TYPOGRAPHY OF THE 1980’S
The 1980’s
was a vibrant, loud and stylish decade. The typography of the time was much the same being heavily influenced by popular fashion and music. It was a time when technology was beginning to be introduced in daily lives, futuristic prediction and styling was all the craze and the range of neon colours were invented. Through the introduction of the first of the Apple computers, still known as Apple Macintosh at the time, a digital style began to form in the world of design. Most famously portrayed by typographer April Greiman many designs contained boxy typefaces, repetition of shape symbolic to the typefaces on a computer as well as a bright or chrome colour palette and shine in design. Cyber-punk and geometric styles were ever popular as well as the rise in Science Fiction movies and designs. Many movie posters of the time used bold sans serif fonts with neon lighting or glow chrome affect in some many. Display typefaces were widely used throughout the hold decade in advertising and entertainment. Although the style of the time is extremely bold and whimsical in its futuristic appeal generally typefaces were easy to read as well as eye catching.
