PORTFOLIO

As an army officer’s daughter I travelled the length and breadth of our country, India. Experiences during these travels were a mix feeling of both exhilaration, on seeing awe inspiring manmade monuments and deeply depressing on coming across vast stretch of slums. This intensified in me to be a part of the process of learning and to bring about a change. Due to the frequent moves in the army environment I experienced a variety of cultures, traditions and way of life of the locals. This imbibed in me certain traits, such as being adventuress, experimental, and resourceful, which influence my design philosophy. I firmly believe that any design must be in consonance with the ever-evolving concepts, environment, community and individual aspirations, historical and emotional resonance of a place. My design philosophy is governed by simplicity, optimum utilisation of space through innovation and creativities and also creating an ambience soothing to mind and soul. The ultimate sense of achievement for an architect, is to witness his visualised ideas taking a definite physical shape to leave their footprint behind for generations to experience.

The Clients wanted a sustainable school within a constraint budget. The school’s intake was increasing with its popularity. Earlier due to constain of timing, the planning was haphazard and done by the client without much thought given to it. This lead to replanning of the blocks with a defined zones for Sports, Junior school, Parking and Hostle Block. The Junior School consists of 11 classrooms. whichwere planned keeping in mind the existing trees. It catered for classes from playschool to Class 2. Due to the placement of the classrooms a central court was created for majore functions like prayer and other activities. the secondary spaces wich were created between the classrooms, were for more specific activities eg. swings, amphitheatre etc. The playground was planned keeping in mind the concept that Learning happens while Playing. The Hostel Block for boys is designed for a capavity of 300 boys. The design revolved around the existing trees on site. Each floorplan required a common area for the students and a warden house. A separate staircase is provided on the exterior for the warden to enter his own house to mantain privacy. Jalis are provided to cool the air and allow cross ventilation.

First impression is the last impression, especially true in events like exhibitions. PCERF was desirous of having an imposing gate. The area given includes, entrance gate and surrounding landscape, beautification etc. The entrance gate is a transition between outside and inside spaces. It should be grand and have a remarkable sculptural element which gives directional foci towards inside space. The area given is mainly divided into three parts with undefined lines or partitions. 1. Main pathway or walking area. 2. Separate path for physically challenged people making it barrier free. 3. Structural and landscaped area. 4. Exhibiter’s area. The MAIN TWO THEMES incorporated in the design are : 1. Sustainable construction. The main materials like cardboard rolls and boxes are made from recycled paper. It is a biodegradable material. 2. Innovative and light weight construction technology.

PROGRAM: Endogenous Tourism

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

LOCATION: Almora, Uttrakhand, India

The project is a resort based on the concept of endogenous or “transformative” tourism means travel not for pleasure alone, but also for broadening the traveller’s horizon. It seeks to transform attitudes and mindsets, by promoting a mutual understanding between the local community and the visitors, where each appreciates and learns from the other. To utilize the existing buildings on site as a part of the project, hence restoring the buildings which can be restored and proposing new buildings adapted to the surroundings. To create spaces where the different crafts of Uttarakhand can be taught so as to preserve the art and craft from dying. To design a new concept of a restaurant where there is a community run kitchen.

YEAR:

2014

STATUS:

THESIS

Aim of the Project : a) To harness the existing traditional skills of the rural artisans, b) While placing special emphasis on the inclusion of women, youth and disadvantaged groups in income-generation activities. Objectives : To study different aspects of a village in Uttarakhand in the following manner and how they are inter-related : 1. Cultural Aspect. 2. Environmental Aspect. 3. Physical Aspect.

AGHAR | An Endogenous Tourism Intervention

GARWAL

KUMAON Stone Masonary Construction in Kumoun Region Of Uttarakhand : # It is a technique which uses stone, wood and mud to build the houses and is found in the southern part of the state of Uttarakhand i.e. the kumaon region.

# Such buildings are earthquake resistant because of its construction technique as it is located in Zone 5.

# Not much study or documentation has been done besides a few locals who have made an effort to collect information of this technique as it is a dying tradition.

# Investigations suggest that the region had evolved this distinct construction style as early as 1,000 years. Similarities in the architectural principles and structural details suggest their evolution under a single architectural school.

While visiting a place, one views a number of images which give the place a character. The context is defined by these repeating im

UNIT PLANNING:

A

A number of open spaces (AAGANS) are provided infront of the units, so that there is adequate activities and gathering spaces. Agricultural fields are located near the residential area for ease of access to the villagers.

MEMORY COVE

The entry to the reception has been made by excavating a passage at the summit of the hillock, The roof of the semicircular cutout before the reception has been covered by a pergola made of bamboo. Niches have been made on the curved wall for placing souvenirs for emotional bonding of the guests with the place.

RETAIN IT ALL

One comes across a number of retaining walls in a hilly region due to the requirement of cutting and filling. This movement is made interesting by creating niches and having the Aipans symbolic of the art of Kumoun painted along the walls.

PROGRAM: Gallery & Cafe

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

LOCATION: Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

The project was conceived as a multipurpose platform for every kind of artistic pursuit. it was important not to limit it to fine arts, but include theatre, dance and music. It is a flexible and open design, much like the function of the centre. The brief took the shape of a two-storey, cubeshaped building, from which emerges a central courtyard, The circulation spaces, forms a street-like open connector, leading to the entrance with a garden, amphitheatre, boutique and cafe. The sense of openness and unobstructed movement is enhanced by the seamlessness resulting from a subtracted material palette—rough red plaster for the exterior walls, plain white for the inside walls, granite flooring of different finishes and birch ply on doors and windows. It is a 360° building with its staircase acting acts as the sculptural element assending to the galleries on the first floor. The design has been inspired by the atmosphere of the European promenades, where creativity is not restricted to any specific location but is everywhere. The fluid space is created to direct the visitors into an amphitheatre surrounded by landscape.

PROGRAM: Residence

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

LOCATION: Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

The brief of the clients was simple. They wanted an earthy house for their family which had recently shifted from the US. They have a daughter and a son who wanted their own rooms with private spillout spaces. Requirements was for cosy rooms requiring minimum mantainance. This gave rise to designing a house with each room having dedicated green spaces. The rooms in the ground floor were provided at different levels for continuous visual connect. The house was divided into four distinct zones with the main axis terminating at a staircase with a large window which provides a sence of seamlessness. This prevents the house from being confinded to the wall, as windows at differnt levels are placed to have a continuous connection with the sky.

PROGRAM: Retrospective Exhibition

ABOUT THE PROJECT:

LOCATION: Shanghai, China

Shanghai’s Power Station of Art, Shanghai, had invited Sangath for its first ever Retrospective Exhibiton on the works of Balkrishna Doshi : Celebrating Habitat - The Real, the Virtual & the Imaginary. The exhibition showcased more than thirty pieces of his notable works, including personal and public housing, community projects, educational institution, urban planning and furniture design. Represented in multiple scales, these architecture projects aim to construct a philosophical retrospection of Doshi’s practice spanning 62 years, hoping to inspire young Chinese architects about the possibility of the application of modernist architecture in China, and at the same time, invite the audience to experience architecture as the celebration of habitat. The full-scale mock-ups helped to recreate the essence of the physical manifestation which helps to represent a new way connecting and generating new experiences.
