SOPHIE YIH BY SARAH JAYNE JOHNSON

A

t this year’s Youth Nationals, rider Sophie Yih did not go unnoticed. This 13 & Under superstar took home two national championships in the UPHA Challenge Cup and Arabian Show Hack, a Reserve National Championship in Half-Arabian Saddle Seat Equitation, and three top tens in Arabian Show Hack 18 & Under, Half-Arabian County Pleasure and Arabian Saddle Seat Equitation.

or a show and not miss a day of school. What is better than that? She gets PE credit for her riding!

With every champion there is a background of hard work, dedication and sweat. These elements are what makes Sophie such a strong rider in and out of the show ring. Sophie’s dedication is shown in all aspects of her life. Sophie’s mother, Cathy Yih, explained Sophie’s commitment to her love of horses, “She is committed to her training and puts heart, mind and soul into her practices, and she looks for activities outside of the sport to help her become a better rider, from yoga to strength training.”

Ramsay talked about his rider with all smiles, “Sophie has the drive and determination to accomplish anything she sets her mind to. She has grown so much over the years and I am so proud of everything she has achieved. She is one of those kids that always brings a smile to your face. She truly loves her horses.”

Sophie will be in eighth grade at the Tilden Preparatory School in Walnut Creek, CA, this fall. She travels 477 miles to get to Stachowski Farm in San Marcos, CA, where she trains with Jonathan Ramsay. Her school is structured so that kids are able to individualize their schedule and their instruction. The best part? Because it is individualized, she can go to lessons,

She started riding with Ramsay in 2015 in walk-trot and debuted in the 13 & Under in 2016. In this final year of 13 & Under before she moves up to the 14-18 age division, Sophie brought three horses to compete with: CF Bella Luna, BR Heir Afires, and Heiress TRGR.

When talking to Sophie about her favorite moment about Youth Nationals, she explained it was her win in the UPHA Saddle Seat class. “My favorite moment was when they announced I had won the UPHA class,” Sophie explained. “It was my very first national championship and an amazing way to end my 13 & Under career.” Her mom described her approach to her final year, “In this last 13 & Under year, and has approached her training with much dedication, passion and commitment.”

Ar abian Horse Times | 9 | The Rose Report

Asked about her favorite classes to show in, Sophie’s choice of Equitation and Show hack would explain her favorite moment. However, her favorite class to watch is Park, which is one class she wants to show in one day. Her goal for her first year of 15-18 is to be the best she can be. She is not a rider who shies away from a challenge. Ms. Yih could not be prouder of her daughter’s commitment to bettering herself in doing what she loves, “She loves being engaged in all aspects of this sport, from training to showing, and works through the tough times. She learns from her mistakes and approaches her next lesson with even more enthusiasm.” Sophie’s show season is not over yet. In August, she will be showing at the Saddlebred World Championship in Louisville, KY, with her Saddlebred. She will also be showing in Kansas City at the American Royal later this year. As Sophie has proven that dedication surely does pay off, there is no doubt she will most definitely rise to the occasion in the rest of her show season. n

