URBAN VITALITY 01 HOTEL DESIGN OF WANGFUJING

4th year academic project Individual work Tutor: Chen Zhe Fu Yuefeng Time: 2012.9 1

DESIGN INSTRUCTIONS The project is locate in the north of Wangfujing Street, Beijing City,P.R.China. Located

near the very central of the old city. Wangfujing has been a popular place among tourist from all over the world. The streets and buildings originated in Yuan Dynasty, which has a history of hundreds of years. This program aims at building a commercial hotel for travellers and visitors. Besides, I take the city, the people, the location and the development of street into consideration in order to make an appropriate building for this area.

LOCATION With

the reputation of ‘king street’, Beijing wangfujing street is a commercial street with a long history, which is also a tourist center and commercial center of Beijing city. Wangfujing plays an important role of city life. Under the background of rapid change, Wangfujing street from a traditional shopping street developed into a city central business district with variety of function.

GOOGLE MAP IN TEN YEARS--2003-2012 According to the investigation of Google maps, we find that more and more commercial building and space are being built in ten years.

The public space of the commercial pedestrian

street is the stagnation point in the process of people marching forward. People can rest there and have conversations and entertainment.

less commercial

For linear space of the commercial pedestrian street, reasonable layout and changeful node space can make the whole of the pedestrian space more rhythm, make the space more interesting and colorful. The square before the Catholic church, is the most brilliant node space of the whole wangfujing commercial pedestrian street. The western classical style of the Catholic church and the surrounding building have vast differences in the architectural style, which become the most important part to attract people. The site, as the end of the space, appears too dull and monotonous resulting of the stream of people gathered in front of the Catholic church, and almost terminated there. There are few continue to flow northward. So we decide to design a plaza to attract people moving forward as well as a public space in the whole street.

of the street represents the stream of people walking to north, The cylinder in the east of the cylinder shows the stream of people walking to south. 9:00-12:00

The chart shows people distribution and volume between 9:00 and 21:00 in Wangfujing street. We can conclude by the statistics that: 1. The amount of people that walking to the north did not continued when they reached the site . 2. There are lots of people gathered in the rest area or plaza 3. We can see from the chart that people volume are far more less in the north than south.

Problem to SOLVE:

1. Provide a plaza which will attract people to flow northward along the street when they reach the site. 2. Disperse people density in the south.

The plaza can lead the crowd of Wangfujing street influx to the hotel and increase the guest volume. The sunken plaza consists restaurant, rest area, and store, which will attract people to flow flexibility in the site. There are several water platform to connect the podium of hotel and sunken plaza. It can break the boundaries of internal and external of the hotel and improve the permeability.

The Balance of openness and privacy

The public rooms are changeable, it could be use for eating, drinking, chatting or resting. Guests can not only enjoy the recreation in the podium part, but also can enjoy the service in the tower. Also, the communication balcony space can promote the communication between guests as well as provide a place for guest to watch the view of Beijing city.

The interior decoration materials of lecture hall are mostly using sound- absorbing material, the reverberation time calculation results comply with the design requirments. Side walls use the MLS diffuser, undulate. It could active indoor space form as well as even the indoor sound. The back wall uses wood sound absorbing structure which have good sound absorption property. The suspended ceiling uses cascade arrangement which will reflect the sound from stage to the back of the hall.

SHAPE FORMATION

THE HOUSE locates in Nan luogu Alley, Beijing, P.R.China. This area are mixed commercial area with Hutong residence basically. People live here are limited in low house which the sunlight is very poor and short of green space. In order to solve problems, I design the small house with relatively big window allowing direct sunlight. On the 3rd floor, there is a roof garden where family could contact nature, enjoy sunlight and street view.

Because the site is limit and small, I decide to break the limit of level restriction in order to make space lively. There are two variable functional terrace between 1st and 3rd floor. Without the clear boundary line that delimits partition is lain between, the house make life more earnest.

SITE INTRODUCTION Location JIANGUOMEN STREET

The site is located in the west corner of Ming Dynasty Wall Relics Park, which is in the centre of Beijing.

Historical Background CHONGWENMEN AVENUE

BEIJING RAILWAY STATION

INTROSPECT. LINGER. TRACE

Ming Dynasty wall was built in AD 1419, 24km long. It has a history of more than 580 years. Ming Dynasty wall was gradually removed since 1950 because of some historical reasons. For a long time, the Ming city wall ruins have been occupied by units and residents. According to field investigation, some of the city wall bricks were demolished, some of the rammed earth were removed. The residents caused great damage to the original walls. As a result of the existence of a large number of units, residents and markets, the site environment was extremely bad. In 2001, the government started to vacate the units and residents to repair the Ming Dynasty wall. The renovation project of the city wall based on the principle of protecting the historical style and features of the relics wall. The relics wall was restored to its former appearance in 2003.

Block analysis

According to the traffic situation, it can figure out how people and cars reach the site, thus I can decide the entrance of the museum.

There are 7 blocks around the site.

MODELING VOLUME The site is located in a area that HISTORY matters. So I decide to display the history and development of the site. [ PAST ] gallery aims at showing Ming Dynasty Wall history, [ NOW ] gallery represents the development of the site until now. The two part connect with a hall.

1. Guide people with escalator and cross-floor escalator The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal

THE BEIJING-HANGZHOU GRAND CANAL flows through Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Contact the five drainage---Haihe river, the Yellow River, Huai river, the Yangtze river and the Qiantang river. The total length of 1794 km.

The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal is divided into seven segments, Tongzhou District is the starting point of the north canal. During the sui and tang dynasties, although the political center of China is still in central plain, but economic center has moved to the south. So it is necessary to transport the food, cloth and other rich resources of south to north to meet the needs of bureaucrats and army.
