The concept of being a responsible corporate citizen has been embraced internally by all units across the Company and its subsidiaries. The concept forms the underlining reasons for all activities. Good corporate governance principle is embedded in our operation process. Employees’ capability and public consciousness are always encouraged in the organization. Respect for fair and equitable treatment to all stakeholders are ensured. The Company’s corporate social responsibility standard has been enhanced through various activities that help instill awareness and desire to participate in environmental conservation among employees. Other activities include the effective management to reduce carbon dioxide emission and seek for a better way to compensate carbon dioxide emission. We also focus on quality of life in community and the public at large as shown by our wide range of activities. These activities have been seriously implemented, maintained and improved until today. Also, these activities as well as the underlining concept form a very strong foundation which will drive our sustainable growth in harmony with social and environmental development.

The Company has continued our social responsibility and environmental care activities since they are regarded as the key factors that support our sustainable growth. We sincerely believe that these activities are good things to be done. And we have determined to be a responsible corporate in view of all stakeholders. Apart from good governance, legal compliance, respect for human rights and equitable and fair treatment to all parties concerned, the Company has a very strong commitment to participate in alleviating issues that may have an impact on the society and environment as a whole. In 2011, the Company puts great emphasis on reducing carbon EJPYJEF FNJTTJPO XIJDI ÇOBMMZ IFMQT SFEVDF BEWFSTF JNQBDU PO UIF society and environment caused by global warming. In terms of business operations, we have expanded our business into renewable energy to reduce fossil fuel consumption in power production and to support the government’s policy. The Company has invested in renewable energy projects, including wind, solar and biomass, with a total capacity of 102.45 megawatts. This helps reduce carbon dioxide emission by 115,000 tonnes per year. A campaign for energy saving within our power plants, especial y at the Ratchaburi Power Plant which is the country’s largest power production source, has been introduced. Since the launch of the QSPHSBN JO 3BUDIBCVSJ 1PXFS 1MBOU IBT TJHOJÇDBOUMZ SFEVDFE FOFSHZ consumption by 42,248 megawatts-hours, representing 22,205 tonnes of less carbon dioxide. The Company aims to extend the energy saving program further to communities under the Community Energy Project which wil start in 2012 in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy. The Company’s experimental research in using carbon dioxide emitted from Ratchaburi Power Plant to grow spirulina algae began in 2010. Last year, we implemented the second phase of experiments to identify the environmental conditions that best support for the algae growing and use the most possible emitted carbon dioxide in growing. It was found that in a plot of one rai, algae use as much as 9.85 tonnes of carbon dioxide to grow, which is nine times higher than the volume of carbon dioxide absorbed by trees grown in the same size of area. This is one of the innovations we are most proud of. The manufacturing industry can apply this initiative as a model of managing carbon dioxide emission from the production process in an effective way while creating benefits to the society and environment. The Company also built the Global Warming Reduction Learning Center at the Ratchaburi Power Plant to provide and share with the general public the information about the Company’s carbon dioxide management efforts that help solve global warming issue.


Furthermore, the Company is very much interested in reforestation and conservation of forest areas, which are a major effective natural carbon dioxide absorber as well as the crucial sources of water, food, and energy to support human life. In the past year, “Love the Forest and the Communityâ€? project was continued for the fourth consecutive years. In cooperation with the Royal Forestry Department whose main responsibility is to protect natural forests, the project was initiated to promote and support community forests, which are an effective way to preserve the forest areas. Under this community forest project, the Community Forest Contest, which began in 2008, has been well responded from communities nationwide with the number of participants increasing every year. The project is expected to help absorb 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The second project is “Klayim Urban Forest for Educationâ€? that instil s among young people and community the commitment to forest conservation. Under this project, a small area is allocated in schools or temples as a plant learning center to support young people’s education in schools and communities. In Lao PDR, which is one of the Company’s major investment bases, the Company joined force with the Ministry of Education and Sports of Lao PDR in conducting an Education for Career Empowerment Project. Not only vocational trainings are provided to teachers, educational personel and vocational college students in Laos, but also continued education scholarships for vocational college-level students. The initiative well supported Lao PDR’s vision on educational development. The Company realizes the importance of social responsibility and has integrated the concept into the administration and management by making it the underlining concept for corporate values and culture.

