Mª Luisa González Madrid, Spain (1958) Researcher in an exciting field in which Physics, Biology and Medicine meet She seeks solutions against the health risk posed by bacteria fixed on surfaces, especially when it comes to implant surfaces Professor of Applied Physics, she participates in the teaching of Physics Degree and in doctoral training of the University of Extremadura (UEx). She is also coordinator of the Biosurface and Interfacial Processes Research Group (BIP) of the UEx, and of the Microbial Adhesion Group of the Center for Biomedical Research in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN), dependent on the Carlos III Health Institute. The research team that she leads is leading works based on the collaboration and complementarity of the people who compose it, trained in Physics, Medicine, Chemistry, Biology or Engineering. Furthermore, the research they carry out has national and international projection, working in coordination with other groups, both in Spain and in other European countries.

Mª Teresa Antequera Cáceres, Spain (1959) She is the promoter of a multidisciplinary research group that has developed a non-destructive methodology through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and computer vision techniques to evaluate quality characteristics of meat pieces Professor of Food Technologies at the Faculty of Veterinary of the University of Extremadura. Her research activity is integrated into the Meat and Meat Products Research (IProCar). Her priority research lines address computer vision on MRI to assess the quality characteristics of meat pieces and the Microencapsulation of bioactive compounds for the development of healthier meat products. She has directed 13 doctoral theses and participated in more than 60 research projects. She has been Vice-Dean of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Extremadura, and Coordinator of the TECAL Research Group. “I research to know what I do not yet know and to communicate or announce the novelty” (Paulo Freire). This phrase reflects her feeling about teaching and research.

Mª de Guía Córdoba Villanueva del Duque, Córdoba, Spain (1969) She researches the improvement of food quality and safety Doctor in Veterinary from the University of Córdoba and Professor of the Nutrition and Food Science Area of the University of Extremadura. Since her research beginnings, she has conducted studies aimed at controlling health risks and hazards in food, by applying rapid techniques for the identification, characterization and monitoring of pathogenic microorganisms. In her post-doctoral stay she consolidated her knowledge in the field of Molecular Biology, sequencing and characterizing genes related to the synthesis of peptides in Streptococcus thermophylus. She is co-author of more than 100 scientific publications in the field of Food Quality and Safety. Currently, she is leading the University Institute for Research in Agrarian Resources INURA, and is also the researcher in charge of the CAMIALI Research Group.

Almudena González Arroyo de la Luz, Cáceres, Spain (1985) Her research work is focused on the development of technologies to transform organic waste into biogas She has a degree in Environmental Science, a Master in Environmental Pollution and a PhD in Science from the University of Extremadura. She´s founding partner and head of R&D dpt. at Metanogenia, spin-off of the University of Extremadura, specialized in the development of biological products for the generation of biogas from agro-industrial by-products and the provision of services for the monitoring and operation of biogas plants. She has been awarded as young scientist of the year in the field of renewable energy, in the first edition of the “Muy Jóvenes Científicas Awards” of de magazine “Muy Interesante”. Award that recognizes young researchers who, for their dedication and excellence, constitute a role model for girls and adolescents who will make up future generations of scientists. In addition, Almudena regularly participates in outreach sessions in the field of renewable energies and in activities to promote scientific vocations in girls and adolescents.
