their golf team. A member of the First Tee since 2003, she has the distinct honor of being selected to participate in the Nature Valley First Tee Open

at Pebble Beach, an official Champions Tour event held September 27-29 and televised internationally on Golf Channel. The 81 young men and women playing at Pebble Beach range in age from 14 to 18 and were selected by a national panel of judges that evaluated participants’ playing ability and comprehension of the life skills and character education learned through their involvement with The First Tee. This year, just four students from North Carolina and one from South Carolina will make the trip out to the west coast. Elementary school students learn about golf “An invitation to this and also important life skills through The First event is a goal many Tee National Schools Program teenage participants at our chapters set, and it is exciting to see their hard event at Caledonia Golf Club, Ashley work and perseverance rewarded,” appeared poised and comfortable Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., chief executive on camera with Kelly Tilghman. officer of The First Tee, said. Confidence Confidence plays a key role in the level of play that one achieves. Players can increase confidence in their abilities by being positive and focusing on something they are doing well regardless of the outcome.

Set on the 28 acre learning campus of The First Tee of Brunswick County, the academy has the capacity to host 50 youth participants and 16 counselors/ coaches. Each summer, about 400 participants will attend the Academy’s in-residence experience designed to immerse them in the values education, leadership, life skills and healthy habits. Community support and participation is critical to the ongoing success of the organization. All funds raised in the Grand Strand stay in the community to directly fund local programs and activities. The First Tee is always accepting donations of golf clubs, golf balls and apparel. Albin emphasized

that almost 100% of the training is done by local volunteers, giving generously of their time to the children. The First Tee is much more than a traditional junior golf program as it offers a range of educational and character building opportunities such as The First Tee National School Program for local physical education teachers of grades K through 5th which introduces golf, The First Tee Nine Core Values™ and The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits to elementary

students during physical education classes. This education helps give students a lifelong recreation and physical fitness activity. It also assists in developing appreciation for the positive personal and social values associated with the game of golf.

Perseverance To succeed in golf, players must continue through bad breaks and their own mistakes, while learning from past experiences.

Teachers and principals report a positive impact on their students as a result of their First Tee experience. Examples include improved classroom behavior, showing greater respect for teachers and peers and fewer disciplinary issues. A recent independent research study of First Tee participants documents that a remarkable 73% reported high confidence in their ability to do well academically. Currently, all ten of the elementary schools in Georgetown county and 14 elementary schools in Horry county participate in this superb program. Nearly 100 golf courses in coastal North and South Carolina support the work of the First Tee through the Carol S. Petrea Youth Golf Foundation.

Judgement Using good judgment is very important in golf. It comes into play when deciding on strategy, club selection, when to play safe and when to take a chance, the type of shot players consider executing, as well as making healthy choices on and off the golf course.

Program Levels and Enrichment Focus •PLAYer (required minimum age 7) - Introduces playing the game of golf with special emphasis on learning golf and The First Tee Code of Conduct, appreciating the rules and etiquette of the game and developing a game plan for golf and life. • Par (recommended minimum age 9) - Focuses on interpersonal communications and selfmanagement skills.

The First Tee of Brunswick County ‘Eagle’ and ‘Ace’ participants at the 2012 Carolina Cup in Raleigh, North Carolina

• Birdie (recommended minimum age 11) - Emphasizes goal setting. • Eagle (recommended minimum age13) - Emphasizes resilience skills, conflict resolution and planning for the future. • Ace (required minimum age 14 or entering 9th grade) - Once a young person has progressed through all program levels, he/she can become Ace-certified, focusing on setting goals for golf, career education, and giving back to the community.

Courtesy A round of golf should begin and end with a handshake between fellow competitors. Players also should be still and quiet while others are preparing and performing a shot.

The First Putt program gives local children access to minigolf and teaches them the basics of putting and golf etiquette. U.S. Prominigolf Association founder and owner of Hawaiian Rumble mini golf in North Myrtle Beach Bob Detwiler explains, “we can teach them golf skills and the skills of life.”

The Best Of

Rivers Edge Golf Course #9

Myrtle Beach

Established in the fall of 2012, The Best of Myrtle Beach Golf Group consists of 15 award-winning golf courses along the Grand Strand from Shallotte, North Carolina to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. This remarkable group of courses includes five “Golf Digest Top 100 Public Courses in America.” With an abundance of marsh front and Intracoastal Waterway holes, you will experience the unique coastal vistas and charm that the region is renowned for. For dramatic beauty and world class playability, there is no finer selection of golf courses than those listed below. ARROWHEAD GOLF COURSE

Arrowhead

South Carolina’s “1998 Golf Course of the Year.” Designers Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson have sculpted Arrowhead’s 27-hole complex into three aesthetic masterpieces. The Lakes, features dramatically sloping fairways and strategically placed water hazards; The Cypress, gently traces the outskirts of a pristine Carolina hardwood wetland; and The Waterway wide fairways with dramatic holes along the high bluffs of the Intracoastal Waterway. Arrowhead is located in Myrtle Beach just five minutes from the Myrtle Beach International Airport. BAREFOOT RESORT

Barefoot - Dye Course

At Barefoot Resort, Pete Dye set out to create something that would linger in the golfer’s mind forever. Bordering the natural white sands of the Carolina Bays, this visually stunning design is filled with the infamous pitfalls for wayward shots that have become synonymous with the Dye name. The Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort is routed through a spectacular piece of property in the heart of Barefoot Resort. Like many European courses, the course does not return to the clubhouse after nine holes. It is not a British links course, but rather a classic Lowcountry course, filled with live oaks, pines, sand, natural areas and native grasses.