THE FUTURE OF OUR BREED IS LOOKING BRIGHT! BY ANNE STRAT TON

T

he statistics are impressive. Seven hundred and seven horses competed at 26th Annual Youth Nationals, held in Oklahoma City, July 21-28, 2018. And that’s not entries, but live, talented Arabians. Entries of more than 2,500 meant that on average, each of those horses accompanied a junior exhibitor into the ring 3.21 times. Given the fact that the Youth Nationals is a perennial feel-good story (what’s not to like about kids who have worked hard to get there having a lot of fun?), this year’s event can be called an undeniable success. There were several highlights to the show. One was the growth reflected in the halter division, says Chair of the Show Commission and Show Manager Mickey Hegg. “This may be attributed to the comparative method of evaluating in-hand horses, as well as that at Youth Nationals, we do not allow any noise making or bagging in the paddock or the chute into the ring; exhibitors may just trot their horses around. It has certainly brought some dignity back into the ring, as well as keeping some of the smaller exhibitors safe. We’ve been told by parents that they appreciate our methods, all of which are printed in the Omnibus.” Some of the show’s other larger classes included Country English Pleasure JOTR 14-18 (purebred 42, Half-Arabian 32), Hunter Pleasure JOTR 14-18 (purebred 31, Half-Arabian 36), Showmanship (31), Half-Arabian Hunter Seat Equitation NTJ 14-18 (30), and Half-Arabian Ranch Riding (28). Historically, Youth Nationals also has been well-known for its social activities as well as its show ring action, and this year was no different. A water balloon fight, dog races, a dog costume class, dodgeball game, hippology contest, popsicle party, and more were on the schedule, which also included educational clinics. A random survey of first-time attendees revealed enthusiasm. “Awesome!” said Devon Allen, who showed Kid Rock PCA to the national championship in Half-Arabian Country Pleasure Walk/Trot. Her brother Blake, who nailed top tens aboard HB Cashbar, added, “Incredible!” Was it all they had expected it to be? “Yes, and much more.” Ar abian Horse Times | 16 | The Rose Report

Alijandro Vigil Jr., who won the national championship in Arabian Mares JTH with Oula Aljassimya, offered, “It was amazing! I had a great time sharing and bonding with my friends and Oula. My favorite part was spending time with Oula and how I felt when I heard, ‘Welcome our unanimous champion, Oula Aljassimya!’” Youth Nationals has gone so smoothly for so many years that it

may be easy for fans to forget how much goes into making it the event that it is. Mickey Hegg estimates that the show commission, security, and volunteers put in more than 7,000 hours in Oklahoma City during the show and the 10 days preceding it. And that’s just time. “There are those of us on the show commission who call on our faithful friends and members of the horse community to buy patronships, champion jackets and belt buckles, and vendor exhibit space,” she says. “A lot of that is not just automatic, and then deserves a personal touch from additional members, bending over backwards to make sure they are cared for to the highest standard. We’re forever grateful for all of that! There are so many facets to putting on this horse show, and we do it for the love of the kids.” “Seeing our children having such a wonderful time with their Arabian horses, families, and friends for the week of Youth Nationals is one of the highlights of our year,” nods Show Commissioner Kathie Hart. “So many of us have grown up having the Arabian horse be a large part of our lives, and it is so rewarding seeing that gift being passed on.”

Connor and Mr Mayhem (Apollopalooza x Ivana Trotalot), Arabian English Pleasure Select JTR Champions. Ar abian Horse Times | 36 | The Rose Report

The Rose Report Back Cover Story

CONNOR KOCH

BY ALLY EDWARDS

C

onnor Koch had a Youth Nationals straight out of a dream. Going into Youth this year, 12-year-old Connor’s goal was to earn his first national championship, which he achieved four times over, winning Champion Arabian and Half-Arabian English Pleasure JOTR 13 & Under and Select JTR with both Mr Mayhem and Helluva Storm LR, while also garnering top tens in the Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure with King’s Ransum. Connor has been showing Arabians for five years, his first Youth Nationals in 2015 with Bellisimo and Select Show Horses. Connor currently rides with Jessica Clinton at Vicki Humphrey Training Center. Jessica describes him as a tenacious and sweet boy who really cares for his horses. Connor’s relationship with his horses extends far beyond the mounting block. It is not just about showing for Connor, which she says is the key trait that will take him far in the horse industry. In Oklahoma, he made all his horses frozen apple treats to help them beat the heat. Connor loves to help behind the scenes too, like grooming the horses and tacking them up. Most importantly, he genuinely cares for each of his horses’

well being. Jessica says you can often find him in his horses’ stalls giving them love and pets. Connor worked on his riding all summer with Jessica, never complaining once about being tired, in order to achieve his goals. When asked about his trainers, he was so appreciative of the “wonderful job” Jessica has done with Helluva Storm, affectionately called Taz, and helping Connor improve with him and get to Youth Nationals. This was his first year showing both Mr Mayhem and Taz. Taz is only 5 years old and Connor showing him at Youth was not originally planned, but their special connection paired with Connor’s determination convinced his trainers that he was ready. When describing his horses, Connor said Ransum is pretty lazy and it takes a lot to get him going; Taz loves his job and is eager to please; and Mayhem likes to go, but really doesn’t like it when someone steps on his tail! In the future, Connor’s goals are to work more on equitation and continue to grow with Taz. For future nationals, he wants to, of course, try to win more championships, but ultimately just have fun.

