TheBUILT Idea is more open space & green : 6870 sqm community and social village.

The Brief of the project is to design a social housing in Milan, Italy. The Idea is to combine several users in one complex area. Our Idea is rather than make one single tall building; we decided to use all the site as our experimental playground. Different height of the building define the different users. We combined different gross area and variant typology into the site. After doing some research, we arranged the classification to 3 major building: The Long building dedicated for three bedrooms family with commercial function at the ground floor, The Big building is used as well for two bedrooms family with a market as the ground

and Luis Barragan. I took Barragan as my study case. The flow of the research is by reading several books, then archiving some part of the books which one is important for understanding the design method and which one is less. This section called by book of books. In this section, I divided the research into six categories: Culture & History, Landscape & Nature, Color, Design Method, Travelling, and important mark. After that, we tried to demonstrate the design process by 3d models. I made two models which explain how Barragan works in his two projects: Satellite City Tower and Gillardi House. Barragan was famous for his using of different spectrum color, but it arrives from many elements, especially his understanding of light and openings. Barragan color is not a mere color; it interacts with its surrounding. Barragan puts consideration in the different sun penetration in the change of the day which makes his use of color and composition even more poetic. He used materials with texture, so it will be blend with the shadow which falls upon the wall.

The aim of the subject is preparing the student with different approaches which are used by several architects. With this knowledge, the student can understand, and if they are interested, they can use one of the approaches as their methods of doing design studio, which came in the next semester. In this subject, the student learns to know many design techniques by reading one of Rafael Moneo's book: Theoretical Anxiety and Design Strategies. After reading it, we adapt the method to explaining certain topics and choose one specific architect to be our subject. Our group chose Minimalism as a subject. We have John Pawson, Tadao Ando, SANAA, Aires Mateus,

domino effect for its surrounding and become a stimulus for developing the next development process. So it works like a filament which keeps its continuity to create a new network. For the big framework, we choose the function as retreat center because they will have the different range of facilities. The important issue in this development is the access. The first step is to connect the beach to the saline area. We create a continuous walking & bicycle bridge beside a park on the street level. The Function of the area is more for man-made, which allow more footprints (because of its near to the city part). In this transition area, we designed the private resort and the festival area for big event. The second step is to connect this public island to the saline area and the city. We created a bridge for easier access and farming community. The third step is to connect farm part to land part and saline area; We decided to continue the bridge which is going down to the island. Also, we put another option of activities, the part of the site which is suitable for horse riding; The last step is to connect land and lagoon. We tried to make as light intervention, So we just design a deck, which allow people to go closer on the lago.

Status: Architecture Design Studio II Project:2015 Site: Medau Su Cramu Cagliari, Italy Team: In collaboration with Hadrian Tombak & Karol Gwadiwski Supervisor : Leoni Fabrizio, Andrea de Matteis, Cesare Ventura In this Design Studio II course, the student has to deal with a different range of site scale. The First task was more about dealing with big area, and the most important thing was about master planning. The site is in the southern part of Italy, on Sardegna Island, at the bottom of the island, In the city of Cagliari. We went for site visit and learned more about the different characteristic of three different locations. The First location, was this project. It is located at Medau Su Crane, An abandoned salt production site which is now on process converted to an agritourism because of it also close to the nature park. Our idea is called Filament because we consider that the most important thing when dealing with a big area is how to handle the process pieces by pieces. Why Filament? Our idea is working on one section which can create a 1

of design concept, blending between public function surround and the hotel service itself. About the arch, in the beginning, it’s only a basic Roman part in the facade. Then came up the idea to use it as not only a structural function but also creating a different ambiance of the building. We tried to use it in different approach with a three-dimensional axis and new material. The last element is the Landscape. In the beginning it’s about the existing of greenery which we think necessary to keep and also how it connect with Piazza Palazzo. Making a harmony between it, nature that leads to manmade build and vice versa. Make it easier to move from one part to another part, creating the same language with invisible lines made by a vertical connection. About the building itself, The main function is used as hotels with facilities that can also enjoy by the public, like a restaurant and auditorium. The hotel has a typical floor with two types of the bedroom. The lobby area simply used the beautiful space shaped by the arch that comes up from the bottom structure.

This site is still part of the architecture design studio II. It was the smallest site which deals more with the city context. The design approach started with analyzing the existing area and found several elements that are strong to be emphasized as living museums. These three elements are the old wall, the arches, and the green landscape corridors. These common languages have potentials to be explored more and give identity which will convey special characters compare to another part of the Cagliari. About the old wall, in the beginning, it’s just a history of series decay walls. Three walls which convey stories of Cagliari, facing Piazza Palazzo and guiding pedestrian visually. We came with a beautiful idea of using the wall as part

The market is one of a vital element, which every city must own for its local economic growth. European city has a long history of its public market network. Urban market systems in the 21st century can be vital centers of exchange connecting rural and urban environments and places that anchor local culture and social life for all residents. Milan as one of leading in the industrial city and economic growths in Italy, has already owned several existing local markets, which are called ‘Mercato Comunale ‘ where it is placed in the various neighborhood because its functions to serve the local community. Nowadays, this feature is reduced and replaced. These permanently covered markets MERCATI REBORN are no longer become theCOMUNALE center of local urban A STRATEGY OF URBAN INTERFERENCE 06

APPROACH COMPACT CITY The area is denser with particular typology. The buildings are mostly mid-rise building (between 3-7 storeys), the ground floor is usually used for commercial. Because of its density, all of the building inside the block commonly attach each other and has an inner court as the result of enclosure mass. The example is all the old part of European city.