Barefoot - Love Course

A Carolina native, Davis Love III embraces a tradition of Lowcountry character in his latest design. The Love Course incorporates the recreated ruins of an old plantation home along holes 3-7. Wide open fairways and generous landing areas set the stage for an unforgettable round of golf. Greg Norman’s newest design at Barefoot Resort is unique in many ways. With only 60 acres of mowable grass existing on all 18 holes, Greg uses stunning waste areas and the site’s natural vegetation to frame each hole. The course resembles one found in the deserts of the southwest, without the desert.

Here each hole seems to have been crafted by nature rather than by man. And the three finishing holes are among the world’s best. Discover for yourself why Golf Digest chose Heather Glen as 1987’s #1 new public course, and names it again and again as among the country’s best. The course’s 27 holes are even lovelier in maturity, its setting is truly spectacular, and the 19th Century clubhouse echoes its Scottish tradition. Architect Clyde Johnston brings back the traditional look at Shaftsbury Glen. You will think of Winged Foot as you play the newest of Myrtle Beach’s championship courses. This beautiful course should be on your must-play list...just 10 minutes from Restaurant Row via the new Highway 22. Possum Trot is a long respected venue rated “Friendliest course on the strand” where the guest is #1. Spacious fairways and awesome Par 5’s make for a golfing experience as good as it gets. Warm up on the area’s most complete golf training center. WICKED STICK Wicked Stick Golf Links is the only John Daly Signature Course in the USA. Teamed with Golf Course Architect Clyde Johnston, John Daly helped to design this Links Style Course in Myrtle Beach. Wicked Stick features deep pot bunkers, dune-like mounds, native grasses and “Daly” tees that challenge even the longest hitters. In true John Daly style, Wicked Stick does not have any fairway bunkers, so you can “Grip It and Rip It” off the tee. WORLD TOUR GOLF LINKS Now you can play 18 of the world’s most legendary golf holes on America’s most visionary course – World Tour Golf Links. It’s a trip around the world played on a course you’ll never forget! The Open Nine

includes holes inspired by St. Andrews and Pinehurst No. 2. The Championship Nine includes holes inspired by the four major championships — The Masters, United States Open, British Open and PGA Championship. PRESTWICK COUNTRY CLUB Dense forests of pine are paired with sandy waste areas for a contrast of perfection at Prestwick Country Club. Creating elevations with dune-like berms, stairway bunkers and deep bulkhead protected greens meant moving over 1.3 million cubic yards of earth, but the end product was well-worth it in the end. Streams wander between the holes surrounded by framing lakes and generous landing areas in this Dye masterpiece.

RIVERS EDGE Six of the holes at Rivers Edge Golf Club sit high upon bluffs that overlook two miles of grassy marshlands bisected by the bends and turns of the Shallotte River. The interior holes at Rivers Edge are equally stunning with gentle elevation changes, freshwater lakes and bent grass greens.

TIDEWATER GOLF CLUB Nestled like a sleeping giant between the Intracoastal Waterway and Cherry Grove, the legendary Tidewater Golf Club offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. Seamlessly marrying the game to its surroundings, architect Ken Tomlinson evokes the style and majesty of some of the game’s greatest venues and delivers an experience that puts this course on the must-play list of many Grand Strand golfers.

GOLFALYZER Founded in 2013, the Golfalyzer™ is the result of a memorable round of golf being played by its founders, Brent Pauley and Chuck Stump. Lots of golfers understand the positive effect that a few drinks may have on their ability to relax the body. Brent and Chuck wondered if anyone ever took the time to monitor how much they consumed on the course and at what level it impacted their game. Even more importantly, did golfers realize what their blood-alcohol content (BAC) was by the end of the round? Was it really safe for them to get behind the wheel and drive themselves (and possibly the rest of their foursome) home? Thus, the Golfalyzer™ was born. The Golfalyzer™ is a personal, reusable breathalyzer that golfers can use to monitor their BAC. The Golfalyzer™ is reusable for 8001,000 uses and operates on 2-AAA alkaline batteries. The Golfalyzer™ won the “2013 Conference Best Product” honors at the International Network of Golf (ING) Conference. “We had some really strong competition and taking top honors just blew our minds”commented Chuck Stump, partner. “Winning this honor really validates our mission”added Brent Pauley, partner. “The Golfalyzer™ was a fresh new addition to our group and I think it has great potential in the golf industry”stated Michael Jamison, ING Executive Director. On The Green Magazine sent out a survey to our list of email subscribers to find out which golf holes were their favorites in the Myrtle Beach area. The criteria for judging was to choose the holes that gave the most golfing enjoyment. Each respondent could name up to three golf holes. Not necessarily the highest “rated” or most scenic, just the ones that they really enjoyed playing - the holes that they talked about later with their golfing buddies. The usual suspects received votes - The Dunes Club, Caledonia, Glen Dornoch, Kings North and more. The votes didn’t stick to a few well-known golf holes. Surprisingly there were 190 different holes listed as favorites. Several courses had multiple holes listed as favorites. These courses may not have “won” the contest but if 4 or 5 holes out of 18 are chosen as people’s favorites that is a course worth playing.

