Foreword by the Ambassador of the State of Qatar accredited to Greece

Foreword by the Ambassador of Greece accredited to the State of Qatar

H.E. Mr. Soltan Saad Al-Moraikhi

H.E. Mr. Ioannis Metaxas

WELCOME TO QATAR The relationship between the Arab and Greek world is a continuity of well over a thousand years marked with cooperation in various fields of science, knowledge, and translation. Qatari-Greek relations extend just over four decades and during this period the two countries have been sharing common ground and views on virtually all issues tackled at both regional and international levels. In recent years we have witnessed extensive exchanges of official visitors and business people between the two countries. One is pleased to note these

business contacts have resulted in the participation of well known Greek companies in key projects in Qatar and a growing number of high profile Greek expatriate communities working in various fields, a move we all support. So, we know our mutual cooperation is gathering momentum. However, the potential of both countries has not yet been fully realized and exploited. Both are blessed with an abundance of resources which complement each other and can therefore be easily integrated, thus enhancing and expanding our existing cooperation in various business fields. The Qatar investment strategy of diversity has been making positive strides both inside and outside of

the country. We have witnessed many success stories already: the creation of a world class name in Qatari Airways, the hosting of the Asian Games, and the Mondial 2020 are but a few examples. On the international front, our diversity into world class asset portfolios is an example of our healthy and forward looking investment approach.

Allow me to welcome the initiative of the Arab-Hellenic Chamber of Commerce and Industry to organize the visit of a business delegation to Doha, in close cooperation with the Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

I salute the initiative of the Arab Hellenic Chamber in organizing this delegation’s visit to Doha; it is an excellent step in the right direction. And permit me to wish the participants all the best in their endeavor and a pleasant stay in Qatar.

As you know Qatar is the richest country in the world in terms of per capita GDP. Its hydrocarbon based economic development is the engine that drives progress. Qatar is beginning to create a balance between an oil-based and a knowledge-based economy. It is diversifying its economy and is fostering a stable and sustainable business environment. At the same time competition is increasing while more investments are attracted to stimulate growth. It is of particular importance for the Embassy of Greece in Doha to welcome Greek companies that wish to do business in Qatar. We work closely with the Qatari government to support and match Greek

companies with Qatari projects and to improve the flow of information on Greek production capabilities and innovation. We are working with potential Qatari investors to highlight opportunities and to manage the risks of Qatari inward investment into Greece. We are using regular dialogue with Qatari stakeholders to highlight the importance and the mutual benefits of trade and investment. Qatar’s financial and economic stability is characterized by low inflation rates, a stable financial policy and a secure and efficient financial system. With the diversification of Qatar’s economy, Greek companies do have a lot to offer in an increasing number of sectors: • The construction sector is a leader, with a host of state-of-the-art infrastructure projects that include roads, highways and drainage networks, public and private buildings as well as health and educational facilities. Qatar’s ongoing projects are

valued at more than US$ 250 billion. A staggering US$ 100 billion is planned to be spent on development projects in anticipation of the FIFA World Cup in 2022. • The oil and gas sector that generates advanced technological innovations and various business opportunities. • The food sector, where Qatar imports 92% of all its food. Qatar has a programme to increase water and agricultural capacity to reduce reliance on imports. This will result in opportunities in desalination, agri-tech, renewable energy, food storage and hydroponics. We believe that there exist ample opportunities for forging an even closer synergy between Greek and Qatari businesses and reinforcing the fruitful cooperation that already exists between our business communities. I wish to all participants of the Greek business delegation a lot of success in their contacts.

Sailing/Yachting in Greece Sailing/Yachting in Greece can be a wonderful and fulfilling experience. In this small Mediterranean country, one can find the ideal weather conditions, the best seawaters and some fantastic marinas to tie up. Apart form the apparent beauty of the crystal clear blue Aegean and Ionian Seas, the visitor who wants to charter a yacht will find useful information on the Greek waters from various publishers as well as the Greek Navy. As for the boats themselves, one can choose between sailing yachts, bareboats, motor-

sailers and motor yachts. The connection among the islands is easy and there are around 6,000 berths for yachts while most ports have concrete jetties for small boats. Last but not least, the Marine Park in the Northern Sporades and another one in Zakynthos are not to be missed. Both are of unique interest because of their significance to the marine biology and vegetation and attract tourists from all over the world annually.

Northern Sporades await!

Island hopping is made easy by the many ferry boats connecting destinations as well as many new marinas catering to the sailing crowd. Islands like Leukas in the Ionian Sea have large sailboat eets for hire by the week. Athens is probably the best place to hire a yacht, either to crew by yourself or with a crew already on board. In this way, island hopping can be tailored to the individual traveler’s whim.

Everyone Knows Something About Greek Islands

Food knows about the Greek nightlife. Not even the recesThere are no hidden surprises here. Everyone sion can discourage Greeks who party along with visitors all year round. No small town anywhere would be complete without a club or two on the road just out of town so the noise does not bother the residents. Some islands like Mykonos and Ios have made clubbing a specialty. Athens and Thessaloniki are lively and welcoming all year long with this dierence: most of the clubs move to the sea side for the summer months, a move that suits just about everyone. The big name bands and singers move with the crowd. Most large hotels attempt to cater to the party crowd, but the majority of visitors seem to prefer to mingle with the locals and soak in the atmosphere.

Food

Street Food, stall food, snack food (mezedes), tavern food, restaurant food, and gourmet food: Greeks just like food and it is always good advice to note where the locals eat. www.amforeas.gr | email: maragos@amforeas.gr Agora Art Gallery - Amforeas Workshop On the new highway, Mycenae-Nafplion, just 3.5 km from the famous archaeological site of Mycenae, Greece, we have built the multi-functional venue Agora where visitors can be guided through ancient Greek art. Agora successfully combines the art gallery with the museum. From the Cycladic and Minoan civilazation until the Classical Greek period, it is rich in handcraſted statues, figurines and vases, exact replicas of the ancient Greek ones. The collection is completed with gold and silver jewelry with ancient Greek as well as more modern patterns that impress with their craſtsmanship. In the Amforeas Workshop, a modern and fully equipped pottery, art is created with exact replicas of famous masterpieces of antiquity, such as the Venus de Milo, the Jockey of Artemision and the Discus Thrower of Myron as well as unique vases, fi gurines and other archaic items of the ancient Greek heritage. The long family experience, which already spans to two generations, has led to the Art of Decoration. We professionally decorate buildings of all types, such as banks, museums, educational organizations as well as mansions, villas and houses, giving the ideal propositions and suggestions for lovers of the ancient civilization of Greece and the passionate collectors who want the best of the best. Visit the Agora Art Gallery and “travel” in the days of Ancient Greece, the cradle of civilization, which giſted hundreds of years ago, the light around the world. Managing Director Stelios Maragos
