PORTFOLIO a collection of architectural projects by Apurva Vinod Naik 2011-2018

Hello. My name is Apurva Naik

I am enamoured with the relationship between human beings and the space around them; in creating spaces which evoke emotion through the interaction with material, detail and structure. I believe in learning from the past traditions and techniques, the present requirements and interpreting for the future. Architecture to me is a constant process of learning and development. I believe in designing not only for the humans but also for the environment they share the space with.

SCAD Thesis Winter-Spring 2018

AUGMENTING CHURCHGATE The brief of the project was to create an understanding of the the historical importance of Indian architecture. Western cultural influences have eroded the ways and means of the construction culture. Through this thesis, I would like to create an awareness and set an example which respects the past and enhances the current and future design processes in India. THE ARCHITECTURE FOR TH OF THE ABSENT THESIS FOR REDESIGNING CHU STATION IN MUM

HE PRESENCE PROJECT RCHGATE BAI

At any given moment, architecture is adapting and evolving, continuously creating and overlaying layers of history and memories. As the pages are rewritten, in the present, issues of authentic architecture in modern day architectural interpretations has developed as a major concern across the globe. The image of the cities is constantly altered by cultural influences and also progress of new scientific theories. Subsequently, the boundaries of a definitive architecture are destroyed and the reality remains as a image of the past which is slowly forgotten. Indian architecture has come under succesive waves of Western Culture influence and progress of new scientific theories in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Subsequently, it effected the architectural features and the existing urban fabric of India. Furthermore, cross-cultural trends were cut from the past intellectual creations; informative literature, art and architecture, devaluing it from its “Indianness”. This thesis looks into the legacies and philosophies of Indian architecture specifically concerned with the city of Mumbai where the issue is most prominent. The loss of character is equally reflected in the loss of the essence of Indian architecture. Modernization has thus imitated the western culture in the Indian context. This thesis is an exploration of the principles and functions that laid the foundation of Indian architecture and revive its dying heritage. This will be supported by looking at the plight of architecture in Mumbai which is the biggest and the busiest metropoliton city of India. Today’s Architecture mus u t maintain the culture of its place and continue its legacies; respecting the past while adapting to the future. Hence, this projject of redesigning of a local train station suggests way ys that Indian architects can revisit the theoretical underpinnings of Indian philosophies in order to fully harness these potential contributions to the architecture’s sense of place, authenticity and character; re-awakening the forgotton past of Indian history.

ANALYSIS Exisiting station Private office space

DESIGN FLAWS IN EXISTING STATION Design caters to metrics first, then other aspects of design Lacks human experience Public space Lacks the sense of an entry space Platform and concourse Design fails in crowd management Lack of emergevncy services Conflict in circulation of office users and general public Architecture contradicts the locality in which it belongs Lack of environment-friendly design HVAC dependence on energy intensive mechanical equipment Inadequate space for pickup/dropoff (conflict in traffic leading to congestion on roads) Inadequate human comfort during peak hours Design contradicts the guidelines in The Station Design Manual Not a satisfactory symbol of Mumbai

Concourse Office space

Platforms Grand entrance Laying down the base area accomodating the station platforms

Layering in order to create an additional useable space to accomodate concourse on second level leading to segregation of the user groups arrival and departures

Creating large space for the entrance hallway. Pushing office activities towards the back, hence, secluding the office activities from the usual commuters and avoiding hindrance

Chamfering the edge of the elevated spaces to create a smooth transition in the side elevations and merge with the context seamlessly

POINTS OF INTERVENTION Pick up location Smooth transition to further activity through enhanced connectivity Availability of designated spaces

DESIGN GUIDELINES

Ease of access to the commuter with consideration to the large amount of footprint everyday.

- MATERIALITY The use of traditional building materials to match and reflect the local design aesthetic and their durability.

- VERNACULAR DESIGN Vernacular constructs are a result of a dialogue between the ecological, economic and social factors of a particular region. Techniques include drawing energy from nature and utilizing in building HVAC.

- HUMAN DESIGN The Architectural space should reflect the human need by integrating materials, climate and cultural practice into architectural forms that meet the needs of the individuals and groups.

RE-ENVISIONING ST. MARYS The brief of the project was to transform the old abandoned area in the city of St. Marys, Georgia which was a site for the mill industry into a buzzing neighbourhood that reflects the city’s character. This would be materialized by creating avenus for local jobs along with housing and other attractions from the locality. This project was presented to the municipal council of St. Marys in November 2016. Skill set: Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop ArcGIS Autodesk AutoCAD Autodesk Revit Trimble SketchUp Pen Sketching

MASTER PLAN Greater town

“To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh, to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf lines of the continents for untold thousands of year, to see the running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can be. - Rachel Carson

THE CONCEPT

The simple idea that was the basis of the project was to have a self sustaining community, A one-stop-shop for the residents to Live, Work and Play in the very same locality. The program makes provisions for revenue generation by encouraging small local businesses and artisans of the town. Creating an iconic community would enhance the tourism to St Marys drastically and attract visitors from the neighbouring town of Jacksonville in Florida.

GURUKUL The aim of the brief was to address the growing need of architects in the city of Nagpur, India. The project materializes by a design that helps accentuate the creative side of the students. One of the goals was to respect the environment by adapting passive heating/cooling techniques. The primary goal was to create an environment that promotes the healthy interaction between students and faculty through architecture as a medium. o facilitate a sustainable design strategy, various climate responsive techniques were implemented which included but not limited to the orientation of the building; aligned in the north-south direction and entrance provided to the west. This enhanced the full utilization of daylight during class hours. Vertical louvres act as shading devices for the primary spaces and

From the planning perspective the open air theatre is strategically located in the centre which is accessible from all sides acting as a node for student interaction. Accessible garden terraces act as open to sky interactive spaces.

GHARONDA The idea of this project was to create a weekend home that aimed for a disconnection from everyday world and provide a beautiful environment that will act as a medium for healing, mental peace and rejuvenation. The challenge included provision of all requirements in a small confined space on a large plot. LESS IS MORE The main objective of the design was to create a home away from home, a place for rejuvenation and disconnection from every day stress and activities. Hence priority was given to nature than the Lintel beam confined space. STRUCTURAL FUNDAMENTALS Based on a concept that is modular and built easily on site. Simple principles of a load bearing design is adopted from the local region. Also the design is such to mirror the unit and create a dual unit for the neighbouring plot.

DESIGN CONCEPT Design intends to create a disconnection with everyday world amidst nature. The community is located far away from the city. Also the design techniques used are adopted from the local style of village architecture. Vernacular aspects exemplifies the feel of architecture when in the space.

A universal design for structural system has been incorporated in order to facilitate multiplication of same structural system in the varying terrain of the vicinity for future land development. Incurring a reduction in production costs. A simpler load bearing system can also be used at places with a small gradient. Locally available materials are used in construction most of which are available on the proposed site, would drasctically cut down on construction costs facilitating sustainable design. Vernacular style of sloping roofs, stone and timber combined structures adopted from local settlement practices.