Reader’s Choice Top Three Golf Holes Glen Dornoch #16 A par 4 that heads directly toward the Intracoastal Waterway. Ideally your first shot rolls to a stop near the top of the hill without rolling over into the marshy waste area. Your next shot will have a hard time hitting the green and sticking without going too far over or to the right into the marsh. Try to ignore the passing yachts and fishing boats as you putt out. This is a hole that requires planning and positioning as well as accurate shots.

Caledonia #18 Perhaps the most striking aesthetic feature of the plantation is the impressive avenue of 150-year-old live oaks leading to the clubhouse steps. The picturesque par 4 18th hole borders the Plantation’s old rice field and requires a precise tee shot that sets up a difficult second shot: a forced carry onto a green at the foot of the clubhouse where onlookers may be sitting in rocking chairs betting on shots’ results.

Rivers Edge #9 The very first day that Arnold Palmer gazed out across the Shallotte River he remarked that this site had the potential to be something very special. Six of the holes at Rivers Edge Golf Club sit high upon bluffs that overlook two miles of grassy marshlands bisected by the bends and turns of the Shallotte River. Hole #9 is a par 5 that seems to get narrower and narrower as you progress down the fairway leaving the golfer with a wedge shot to a very narrow deep green

Caledonia #18 - “Not a long hole, but a great test of both skills and nerve on a beautiful course. Get it down the neck of the fairway and as close to the hazard on the right as you dare to make the approach a bit easier. Watch out if the wind is blowing, because it’s normally into your face on the approach shot. Even more exciting when your buddies are sitting on the porch of the clubhouse watching the approach shot carry over the water and marsh to the green.”

It’s nice to have one of your 18 or 27 golf holes chosen as a favorite by somebody. It’s even better when several of your holes are chosen as favorites. Other notable celebrity attendees included boxer Gerry Cooney, hall of fame billiards star Ewa Laurance and former NFL players Richard Dent, Thurman Thomas and Sterling Sharpe. “Men spend four hours or more playing a round of golf,” said Tom Quinn, ZERO Board Member and Founder of the Know Your Score Tournament. “As a prostate cancer patient with advanced disease, my hope is that men will take some time on the golf course to discuss their heath and learn about their risk for prostate cancer.” All proceeds from Know Your Score Golf Tournament and Gala go directly to the fight to end prostate cancer by promoting early detection, education and research that will lead to the cure. For a third year in a row, Atlantic Urology Clinics and Carolina Regional Cancer Center served as title sponsors for the event. The End of Prostate Cancer is a national nonprofit organization with the mission to end prostate cancer. As a leader in the fight against prostate cancer, ZERO advances research, encourages action, and provides education and support to men and their families. ZERO is a 501c3 charity, a Better Business Bureau member and 89 cents of every dollar donated goes to research and programs. For more information, visit www.zerocancer.org.

The Father and Son Team Classic

Fathers and sons; grandfathers and grandsons; stepfathers and stepsons; fathers and sons in law; and uncles and nephews. The motto at the Father & Son event is; any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad. The most humbling and human of all sporting pursuits, golf teaches us patience, honesty, integrity, and persistence. Throughout the course of every round, we recognize the fleeting nature of success and the constant hard work required to sustain it. We learn to brush off disappointment, while vowing to do better the next time. We learn that we’re vulnerable to mistakes. We learn to project humility when victorious and to be gracious in defeat; each one a worthwhile trait our dads try to instill in us as we come of age.

This year’s 2013 Father & Son Team Classic had a “down to the wire” finish filled with clutch shots and holed putts. Bryan and Bryce Kendrick of Knoxville, Tenn. nipped two - time winners Gary Carpenter Sr. and Jr. by a stroke to the take the overall Gross Championship. The Kendricks shot 65 in Thursdays Texas Scramble format, 66 in Fridays Best Ball Format, and 64 in Saturdays Captain’s Choice Format. For the first time in the tournament’s history – a National Senior Division was established. This years National Senior Champion went to the team of Donnie and Kris Blanks. The Blanks’ are no strangers to this annual event. The Blanks’ won the first two Father & Son Team Classic events, 16 years ago. This was their first trip back to the tournament since 1999. Due to Kris’ PGA TOUR medical exemption for 2013, his usually busy schedule allowed he and his father to come back and compete.

Each year in July, fathers and sons from around the world gather in Myrtle Beach to take part in a threeday tournament that has become the largest father-son golf event in the world. Last year’s 54-hole competition drew over 900 players from 46 states and 7 foreign countries - 24 flights in all. Eligibility for the tournament is open to fathers and sons; grandfathers and grandsons; stepfathers and stepsons; fathers and sons in law; and uncles and nephews. However, the motto at the Father & Son event is; any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad. The tournament allows any combination of players on a team as long as there is a generation gap between them, they do not need to be related.

This year’s tournament benefited the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization that gives back to the families of our brave military. Over twelve thousand dollars was raised in this event alone. The 2014 National Father & Son Team Classic will take place July 24-26th. Visit FatherSonGolf.com or call (866) 4972627 for more information.

2013 Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fall Inductees Enshrined

Ed Jerdon (holding plaque)

Lawton Benton, accepting on behalf of his grandfather Casper Benton

Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday announces Casper Benton and Ed Jerdon have been named as the 2013 inductees to the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame and were honored at Pine Lakes Country Club, Aug. 25. A true pioneer, Casper Benton left Myrtle Beach in the 1920s for New York to learn the business of golf course construction. He returned in 1927 to build Ocean Forest Country Club, the first course in what would become the “Golf Capital of the U.S.”. Benton lived on-site while it was under construction and became its first greenskeeper, nurturing a layout that helped lead Myrtle Beach to national acclaim.

