Rachael and Rob Myers For the Love of Pierogi Cover photo by John Liviero, Sooters

Dear Neighbours, I’ve never been one for perogies. I once had a supervisor that loved to eat perogies when he was stressed out, so it somehow got into my psyche that perogies equals stress. I can’t shake it no matter how hard I try. It’s my Kryptonite.

My wife April, however, loves them and even explores many of the different flavours and varieties that are now becoming popular. Our cover feature this month looks at a family that decided to make perogies for a living. It’s a fun story about a family that has roots deep in Riverside. If I had my way, I’d probably open a burger shop and start selling “The Hamburger of Death”, which, believe it or not, actually reached the point of being tested by a national burger chain. “The Hamburger of Death” (not its name as it was being tested) contained three quarters of a pound of beef spread over three patties, three different types of bacon, three different types of cheese, topped with three large onion rings, served on a sesame seed bun with a heaping load of fries on the side. It was supposed to be the Superbowl of burgers, served as a promotion for the big game. This is probably why I don’t own a burger joint myself. I’d inadvertently kill my customers with grease and fatty oils. The Myers family on the other hand, might just kill you with kindness and love. There’s still lots of time left to enjoy outdoor barbeques and to discover all the beauty Riverside has to offer. It’s a wonderful place to live and a great time of year to be outside. Thanks for checking out our magazine and spending a little time exploring a bit of what the neighbourhood has to offer.

Our Apologies

Endless Summer:

Stuffed Jumbo Shells

60th

Annual The Janisse Family Picnic By Karen Tinsley | Photos by the Janisse Family

Recipe by Little Foot Foods | Photo by April Savoie

What would summer be without a picnic? Windsor’s Janisse family wouldn’t know, because they’ve been picnicking together since 1958! Janisse Family 1983

Ingredients

Janisse Family 2017

30 Jumbo Shell noodles

2 – 28oz can tomatoes

1 medium onion

1 celery (chopped)

For the kids, it’s always been all about the penny hunt and the jelly bean count. For the grownups, it’s the egg toss. And let’s not forget the food! For 60 years, it’s been potluck picnic fare, with lots of opportunities to taste and share old and new favourites. In the early years, Uncle Lawrence--who worked at Purity Dairies—could always be counted on to bring lots and lots of ice cream. Then there’s Cousin Greg from Markham, who can always be counted on to bring his signature smoked pickerel. Picnics have always been synonymous with summer for the Janisse family. When Pepe Tancrede and Meme Viola Janisse built their home at 204 Janisse Drive in Riverside, they hosted backyard picnics, normally culminating with an all-ages baseball game at St. Rose Park. But 9 boys and 4 girls later, the Janisse family outgrew their homestead backyard—and the inaugural Annual Janisse Family Picnic was held in Windsor’s Memorial Park on August 3, 1958. Over the years, the picnic has changed location many times, but one thing remains constant: this large family’s dedication to timehonoured tradition. Bruce Janisse says, “Today, even with busy schedules and more and more of our family living outside the Riverside/Windsor area, our annual summer picnic is still well-attended. We’re expecting at least 50 this year.” The 60th anniversary picnic took place on Saturday, September 15, just as we were going to press. Stay tuned for our October issue for more details and photos!

Resident Feature Rachael and Rob met in 2006 when spotted her from across the room at a party. The two instantly hit it off and were married in July 2011. “We got married in Costa Rica,” Rob remembers. “We realized what we originally wanted to do for the wedding probably wasn’t going to work. We already had booked a vacation to go to Costa Rica to see Rachael’s aunt and uncle. We were unsure of what we should do. The thought popped into my mind and I asked her if she would like to get married in Costa Rica on our vacation. She again said yes! With a little under two months before the date, we spoke with our parents to make sure they could go.

Actor and comedian John Candy was a Canadian icon known for big hearted buffoon-like characters in blockbuster movies like Splash, Home Alone and the Great Outdoors from the 80s. But most people never really knew about his love of perogies. Candy loved himself a good perogy and would often have his favourites shipped from a Winnipeg restaurant to his home in Toronto. That’s the magic of a good pierogi. Once you’ve discovered your favourites, you’re addicted. For Rachael and Rob Myers those pierogi come from an old family recipe made by Rachael’s grandmother. As a young girl she would spend time in the kitchen assembling the family pierogi and grew a strong passion for cooking. “My grandmother taught my mom how to make pierogi,” Rachael says. “They taught me how to make them when I was a young girl and the recipe got carried on through me. I didn’t spend much time in the kitchen as a teenager and I stopped making them for a long time.” It wasn’t until years later when she was married to Rob that the family tradition resurfaced.

