is proud to announce our sponsorship of the 2016 Arabian Western Pleasure Association $100,000 Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity for four-year-olds. Also, we have recently been joined by the C. Jarvis Insurance Agency, Inc., as the sponsor of the 2016 $50,000 Half-Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity for four-year-olds. The response and enthusiasm for this program has been staggering. Modeled after the Arabian English Pleasure Association futurity, the board of the AWPA and others who worked hard to develop it should be commended for recognizing and addressing the need for significant prize money for young Arabian and Half-Arabian western pleasure horses. There is no doubt that it has already increased enthusiasm and helped to stimulate breeding. Sixty-nine stallions have been nominated and their offspring will compete in the inaugural classes held at this year’s U.S. National Championship Show in October. We are grateful that these wonderful stallions have chosen to grace our pages this month.

AW PA by Gary Dearth
Western Pleasure Futurity Program In 2014 a group of committed
As AWPA Board member Josh Quintus said, “I knew Arabian owners, breeders, and we would have to do it for trainers came together when ourselves.” AWPA President Michele Reser added, they saw the need for significant “We are in a time in our prize money to stimulate the industry when we have to do breeding of Arabian and Half- something to get excitement back in breeding. It’s sad that Arabian western pleasure horses. we are breeding fewer than 3,000 foals a year. It’s a scary time. Every year you go to the AHA Convention and it’s reported that registration numbers keep falling. I wanted to change that.” In February 2013, she asked Josh Quintus if he thought a western pleasure futurity program modeled after the AEPA $100,000 Arabian Saddle Seat Futurity, would fly. While he gave her a definite yes, the idea was allowed to percolate for nearly a year. Finally a board of directors was chosen and the Arabian Western Pleasure Association was formed. On a conference call in December of 2014, the basics of the new program were laid out. By the first formal board meeting held at the 2015 Scottsdale Show, most of the details were agreed upon. Now AWPA board members, Michele and Josh could not have imagined that in its first year the new program would be such a resounding success. With 69 stallions already nominated the first year, the excitement created has been nothing short of remarkable. “The biggest thing we wanted to do is promote the Arabian breed, promote our sport, and get people excited about breeding again,” said Josh. “With the continuing decline in registrations, we wanted to give people a reason to produce foals and be excited about breeding. The next big decision was what we could offer the stallion owners that would keep them donating and supporting the program year after year. In addition to donating a breeding for the service auction, stallion owners pay a thousand dollars which creates the fund we will use to pay bonuses to the foals conceived using the auction breedings. We expect this to amount to close to $35,000, with the first payouts to come in 2021. The stallion owner will also be able to nominate an auction foal, which is a significant benefit to them for their participation in the program.” The bonus prize money for auction foals also creates a tremendous incentive to purchase the auction breedings, because the resulting foals have greater value based on their increased earning potential. The first classes for the AWPA futurity will be held at the 2016 U.S. Nationals for four-year-old purebred and Half-Arabians. All class eliminations will be held as regular junior horse classes. Like all junior horse classes, quality will be the number one criteria for judging. But the AWPA board has incorporated several innovations for their classes. Rather than using the U.S. National western pleasure panel, a five judge MOS system will be utilized. The five judges will be randomly drawn from the U.S. National Show 16 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ AWPA 2016
judging panels. Fourteen rather than the typical sixteen horses will advance to the final. After the horses line up following the rail work in the final, they will be stripped and their quality judged. After the judging is complete, the horses will leave the arena, be tacked up again and return to the arena starting with the tenth place horse and ending with the champion. And finally, five percent of the total prize money paid to the winners will go to the owner of the winner’s sire. The Arabian Western Pleasure Association has created a superb program that not only has taken off more quickly than its organizers imagined, it has been thoughtfully structured by them to continue to grow and thrive over time.
“The biggest thing we wanted to do is promote the Arabian breed, promote our sport, and get people excited about breeding again.” — Josh Quintus

Michele Reser
Dave Daugherty Amy Peterson
Board of Directors President, Michele Reser As far back as I can remember Arabian horses have been a part of my life. I began riding at the age of six and showing class A and regional shows at eight. I was hooked. But life happens, and I left the horse world for several years until my childhood friend and competitor, Joe Reser, became my husband. Suddenly, horses were back to the center of my life as what was once Joe’s hobby became his career. Together, we are a part of Setting Sun Stables, LLC, where we train, breed, and raise Arabian and HalfArabian horses. Most importantly, I am the mother of two boys, Cole and Grant, who have also caught the horse bug. Arabian horses are both my passion and my business. As such, it is important to me that I not just participate in, but actively help to shape the future of our industry. As a member of the OHAHA board, I serve as a delegate for the AHA convention. I hope the AWPA can serve as a vehicle to promote and facilitate participation in our breed.