Recognizing the untapped potential of the South Strand, Jerdon and his investors built Sea Gull Golf Club in 1965, paving the way for many exceptional courses to follow on Pawleys Island. They built and owned Quail Creek and the East and West courses at Burning Ridge – layouts that helped make Highway 501 a golf hotbed. Jerdon was also the impetus behind Indian Wells Golf Club and International Club. Jerdon served as president of the Dunes Club and Surf Club, two of the Grand Strand’s most prestigious clubs. In addition to his golf work, he also spearheaded the construction of numerous churches, schools and hotels.

Benton then built the Dunes Club, the area’s most iconic course. His namesake company, C.L. Benton & Sons, also constructed Tidewater Golf Club, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Plantation. All of these courses have been ranked among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” by Golf Digest. The Benton family continues to be an integral part of the Myrtle Beach golf community.

“Both Casper and Ed are true visionaries who both saw the potential of the Grand Strand as a world-class golf destination long before anyone else,” said Bill Golden, president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. “We are truly indebted to their pioneering spirit and sense of community and their place in Hall of Fame is richly deserved.”

In the mid-1960s Myrtle Beach was home to just 10 golf courses, but visionary builder Edward Jerdon saw a prosperous future for the sleepy beach community. Jerdon – one of the most accomplished builders in the South – built and co-owned six Grand Strand layouts, helping jump-start the area’s emergence as golf’s most popular destination.

Established to pay tribute to the men and women who have played significant roles in the development of the Myrtle Beach area golf industry, the Hall of Fame was founded in 2009. Its opening coincided with the reopening of Pine Lakes – formerly the Grand Strand’s first course, Ocean Forest Country Club.

Heritage Course Hole # 18

Myrtle Beach is known as the Golf Capital of the World. Part of the reason for that is the fact that there are over a hundred golf courses located in a 60-mile stretch of coastline known as the Grand Strand. You can play a different course every day for three months and still have new courses to look forward to. Another reason for that label is that here you can find some of the highest quality golf courses in the country. Golf

28 On The Green magazine

Digest recently named several of the beach’s courses to the “Top 100 Public Courses in America” list for the 2012– 2013 season. Thirty-six of the area’s courses hold a rank of four and a half stars or higher. Throw in nationally-known golf schools, top-quality practice facilities, restaurants and nightlife and it’s obvious why we’re the Golf Capital of the World!

SOUTH STRAND The Founders Club was voted 2011 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association. Designed by Thomas Walker, former lead designer for Gary Player Design, the course was new in 2008. Built on the site of the former Sea Gull Golf Club in Pawleys Island, this totally new course features impressive elevation changes, fairways defined by mounds with pot bunkers, and square “island” tee boxes set inside massive waste bunkers. Its elevated greens are the only ones on the Grand Strand grassed with the new heat-tolerant Emerald Bermuda that enables the greenskeeper to keep the undulating putting surfaces tight, fast and smooth in any weather. The clubhouse overlooks the 10th and 18th holes. There, you’ll find a well-stocked 1,600 square foot pro shop and locker rooms with showers, TVs and card tables. Built on two of South Carolina’s historic plantations along the scenic Waccamaw River, the Heritage Club is a favorite of Grand Strand golfers. Over 600 acres of giant magnolias, freshwater lakes and marshes have been transformed into a golf course that rivals any course in the Southeast. Recently honored by Golf Digest as 46th among the “Top 100 Public Golf Courses in America” for 2007-2008 and recently rated HHHH 1/2 stars in “Places to Play,” the Heritage Club is a mixture of pure Southern charm and hospitality. The Heritage Club has announced that all of its greens were renovated and Champions Bermuda is the new putting surface. The clubhouse has been renovated and upgraded to enhance guests’ experience. True Blue Plantation and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club are the only companion courses by the same designer on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses 20032006.” Architect Mike Strantz built Caledonia in 1994 and the acclaim was immediate, including a number 30 ranking on Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play.” Often compared to Augusta National for its exquisite style and floral beauty, Caledonia’s Champions Ultra Dwarf Bermuda greens are true championship quality. Just across Kings River Road, Strantz followed up four years later with True Blue and earned a “Top 10 Best New Public Course” honor from Golf Digest. Set on a Colonial indigo plantation of the same descriptive name, True Blue features surprising elevation changes, huge fairways and excellent Tif Eagle Bermuda greens. With subtle greens enveloped by sand bunkers, challenging fairways dotted with water and unique obstacles evident on every hole, this is a player’s course that demands strategy, ingenuity and concentration. Pawleys Plantation was ranked by Golf Digest among South Carolina’s ‘Top 25 Layouts’ in 2001. Golf Digest has further awarded Pawleys Plantation HHHH 1/2 stars in its ‘Best Places to Play’. Other accolades include Golf For Women’s ‘Top 10 Women Friendly Courses in America’ 1999 and Travel & Leisure Golf’s ‘4-Star Golf’ in 2001. The Tradition Golf Club is a championship course that boasts the proud traditions of the great courses that have stood the test of time. Amenities abound at the Tradition, from comfortable dining, to the elaborate practice facility. The Tradition was awarded HHHH 1/2 Stars - Golf Digest Places to Play 2008. Three of the South Strand’s premier layouts are Prime Times Signature Courses that are also part of the oceanfront Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Architect Tom Jackson built River Club Golf Course around a network of spring-fed ponds and added more than 100 bunkers, but the immaculate Champion Bermuda greens are River Club’s most outstanding feature. The semiprivate Litchfield Country Club offers limited public play on its Willard Byrd designed course with plenty of doglegs and fine TifDwarf Bermuda greens. Set among the former ricefields of two historic plantations, Willbrook Plantation Golf Club is a Dan Maples creation with Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda greens that was named on Golf For Women’s “Top 50” list in 2010.

