A M I T B H AT I A Hi, I am Amit Bhatia, student of architecture and currently enrolled to a B.arch program. I am presently pursuing my 6th semester of B.arch studies and need to get through with an intership of minimum 100 days in a reputed Architectural Firm as an academic requirement. I, as a student have a pretty wide range of work that consitute my current portfolio. I have extensively experimented with the work I have done. My taste for exploration takes me through to various multi- disciplinary sets of work. A major portion of my design thinking period is consumed by the anticipation of the outcomes and the influence of my design in the greater world and thet broader aspect. In the past 4 years, i have explored many things and developed the skills by looking around and experimenting. I am looking for an oppor tunity where I can learn and enhance my proffesional knowledge.

Pedestrian precinct About the project Baba Kharak Singh Marg forms an important axis between Connaught Place and Gold Dak Khan, a building of historic importance. Baba Kharak Singh Marg also has some ancient historic stuctures located around it; these are ancient Hanuman mandir, Bangla Sahib Gurudwara, Saint Columbus Church and Irwin Road Mosque and Jantar mantar which is located on adjacent Sansad Marg. There are also Emporiums located on this street dealing in handicrafts of different states of India, making it a street showing diverse culture of india. The aim of the design project was to make Baba Kharak Singh Marg a Public Plcae by providing pedestrian linkage from Gol Dak Khana to Connaught Place. The idea was to give an identity to this street by creating visual axis and pedetrian linkages to various historic structures and emporiums on this street, also to give pedestrian access to Gol Dak Khana, which at present is a traffic island.

Analysis : Major pedestrian and vehicular conflict zones
Connaught place
- Pedestrian vehicular conflict at every junction between blocks. Conflict in front of the Central Park entrance due to heavy pedestrian crossing from Palika underground market. - Heavy pedestrians originating from metro station gate no. 6 conflicts with the informal markets all around the Palika. - Informal market leads to heavy pedestrian attraction which ultimately effects the vehicular movement. - Also, the events organized in and around central park thereby making it a central hub and high intense area for pedestrians. - Pedestrian crossing between kisoks with informal activities (kiosk) creates halting zones, making it difficult for cars to move.
Hanuman Mandir and Palika Bazaar Gol Dak Khana
BANGLA SAHIB: - Easy movement of vehicular traffic because of red lightbut conflict between pedestrian and vehicular occurs due to entry & exit of Bangla Sahib undergroud parking. - Informal religious market at the turning of entry/exit points attracts the pedestrians creating difficulties to cross in front of the entry/ exit gates. - Auto hault creates obstruction in traffic movement. GOL DAK KHANA : - Major roads intersection- Ashoka road & Baba Kharak Singh Marg which corresponds to heavy flow creating conflict zone.
Spatial analysis Areas that can be restructured
PALIKA : - Encroachments of shops with time. - Palika metro station gate number 6 and Central - park gate adds high pedestrian intensity due to informal activity. HANUMAN MANDIR : - Conflict between vehicular and pedestrians because of the cars getting parked at the adjacent roads of hanuman mandir which results in two way road being treated as one way. - Inactive use of subway by the pedestrians due to - no proper legible signage. - Beggars act as barrier. JANPATH : - Cars moving inside the Janpath lane blocks the way of pedestrians coming from inner and outer circle. - Entry and exit of LIC parking opens in front of the Janpath lane creating a conflict zone. .
Pedestrian precinct Concept
Forming connections and creating spaces Continuity of pedestrian precinct by merging open interactive and underutilized spaces with the existing built forms and creating inter-connected vehicular free zones is the basic theme of the design. Mixed landuse activities enhances the importance of the stretch and the proposal of socio-cultural centre , commercial hub and urban haat will promote more social interactions and opportunity for public developments.
Conceptual sketch showing the connectivity of the stretch through sky walkways, subways and pedestrian red street
Design Approach
Subway- Developing an underground informal market with seating. coloured street- running along for directing pedestrian at a particular way. SKYWALK-pedestrian movement above eye level around the roundabout providing an axial view to baba kharak Singh marg.
Underground Plaza The concept of underground piazas is widening of the existing subways and increasing the floor height done to merge the informal activities and seating below ground level for enhancing the space and its functionality while awaring the pedestrians for its better usage.
Commercial cum office
Terraced form
Pedestrian friendly zone
To make it a pedestrian precinct : - Red street is a new concept of focusing and directing the pedestrians along a particular path at surface level connecting direct linkages with various informal activities. - Open piazas and sculpture courts in front of emporiums acting as places for social interactions among the diverse cross section of public. - Skywalks and pavements creates linkages with side cafes to attract the pedestrians walking along them. - Continuous Cycling tracks running continuously along the roads from inner circle of connaught place and gol dakh khana. - Non – motorized travel can encourage more frequent use and circulation within the precinct.
Sky walkway
SUBWAY-Widening the subway to 85m for its interactive as well as functional use. Keeping the pedestrian continuity in an interactive space from hanuman mandir complex to Emporium. COLOURED STREET-focal point of red street starting from central park and connecting pedestrian precinct zones like urban haat and Janpath. SkywalK-Connecting the Skywalk with commercial cum office complex directly to resolve vehicular pedestrian conflict.

