Prologue
The year 2022 has added another dimension to our Chamber’s build-up for its status and image through the quality of events and activities it has conducted. We have managed to attract wider and more diverse participation from across 21 Arab countries and Greece, which in total is translated into 1,011 businessmen.
In spite of the pandemic period of “closure” and online events, 2022 was the year our Chamber returned to our business-as-usual, organizing in-person business gatherings. We rebranded ourselves by introducing events focusing on certain regions of the Arab world, starting with the 5 North Mashreq countries, followed by another business gathering on Egypt, Greece’s historical and long-standing trade partner. Our events of the year culminated in the 11th ArabHellenic Economic Forum, which included three events under its banner: the “2nd Greece – GCC Countries Business Gathering”, the main Forum sessions, and the “4th Meet the Arab Ambassadors” Roundtable Discussion.
In the framework of the 86th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), which was convened on 10-18 September 2022 with the United Arab Emirates as the honored country, our Chamber was privileged to be selected as co-organizers of two events: ‘The High-Level Ministerial Roundtable Discussion’ organized in collaboration with the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Greece and the ‘1st Greece-UAE Business Gathering’ which was coordinated with the management of TIF-HELEXPO. Both events had a favorable impact on our Chamber’s reputation within the business community in Greece. Apart from the above, our Chamber participated in numerous other business and corporate events, details of which our readers may find on the inside pages of this brochure.
Despite the impact of the Russian-Ukrainian war on energy and the prices of consumer goods, Greece, has made an impressive comeback, recording a growth of 6,7% in its GDP, increased its trade balance internationally, and managed to become a favourable investment destination and business hub.
2022 has witnessed quite a dynamic build-up in the strategic relations between Greece and the Arab world in all aspects, recording a substantial increase in the flow of investment to Greece and new heights in the trade balance, totaling almost 19bn. euro for January –November 2022. This figure can easily be elevated based on the resources of the two sides, their geographical proximity, and above all, their growing cooperation.
The Arab-Hellenic Chamber remains steadily committed to its objective in enhancing GreekArab relations in all business domains. It is the support of our member-companies that makes it possible to deliver on our commitment. We are deeply grateful to them and all official entities that support and sponsor our events and activities.

Foreword

It is my pleasure to address the Arab-Hellenic Chamber’s audience in Greece and across the Arab world, because the way we see it, CCC’s history in Greece goes side-by-side with the Arab-Hellenic Chamber. Both organizations share few denominators, the most important one of which is our commitment to enhance the historically friendly relations between Arabs and our dear friends in Greece - a mandate, initiated by CCC’s founding fathers, Hasib Sabbagh and Said Khoury, who went the extra mile in promoting these relations and in attracting other Arab offshore companies to have Greece as their base.
CCC’s core corporate philosophy is to maintain long-term sustainability in countries of operations, to establish permanent offices there and work together with local authorities, companies and clients, by supplying innovative ways and solutions to challenges ahead. The proof of our perseverance is our long track record of projects in the Arab world and partnerships that promote the developments of these countries.
Looking at the current state of affairs, one can take comfort in the way that these relations have been elevated to new heights. Nevertheless, the untapped potential and abundance of opportunities within the Arab world and Greece have not yet been utilized in a way to give us all satisfaction. Greece, however, must be given credit for making impressive GDP growth of 6.7% for 2022. Adding to its success, Greece has a growing foreign investments record, and is continuously enhancing the favorable conditions for a newly created business hub for foreign companies which is rising in popularity.
It would be fair to say that, as an Arab company, with a branch office in Greece, we have modestly contributed to the Greek economy, mainly because we contribute to the employment of Greek manpower, while utilizing Greek services and infrastructure. The same is valid for all the Arab companies in Greece that have a decent share in the growth of the country’s economy.
CCC, along with other Arab companies operating in Greece, have been vocal supporters of the Arab-Hellenic Chamber’s events and activities since its establishment. The Chamber is enjoying a respected status and has successfully managed to gain recognition among Greek businesses here and across the Arab world. Our role is to safeguard the continuity of this important organization and to encourage it to stay in its course of commitment to opening dialogues between Greek and Arab businessmen and encouraging their partnerships. Our company has always enjoyed impeccable relations with the governments and the people of the countries we have operated in or taken a base in and in that respect, Greece has been no exception. We have merged into the fabric of Greek society and have managed to build strong bonds with the people of this beautiful and hospitable country.
It is my sincere wish that the year ahead will bring with it peace and prosperity for all of us!

Foreword
6
During 2022 global economies were tested by major disruptions and hostilities leading to a widespread energy crisis and global inflation. In this adverse environment Greece managed to outperform and level at the top of the list among 34 countries according to the Economist, that ranked 2022 economic performance, by compiling data on five economic and financial indicators.
To this end, the Hellenic Development Bank of Investments S.A. (HDBI, ex TANEO), being the Sovereign Fund-of-Funds of Greece, aims to support and further develop the investment ecosystem and act as the credible equity sovereign partner of Greece to facilitate successful investments, abiding with ESG criteria, to accelerate sustainable growth. HDBI currently manages € 2.1 billion to be invested in Venture Capital and Private Equity Fund schemes through its innovative open calls.
Nevertheless, HDBI’s role is not limited to providing investment financing. HDBI acts as the focal point of every stakeholder, supports the creation of a robust ecosystem of entrepreneurs, fund managers and private investors through various extrovert actions, and has established sound strategic alliances with major international counterparts. To name but a few, HDBI has established investment agreements with Mubadala and ADQ from Abu Dhabi, UAE (worth over € 4.4 billion) to facilitate investments in Greece, is in close cooperation with Mumtalakat of Bahrein and in discussions with the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia. On the European level, HDBI is in close collaboration with the European Investment Fund (EIF) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) for developing new programs and initiatives and participates in the cooperation protocol with peer European organizations from France (Bpifrance), Germany (KfW Capital), Finland (Tesi), and Denmark (Vækstfonden), aiming to create a panEuropean investment scheme to invest in high growth tech companies to scale up.
Finally, despite the negative forecasts for the European economies for 2023, Greece is one of the few countries to avoid being into recession and consequently – because of the efforts – the expected investment grade of the Greek economy will take place. The positive outlook is further supported by the fact that Greece has already secured and started receiving over €80 billion of European funds to be deployed in the economy over the next 5-7 years. The successful utilization and mobilization of these resources requires private capital. Therefore, private investments in key sectors and asset classes will be at the epicenter. This is a major challenge and a historic opportunity for Greece to scale up, as it is of paramount importance for further upgrading and ringfencing the resilience and sustainability of the economy and the society.

As a nonprofit organization, the Arab-Hellenic Chamber is appreciative of and indebted to its member companies for their contribution to all its events and activities. Without their support, it is very difficult for the Chamber to organize and go through with its events that unite Greek and Arab businesspersons under one roof to explore potential cooperations and partnerships. It is these companies’ and organizations’ sponsorships and auspices that give us the motivation, impetus and drive to continue on our path to provide quality events, and being of service to the Greek and Arab business communities.

About the Arab – Hellenic Chamber:
The Arab-Hellenic Chamber has embarked on the fifth decade of its business journey, with a clear visibility of its track record and achievements. The Chamber’s contribution to the increase of the trade balance between Greece and the Arab world is an indication of the growing importance of its role. The strategic dimension in its mandate to represent the Federations and Chambers of Commerce in all the Arab countries is a privilege which enables it to provide quality services and open constructive channels of communication between the two sides. Its events have been very successful in stimulating the verbal exchange between the Greek and the Arab businessmen, thus effectively influencing the increased flow of investments between them.