the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association, Blackmoor offers groomed TifEagle Bermuda greens in a scenic former-plantation setting. Add this enjoyable Player challenge to complete your Myrtle Beach golf package. In Wachesaw Plantation East, architect Clyde Johnston has created an alluring taste of Scottish design. Located in the scenic fishing village of Murrells Inlet, just 20 minutes south of the Myrtle Beach International Airport, Wachesaw Plantation East Golf Club is a championship 18-hole facility built on the site of a former rice plantation. This exhilarating design has been the site of four nationally-televised, professional golf tournaments on the LPGA Tour: the 1997 Susan G. Koman International, the 1998 & 1999 City of Hope Myrtle Beach Classic, and the 2000 Kathy Ireland/ Greens.com Classic. Wachesaw Plantation East has also been named the 2007 Myrtle Beach “Golf Course of the Year” by Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association. Voted the 2004-2005 Golf Course of the year, golfers playing Indian Wells Golf Club continue to rave about the appearance and layout which reminds many of a traditional US Open style course. Indian Wells is a course that places a premium on creative shot making and rewards the daring. After your round, enjoy the relaxing clubhouse and outdoor patio overlooking the 10th tee while being served by the past winners of the coveted “Myrtle Beach Golf News’ Hospitality and Operational Excellence Award.” Indigo Creek Golf Club is set in the very heart of the Grand Strand’s “Low Country” plantation area in Murrells Inlet, just 10 minutes south of Myrtle Beach. Golfers experience a new level of pleasure as they wind through the flowing creeks and giant oaks found along the back nine. This beautiful Willard Byrd design displays well maintained TifDwarf Bermuda greens and Bermuda tees, fairways and roughs. Surrounded by an abundance of water and wildlife, your experience at Indigo Creek will be one to treasure for a lifetime. Wicked Stick Golf Links is the Myrtle Beach area’s only John Daly Signature Course. With very few trees in a Scottish-style landscape, Daly’s inspiration is evident on the doublewide fairways separated by huge mounds and the short par fours that invite visiting players to “grip it and rip it.” With big TifDwarf Bermuda greens, a practice facility and a convenient location near the airport, Wicked Stick is a fun addition to any Grand Strand golf package. Prestwick Country Club features a co-design by father-son architects Pete and P.B. Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship and a US Open qualifier, Prestwick is a sculpted layout with deep bunkers, giant berms and those famous Dye bulkheads framing many of the TifDwarf greens. Whispering Pines Golf Course is located on the south side of Myrtle Beach near dozens of oceanfront resort hotels, but its quiet setting has no adjacent housing. Whispering Pines is the closest area course to the Myrtle Beach Jetport. The park-like layout has recently been enhanced with the installation of new TifEagle greens. The onsite golf school is yet another convenient reason to include Whispering Pines on any Grand Strand vacation package.

North Strand Burning Ridge Golf Club located on highway 501, is the proud recipient of the 2006 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year award and the 2006 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year award. Encounter elegantly shaped mounded fairways and large yawning bunkers before reaching smooth putting surfaces. After your round enjoy the country club atmosphere with a drink and meal on the outside deck. General James Hackler Golf Course at Coastal Carolina University (formerly known as Quail Creek) is one of the most requested courses on the beach. Built in 1968, the course received a renovation by local architect Craig Schreiner that saw the course reopen in 2011 with a fresh new look. Wide fairways, meticulously manicured greens, and accommodating staff have made this course a true favorite. It’s challenging for the experienced golfer and also perfect for the beginner. Legends Resort is one of the Grand Strands finest stay and play facilities. Legends guests enjoy two and three bedroom golf villas, a lighted 30-acre practice facility and an onsite Scottish tavern, the Ailsa Pub. The resort is home to three award- winning courses. The Heathland is a Tom Doak gem where the natural contours of the land dictate the flow of the course. This links course’s windswept hills and deep-faced bunkers are just a few of the challenges that await each player. The greens were recently renovated and Champion Bermuda is the new putting surface. This course is a true test of Old World golf. The Moorland is a P.B. Dye design and was recently name by Golf Digest as one of the “Fifty Toughest Courses in America” at #37. It remains one of the most unique courses on the East Coast. Dye’s panache for multilevel

