THE BEAUTY OF NATURAL STONE We believe natural stone coping brings a timeless beauty to your swimming pool. Natural stone has a rich texture, adding character and warmth. Each stone shows variability in color between them, making every inch of your coping perimeter feel unique. It blends with any natural surrounding, has a high resistance to the elements and always looks natural even if it wears.

STANDARD WHITE This surface is clean and white. It inherits the qualities of the mold in which it is poured, making it perfectly smooth.
TERRAZZO This is where the top surface is mechanically ground off to reveal the aggregate. The surface is smooth and visually appealing.
PRECAST COPING We trust Federal Stone precast coping for their safety, appearance and cleanliness. Precast coping is swimmer friendly with its bullnose and safety edge designs. The AQ and DQ have a raised safety edge designed to give your pool a defined edge and provide many safety benefits, such as helping swimmers get in and out easily. The DQ is the same shape as the AQ, but adds a row of raised diamonds that run across the center of the stone. The SBN brings a more contemporary look with its 2½” thickness while the RS and RSE feature the “SureGrip” texture on the surface, making them very slip-resistant. There are several types of Federal Stone precast coping, including standard white and terrazzo.

Craftsman’s Corner Selecting the right materials for your pool renovation is vital. We believe it’s important to be knowledgeable about the many tile, coping and plaster options available. This section was designed to teach you everything from the basic anatomy of a pool to how tile is made. We want you to feel as confident as we do in the materials we’ve used for decades.
THE ANATOMY OF A SWIMMING POOL PLASTER
POOL TILE Waterline tile is the main 6” band of tile just beneath the coping of the pool. It visually compliments your pool and makes it easy to clean the waterline. Pool tile comes in many materials and colors and is manufactured to be water and freeze resistant.
Plaster is the most common finish for in-ground swimming pools. It is a mixture of marble dust, cement and water, but can also have quartz, pebbles or colored dye added to create different textures and water colors.
POOL COPING
Decking is the surface area surrounding an inground swimming pool, but can also extend to include patios or house decks. Decking can be a wide variety of materials, such as concrete, brick or natural stone.
Swimming pool coping covers the entire perimeter of the pool and can be made out of a variety of materials, such as natural stone, brick or precast concrete. Coping is mostly an aesthetic component, but it’s also important for aiding swimmers getting in and out of the pool.
BOND BEAM The bond beam is a reinforcing portion of concrete that supports the pool wall and prevents cracks.
DECKING
CAULKING Caulk is a glue used to bind joints which are subject to expansion, such as the space between the coping, decking and tile. Traditionally, caulk is light gray, but other colors are available.

HOW TILE IS MADE The process of making tile dates back over centuries. Today, it is used in a wide variety of settings and is one of the main components of swimming pool design. While they used to be made by hand, ceramic and porcelain tiles are now commonly made by a process called dust pressing. Ceramic and porcelain tiles are created from allnatural materials extracted from the earth, mostly clay and minerals. These ingredients are mixed together with water to create a mud-like mixture. This mixture is pumped into a large dryer resulting in a fine clay dust that feels like sand. Next, the clay dust is pressed into the tile shape to create the body of a tile, commonly called a bisque. At this stage, it is time to add the glaze, or the glassy-looking substance on one side of the tile. The glaze is normally made up of a combination of silica, alumina and calcia. To give the tile more color, pigments are mixed in with the glaze ingredients. The glaze is applied by either a highpressure spray or is poured directly on the bisque, although applying the glaze will not immediately change the appearance of the tile until it is baked. Now the tiles are ready to bake in the kiln. Most modern kilns have several temperature zones, which the glazed tiles travel through. Porcelain tiles are fired at a higher temperature than ceramic tiles, making them more durable. The kiln burns out any impurities and bonds the materials into the final tile. This complex process means that shade variability is an inherent quality, making each and every tile unique.
Dry plaster (left) and wet plaster (right).
COLOR AND PLASTER Plaster not only adds a unique texture to your pool, it also helps determine the color of the water. Water color is affected by many factors, such as the size, shape, and depth of your pool, along with the landscaping and amount of sunlight. The color can also be affected by improper water chemistry, which can even cause a blotchy appearance on your plaster known as mottling. Lighter-toned plaster will create a refreshing and clear color while darker tones will create a more rich and dramatic color. Be mindful of the specific mood you want for your pool and consider how your plaster choice will affect the texture and water color of your final design.
ADVANTAGES OF DIFFERENT COPING MATERIALS NATURAL STONE: Natural stone coping provides a contemporary and timeless look to your pool. It has a rich texture, making it slip-resistant even when wet. There is a wide variety of stone colors and patterns available and they’re all impervious to pool chemicals and natural elements.
BRICK: Brick coping brings a rich, earthy feel to any pool and comes in many unique colors and textures. It is easy to maintain and stays cool even on hot summer days.
PRECAST CONCRETE: Precast coping has a smooth, rounded edge and is available in different shapes and finishes. The bullnose and safety grip edges are designed to make your pool accessible and safe. Pearl Craftsman Catalog | 31