SYSTEM OF BLOCK

STRATEGY BELONG TO THE STREET

BELONG TO THE BLOCK

1

Strengthen the idea of the street as a network.

Strengthen the identity of the block Tension between void & solid

Connect with other existing systems (open space, ring street, greenery, gray areas of city, etc.)

The idea of the secluded block in the city has to appear as a way of designing physical appearance. It helps to define the border of the whole block and still holding the same identity in the area. What can be interesting is the way to show that actually inside this secluded mass we have a void as a breathable area in the city density.

The street is always connecting one place to another place. In this term, because all the market lay in the system of the road in the city, they have the capability to be a connector. The new building of market should embrace the idea of giving something to the public activity not only to the market itself

2

Blurring lines between public and privat

Boardening the energy and the impact of the part of the street (junction/nodes/median) to the surrounding area. Since it has the idea of a network, which can go everywhere, The Market can be a contagious energy impact. Starting from where the market placed, the surrounding. until the bigger framework , for example: the city.

In the urban city block, the boundary between public and private is strict. With this kind of public function, the market can play the issue of public and private with a large range of transition. The building can stress the idea of the public inside a block, which made an intriguing feeling.

adapt this characteristic of fragmentation as our method to design the area, and use walking avenue as spine that tied up all this fragment. The area has 3 big islands as the center of function: student housing, hostel, and rental housing. This 3 big islands glued by one centralized avenue that bound it with commercial, leisure, and public space function. We called the spine as a city stage which offers many kind of activities, refers into Jane Jacobs quote : the point of city is on its multiple choice, so all the users can freely choose their favourite activity. This long avenue become some kind of urban stage display and catwalk for city life, where people can stroll along the pathway from the street to the waterfront.

Berlin has been shaped by the uniqueness of its placemaking history. This city always be one of succesfull example of melting point culture, ranging from art untill daily life style. Berlin multi cultural characteristic is reflected also in the form of the city. From the research conducted by Unggers and Rem Koolhas(1977) proposed an act of urban amputation to strengthen and preserve these neighborhoods, intensifying the city of Berlin into an archipelago of pieces each with a distinct morphological identity, and connected by a neutral park setting which would act as a 'green glue'. for organizing masterplan. Although, the hotel has a very deliberate contrast against the existing design, grid, stands diagonally to make it prominent from the pedestrian. The shophouse design form get the inspiration from traditional mataram buildings in sasak village generally used as houses or granary. High ceilling performs the function of insulating high temperature in mataram. Moreover, big open plaza will provide for visitors in front of the area to accomodate social activities. The Development phase for the whole site generally separated into two major stages, and the competition currently focusing at the first stage that located at west. However, we founded that this condition made the site narrow, and the rear part of the site will potentially desolated. As the result we proposed to divided it into two construction steps which each of it have the main anchor points, hotel and department store at the front and cinema at rear.

The main idea for this competition is inspired by the weaving process while making the woven fabric, different colors, materials, are combined together and become a spectacular fabric, very beautiful. Tenunan sasak means combining the best values as one Interwoven fabric that respresent in plan to built this area to entwined itself from all leading potentials. The weaving of all potential aspects such as historical value, ecology, social, and commercial combined is what offered from this proposal. This design was the chosen proposal. The idea was to adapt the nature surround the current site. Around the site, we found a lot of wood trunk which has a beautiful pattern. We took this as our inspiration, the trace of the wood. The shape of the building is fluid like the organic shape of the wood trace. The fluid shape creates open space and inner space itself. The material of the building was also considering the wood mood and tone. The arrangement was quite simple, the service and administration area on the back side of the building and the dining space on the front side (both indoor and outdoor).

This project is located inside the biggest and the oldest public amusement park in Jakarta, Indonesia. The current condition of the area is degrading of its quality because of the economic problem. The design brief from the new development of the area is to create a new area of a culinary park. This supposed to be the first step of the strategies to activate the entire sector. We began the project by doing research on similar Food Junction project. We analyzed the arrangement, economy value, and the broad of the area. After making study comparison, we proposed two different alternatives.

On the 2nd floor, the arrangement is more fluid, with open deck which is used as a shared space between all of the tenants. The roof is designed for roof garden, the purpose is to make it belend with surround area.

In the tropical country, the definition between interior and exterior quite blurring, since it has a pleasant weather almost all the year. The building is more like a shelter than a massive protection. The idea of blurring space become one of our concern. Since the building located in the dense city, letting nature come as part of a private house can reduce stress level causing by crowded and dense situation outside. So the idea is to use the house as escape sanctuary for the owner.

The house is designed for a family who loves gardening and cooking. The site is unique, located at the hook and have many facades along Sutera Telaga Biru Utama street. Total land area: 1495 m2

Another interesting process is when designing the small gazebo for the swimming pool. It is common in the country to have a small sheltered structure to enjoy the relaxing time, usually after taking a swim or in the spare time. The idea is to have a simple shape with a wooden mood as the primary material.

The house is expected to be 2 level( 1st floor & 2nd floor) with facilities such as private swimming pool and library. The dream is to have the attractive massing to the ‘hook’ land and maximum view to the precious scenery on site. This objective is investigated in design approach.

V Massing form allows more spaces to catch the best view in the inside and attractive massing from the outside

Both living space and communal space get the best view (swimming pool, garden, lake)