fairways and greens and signature bulkheads has transformed this land into one of Myrtle Beach’s most requested courses. The Legends Parkland stands on its own merits. The Parkland is modeled after the style of architects Alister MacKenzie (Augusta National) and George Thomas (Riviera Country Club) and was designed to compliment nature so closely as to make the layout indistinguishable from nature itself. Enjoy tree-lined fairways, vast natural areas, substantial undulating greens and experience a day of exceptional golf. perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. Seamlessly marrying the game to its surroundings, architect Ken Tomlinson evokes the style and majesty of some of the game’s greatest venues and delivers an experience that puts this course on the must-play list of many Grand Strand golfers. Two additional Prime Times Signature Courses are located in the North Strand area. Long Bay Club is a unique Jack Nicklaus Signature Course with Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda greens, deep pot bunkers, vast waste areas and mounding along the fairways. Close by, Aberdeen Country Club is a 27-hole course designed by Tom Jackson that features Tif-Eagle Bermuda greens on three, 9-hole layouts with a Scottish theme in different natural settings. Black Bear Golf Club is a true classic parkland course completely engulfed by nature and enhanced by 23 beautiful finger lakes. This Tom Jackson Signature design provides golfers the opportunity to get away from the confinement of homes lining each hole. The course itself forces golfers to use every club in their bags and the wide fairways instill confidence for the meek and forgiveness for the bold. Now under new ownership and management, Colonial Charters Golf & Country Club re-opened in August 2013. After an extensive renovation project to the 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, this facility has been restored to the quality conditions for which it was acclaimed during the ‘90s. Colonial Charters features a number of memorable holes defined by mature hardwoods and strategically placed water hazards. The 6,427 yard layout features two iconic green-side waterfalls and the tree-lined fairways reward golfers that are accurate off the tee. Experience world-class golf in a wilderness setting at Eagle Nest Golf Club. Located in the fishing village of Little River, this 250-acre property acts as much as a wildlife preserve as a golf course. The 18-hole layout was designed by renowned architect Gene Hamm, a Carolina native who has a reputation for carving classics out of diverse terrain. Opened in 1971, Eagle Nest has undergone several facelifts over the years, including a complete makeover of the layout and clubhouse in 2001. Located in Little River, SC, River Hills Golf & Country Club is a Tom Jackson parkland-style design blending modern and traditional elements. The fairways of this 18-hole course make their way through a picturesque, heavily-wooded terrain but in rolling hills, unusual for a coastal course, are River Hills’ signature feature. The course was nominated as “Best New Course” in 1989 by Golf Digest and recently underwent a $2 million renovation. The crown jewels of the Glens Golf Group collection are located on opposite sides of Highway 17 near Little River. Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links is designer Clyde Johnston’s brilliant tribute to legendary architect Donald Ross. Named a “Top 10” Myrtle Beach area course by Golf Digest among its many accolades, Glen Dornoch features big Bermuda greens with bump-and-run fringes and spectacular finishing holes on both nines that overlook the Intracoastal Waterway. Heather Glen Golf Links offers 27 holes designed by Johnston and Willard Byrd. Acclaimed as “America’s Best New Public Course” in 1987 by Golf Digest, the three Scottish-inspired nines are set in a virtual nature preserve of old growth oaks and waterfowl habitat. Located on-site is Village at the Glens, a perfect accommodations choice for North Strand golfers who want spacious lodgings with all of the amenities. A complete Glens Golf package features significant discounts for both golf and accommodations. 48 On The Green magazine

The wide, links-style fairways at Farmstead Golf Links gently follow the lay of the land to create a collection of shot-making opportunities that reward superior play from golfers of many styles. At this captivating course, the winds are always in play, giving it yet another dimension. Whether the flags are noisily flapping or eerily still, hitting it straight is the key to scoring well at Farmstead. It may be wide open with generous landing areas, but scoot one off a fairway and you are stuck in the love grass, where your next move is to drop a provisional. And as your round comes to a close, the only hole in 2 states, the legendary 767-yard, par 6 finishing hole unfolds over a half-mile of beautifully manicured turf to offer a final test of your skills. Respected architect Willard Byrd put his personal stamp on Meadowlands Golf Club with distinctive parkland features that follow the lay of the land through mature woods bordered by serene meadows, pristine lakes and vast wetlands. Spacious, gently sloping fairways offer a surprising variety of elevation changes that present a multitude of challenges as they open onto large, immaculately manicured greens. Five sets of tees, an open layout, well defined hazards and exemplary attention to detail create a rewarding round for everyone who comes ready to play. For over twenty years Oyster Bay has been a favorite of Myrtle Beach golfers. Oyster Bay is a rare, harmonious blend of the penal, heroic and strategic philosophies of golf course architecture. A course where variety and innovation are the name of the game. Golf Digest has repeatedly rated Oyster Bay HHHH 1/2 stars and ranked it the “Best New Resort Course of the Year.” The clubhouse has been renovated and upgraded to enhance guests’ experience. The Pearl, known as “the Gem of the Carolinas” is noted for its fast rolling greens and finely manicured fairways which cut through the forest and coastal marshlands along the Calabash River. This 36 hole property is enhanced with an array of gardens and water features that add difficulty and splendor to each hole. Completely renovated in 1999, the East Course is a traditional parkland layout and the West Course is a links style track with a dramatic finish along the bluffs overlooking the Calabash River. Just a 20-minute drive from Myrtle Beach, Sandpiper Bay is in the heart of the relaxed community of Sunset Beach. The 27-hole facility offers well-maintained fairways and greens that entice players of every level at a great value. Sandpiper Bay is committed to maintaining the course at impeccable standards and just finished a major renovation and converted all 27 greens to MiniVerde bermuda. Sea Trail Golf Resort is the site of three spectacular courses. The Willard Byrd Course features 18 holes of championship golf that is memorable for both its beauty and playability. Large Champion bermuda greens, pristine lakes and well- placed bunkers make this Willard Byrd course a challenge rated four stars by Golf Digest. It was also named in the “Top 50 Courses to Play in Myrtle Beach” by Golf Digest. The Rees Jones Course has recently been renovated by renowned architect Rees Jones. Magnificent undulating bent grass greens and winding fairways are bordered by old oaks and towering pines trees which add to this distinctive layout. Rees Jones has renovated four US Open courses. The Rees Jones course is the “2005 Best Resort Course” by Golf Week Magazine. It was also named in the “Top 50 Courses to Play in Myrtle Beach” by Golf Digest. The Dan Maples Course is a traditional Southern course that plays along the Calabash Creek. Renovated bent grass greens, framed by magnificent live oaks and large pines, enhance every player’s golf experience. N.C. Magazine rates the Dan Maples Course in the Top 5 50 On The Green magazine