Throughout the past 11 years, the Company has been strongly committed to building a strong foundation towards becoming a responsible corporate citizen. Social responsibility has been made the underlining concept for corporate values and culture that instil the sense of responsibility towards oneself and others respect and commitment to moral, ethics and virtue. All employees have strongly been developed the belief that it is their responsibility to be a part in helping and developing the society and expressing their responsibility by making contribution without any expectation in returns. This value is very important in driving the organization towards stable and sustainable growth. Respect and compliance with laws form a foundation of the Company’s social responsibility practice. It is equally important to deliver equitable treatment to all stakeholders, namely employees, shareholders, customers, partners and suppliers, communities, society and the environment. From using fossil fuel in power production, the Company has expanded into renewable energy in order to reduce dependence on fossil fuel which is gradually diminishing. At the same time, by shifting to renewable energy, carbon dioxide emission from the production process is lessened. Thanks to advanced production technology that is environmental friendly, the Company can better control and prevent environmental impact from the source. ISO 14001 standard has been implemented to help control the environment quality within the standard required and accepted by law. A campaign to lower treatment water and energy consumption have been introduced. This included recycling of water from the waste water treatment system and reuse and recycle of waste and garbage. Meanwhile, the Company takes parts in more community activities. Various community development and social activities have been initiated and implemented in order to strengthen community and society. Among them are activities that encourage communities to participate in natural resources and environment protection and conservation, instil awareness and inspire community’s participation in environment conservation and responsible energy consumption, as well as youth development.

2. Encouraging employees’ participation in corporate social responsibility activities. The Company supports all levels of employees to participate in brainstorming, initiating, SFDPNNFOEJOH BOE JNQMFNFOUJOH BDUJWJUJFT UIBU CFOFÇU DPNNVOJUZ and general public. Employees are also encouraged to participate in the Company’s and clubs’ social activities on volunteer basis in the “RATCH Employee Volunteersâ€? program. The Company allows employees to participate in social responsibility activities for three days without counting as annual leave. Employees participating in such activities wil be granted extra score in their annual performance appraisal as a SFXBSE GPS UIFJS DPOUSJCVUJPOT *O UIFSF XFSF BDUJWJUJFT under RATCH Employee Volunteer program, 15 of which were initiated by the Company and the rest by employees’ clubs. There were 121 employees out of total 140 participated in the activities, which counts for 86 per cent.

3FEVDJOH DBSCPO EJPYJEF FNJTTJPO GSPN QSPEVDUJPO QSPDFTT UP lessen the impact of global warming while preserving natural resources and the environment is also encouraged. The “Algae Cultivation for Global Warming Reduction Project in celebration of His .BKFTUZ UIF ,JOHkT th cycle birthday anniversary on 5 December 2011� was initiated and became an innovation in effective management of excess carbon dioxide from power production process in order to reduce its impact on the environment. The Company began a research and experiment in using carbon dioxide from its production process to grow spirulina algae. The research team, comprising experts and academics from Chiang Mai University, Kasetsart University and Mae Jo University found that spirulina algae grown in one rai plot of land can better absorb carbon dioxide than trees grown in the comparable size of area. The Company is studying further on appropriate conditions and environment that best enhance the algae growing and capability in carbon dioxide absorption. 4. Green belt expansion within the premise of Ratchaburi Power Plant: Ratchaburi Power Plant is a large electricity generating facility in Thailand and a major production hub of the Company. Throughout these years, the Ratchaburi Power Plant has continuously expanded the green area within its premise, which covers 2,051 rais. Different species of perennial trees were grown in its premise every year. Since the establishment until 2011, more UIBO USFFT XFSF BEEFE UP UIF SBJ QMPU PG MBOE SFQSFTFOUJOH QFS DFOU PG UIF UPUBM QPXFS QMBOU BSFB "QQSPYJNBUFMZ 52 per cent of the total trees grown in Ratchaburi Power Plant are teaks which have superior ability to absorb carbon dioxide. Other trees are mahogany and asoke trees (15 per cent and 10 per cent respectively). Not only these trees make the power plant greener, but they also purify air and absorb more carbon dioxide. More importantly, the area became a habitat for local animals, such as birds. 5. Energy saving campaign: In 2011, the Ratchaburi Power Plant had B UPUBM QPXFS QSPEVDUJPO DBQBDJUZ PG NFHBXBUU IPVS XIJDI JT QFS DFOU MPXFS UIBO UIBU PG 5IJT NFBOT tonnes of carbon dioxide were cut off. Under this energy saving project, the plant saved as much as 6,156 megawatt-hour, equivalent UP UPOOFT PG DBSCPO EJPYJEF EFDSFBTF SFQSFTFOUJOH 92.5 per cent less than 2010. It was because the 2 units of thermal power plants had installed Water Chil er Units for use in stead of the Air Compressor Cooling System, which consumed more electicity, during shutdown from November to December 2011. Throughout the seven-year campaign for energy saving in the Ratchaburi Power Plant, a total of 42,248 megawatt-hour of electricity have been saved while 22,205 tonnes of carbon dioxide were cut.