Vice-President, Dave Daugherty I am a 30-year veteran of the Columbus, Ohio, Police Department and have been married to my lovely wife Angela for the past 22 years, which makes me the luckiest guy in the world. In my spare time I am currently a member of the U.S. and Canadian National show commissions, a past Region 14 Director, and the President of the Ohio Half-Arabian Horse Association. I believe the Arabian Western Pleasure Association may just be the most important thing I have been involved in for the Arabian horse community. My hope is to encourage people to get involved in breeding, showing, and enjoying quality Arabian and Half-Arabian western pleasure horses again. “If it can’t be done on the back of an Arabian or Half-Arabian horse, then it’s not worth doing in the first place.”
Treasurer, Amy Peterson I am very enthusiastic about the Arabian Western Pleasure Association! I have been showing Arabian horses since I could walk. I have shown western, hunter, saddle seat, and even halter over the years but my passion is western pleasure. I am very fortunate to share my interest in western pleasure with my husband Troy, who trains at Tamar Arabians. When I am not using my vacation time to attend horse shows, I am a consulting manager at McGladrey LP, focusing on the financial services industry. I have worked in the risk management field for financial institutions for the past 17 years.
30 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ AWPA 2016
I started riding before I can remember, and have been involved with Arabians since my parents purchased my first horse, a Half-Arabian, when I was eight years old. There’s nothing about an Arabian horse I don’t love; they are beautiful, intelligent, at times challenging, and most of all some of the best friends I have ever had. I was born and raised in Summerville, South Carolina, and still live there and work for my family business, Summit Rubber Company, Inc., that was founded by my grandfather over 30 years ago. I enjoy riding all types of disciplines, but there’s nothing like a good western horse to me. That trust and communication is harder than it looks, and I love the challenge of it. It’s an honor to be part of the AWPA, and I am beyond excited for the future of this association and what I feel it brings to the table. There are no better people and animals on earth than in the Arabian breed. I look forward to working with owners, breeders, trainers, and amateurs as we embark on this new adventure.
Board Member, Rob Bick I have been training Arabian horses professionally for 35 years. My wife Caralyn Schroter and I own and operate RBC Show Horses in Smithfield, North Carolina. I have been a member of the Arabian Horse Association since 1974, and a clinician for 35 years for numerous Arabian horse clubs around the United States and Canada. I currently serve on the APAHA Board of Directors and the Arabian Horse Celebration Show board of directors. I am a North Carolina representative for the Region 12 Arabian Horse Association. I also attend the Arabian Horse Association convention each year as a delegate for the North Carolina Arabian Horse Association. I feel that I have had great opportunities to provide knowledge and guidance to many major breeders and clients who have bred or own some outstanding western pleasure horses. Among a few of my personal favorite western pleasure horses that I have had the honor of training are: May Dancer V, PA Kid Khan, and Possesion PGA.
Board Member, Josh Quintus Josh Quintus is a respected judge and was the 1997 Western Horseman of the Year. He has achieved national honors in halter, western, English, driving, hunter pleasure and hunter over fences. Josh has a foundation of over 18 years’ experience in the Arabian horse industry. He is competitive and knowledgeable with an established and respected reputation.

Dana Romijn
Board Member, Dana Romijn Dana developed an early passion for Arabian horses that also fueled her career choice as a veterinary technician. Dana resides in Alberta, Canada, where she conditions and prepares her own Arabian horses to compete in both hunter and western in the amateur divisions to the national level. In recent years, Dana moved horses to the U.S. for training, showing, and essentially to expand her knowledge and involvement in the Arabian horse industry. Dana is an integral part of the breeding program for Salisbury Farms, in her hometown of Sherwood Park, and she takes pride in her accomplishments with many of the horses bred on the farm. Dana is a member of the board for the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry and is actively involved in the Arabian industry in Canada. Dana’s passion for Arabian horses is evident in her dedication to the breed and the Arabian horse industry.
