Narratorium


Stories have always been an integral part of mankind. A Narratorium is essentially a place for story–telling. It involves all kinds of activities which enhance and help story-telling in any form – monologues, dance, drama, music, book reading, photography, painting, etc. According to humanist psychologist Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. According to this, right after ones basic needs are fulfilled, one craves friends or belongingness, and stories can play a very important role in creating this sense of belongingness.

People are busy today. most Metropolitan cities have a work oriented lifestyle. The Indian culture of story-telling, or physically conversing with each other, sharing incidents of everyday life, has become a dormant tradition. There are many traditional forms of storytelling like music, dance, poetry etc., and contemporary forms are also evolving as the awareness of this need is growing. Platforms such as StoryCorps and Humans of New York continue to make people happy and believe in people everyday. Certain other storytelling platforms are coming up in India as well, such as ‘terribly tiny tales’ and ‘scribbled stories’. While these contemporary forms of storytelling are great, and try to understand the need of the people while considering lack of time in today’s busy life, human contact in storytelling is also equally important. This makes a story more memorable. And a Narratorium can increase this aspect of human contact. It has been scientifically proven that when someone tells a story, his/her mind gets synced with that of the listener. Hence storytelling is often used as a medium to share useful data in an interesting manner. Often this is also used as a strategy for marketing. Popular packaged juice brand ‘Paperboat’ made use of our childhood nostalgia to market traditional Indian flavors of juice.


The Site is located in the heart of Delhi, quite close to Qutub Minar. The area is known as Qutub institutional area, and is surrounded by institutes, residents, shops and a forest named Sanjay Van. The idea of a Narratorium involves a number of spaces, which have a standard definition of what they are. But these spaces need to be redefined, to optimize them for conversations. Also, in my opinion, the way in which these spaces are organized, and the intermediate spaces defines the typology of this institute.

For the Narratorium, one major concern was to have spaces of incidental meeting. For his purpose spaces like a Public Plaza and Practice Space were provided. These encourage people to come to this place even if there are no events lined up. Subsequently spaces like small courtyards helped generate small performance spaces which are more informal, and are multi-purpose in use.

The city of Ahmedabad is the commercial capital of Gujarat. The intent of this studio was to understand the city, and then intervene as required. For the purpose of study, we selected a section across the city. This patch was selected based on the opportunities of study it provided, and the range and variation it had. The preliminary study involved getting a feel of this 20 Km long stretch, and present it in the form of a video. We had to understand the characteristics of each area, and present its nature in a neutral manner. Subsequently this stretch was divided among groups, and each group studied in detail their designated patch.

Our Patch spanned from Commerce 6-roads, which is the edge of an institutional area, till Lal-Darwaza, which is the beginning of the old city of Ahmedabad. The patch included some important commercial areas like Ashram road and CG Road, and 2 important Villages, Navrangpura village and Mithakhali Village. The area was studied in various layers such as Building use, open spaces, Green cover, Road hierarchy, General ratio of open vs built, Drainage pattern etc. Subsequently we analyzed these areas and came up with ideas for solutions to problems for various regions. Ashram Road has been recently declared to be the new CBD of Ahmedabad, While the existing FSI of this road is effectively 1.4, the proposed FSI is to be 5.6. To this, a number of public transport such as BRTS, AMTS and metro are to added along this road. These conditions provided us with the opportunity to see this central region of the city as a blank canvas, and redesign it according to the needs of the city.

My project was to design a transit node in the Ashram road. The primary concern was to provide breath-ability in this soon to be dense hub. Terraced gardens and shops of daily needs along with cafes for conducting meetings and a gym, were incorporated in the design, thus making this transit space a destination in itself.

Rajkot is the fourth largest city in Gujarat, and is the most important city in the Saurashtra and Kutch region. It acts as an industrial, Economic and Educational hub of the region. With the rapid growth of the city and the industrial sector, the population of the working class is bound to grow. These are the people who are the backbone of any developing city, and are generally migrants. This Mass Housing has been proposed on one of the connecting roads between the two ring roads of the city. This automatically provides access to a large number of public services like transport, hospitals, schools etc., and hence is an ideal location for them to live. Also, the immediate neighborhood consists of a number of small scale factories, a village, and many private row houses.

For providing housing to so many people, it is difficult to provide identity to every family. The space within each dwelling should be customizable to meet their individual requirements. This led to us designing flexible dwellings. These dwellings shall be designed in such a manner that the houses can change according to requirements in day/night or as and when the size and structure of the family changes. Furthermore, as opposed to a ground spread housing, where all residents have some contact with their neighbors, this gets reduced in a vertical housing. Overlooking floors were designed so that at least 3 subsequent floors are well connected, and this may lead to more knit neighborhood. Another concern was to provide more common spaces, as people of this class often have small houses, and a lot of activities happen in shared spaces.

CONCERNS Creating hierarchy of open spaces, which allows for open spaces of various scales, and at different levels of privacy/ publicness.

Inter-connecting these open spaces, so that anyone going outside from their house has to cross these open spaces. This creates a sense of them being active at all times. Separate vehicular and pedestrian movement. This ensures usability of the community open spaces, and do not get divided by moving vehicles.

Activity Area

Since there are a large number of families staying in a small area, the idea was to have common community spaces that enhanced the sense of neighborhood. A set of amenities was also added, which promoted group activities, and a sense of being complete, or introvert-ness within the place. Also as a sense of environmental concern, facilities such as rain water harvesting and gray-water recycling was also added in this housing. All in all trying to make this place as self sufficient as possible.


Typical Floor Detailed Plan

Each floor consists of two Comfort and three efficient dwellings. This was accompanied by a terrace on each floor, which was overlooked by the floor above. Stairs run from these terraces to the floor above, hence connecting the floors as well as the open spaces. While the number of rooms vary for either dwellings, each dwelling has provision for one proper balcony other than the kitchen service balcony.

Care was taken to make most open spaces overlook into the common open space in the center. The First floors of all buildings were also connected through stairs, straight from the central ground. This adds to the sense of even the large open spaces being in use at all times of the day. Furthermore, the raised space in the center becomes an active pedestrian only zone, as the parking gets limited to the outskirts of this place. This creates more usability for common open spaces.

The Intent of this studio was to take up a Neighborhood Center designed in the previous semester, and generate Working Drawings for the same. There were certain challenges of the site, such as the site was within the dense fabric of the old city of Rajkot, which is a very busy area throughout the day. Furthermore, the immediate context was a historic structure, which was once the guest house of the royal family of Junagarh. 52 families currently live in this place. Due to all these reasons, bringing in heavy machinery and making cast in-situ structures was out of question. I took up this challenge, and explored brick as a material. The entire institute is made using modular members such as brick, clay tiles and wooden members. 9

Slab Detail


RSP or Related Study Program is an intensive program held in the month of December for the first 3 years of our Architectural education. During this time, we visit a place, observe it, measure draw it, sketch it and document it. The documentation process is as follows: RSP-I Primary Settlement Patterns RSP-II Community Housing RSP-III Institutional Buildings Subsequently a report is prepared documenting all the collected data.

Jubilee Bandstand S

This was a Commissioned Project done in a group of 3. This bandstand is in dilapidated condition, in the middle of a garden. This leads to less use of the garden, and a lot of ill practices happening there. The project was a part of the redevelopment of this garden, for which this bandstand had to be documented in detail, before retrofitting it.
