Located on the eastern edge of Grand Rapids, Aquinas’ location allows students to reap the benefits of living in Michigan’s second largest city. With over one million people in the greater metropolitan area, Grand Rapids plays host to numerous festivals, concerts and cultural events each year. Aquinas’ campus creates a peaceful environment that is just moments away from the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. Residing on 104 wooded acres, the Aquinas College campus blends early twentiethcentury architecture with modern-day structures. The campus is home to over 107 species of trees and shrubs, winding woodland paths and inviting creeks and ponds. Only 30 miles from beautiful Lake Michigan for a relaxing afternoon.

Aquinas College had its origins in the Novitiate Normal School begun by the Dominican Sisters of Grand Rapids in 1886 in Traverse City. The Novitiate Normal School was transferred to Grand Rapids in 1911, and in 1922 it evolved into Sacred Heart (later Marywood) College. In 1931, the College was renamed Catholic Junior College. In 1940 the two-year program at CJC was expanded into a four-year bachelor's degree program and the name of the College was changed to Aquinas College. Aquinas College was originally located in downtown Grand Rapids. In 1945, the college bought the former Lowe Estate on East Fulton Street where it has remained until this day. In August 2011, Aquinas College will kick off a year's worth of festivities celebrating its 125 years of Catholic Dominican post-secondary education in Michigan. The celebration of the College's quasquicentennial (125th anniversary) will be highlighted by four signature events that will shine a spotlight on the values that have guided the College throughout its history: prayer, study, service, and community.

The 2012 season brings much excitement and new challenges with it for the Aquinas Women's Lacrosse team. The program makes the shift from the WDIA to the NWLL, the NWLL is made up totally of other NAIA varsity programs and will present the Saints with a very challenging national schedule. Besides playing other NAIA schools the Saints will round out their schedule with NCAA D2 and D3 programs. "This brings our program more in line with all the other varsity programs at Aquinas and is an exciting time within the NAIA and the WHAC." states Head Coach Frank Rogers. "We will now have regular season games with other schools within our conference, including defending NWLL Champions, Indiana Tech. Other WHAC schools competing within the NWLL are Davenport and Siena Heights. Aquinas will welcome back one of the most prolific scoring attacks in the country lead by Hannah Brogger (Sr., Harbor Springs), Michelle Murphy (Sr., GR Catholic Central), Kati Rogers (Jr., Portage Central) and Lauren McCarty (Jr., GR Catholic Central). This group has been playing together for three years and work very well together. The quartet is joined by Bailey Terebinski (So., Flint Powers) and newcomer, All-State player, Alexandra Burns (Fr., Ladywood), who in fall ball was asked to switch back and forth from attack and midfield. "Both Alexa and Baily will do anything you ask and play anywhere you put them, they are both very valuable pieces to our success."
Junior Lauren McCarty Defensive returners Samantha Fogus (So., Midland-Dow) and Alisa Skluzacek (St Charles, IL) have worked very well with the new players and with fellow upper classmen, transfer Monelle Bradshaw (Corel Springs, FL/Florida Gulf Coast). They have provided strong leadership for freshmen Meaghan Farrell (GR Catholic Central), Mackenzie Yoas (Grand Haven), Jolie Williams (East Grand Rapids) and Celia Kaechele (Forest Hills). Goalies Meghan Gray (So., Guerin Catholic, IN) and Keegan Maltby (Jr., Ladywood/Mt St Joesph College) both received valuable experience this past fall ball season when Stockall was doing a study aboard in Spain. "Those minutes in games and the chance to lead the team in practice and work with our defense more in practice really helped both of them, we have confidence in both of them, that when called on they will perform very well for us." stated Assistant Coach Katy Mohr, who leads the teams defense.
Junior Liza Flewelling will anchor the midfield and will be joined by a very strong group of returning sophomores. Taylor Truttschel (Hartland, WI), Abby Lux (Northbrook, IL) and Samantha Hughes (Colerain, OH) all contributed last year as freshmen. Coach Rogers has added a strong group of freshmen. Haley Jacob (Rocky River, OH), Hannah Seelman (FR, Portage Central), and Kenzie Klingenberg (Grand Haven) will help round out this group which is called on to play both ends of the field. The Aquinas defense will again be anchored and lead by co-captain Bre Stockall (Jr., Okemos). Stockall returns from an All American season in which she allowed less than five goals per game. In front of her will be a very quick and athletic defense, almost all of them comes to Aquinas after playing summer travel lacrosse for Head Coach Frank Rogers. "These young ladies may be freshmen on paper but not in experience. Almost all of them have played at least one year of summer ball for my travel team and have a very good idea what we are doing on defense and what our expectations are. This past summer we won all three tournaments we played in and shut down some very good teams, we are very excited to get them on the field and playing for Aquinas."
The Saints open their 2012 season on March 5th vs. Birmingham Southern University. Aquinas will play their first NWLL game the following day vs. Reinhardt in Birmingham, Alabama. The Saints home opener will be March 15th vs. newly elevated NCAA program Calvin College. "We have the best fans in the world and have always drawn bigger crowds than any other team we play. We thank our Aquinas community and look forward to seeing you all out there again this year, cheering us on." states Frank Rogers.
