Munich is a city of well 1.4 million people, a commercial hub, the seat of two excellent universities, with orchestras that are in the top tier of the world, with from all over the world. Yet, for all that, Munich is an easy-going city, a virtue it has retained while evolving from being the small capital of the Bavarian kingdom to laid back and with a well-developed sense of style.

return in time for a heady mix of nightlife? Where else can you be sure that on a sunny day in the dead of chilly winter sidewalk cafĂŠs will hasten to put out tables and chairs complete with blankets and heaters? Where else can you walk out of a museum and watch people in neoprene surf on a river elegant people heading to the opera? A spirit of tolerance and cooperation infuses this city. It is cool and trendy yet wholeheartedly embraces the colorful local lore and rituals.

The Munich Beer Garden -

How it all began Drinking a cool refreshing beer underneath shady trees – what a pleasure! Today beer gardens are known and loved in countries across the world. However, the whole tradition really began right here, in Munich.

Bavarian beer brewing ordinance. According to this ordinance beer could not be brewed in the months from May to September. The reason for this was simple: the beer fermentation process generated so much heat that the there was a city. But who wanted to relinquish the pleasure of drinking a nice cool beer on sunny days?

36

In order to serve the cool beer to their customers more quickly the breweries set up tables and chairs outside of their cellars - and the beer garden was born. Munich citizens were delighted with these new destinations. The owners of the inns and pubs in Munich were less happy, fearing that the competition of the new-fangled beer gardens might mean that their businesses would suffer. In order to keep the peace in his country, the Bavarian King Ludwig II. decreed that beer gardens were only allowed to sell beer but not food. And this tradition has survived to this very day, with customers allowed to bring their own food and sandwiches into the beer gardens. And what do the citizens of Munich say to this: “It’s Brotzeit!

Special Highlights of the oktoberfest The most famous event in Munich: the oktoberfest takes place from September 21 until october 6 in 2013.

The festive setting for the opening of the Oktoberfest is the entry of the festival hosts and breweries. During the ceremonial opening of the fest, the families of the festival hosts in bands of the festival tents, the waitresses on decorated carriages and the Munich breweries enter the festival- grounds.

42

A bigband open-air concert of all Oktoberfest bands with some 300 musicians takes place on the second Sunday of the festival. For the grand Sunday some 60 marksmen salute their farewell accompanied by the band of the marksmen’ tent.

The procession of folklore and marksmen groups is seen on the of the Oktoberfest. Highlights are historical uniforms, marksmen, folklore groups, local bands, bandsmen and thoroughbred horses.

Festive Beer and Delicacies In the 14 festive halls with a total seating capacity for more than 104.000 guests the special Oktoberfest beer brewed by the six major Munich breweries with an original wort of about 13 percent is served. The beer is best accompanied by Bavarian delicacies such as radishes, Obatzda (specially garnished cream cheese), sausages and roast chicken Another Wiesn specialty is the ox roasted on a spit at the Ochsenbraterei. A total of about 128 mediumsize and small caterers invite their guests to enjoy and party.

– a celebration of the dirndl

A

t the end of each September the largest people’s fair in the world – the oktoberfest – takes place here in Munich. And when the oktoberfest begins the women of Munich unpack their dirndl dresses. However, these dirndls aren’t just any old gowns. Instead, they are gorgeous creations designed by well-known fashion houses.

Originally the dirndl dress was plain working attire, worn by female servants and maids. At around 1880, however, the dirndl also became popular amongst the young women from Munich’s upper classes. The reason was simple: the new dresses were colourful, cheeky and ever so slightly sexy, especially when compared to the traditional, elaborate and very expensive female national costume of the late 19th century. Because the new summer dresses were frequently worn by young fashion-aware women (or Dirnen, an archaic German expression for girls), the new fashion became known as “Dirndl”, a dress worn by a Dirne. Dirndl dresses were traditionally worn to church and when visiting fairs and festivals. And at modern-day Oktoberfest, Dirndl dresses have reached an iconic fashion status. Today dirndls are available in many different styles, as maxi or mini dresses, plain or patterned, made from colourful cotton fabrics or sumptuous brocades and silks. Over the last few years haute couture dirndl dresses, created by famous fashion designers, have appeared on German and international runways. These exclusive dirndls are popular with women across the world, sought after by customers as far away as Tokyo or New York. However, every single dirndl still follows the classic pattern of the traditional Bavarian national dress: a wide, swinging pleated skirt which is sown to the upper part of the dress. This upper part is a tightly laced bodice or corsage which creates a beautiful décolleté. Underneath the bodice a dirndl blouse is worn which is elaborately decorated with frills, feathers or lace. A special part of the dirndl dress is the colourful embroidered apron which is tied with a wide bow. But careful! The apron is always worn a few centimeters above the hem of the skirt. The classic accessories worn with a dirndl – elegant bracelets, necklaces or expensive come and social standing.