Board Member, Barb Sink I live in Waukee, Iowa, and have had Arabians and Half-Arabians for 30 years. Though a beautiful moving western horse is my absolute favorite thing, we have also haltered some of these babies we have bred — an amazing goal to have, to do it both for oneself and the breed.
Board Member, Chelsea Wesson I am looking forward to being involved in such a forward-thinking organization for the Arabian horse! I have a degree in English education and speech, and I am currently working in the technology industry. I have been involved with a local Arabian horse club for over fifteen years and have helped the club develop its social media and e-blast programs. I am also on two local show committees. The Arabian horse is my passion, and I hope this organization will help even more people appreciate this great breed.

“I first saw Kharismatic PGA
“He looked like a big wafer. He had this big long neck, (*Khadraj NA x Aphrodite FA) in with no weight on his one of the Petroglyph Arabians’ body. Loping around the paddock he was all neck. pastures as a three-year-old,” He was out with a couple said trainer Brett Becker. other colts, but all I could see was him.” Kharismatic PGA is an interesting combination of his sire *Khadraj NA (Ponamarov x Khatreena NA) and Fame VF (Bey Shah x Raffoleta-Rose) through his dam Aphrodite FA. “The Khadraj horses have been very good to me,” says Brett. “I have had some great multi-national champion get of his like Khontroversy PGA, Khash PGA, WR Soul Man, Kheanne and of course Kharismatic.” Prior to Kharismatic PGA, Brett says he’d never seen an Arabian so big. “He is a massive sixteen-plus hand horse,” says Brett. “He has a big chest, big feet, big neck, big butt, big eyes. Everything about ‘Mat’ is big. Yet he has a kind of quiet elegance about him. You don’t feel like you are riding a big old tank because he is so soft.” Brett Becker originally purchased Kharismatic PGA as a three-year-old for Nicci Waldschmidt. As a six-year-old, the Pitassi family, Doug, Karen, Brooke, and Nicole, entered his life. He was not for sale, but Brett said that Karen Pitassi called every week trying to buy him. Finally after a number of offers, the Waldschmidts relented and Kharismatic had a new owner. That’s when his show career really took off. He won his first National Championship when he and Nicole Pitassi were named 2008 Canadian National Champion in Western Pleasure AAOTR 18-39. Over five years he won a total of seven National Championships with four of them being unanimous wins. “To be unanimous is neat — it’s a little more special,” said owner Karen Pitassi. Kharismatic’s show record includes 2010 Canadian National Champion Western Pleasure with Brett Becker, and U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure AAOTR 18-35 three times in a row with Nicole Pitassi (2009, 2010 and 2011). He has also won three Canadian National Championships in Western Pleasure AAOTR 18-39 with Brooke. His last National win was 2013 U.S. National Reserve Champion Western Pleasure with Brett Becker. An extensive show record is not the only reason Kharismatic is special. “I’ve had a lot of stallions and he is different,” says Karen. “Kids can sit on him bareback in the stall. When he is around other horses you would never know he is a stallion. He didn’t change a bit after we started breeding him. Physically he is different. His gaits are amazing. He is the smoothest horse I have ever ridden. I know I’m prejudiced. His is a completely different look and I love it. He’s big and bold with beautiful movement.” Now in the early stages of his breeding career, Kharismatic’s first foal, from a foal crop of one, was U.S. Top Ten in the Western Futurity at last year’s U.S. Nationals. 46 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ AWPA 2016
“Everything about ‘Mat’ is big. Yet he has a kind of quiet elegance about him.” — Brett Becker
“Before we started breeding him Brett said, ‘He’s beautiful but we don’t know if he’ll pass it on,’” says Karen. “It turns out that we are very happy with his foals. We have owned a lot of horses and this one stands above the rest,” continues Karen. “It’s his demeanor. He’s just a lovey guy. We’ve been blessed that we are the lucky owners.” Brett Becker concludes, “I know he’s a great horse because I live with him.” There probably isn’t a greater endorsement than that.

AW PA BONUS PAYBACK PROGRAM 50% of the $1,000 Stallion Nomination Used for Bonus Payback- Adjusted Annually Auction Foals are eligible for Bonus Payback. Auction foals are the result of the breedings purchased in the annual AWPA Stallion Service Auction. Also, every stallion owner may designate an in utero auction foal for every breeding that they donated to the stallion service auction. ★ 69 stallions nominated in 2016 creates $34,500 available in 2021 ★ 65% for Arabian payback ($22,425) ★ 35% for Half-Arabian payback ($12,075) All auction foals that make the semi-final/final share equally in the bonus payback. Fourteen horses, not the usual sixteen, will qualify from the eliminations to show in the semi-final/final.