Love the Forest and the Community Project supports communities in preserving forest through community forest projects with an aim to maintain forest areas while allowing communities to utilize the community forest in a sustainable manner. Held in cooperation with the Royal Forestry Department, the project has been continued since 2008. Participating youth are aged between ZFBST BMM PG UIFN XFSF TFMFDUFE GSPN WBSJPVT SFHJPOT *O 2011, the Company held two camps, one in the north and the other one in the central region. There were 162 young people participating in these two camps. The goal of this project is to ensure a new generation of people who can effectively continue forest preservation activities and promote public mind. n $PNNVOJUZ GPSFTU MFBEFSTk OFUXPSL TFNJOBS UIJT BDUJWJUZ NBJOMZ promotes a knowledge sharing and a community forest management learning. The sharing wil in the long run promote more sustainable and more effective forest preservation. In addition, the activity helps strengthen the community forest network which plays an vital role in preserving the country’s forests. The Company organized two seminars in 2011 one in the northeast and the other in the south, with a total of 160 participants.

2. 84 Community Forests Reforest for the King project : Held in honor of H.M. the King on his 84th birthday on 5 December 2011 in cooperation with the Royal Forestry Department, the project aims to expand green areas in community forests. More trees were planted in 84 participating community forests all over the country. At the end of the projects, 840,000 new trees were planted, covering the area of 12,500 rai. The Company, in conjunction with, the Royal Forestry Department, created 84 plant learning centers in schools and temples nationwide. The centers wil be used to support education in schools while enhancing community’s awareness and consciousness in forest conservation and inspiring DPNNVOJUJFT UP WBMVF UIF CFOFÇUT PG GPSFTUT JO IVNBO MJGF Furthermore, green areas are added to communities. Schools and temples where these centers are located then prepared signage to provide information about the name, meaning and properties of each plant. Social Development

1. The Education for Career Empowerment in Lao PDR demonstrates the Company’s promise to being a responsible corporate citizen with a commitment to participating in economic and social development in Lao PDR which is one of the Company’s major business bases apart from Thailand. In 2011, the Company began the project aiming to provide and create educational opportunities for students and vocational education personnel in Lao PDR. In carrying out this project, a memorandum of understanding were signed by Lao PDR’s Education and Sports Ministry and the Company. Under such MoU, the Company provides workshop trainings in electricity, mechanical and techniques necessary to enhance teachers’ teaching skills and student’s readiness to enter the labor market. The project also effectively supports Lao PDR’s education development strategy. In the past year, the Company held a workshop training on electricity, mechanical BOE UFDIOJRVFT UP UFBDIFST BOE JOTUSVDUPST GSPN vocational colleges across Lao PDR. The training, held at Udon Thani Vocational College, enabled participating teachers and JOTUSVDUPST UP FèDJFOUMZ BOE FGGFDUJWFMZ USBOTGFS LOPXMFEHF GSPN this training further to their colleagues and to develop the curriculum and teaching aide.

The Company has clearly set the guidelines and process in identifying, evaluating and monitoring risk factors related to the Company’s operations. Risk management and control measures are addressed in order to maintain risks at acceptable levels. The Risk Management Committee, comprising executives from all disciplines and risk management unit, acts as the center in managing risks of the Company.