We wouldn’t have done it if they couldn’t be there. We didn't tell anybody else. We went to Costa Rica and got married. We still had a celebration with our families when we got back. It was perfect!” Rachael’s family grew up in Riverside where she attended St. Rose and F.J. Brennan Catholic High School. She also studied Communications and Political Science at the University of Windsor where she obtained a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Arts in Political Science. Along with Little Foot, she also works at Metro part-time. Rob attended Brennan as well, and studied Business Administration at the University of Windsor with a focus on Management and Marketing. Both his parents, Tedfred and Nancy, worked in the

“We walking down Ganatchio Trail on our daily walk and I asked her what she’d make if she was going to cook for people,” Rob recalls. “When she said her grandmother taught her how to make perogies, I realized I've never eaten a pierogi from her. We went home and made a test batch in our little apartment kitchen and gave it all away.” And now the Riverside family is engulfed in pierogi. They opened Little Foot Foods on Tecumseh Road about five years ago and offer nearly 40 different flavours at this point. Even though their lives may seem tied up in pierogi, there’s much more to this amazing Riverside family than just a Polish delicacy. Both of them were born in the neighbourhood and they’ve lived within a 15-block radius their whole lives. About a year and a half ago they welcomed their son Ellis to the world and they’re nestled comfy in their home. “When we looked and realized we had roots planted here in Windsor we bought my grandfather’s house,” Rachael notes. “My mom lives here; Rob’s mom lives here and we're happy living in Riverside. We don't want to leave and I don't like hearing people bash Windsor because It's a great place to be.”

The family loves being outdoors and tries to spend as much of its time as they can in area parks like Bridges Bay and Kiwanis. They also enjoy long walks along the Ganatchio Trail. “Walking is a great stress reliever,” Rachael says. “This neighborhood is pretty and I like walking to the park when there’s a baseball game on. That’s what I’m going to do right after we're done with this interview for example.” Along with the parks, the waterfront is also another place the family visits regularly. “Oh my goodness, the water is like two seconds away,” Rachael continues. “I couldn't imagine living in a bigger city let alone growing up in a city that didn't have water like this. I love that we have so much green space and a gorgeous waterfront.”

When they don’t have time to explore the neighbourhood, they relish hanging out in their picturesque backyard. “This is my dream house in my dream neighbourhood,” Rachael concludes. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” Along with Ellis, the family also welcomes pets Buttons and Watson to their home. Buttons was named because he lays around like a pile of buttons and Watson got his moniker because he’s intuitive and curious. Much like John Candy did, Rachael, Rob, Ellis, Buttons and Watson are living a life full of love, passion and pierogi.

Home Selling In The Fall

Clean Out the Fireplace for the Fall Real Estate Market

Nothing smells like fall than smoke from a woodburning fireplace. If you have a gas fireplace, light it when buyers come through. If the fireplace is filled with cobwebs because it hasn't been used for months, vacuum it out and wash it down.

By Goran Todorovic, Broker at Team Goran

Home selling in the fall is the second-best time of the year to sell a home. Families have returned from summer vacations. Kids are back in school. The holidays aren't yet upon us. We are able to enjoy 75 to 80 days of normalcy, and that's a great time to sell a home. We watch leaves explode in vibrant colours as for sale signs pop up in yards. People are happy and relaxed as the temperature begins to drop. It's not just sweater weather that creates static electricity in the fall; it's the scurrying of agents diligently working to add a few more sales under their belts before the busy holiday season creeps up. Here are some great tips for attracting the fall home buyer:

Utilize Fall Accent Colours

Toss a quilt or fall-coloured throw over a chair. After you've cleared away the clutter and depersonalized each room, bring a little bit of the fall hues to each room by placing bold-coloured accent pieces in odd groupings such as 3's and 5's. Create a fall centerpiece for the dining room table by arranging pine cones and nuts around orange candles, stick in a few leaves from the yard.

Clean Up the Yard

Rake dead leaves and debris in your lawn. Don't let overgrown vegetation block the windows or path to the entrance. Cutting bushes and tree limbs will let the sun inside and showcase the exterior of your home. Cut away summer vines and cut down dead flowers.

Get prepared now for the busy fall market that will soon be upon us. Call Goran Todorovic at Team Goran with RE/MAX Preferred Realty Ltd 519-979-9949 or visit www.teamgroan.com for your FREE home evaluation and Start Packing!

Create Fall Curb Appeal

The most popular fall flowers are chrysanthemums (or mums), and they bloom for a long time. Both mums and marigolds are available in the fall. Plant them in pots. Place pots on the steps and along the sidewalk. Accent with pumpkins or other types of squash.

Farrow Riverside Miracle Park Reaches Another Major Milestone With Official SOD TURNING CEREMONY By Farrow Riverside Miracle Park | Photos by John Liviero (Sooters)

On Wednesday, August 8th, 2018 at the side of the Farrow Riverside Miracle Park at 6755 Wyandotte St. E. gathered donors, dignitaries, community partners and baseball fans together for the official sod-turning ceremonies. Since the council approved to lease the land for a Miracle Field back in October 2017, it’s been full speed ahead. The Miracle field is one of several key elements in the $2.5-million Farrow Riverside Miracle Park which, when it’s completed, will have a new recreational pathway, a fully accessible and inclusive children’s playground, and a relocated Cenotaph to honour the Riverside men and women who served in two World Wars and other global conflicts.
