The Aquinas Way who we are

our mission and vision

Part of the world-wide Order of Preachers, we are a Catholic, Dominican-sponsored graduate school of theology and ministry in St. Louis, Missouri.

At the heart of all our programs is the unique Dominican approach to education that holds as its primary purpose a search for Veritas, the One who is Truth himself, Our Lord Jesus Christ, whom we seek to encounter in all of our programs, coursework and campus life, and whom we seek to share through our mission of evangelization, namely to be useful by preaching and teaching for the salvation of every person.

We offer multiple graduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of formats to accommodate the needs of our students. We are known nationally for two signature programs: a Master of Arts in Health Care Mission, and a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching — the only one of its kind in the country. Aquinas Institute is a Center of Institutional Studies, designated by the Order of Preachers to form Dominican friars who are firmly rooted in the rich intellectual tradition of the Order in order to carry out its preaching mission. We are charged with fulfilling the Order’s Ratio Studiorum Generalis, a six-year course of study required for all Dominican friars throughout the world We serve two distinct, complementary constituencies: Dominican friars preparing for ordination to the priesthood and pastoral ministry, as well as priests, religious sisters and lay men and women preparing for careers in service. We welcome diversity and those of other faith traditions. Aquinas is a close-knit community. As members of the Dominican family, we share life together in a variety of ways including liturgy and worship in our beautiful chapel. We enjoy conversation over meals and at social events. We participate in service programs and social outreach to the wider community, and value forums that provide the opportunity for open and respectful dialogue on important issues and topics. Impelled by the Catholic faith and the Dominican mission, Aquinas Institute of Theology educates men and women to preach, to teach, to minister and to lead.

2

Aquinas Institute likewise undertakes its intellectual mission in the same spirit of St. Thomas by following his example. We seek the Truth of Christ as it has been revealed to us in the Holy Scriptures and Tradition of the Church and we strive to understand it by our engagement with others, with men and women from various cultures, backgrounds, and social strata, which is the contemporary reality of Church and the world in our own time and place.

Fr. Charles Bouchard, O.P., S.T.D., is a Dominican friar in the Province of St. Albert the Great. He serves as senior director, theology & sponsorship at the Catholic Health Association of the United States (CHA). He assists the Catholic health ministry nationwide as an author, educator and consultant on the church’s theological and ethical teaching. He is also executive editor of Health Care Ethics USA. Prior to joining CHA, Fr. Bouchard served as provincial of the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great from 2011 to 2015; as vice president for theological education at Ascension Health from 2008 to 2011; and as president and associate professor of moral theology at Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis for 18 years. He was instrumental in beginning Aquinas’ Master of Arts in Health Care Mission program, as well as the nation’s only Catholic doctoral program in preaching. He writes and lectures on issues in health care, health care ethics, Catholic identity in sponsored institutions, and the intersection of political life, religion and faith. Recent publications include Whatever Happened to Sin: Virtue, Friendship and Happiness in the Moral Life, published by New Priory Press in 2013, Sexuality and Morality: Answers for Modern Catholics, published by Liguori Publications in 2014, and How to Listen to a Sunday Homily, published by Sunday Bulletin in June-July 2017. In addition, he edited a volume of essays on theology and health care entitled Incarnate Grace: Perspectives on the Ministry of Catholic Health Care, published by the Catholic Health Association in 2017. Fr. Bouchard entered the Dominicans in 1974 and was ordained in 1979. He completed doctoral studies in moral theology at The Catholic University of America in 1987.

Fr. Craig T. Holway has served as pastor of the St. Joan of Arc parish since 2015. Located in South City, St. Joan of Arc is known throughout St. Louis as a vibrant, urban community with a strong commitment to being missionary disciples who know and live the joy of the Gospel. Under the charismatic leadership of our honoree, Fr. Craig Holway, the St. Joan of Arc community has grown and flourished. Central to life at St. Joan of Arc is the community’s celebration of the Eucharist which in turn has created an active and engaged parish life with eleven organizations that serve the people of God in a variety of ministries including the South City Catholic Academy, a K-8 grade school. Born on February 18, 1978, Fr. Holway and his twin, are the youngest of four children. Raised in the St. Louis area, he attended St. Pius X school in Glasgow Village and St. Ferdinand in Florissant, Missouri, graduating from St. Thomas Aquinas Mercy High School in 1996. Fr. Craig earned his bachelor’s degree in American Literature from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2001, then worked five years in non-profit development before entering Kenrick-Glennon Seminary in 2005. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2010 by Archbishop Robert J. Carlson. His first assignment was at Mary Queen of Peace Parish in Webster Groves where he served from 2010 to 2013, followed by St. Joseph Parish in Cottleville from 2013-2015. In addition to his role as pastor of St. Joan of Arc, Fr. Craig is an adjunct lecturer at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and a part-time chaplain at Bishop DuBourg High School. In his free time, Fr. Craig enjoys reading, biking, hiking, and working in the yard.

Event Committee and Board of Trustees “I agreed to co-chair the Great Preacher Award Committee this year for several reasons: because, as a graduate of Aquinas Institute, the course of my own life and ministry was changed and I believe the mission of Aquinas and this award to promote great preaching are more critical than ever for the Church and for society; because the Church quite literally cannot grow and flourish without great preaching; and on a more personal level, because Fr. Charlie Bouchard is one of the greatest preachers I know and has been a close personal friend for 44 years.” dr. dan o’brien, committee co-chair