Street Mall About the project The project was to design commercial complex was in Dwarka with the intent to attract maximum people from neighbouring housings. A space for hotel and office area was also supposed to be plan on this site. The metro line also acted as the major source of public influx. Being the first mall of Dwarka, a four- screen multiplex, hotel and retail shops were to be provided.
Cocenpt streets are the most lively and refreshing place to be at. while walking on a street one can expericence many activities goin on a street at the same time. So it was the key idea to give users a place where every space, every place is linked with all the activities in a mall, physically or visually. streets are more or less like western bazar, a colonaded market. street facilitated public interaction and it was the basic idea of the concept, to make such enviornment where everything interacts with everything.
The cocnpt was appliead by creating a 150m long street, so if a person enters from one side one could see a real long street. To give emphasis on the visuality, the street is kept 20m wide and 27m high build along its sides.
Form The pedestrian axis to the site were drawn as they define ones movement towards the site from the nearby context. The building form was then evolved around these axis so that the movement of the pedetrian is not hampered but also providing proper focus to the entrance of the complex. The entrances were drived through these movement axis The shape of the street is derived from the movement pattern that would be on site 1. metro traffic 2. neighborhood traffic 3.vehicular traffic. As streets has some junctions too, so where all the movement pattern meets at a point, a junction is created called node and is marked by a fountion just like in a street.

L.I.G Housing About the project The site was situated in Dwarka Sector 20 near Bharthal village. The project was to design a Low cost housing for the low income groups and main focus was supposed to be given to their needs. The aim was to provide about 900 units, and to create a different living enviornment for the residents in a restricted area of 35-40 sq.m per housing unit.
Concept The idea is to design a well spaced and ventilated habilitation for the urban Society. The clusters are designed in such a way, that intersections are created with big green and interactive spaces between and around the clusters.
The idea was to enclose the green spaces around the buildings so as to provide shade, so green spaces planned at intersections and surrounded by the clusters.
The daigonal placement of clusters makes VENTURI COOLING EFECT possible. Courtyards and gren spaces are deigned on the intersection of every axis, free from visual obstructions, giving a clear axial view between the clusters. Thus one point of interaction cane be seen from the other point of interaction, which ultimately increase the tendency of interactions between people of the society.
Use of shifting balconies to make the facade interesting as it overviews at the green spaces.

Place making Abstract There was a time in our cities and towns when getting from here to there was a pleasant and often enriching experience. Streets and open spaces were places where people liked to be, to walk, to shop, to meet, to play, and even just to people-watch. the urban spaces were like a stage where the community came together and performed a variety show of activities. Then, as the automobile encroached upon our communities, people and the places were shunted aside. Walking from here to there became risky business, and the friendly quality of streets began to disappear. . What once was the essence of community got lost in the hustle of traffic. The last half of the last century was all about the car, the mall, the business park, the new town. But now people want to connect to something that feels more authentic. They want a casual, healthy and fun environment on to the streets. They want to connect to other people and interact with the community. This is what placemaking is all about, giving streets and spaces back to the people. It takes a place to make a community and a community to make a place. The 20th century was about getting around but the 21st century will be about staying in a place worth staying in. Placemaking is a concept and a method of improving the comfort, safety, attractiveness and vitality of streets and other public spaces so that everyone can use and enjoy them. This concept of placemaking has been used in the west to improve their public places. They western cities are known for their respect for public places which we lack here in India. This reasearch paper covers the factors of great public palces. This research paper also covers the social and economical importance of public spaces and how public spaces make a city work. This research paper is to invetigate what are the problems and major issues in indian public places which discourages people from using it and why previous attempts of making a place failed. The research has been done to study what are the barrier against a good public place.

A breif study of the historical background of public place has been done to understand the importance of those place. Also and attempt has been made made to find simple solutions for Indian public places can be considered as liveable, hospitable and socializing places and how can we transform a space to a place. Also a study of elements and principless which makes a normal public place to a great public place. Case studies have been done on western public places and Indian public spaces to study the negative and positive points of Indian public places and the various factors that are resposible for it. Further design proposals will be provided that can be used as design guidelines for public places making them a pedestrianized zone and encourage social interaction.