of the coastal region as “Best Conditioned Course.” It was also named in the “Top 50 Courses to Play in Myrtle Beach” by Golf Digest. All 3 Sea Trail courses were voted the “Best of Brunswick County Golf Courses 2009.” Ocean Ridge Plantation is home to the award-winning Big Cats Courses of Grand Strand golf. Lion’s Paw Golf Links was designed by Willard Byrd with MiniVerde™ ultra-dwarf greens in a links setting where big hardwoods frame the rolling fairways. Lion’s Paw has been awarded four stars by Golf Digest. Panther’s Run Golf Links, a Tim Cate design with brand new MiniVerde greens offers a surprisingly hilly terrain that’s bordered by a pristine nature preserve. Business NC Magazine ranked Panther’s Run Golf Links 4th among all coastal region courses in their “Best Bang for the Buck” category. Tiger’s Eye Golf Links is one of Tim Cate’s greatest creations and is a regular on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses”. The G2 bentgrass greens, native grasses and wildflowers along with unique elevation changes and coquina boulder bulkheads make Tiger’s Eye a very special golf experience. Tiger’s Eye was once again ranked in the Top 10 among GOLF Magazine’s Top Public courses State by State for 2013 and the par 3 11th hole at Tiger’s Eye Golf Links was listed on the NC Golf Panel’s “Dream 18”, a fantasy layout featuring the best golf holes in the state. Leopard’s Chase Golf Club opened to rave reviews in the spring of 2007. The 7100+ yard layout features TifSport Bermuda fairways and perfectly manicured L-93 bentgrass greens. The level of detail for this spectacular layout with its natural elevations, scenic landscapes, native grasses and that beautiful white coastal sand used for the waste areas, creates a series of flowing, picturesque holes unlike anything in the area. GolfWeek Magazine ranked Leopard’s Chase number 5 in NC on their list of “The Best Courses You Can Play- State by State” for 2013. Download our mobile “app” on page 96

price point that you’re most comfortable with. That’s what makes Myrtle Beach golf so unique and so enduringly popular. There are many other areas that offer golf in the United States and abroad. Areas like Pinehurst, Hilton Head, Virginia, Florida, Las Vegas, Ireland and Scotland to name just a few. None of these areas can boast the quantity, quality and price point available along the 60 miles grand Strand that stretches from Calabash, North Carolina to Pawley’s Island, South Carolina. And, of course there is the fabulous weather. The average temperature during the peak months of the spring and fall golf season (March and November) is a balmy 68 degrees. For decades, golfers have escaped the brutal Northeast winters to enjoy green grass and sunshine along the Atlantic coast. Now that you have thought about your golf opportunities, where should you stay? As with the golf choices, you have plenty to pick from- more than 450 hotels and motels and nearly 98,000 individual accommodations (including hotels, condominiums, time-shares and rental homes). There are spectacular choices in settings such as oceanfront, ocean view, lakefront, golf view and rates that run the gamut from economy to luxury. You may be like many of the golfers and stay in the heart of Myrtle Beach near the array of entertainment and dining offerings that the area is famous for. If you do, the golf courses you want to play will usually be within a 15 to 30 minute drive away. Carolina National Golf Club is a 27- hole Fred Couples signature golf facility set along the Lockwood Folly River. Winding through rich low country terrain, the course offers an endless variety of playing experiences. It has been awarded HHHH 1/2 stars by Golf Digest, which calls it one of the finest courses on the eastern seaboard. The course was designed to accommodate all skill levels through its innovative design and multiple tee placements. Bald Head Island Club is a unique golf destination located on one of North Carolina’s most beautiful barrier islands accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat. The Bald Head Island golf course is a stunning design by acclaimed architect George Cobb that was recently completely renovated by noted architect Tim Cate. The course wraps around freshwater lagoons, through a maritime forest and across dunes in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean. Resort accommodations, fine dining, an array of recreational opportunities and pristine island beaches make Bald Head Island a vacation experience in a class by itself. The Bald Head Island Club golf course was ranked 12th among the “Top 50 Myrtle Beach Golf Courses” by Golf Digest and “Top Three Golf Communities in North Carolina” by Travel+Leisure Magazine. Cape Fear National is a premium daily fee golf course designed by Tim Cate. Located in the Brunswick Forest community just 5.7 miles south of downtown Wilmington, the course was recently named Top 10 Best Courses You Can Play in NC -2012 by Golfweek. The layout is visually stunning and intertwined with preserved wetlands and scenic lakes. Over 1.5 million cubic yards of earth was moved to create the dramatic berms, meandering fairways, and sculpted features throughout the course. The landscape includes 1,500 feet of bridges, three waterfalls, beach bunkers that run into ponds, and retaining walls made from huge boulders. Cape Fear National is the perfect stop on your way in to or out of Myrtle Beach.

This is a solid top of backswing position. The lower body is stable with very little leg movement and a solid shoulder turn. Notice the back is facing the target and the club is short of parallel. This proves that length of swing is not the reason for distance.

