Antònia Maria Cirer Costa Ibiza, Spain (1957) Professor of Natural Sciences for 35 years (currently retired) and independent researcher of the evolution of island lizards Since 1980 she has visited all the Pitiusas islands and islets to study the populations of lizards, applying for the first time biometric, genetic and colorimetric techniques simultaneously. She carried out the first comprehensive study of all the Pitiusas islets and their lizards. It was performed applying multivariate calculation techniques to the biometric study of 40 populations of lizards. This was supplemented with genetic studies using protein electrophoresis. She pioneered the use of physical color measurement of the lizards with a colorimeter, to avoid subjective descriptions of their color. By doing so, she has established a direct correlation between the degree of differentiation of the lizards (melanism and gigantism) and the age of geological separation of the islet where they live.
Anna Traveset La Seu d’Urgell, Lleida, Spain (1961) Ecologist specialized in investigating the ecology and evolution of species interactions She has worked on island ecology for more than 30 years, mostly in the Mediterranean but also on Canary Islands (Spain), Galápagos (Ecuador), Berlengas (Portugal), Seychelles (R. Seychelles) and Ogasawara (Japan). Prof. Traveset received her BS in Biology from the University of Barcelona. Her PhD work was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania, performing fieldwork on plant-insect interactions in Costa Rica. After returning to Spain, she conducted postdoctoral research at the Doñana Biological Station (EBD, CSIC), Seville. In 1992 she moved to Mallorca where she has been doing research until now. She has c. 300 publications in scientific journals (c. 200 in SCI-indexed journals) and leads the laboratory of Terrestrial Ecology at IMEDEA. In 2017 she was awarded the Premi Rei Jaume I for the environment protection, and in 2022 the Premi Ramon LLull awarded by the Balearic Islands Government.
