Bialka Junior Spring Show JUNE 7-8, 2015 POLAND

by Jeff Wallace with Theresa Cardamone Founded in 1981 and the youngest of the three active Polish State Studs, Stallion Depot Bialka is an idyllic setting to raise horses. Brilliant green fields and charming barns built from local limestone enhance the pastoral feel. Each year, the finest young horses from throughout Poland come to Bialka for the annual Spring Show. Local dancers in Polish folk costumes create a joyous, celebratory atmosphere that is enhanced by other special touches. Everyone enjoys the charming, welldressed local girls who take delight in displaying a solid row of 20’s in unison, and the show arena is sheltered from the sun by a magnificent tree that provides a shady spot for horses waiting for their turn to perform. It is something of an icon for the place, a visual reminder of the rootedness of the Polish breeding program.

O

ne word can be used to sum up the results of the show: Kahil. Or rather, Kahil, Kahil, Kahil, Kahil … as his sons and daughters swept the gold championships in all four classes. It was an incredible display of the prepotency of his blood, both on his sire’s side, and also his strong Polish dam line. He always adds intense, repeatable qualities while letting the dam breed through, which has given him a remarkable opportunity. It is no secret that the Polish breeders sent many of their very best mares to Kahil Al Shaqab, resulting in his “sky high batting average” as the leading sire at the 2015 Bialka Spring Show. Kahil Al Shaqab (Marwan Al Shaqab x OFW Mishaahl, by Mishaah) was heavily represented among the winning entries. Standing out in that illustrious group of siblings was the Best in Show winner, Morion (Kahil Al Shaqab x Mesalina, by Ekstern). Bred by Michalów State Stud, Morion is

a bright bay with a striking carriage who seems to float over the ground when he moves. Great breeding horses are often stamped with characteristics of exceptional individuals in the tail female line of their pedigree. Morion’s giant, dark eyes and refined, elegant head are extremely reminiscent of his great-great-great granddam Mitra (Celebes x Manilla, by Doktryner), the favorite Kuhailan-type mare of legendary Michalów Director Ignacy Jaworowski. His faith in her contribution to the Michalów program has certainly born fruit in the form of Morion. Morion was also the Gold Champion Junior Male in a class that saw his half-brother Pitawal (Kahil Al Shaqab x Pepita, by Ekstern) earn the bronze championship. Kahil Al Shaqab sons won gold and silver in the huge Yearling Colt class of 26 entries, with Paris (x Palmeta, by Ecaho) winning the top prize for Janów Podlaski State Stud, and El Pais (x El Fatha, by Volume 46, No. 2 | 253

Entyk) winning the silver, also for Janów. The bronze champion in the class was Michalów’s beautiful Kwarc, a son of Equator (QR Marc x Ekliptyka, by Ekstern) and out of Kasjopeja, a daughter of the magnificent international champion and Triple Crown winner, *Kwestura (Monogramm x Kwesta, by Pesennik). In a very impressive showing, Equator also sired the Silver Champion Yearling Filly, Pontia (x Polonica, by Ekstern), who is a stunning tribute to her sire and an ethereal reflection of her dam line. Equator is an exciting show horse who has passed that winning attitude on to Pontia in large measure. Both the gold and bronze champions were by Kahil Al Shaqab, with Empuza (x Eulerta, by Ganges) earning the bronze, and Bambina (x Bellisa, by Poganin) taking the top honor. Bambina’s section of the 36 filly class was extremely deep in quality, with each of those 11 yearlings scoring a 90 or higher.

The gold championship for Junior Fillies went to Kahil Al Shaqab’s glamorous daughter Al Jazeera (x Alhasa, by Ganges), making it a clean sweep of the championships for Kahil Al Shaqab. The Silver Champion Junior Filly, Galerida, is the best example of her sire, Shanghai E.A. (WH Justice x Salymah EA, by Khidar), who left a handful of outstanding foals after standing inside the State Stud. Out of 2005 World Champion Mare Galilea (Laheeb x Georgia, by Monogramm), Galerida is even more typey and feminine than either her dam or her exquisite granddam Georgia, who will be offered to an eager public at the Pride of Poland auction in August. Galerida has a perfect topline and tail-set, which always makes a horse look expensive. The bronze champion in the class was Wersa (Ekstern x Wasa, by WH Justice), showing that Ekstern (Monogramm x Ernestyna) is not to be forgotten in all the excitement surrounding Kahil Al Shaqab.

Also not to be left out in this Polish scenario is the exciting silver championship win by Calateon in the Junior Male class. Out of Calatea (Ekstern x Calineczka, by Metropolis NA), Calateon is a splendid son of Vitorio TO (DA Valentino x Sol Natique, by Solstice), currently on lease to Poland by U.S. breeder Janey Morse. Vitorio’s first Polish foals have done much to identify him as an up-andcoming sire of the highest quality. He has brought the *Mirage sire line back to Polish breeding, which is flush with stallions tracing to Nazeer, while Vitorio TO is virtually Nazeer-free. Phenotypically, he brings the shoulder and carriage evident in his daughter Perforia, who remains in the Polish breeding program after her breathtaking dam *Perfirka (Gazal Al Shaqab x Perforacja, by Ernal) was sold to Cedar Ridge Arabians at last year’s Pride of Poland sale. Perforia placed a scant half point behind the eventual Junior Champion Filly Al Jazeera, in the 2-yearold class after bringing the crowd to their feet with her lofty trot, wicked neck set, hooky throat, and extreme presence. Like the legendary Michalów-bred Emigrantka at Aachen years ago, Perforia really left us all dazzled. With a new roster of judges and a change of setting, there is always room for a different opinion that can lead to a new result in the subjective world of horse shows. But following the near-complete domination by Kahil Al Shaqab get at Bialka, there is little doubt that his offspring will be earning many honors at the Polish National Championship Show to be held at Janow Podlaski this coming August.