Ar abian Horse Times | 37 | The Rose Report

Connor’s favorite moment of Youth Nationals was being called champion with Mr Mayhem, because it was his first national championship. He stole the entire crowd’s heart as he humbly but excitedly trotted out of the arena with a rose blanket and a huge smile. His genuine and kind personality paired with his infectious and constant smile, earned him the Sportsmanship Award at Youth this year. Connor is nice to anyone and everyone, super polite, and always has a good attitude. Connor’s presence at Youth Nationals did not go unnoticed. By the end of the week, everyone was rooting for him because of his talent and his charm. The Arabian horse is lucky to have Connor as the future of its industry; someone who is one-of-akind and ultimately loves his horses more than any roses he may win, even though those are certainly the icing on the cake. Lastly, Connor wants to thank Jess, Vicki, and his parents, for everything they have taught him and their constant support. n

OUTH ATIONALS CORRESPONDENTS

Arista Lowe

What was your favorite part about interviewing those at Youth Nationals? I loved the questions I asked and the answers I received. I also loved learning new things about the trainers I interviewed. You are a natural in front of the camera. Is this something you would like to pursue? Yes, I have experience in front of cameras. I have worked for Maybelline, AT&T, NordicTrack and Walmart, doing commercials and print jobs. Is there someone you missed who you would have loved to interview? No, I got to interview everyone I wanted to. Who was your favorite interviewee? I liked interviewing Lauren Grabski, because I loved the questions and her responses. If you were stuck on a desert island, which 3 people would you take with you? My mom … to spend time with her and be away from my siblings; Emma … she is my best friend and we do a lot of things together; and Annika … my other best friend, because she is very smart and she would know what to do. What is your favorite thing about Youth Nationals? That I got to see friends from all over the country. I also liked competing and getting the opportunity to interview trainers. Favorite color? A very light blue. Finally … Chipotle or Qdoba? Chipotle.

2018 YOUTH NATIONALS

Judges’ Highlights

CHANCE ARAKELIAN …

The competition was a pleasure to judge; the equitation would have been competitive anywhere in the country.

JOANNE BOUWHUIS …

DALE PEDERSON …

After judging the Equitation 14-17 class, when no one knew who the winner would be and it was a total surprise to the winner herself, with real tears and a mother and father also in tears. It was very sweet to see a dad being so proud of his child. The classes were not the biggest I have seen in past years, but the quality was terrific.

ELIZABETH SHATNER …

Seeing some very nicely balanced young riders that could follow their horses’ movement with relaxed and quiet aids.

Families enjoying Arabian horses!

ROBIN BRUECKMANN …

I loved seeing these enthusiastic and skilled riders showing their talented horses to the best of their ability!

JACK THOMAS …

Youth Nationals itself was a highlight. The quality of the horses and the horsemanship of the riders and handlers was amazing. It was truly and honor to be standing in center ring.

LAURA DORAN …

Overall, I was so very impressed with the professionalism and grace of our junior exhibitors; I’m incredibly proud of our Arabian community and sport that fosters well-rounded life capabilities, including self-confidence, effective communication and leadership.

CATHERINE VECSEY …

I had to give this some thought! I think for me it was the best moment to walk out into center ring on the first morning knowing it was all still in front of me and knowing what a great show those kids were going to put on for all of us to judge! For me to have the best seat in the house was an enormous thrill! They certainly did not disappoint!