Innovations and Rules and Regulations JUDGING PANEL The judging panel for the U.S. National Four Year Old Western Pleasure Futurity classes will be randomly selected from the English, Western, and Hunter Pleasure/Show Hack judging panels. In 2016 the judging panel selected is: Jeremy Harper (call), Kelly Elm, Christine Johnson and Chris Culbreth.
STRIPPING The semi-final/final will be run as a “regular” junior western pleasure class. Once the horses are in the lineup an attendant will be allowed in the ring to assist in stripping the horse of tack and removing the tack from the ring. The horses will be assessed for quality by the judges. After the horses are excused from the arena they can replace the tack. The horses will be brought back into the arena from tenth place to finally Champion.
AWPA RULES AND REGULATIONS ENTERING YOUR STALLION ★ An owner of a stallion can nominate their stallion into the AWPA for a fee of $1,000. ★ One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA stallion auction. Stallion owner can choose to donate two (2) breedings for their $1,000 nomination fee. Stallion owner can choose to have one breeding in the purebred auction and one breeding in the Half-Arabian auction. ★ Stallion owner must complete the stallion nomination form and provide all additional documentation before the deadline of December 31 of the year preceding the stallion auction. (December 31 2015) ★ Payment of the $1,000 nomination fee is due before the deadline of December 31 of the year preceding the stallion auction. (December 31 2015) ★ The AWPA will advise the stallion owner when all payment and contracts have been honored by the purchaser so that breeding service can commence. ★ The stallion owner will receive one mare nomination into the AWPA. This mare nomination can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the stallion owner to anyone the stallion owner chooses and for any fee the stallion owner chooses. The mare nomination fee of $100 will apply to all mares. ★ The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000. In this case, the stallion owner would receive two mare nominations. ★ One nomination for the $1,000 enrollment and one nomination for the purchase of the breeding. The mare nomination fee of $100 will apply.
62 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ AWPA 2016
MARE NOMINATION ★ In order to participate in the AWPA purebred and Half-Arabian classes, you must nominate the mare in-utero. ★ Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year. December 31 2016. ★ Any mare that has been bred to a stallion that is entered in the AWPA auction, can be nominated. It does not have to be a breeding that has been purchased in the auction. The stallion must be nominated into the AWPA auction the year that you nominate your mare. For example, all mares bred to an AWPA stallion that is in the 2016 auction, can be nominated in-utero before the end of December in the breeding year of 2016. ★ Mare nomination fee is $100 for all mares bred to AWPA stallions. The nomination fee is due by December 31 of the breeding/auction year. December 31 2016.
★ Purchaser must complete Purchaser form when advised by the AWPA that they are the winning bidder. ★ Payment is due when the AWPA advises the purchaser that they are the winning bidder. ★ Auction will be an online format through The Arabian Horse Times. Auction will commence January 1 and will close on February 10. First auction will be January 1, 2016 – February 10, 2016.
OFFSPRING NOMINATION
The AWPA futurities will be paid out as follows:
★ Until the first foal crop of the 2016 auction is ready to compete (that being 2021), all offspring of an AWPA nominated stallion are eligible to compete in the AWPA futurity class. ★ The fee to compete is strictly a class entry fee of $700 as well as all other related USN fees.
CLASS GUIDELINES ★ First classes for the AWPA Purebred and Half-Arabian futurities will be at the USN show in 2016. ★ The classes are open to four year old purebred and Half-Arabian horses. ★ A 5 judge MOS system will be used. Judges will be drawn randomly from the USN judging panels. ★ Quality is the number one criteria for judging. ★ Class eliminations will be run as a ‘regular’ junior horse class. Fourteen (14) horses total will advance to the final. ★ The final will be run as a ‘regular’ junior horse class. Once lined up, one (1) attendant per horse is allowed in the ring to assist in stripping the horse of tack and to remove tack from the ring. Horses will be assessed for quality by the judges. ★ Horses will then be asked to leave the arena and can replace tack. Horses will be called back to the arena from 10 th place up to Champion.
