ART CENTERS – The area’s community art centers bring the arts alive in many different forms. Associations of artists, craft persons, and potters show, sell and teach in community based galleries such as Franklin Square Gallery, 130 E. Brunswick Town, a colonial site dating from 1726-1776 served as a Cape Fear River Port that was the major export of naval stores and the location of the Stamp Act Rebellion. Fort Anderson was a Confederate fortification, which was Fort Anderson/Brunswick Town part of the Cape Fear Defense System until the Civil War engagement of February 1865. NC MARITIME MUSEUM @ SOUTHPORT – 204 E. Moore Street, Southport. Houses a collection of memorabilia pertaining to the vast nautical history of the Lower Cape Fear and southeastern North Carolina. You can easily follow the self-guided tour throughout the exhibits and on-site Research Library. View a 2,000 year-old 54” Indian canoe fragment; read Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet’s touching pleas for clemency, before he was hanged, peer through the eye-piece of the 35’ periscope, enjoy the extensive collection of delicate ship models, including those

built by the late Col. Herbert Franck, see the shipwreck City of Houston display which will bring back memories of great-grandmother’s home of 1878; learn about hurricanes and listen to the weather forecast on marine radio and more. 204 E. Free. 910.457-0003. www. ncmaritimemuseums.com OLD BRUNSWICK COUNTY JAIL – Corner of Nash & Rhett Streets across from the Olde Smithville Burying Ground, a must see for history buffs. The Jail was built in Southport in 1904 for a low bid of $6,738. It is a two story brick building laid in 1:6 bond. The jail has two cells and a runabout on the second floor. Each cell was designed with four bunks, a commode and a wash basin. Still visible upstairs is graffiti Old Brunswick County Jail drawn by prisoners. The most notorious “criminal” to be booked in the facility was movie actress Sissy Spacek. Some of her scenes were filmed in the Old Jail during the summer of 1986 and may be seen in the movie “Crimes of the Heart”. Usually Open May- October: Wednesdays & Saturdays 12:30pm-3:30pm. The Stephen King based TV series “Under the Dome” continues to film in Southport. OLD BALDY LIGHTHOUSE & SMITH ISLAND MUSEUM – built in 1817, is North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse. During her 86 years of service she guided many ships safely into the mouth of the Cape Fear River. She was retired in 1935. She is open to the public for tours. Open: Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm and Sunday 11am-5pm (Memorial Day–September). Tuesday-Saturday 10:00am-4:00pm and Sunday 11am-4pm (Octover–December; Part of February–March). Admission Price: $6 Adults (13 & over); $3.00 Child (3-12); Free Children 2 & under. Historic Tour: Depart Deep Point Marina on the 10am ferry upon arrival you will visit a civil war fort, hear stories of pirates, river pilots, and life saving crewmen, and climb to the top of Old Baldy. Groups of 12 & more 910.457-7481. www. oldbaldy.org OAK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE – 300 Caswell Beach Road, Caswell Beach - adjacent to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Oak Island. The Oak Island Lighthouse was completed in 1958 at a total cost of $110,000.00. The structure stands 153 feet, but because it stands on a slight rise the light is 169 feet above the water. The light is two banks of four, 1,000watt, 125-volt GE Halogen lamps in a “canister” type housings with highly polished mirror to reflect the light out in a powerful beam. The top bank of four lights is used for normal operation; the lower bank is for backup. Each light has its own signature flash pattern. Oak Island

Lighthouse characteristic light flash pattern is four-1 second flashes followed by 6 seconds of blank for a 10 second rotation. It can be seen 24 nautical miles offshore. There is no spiral staircase but instead a series of ships ladders with a total 131 steps to the gallery level. In 2004, the lighthouse and the surrounding property were deeded to the Town of Caswell Beach, along with adjacent beach front property, as part of the Federal Land to Parks program. The U.S. Coast Guard continues to maintain the light as an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse grounds are open year round for viewing. 30 minute parking provided at the base of the tower is open sunrise to sunset. Public tours for anyone 7 years of age or older to the second level (12 ships ladder steps) are available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am–2pm starting the Wednesday before Memorial Day and running through the Wednesday after Labor Day. Tours to the top for anyone 9 years or older are available year round and require prior reservations. Top tours must be scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance on the Friends of the Oak Island Lighthouse website. Make sure to wear sneakers. Free. www. oakislandlighthouse.org PRICE’S CREEK LIGHTHOUSE – is 20 feet tall with a red brick exterior. It was built in 1848. The lighthouse, although not operational, is the only one still standing of eight lighthouses built along the Cape Fear River between Oak island and Wilmington. It is located on private property but visible from the Southport-Fort Fisher Ferry as you leave the Southport dock.

Bill Smith Park Course is currently laid out with 9 baskets and two separate Tee Pads for each, offering two distinct approaches to the baskets. Bill Smith is a wooded and technical course where accuracy and disc control is paramount to distance and a good Ace Race course. Cougar Country Disc Golf Course #1 Leeds Rd in Boiling Springs Lakes. Cougar Country is currently laid out with 9 baskets and two separate Tee Pads for each. Cougar Country offers some tight technical baskets as well as some let it hang out fairways. The longest of which is a Par 3, 440’ reach. Cougar Country also offers some possible Ace baskets. An additional nine baskets are planned for the future to make an 18 basket course. Brunswick County Disc Golf Association is the only organized disc golf group in Brunswick County promoting the sport at this time. We have two hospitals with excellent reputations for service and care, Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport and Brunswick Novant Medical Center in Bolivia. Healthcare in the Southport-Oak Island area also includes quality specialized physicians, clinics, immediate care, long term care, home health care, and alternative services. Dosher Memorial Hospital, located at 924 N. Howe Street in Southport, is a fully Joint Commission accredited critical access community hospital with 25 staffed acute-care inpatient beds and 64 licensed skilled nursing center beds. It is staffed by more than 50 board-certified physicians, 320 employees, and 200 hospital volunteers. The hospital is overseen by a publicly-elected board of trustees. Services include a 24-hour emergency department, inpatient and outpatient surgeries and procedures, cardiac rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary/respiratory therapy, diabetes and nutritional education, diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, lymph edema management, physical, occupational, and speech therapies, and a skilled nursing center. In addition, Dosher Medical Plaza, located at 4222 Long Beach Road offers services including digital mammography, DEXA bone density scan, xray, outpatient lab, a specialty center and high-field fixed base MRI. Dosher Sleep Laboratory opened in late June 2010 for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as apnea, narcolepsy and chronic snoring.