Aim and Align for a Grade A Golf Swing Mike Passmore 2006 Top 6 PGA Teacher in the U.S. 3-Time PGA Section Teacher of the Year Mike Passmore’s Simply Great Golf Academy The Glens Golf Group Possum Trot Golf Club 1170 Possum Trot Rd. N. Myrtle Beach, SC 29582 800-522-8690 simplygreatgolf.com simplygreatgolf@gmail.com

j STEP 1 – ALIGN THE CLUB . . . The bottom line on the club face should be at the same angle as the club shaft as you align your hands. This club alignment is achieved most easily (as well as the proper left hand alignment) if you hold your club beside your left leg. See Photo 1.

66 On The Green magazine

A root cause of inadequate “golf swings” can very often be attributed to improper club face aim and body alignment. I can tell you for a fact (from working with more than 60,000 golf students) that more than 90% of golfers align their hands on the club with the club face “closed”- pointing left for righties, and their “body lines” incorrectly aligned. Whew, it’s hard to make your “A swing” with this confusion and conflict created between your eyes and your mind! Your eyes may say yes but your mind usually knows better which results in the compensating “B swing” or usually worse. Your pre-swing “setup” features of aim and alignment have a very strong influence on the effectiveness of your “golf swing”! Use the following steps and photos to achieve proper aim and alignment (for righties):

k

l

STEP 2 - ALIGN YOUR HANDS ON THE CLUB . . . Generally, your hands should appear on the club as your hands appear with your arms relaxed and hanging by your sides. Both hands are naturally rotated in an alignment that allows you to see half of the back of each hand. See Photos 2 and 3.

www.onthegreenmagazine.com

m

n

STEP 3 - AIM THE CLUB FACE TO THE TARGET . . . Square the bottom line on the club face to the target line - the visualized line from the club face to the target. In other words, make the bottom line on the club face a right angle or 90 degrees to the target line. You can point a tee to your target to help you achieve the correct club face angle. See Photos 4 and 5.

o STEP 4 - ALIGN YOUR FEET, HIPS AND SHOULDERS TO THE CLUB FACE . . . Square your “toe line”- a visualized line across your feet, to the bottom line on the club face. Then make your hip line and shoulder line parallel to your toe line. See Photo 6.

Because your eye line is also parallel left of your target line, as you turn your head to look at your target (after the proper alignment), you will actually feel that you are aimed about 3 yards left of the target with your shorter irons, 5 yards left with your longer irons, and 10 yards left with your driver. This is a condition called parallax that creates a distortion as you view your target from the side of the target line. You have more than likely been incorrectly aimed and/or aligned if you sense different measurements.

Playing Better Golf Has Never Been So Simple!

Green Glory: A Visual Tribute to the Courses of the Majors- Golf’s Renowned Venues A Book by: Linda Hartough and Patrick Drickey

Swilcan Bridge, The Old Course at St Andrews All of us who play the greatest game have, at one time or other, known the feeling of a special round, a beautiful golf course, a memorable day. We carry the images of that day with us, forever, and though they may fade over time, the feelings and emotions that we once experienced can be quickly recalled and relived. For the competitors at the highest level of the game, the playing fields reserved for the four Majors are the landscapes and backdrops of the best their sport has to offer. In “Green Glory: A Visual Tribute to the Courses of the MajorsGolf’s Renowned Venues” (Stonehouse Publishing), a stunning coffee-table book that combines the world-class talents of two passionate and award-winning golf artists, golf- landscape painter Linda Hartough and photographer Patrick Drickey, we are all given a chance to appreciate the Major courses, and to remember the events that make them special, as well as to soak in the history and traditions that add to their luster. Linda Hartough (who I profiled for the 2005 edition of On The Green Magazine) proves again that there is no one more 68 On The Green magazine

The 16th at Merion, site of the 2013 U.S. Open adept with a brush and canvas and access to the world’s great courses than she is. World-renowned and internationally honored, she is the only artist ever commissioned by the United States Golf Association and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews to do the annual paintings and prints for the U.S. Open and British Open Championships, as well as being the recipient of Golf Digest’s prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award” (though obviously still active and producing the highest quality of work in her field). www.onthegreenmagazine.com

Patrick Drickey is likewise at the top of his considerable game, a celebrated landscape and architecture photographer whose dream of capturing the soul of golf’s courses and performers, on film, led to a career as one of the world’s great golf photographers, and whose pioneering work with panoramic images set the game’s standard (Drickey is also, thankfully, the founder of Stonehouse Publishing, publisher of ‘Green Glory’). When you combine the richness and detail of Hartough’s landscapes and Drickey’s photographic images in one

DUNES CLUB RENOVATIONS When the PGA Professional National Championship comes to the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in 2014, the nation’s top players among the club professional ranks will compete on 18 holes of new Champion ultradwarf Bermuda greens. The venerable Dunes Club, one of the last Grand Strand courses to feature bent grass greens, made the change over the summer. “Champion has been very successful,” says Hamilton. “From the standpoint of putting quality, we wouldn’t make a change unless we expected to get conditions that are better or the same that we have right now.” In addition to getting the new Champion grass putting surfaces, the Dunes Club is expanding its driving range, adding new tees and improving drainage capabilities at its 11th and iconic 13th holes. “There’s really been an explosion of ultradwarfs in the Carolinas,” says Hamilton. “As an owner or club member, you don’t have to be concerned with losing your greens with ultradwarfs.”