DEBORAH JOHNSON …

Hard to single out one thing … excellent western horsemanship riders demonstrating awesome patterns, great ranch riding horses, excellent courage in reining and cow horse classes, beautiful trail presentations, stunning hunter pleasure horses, solid walk jog western exhibitors. It was a pleasure to see such wonderful presentations across the board for our panel.

DEBORAH WITTY …

The depth, numbers and quality of the Ranch Riding this year. For only the second year offered, it is obvious that the discipline is popular and growing. I would love to see the Ranch Riding split into age divisions next year.

Graduating Seniors

HANNAH FELDMAN Years Involved w/ Horses 13 # of YN Competed In 8 Proudest Youth Moment Winning both the JTR/JOTR Arabian Hunter, as well as Side Saddle in my first year of 14-18, all with the same horse. Will Miss The Most The high energy and competitiveness the kids bring to Youth Nationals!

LUCIANA HERNANDEZ Years Involved w/ Horses 11 # of YN Competed In 7 Proudest Youth Moment Winning National Champion in both the JOTR/JTR Half-Arabian Mounted Native Costume classes at the 2018 Youth Nationals.

Will Miss The Most The people I’ve met along this journey in the Arabian horse industry. Riding Teaches … you to work hard and never give up on something you are passionate about. Keep working toward your goal even if it seems impossible, because one day you might just reach it. YN Sum Up It has been the journey of a lifetime and has truly shaped me into the woman I am today.

Ar abian Horse Times | 57 | The Rose Report

Riding Teaches … dedication, patience, loyalty... the list goes on! YN Sum Up An incredible way to spend my childhood and growing up.

SAMANTHA MIKESELL Years Involved w/ Horses 12 # of YN Competed In 3 Proudest Youth Moment Winning my first National Championship with Buddy Holly LPR! Will Miss The Most The people I got to surround myself with and the support from everyone at my barn.

EMILY PATE Years Involved w/ Horses 12 # of YN Competed In 5 Proudest Youth Moment Winning my first set of reserve national championship roses in the Arabian Country JOTR 14-18 with my favorite horse, Honoroll.

Riding Teaches … that everybody has bad rides once in awhile, but as long and you work towards making it better next time, that one time doesn’t make you a bad rider! YN Sum Up Sometimes it didn’t go the way I had planned, but it always made the best memories, no matter what!

Will Miss The Most Competing with my horses and the relationships I have formed with my horse show friends over the years. Riding Teaches … that hard work and dedication pays off, and that I have become a better rider from competing with the best of the best at Youth Nationals. YN Sum Up Never give up and always give 110% in every ride.

KENDALL RICKERT Years Involved w/ Horses 14 # of YN Competed In 9 Proudest Youth Moment My national championship with DA Slim Shady in 2013. Will Miss The Most Being around to help and support all the younger kids showing at Youth.

ELAINA ROEDER

Years Involved w/ Horses 16 # of YN Competed In 13

ERYN ZIMMERMAN Years Involved w/ Horses 13 # of YN Competed In This year was my first and last Youth Nationals. Proudest Youth Moment Getting qualified to go! I do not own and have never owned a horse, so it was and is a huge deal to me.

Proudest Youth Moment Winning the Arabian Saddle Seat Equitation this year. In my first year of 14-18, I made it my goal to win the three Saddle Seat Eq classes. This class was the only piece I was missing. It was my last equitation class ever and to end on a win was truly unbelievable. I had the privilege of showing the Laus wonderful horse, Strickly Business. It was the best pattern I have ever done. It’s an amazing feeling when you know you did your best and your hard work paid off.

Riding Teaches … poise, no matter the circumstance. With riding, not everything is 100% in your control. You are working with an animal and you’re being judged by someone who might prefer something different. No matter how bad your ride is going, it’s important that you don’t show it. If you don’t get the result you were hoping for, congratulate the person who did because your time is coming. Riding these beautiful horses is a gift. Smile and just enjoy the moment.

Will Miss The Most Equitation. I love the attention to detail and how competitive it is. I’m going to miss not being able to walk through the airport as I head home because I’m so sore from Vicki and Jess’s Eq. lessons.

