by Kara Larson Trotting down the tunnel into legendary Freedom Hall is something the Arabian show horse is built to do. Words like “electric” and “exciting” are associated with showing in this arena, and for the second year, the Arabian Horse Celebration (AHC) Event has brought to life this dream of showing in Freedom Hall. Built on an idea conceptualized by Bob Battaglia and Lollie Ames, the 2013 AHC brought competitive, nationalsbound horses along with members of Louisville’s horse crazy population to the event. The AHC brings together owners, breeders, trainers, amateurs, professionals, and lovers of the Arabian horse, with one common goal in mind. Featuring an extensive program of seminars and demonstrations, which are interesting, educational, and promotional for the breed, the Arabian Horse Celebration did what its name set out to do—celebrate our Arabian horse. In this celebration and promotion of the Arabian, Bob Battaglia shares what made the second Arabian Horse Celebration Event such a unique one. “This year, it was an absolute pleasure to see the quality of the horses and commercial exhibits along with the people truly enjoying the event.” Bob continues, “I think the most important
aspect of the horse show and the entire event, is that everybody enjoyed each other’s horses. Regardless of the owner or who won, people were applauding the quality of the Arabian horse. The show is about the camaraderie, the enjoyment, the education, and the fact that everybody is there to embrace the Arabian horse and its quality.” Before the show or seminars started up on Wednesday, the AHC began with the Starting Gate Party, held at historic Churchill Downs on Tuesday night. The partygoers were adorned in “derby attire” and celebrated the beginning of the show with an auction by which all proceeds went to the charity, Home of the Innocents, a Louisville based program that focuses on pediatric services, offering compassionate, expert care for children who are medically fragile, children with Autism, children in foster care, and children with exceptional health needs. For Kimberly Jarvis and Bob Battaglia, this program touched their hearts immeasurably, making the evening that much more special an affair. Her favorite part of the evening, Kimberly shares, “It was so gratifying presenting our charity, Home of the Innocents, with a $10,000 check. It is significant that the Arabian Horse Celebration is more than self-serving. We truly made Volume 44, No. 5 | 163AAA

an impact on children’s lives.” She continues, “I believe the executive and board of directors did a superb job in choosing Home of the Innocents. I have visited many facilities of this kind, but never once experienced a place so immaculate, so loving, and truly a safe haven for the children while covering so many bases.” The evening was filled with the camaraderie and joy of catching up with horse friends, enjoying a wonderful meal, and participating in the main event—the auction; officiated by the charming Stuart Vesty. Afterwards, many enjoyed the view of a pristine Churchill Downs and music outside the dining room. Jarvis shares, “It was a lovely affair. Who can deny the ambience of Churchill Downs? You can almost hear the thunder of the horses passing the finish line, the roar of the crowd, and “Our Old Kentucky Home” singing in our hearts.” Classes commenced the following morning, as did the seminars, Stallion Row, private treaty sales presentations, youth workshops, and community outreach efforts. Lollie Ames shares, “It’s really special to see it shape into the show it is. We wanted to have a show where we Volume 44, No. 5 | 165AAA

could educate people, present our stallions, have our seminars, and go back to the fairs that we used to have years ago.” And this mentality of opening up a show to all, bringing the community in, and facilitating the atmosphere of an accommodating event—that’s what the Arabian Horse Celebration is about. As a member of the Board of Directors, Frank Hennessey shares the realization of these promises in the second AHC. “I think the Celebration is a fantastic show—its second year was incredible and I was very impressed, particularly with the English pleasure horses. It was also a fun show—we enjoyed ourselves tremendously and I’m looking forward to next year!” Frank goes on to say, “One of the things that makes the show so attractive is the educational seminars featuring some excellent speakers and good topics. In particular, I thought Gene LaCroix and Greg Knowles were great— fun and educational at the same time!” Stallion Row, one of the promotional aspects of the show held daily presentations in the barn area of the show grounds. A prime opportunity for everyone to see amazing and inf luential Arabian stallions up close, Stallion Row brings the top stallions to the people and
opens up a great deal of breeding potential for all. On the event, David Boggs offers, “I think it is an excellent way to give great exposure to the stallions. Breeding season is coming up and you’re able to present them to people who have never seen them before. There were good crowds, and hats off to the committee, because it’s a nice addition to have. It’s a great spot and Walter Mishek did a great job announcing—very well done all around.” The Arabian Horse Celebration Event offers both spectators and exhibitors a complete package. And as someone profoundly involved with the Arabian horse and this show in particular, Kimberly Jarvis espouses the value of this show. “The goal of the Arabian Horse Celebration is to educate, promote, and showcase the Arabian breed to exhibitors, spectators, newcomers, and experienced horsemen. It is simple, all you have to do is attend to see and realize all that the Arabian Horse Celebration has to offer and has accomplished in the past two years—mission accomplished!” One of the most meaningful and special awards of the show was in the Stallion Championship, as the Don Morse Memorial Trophy was awarded to the winner. David Boggs, handling Baahir El Marwan for owner Al Saqran Stud of Dubai, took home this honor. “It was more than wonderful, because Don Morse was my best friend, but it was also a bittersweet and very sad moment. In my heart, I wanted to win it more than anything, and then I was kind of afraid to at the same time. But it was great—it was a beautiful trophy with a very special meaning,” Boggs shares. Janey Morse, wife of Don, offers her take on the special tribute to Don. “It means a lot to me—it is in honor of my husband, who loved the Arabian horse and whose dream it was to have an amazing stallion, and realized that dream in Vitorio TO. It was our privilege to sponsor this class with a perpetual, traveling trophy in remembrance of Don.” Another major show ring award generously sponsored by Lee Anne Flynn, the SF Aftershoc Saddle Seat
Equitation Scholarship, was a new addition to the show this year, serving as an incentive for the youth Saddleseat riders of the show. With special awards like this, a futurity division, more stallions, and a potential earlier date in the works for next year, the Arabian Horse Celebration is on the move. The Arabian Horse Celebration boasts quality horses, a fantastic atmosphere, open communication, big goals, and a promising future. All the AHC team asks of you is that you give it a chance. With a big job ahead of them, they know their goals are worthwhile. With the exhibitor and the Arabian horse in mind, the Celebration is an opportunity to promote the Arabian while offering a show that people, both inside and outside the Arabian industry, enjoy attending. Simply stated, the object is not to be in place of any other show, but to enhance the Arabian breed—to promote and educate the public on our exceptional horse. Volume 44, No. 5 | 169AAA
