He has a Ph.D. in zoology from MSU and has measured ongoing evolution in human populations, as well as studied the history of the Darwinian theory of evolution by natural selection. The Lake Line: Grand Rapids, Grand Haven & Muskegon Railway in 2011. He is working on the history of the street car in Grand Rapids and has received 2 awards for his research. Jan. 7 – West Michigan’s Legendary Logging Era: Step back into the 19th century and view Michigan’s wooden age, when lumbermen cut down pine, cedar and hardwood forests to provide logs, timbers and cordwood to fee industries that included saw mills, furniture factories and chemical works. Among questions that will be answered are: Who were the lumber barons? What role did the Grand River and railroads play regarding logging in West Michigan? And finally, why didn’t the lumbermen practice sustainable logging?

2

Jan. 14 – The Street Car Era in Grand Rapids: Step back in time and ride the various modes of transportation in the early days of Grand Rapids. Professor Bajema will use photos, maps, advertisements, time tables, news accounts and humor to show what it was like to live and travel in GR between 1865 and 1935. Ride the horse cars and cable cars up and down Lyon and Michigan street hills, as well as the steam dummy trains to Ramona and North Park and the street cars and interurbans. What great history of Grand Rapids! M: Bronze $16 Silver $12 NM: $21 (per lecture) Location: Browne Center

Her most recent publication is on the American abolitionist and novelist Lydia Maria Child, but ongoing research projects include an essay on vampires and another on missionaries. This course will showcase some of the best moments of British literature from its Anglo-Saxon beginnings to its current postcolonial moment. Reading mostly shorter texts such as poems along with a few longer works, participants will explore questions of love and hate, life and death, faith and doubt, self and other, and, above all, the boundless power of the human imagination. Matt is vice president for University Relations at GVSU. Prior to joining GVSU, Matt spent six years as Public Service Commissioner for the State of Michigan as well as being a journalist and news executive at WOTV.

She is a member of the Association of Personal Historians and creator of Pam’s Pocketbooks – Distilled Wisdom for People on the Go. In this class you will learn the what, how, when, where and why of life story writing and review. With a few simple writing exercises, you will discover for yourself that you don’t need to be a writer to create something of lasting value for yourself and future generations. It’s easier than you think to capture your story on paper, in your own words, with your own voice, from your own point of view. Your story matters; your story has the power to inspire, motivate, enlighten, delight and even heal, both yourself and others. Thursday, 11:00-1:00 pm Jan. 31

Keith St. Clair is a political science professor at GRCC. He holds a M.A. in political science and B.A. in sociology from Illinois State University. Keith now serves on the board of the Michigan Political Science Association and is an active member of the World Affairs Council.

Mary O’Connor is a writer and amateur cook living on a small organic farm in West Michigan. Maple Hill farm is a life change from the successful marketing company she owned in the Detroit area. Detroit’s loss is most certainly OLLI’s gain.

Join Keith St. Clair as he examines the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict up to the present day. Although both have long histories that complicate matters, many of the reasons for the current conflict began in the late 19th century. We will examine the internal divisions within the Israeli and Palestinian communities that make a resolution more difficult today and how these divisions play into the politics of the region. He will look at where the peace process has stalled and where it may eventually lead.

Looking for a lovely way to spend an afternoon? Join OLLI’s favorite amateur cook, Mary O’Connor, for a celebration of food and life, and learn how to make a delicious, homemade bread and pasta! As always, she’ll include a little history, a bit of science, helpful hands-on demonstrations, and plenty of stories and good things to eat from her Maple Hill Farm.
