The thesis focuses on the regeneration of the study area, Trichy city, by enhancing tourism in its historic core area. The study area is 4.2 sq km and is located in the historic core of the city. The study aims to understand, analyze, and identify the economic, social, and environmental conditions and needs for urban regeneration in Tiruchirapalli.
The planning process aiming to revitalize and redevelop the city area works towards a complete overhaul. In search of alternative economic activities, cities have turned to tourism as a means of economic and physical regeneration. This is viewed in the tourism literature as a policy response to secure urban regeneration through the creation of employment opportunities, improvement of the physical environment, and enhancement of the city's image. This study focuses on the incorporation of tourism in the economic and physical aspects of urban regeneration.