YN Sum Up Surround yourself with people who believe in you and love what you do.

Riding Teaches … what I want to do with my life. I want to be able to help people like me by one day creating a program where kids from a single parent income home are sponsored to go to a certain amount of shows per year. YN Sum Up My youth experience has been different, challenging, fun and stressful, but very, very, very satisfying.

Will Miss The Most Showing Arabians while I’m in college. I will be riding Quarter Horses in college, so I won’t be competing with Arabians for a while.

You Heard It Here ...

FARM FAVE MOMENTS Show Highlight Watching our riders achieve what they are capable of, whether that is a national championship, a top ten or a great ride.

Show Wish The younger age group REALLY needs to be 14 & Under. There also needs to be different judging panels for the saddle seat equitation.

Proudest Show Moment No parents cried!

LARRY & JODY HOFFMAN HESTEN PARK

YN Does It Best This show commission is very accessible and available. We feel they really listen to an exhibitor and take all facts into consideration for a decision.

Show Highlight Having two riders from Cedar Ridge’s lesson program attend the show, and both come home with their first show horses. The future of the Arabian breed is bright!

STEPHANIE DAVISSON CEDAR RIDGE ARABIANS

Proudest Show Moment I was most proud to see our riders, even though this is an individual sport, compete as a team. They helped each other get ready, watched every class, cheered for their highs, and comforted each other during the lows. I love watching the way they interact with each other and the pride in each other and their horses they exhibit. YN Does It Best Due to the fact that it is a show for kids, and it is during the summer months, it easier

Ar abian Horse Times | 65 | The Rose Report

to make it a family affair. It’s fun to see competitors along with their family members participating, and more or less making a vacation out of it. Show Wish Shorten the show a bit; there are two to four classes a session the first few days of the show which makes those days drag on and makes for a long week for everyone attending the show. Shortening the show may also decrease the cost for some competitors and make it easier for them to attend.

VICKI HUMPHREY VHTC

Show Highlight I thought that the 14-18 Equitation classes this year were some of the best ridden rails and the most well executed patterns I have ever seen. The time and effort that goes on

CARMELLE & SHAWN ROOKER ROOKER TRAINING STABLE

behind the scenes to seamlessly drop irons and technically land accurate halts and pivots, was evident and the results impressive. The depth of those classes seemed bottomless. Proudest Show Moment For VHTC, showing 10 horses to eight national championships and two reserves made me very proud of the work and effort these riders put in to accomplish these wins. YN Does It Best The activities for the kids—chill room, ice cream socials, parties—are amazing. They do a great job making the kids feel a part of something bigger than themselves. Show Wish There have been many positive improvements to the schedule to keep conflicts to a minimum. However, a suggestion would be

to let a panel of trainers tweak the schedule to spread out the classes for horses who are doing double duty, for example, country and equitation. Also, the deadline for entries needs to be earlier. My suggestion is entries from the late Regionals should be turned in three days after qualifying. That way, we would know the totals in the classes before plane tickets are purchased and owners have to sit for four days because their classes were moved forward. I feel that we could shorten the show by three days. The breaks were very long and then the show went very late. Maybe we could explore the idea of morning and evening sessions only, if the schedule is similar to this year and days are not eliminated.

Show Highlight When the temperature came down from 110! Proudest Show Moment I had so many. We had a fantastic show, and everyone rode great and brought home ribbons and roses. But the proudest moment was when two horses were not feeling well, and one ended up in the clinic and could not be shown, the way the kids handled the disappointment of not showing with grace, sportsmanship and genuine concern for the welfare of the horses over everything else.

YN Does It Best The show staff and everyone involved in putting on the show are very exhibitor friendly. It seems to be a “yes” attitude instead of a “no” attitude.

Show Highlight When my girls were champion and reserve in the Half-Arabian Show Hack.

Show Wish I would like to see changes with some of the age splits and more consistency with the section splits.

Proudest Show Moment I was very proud of all my girls and can’t possibly pick one thing.

CHRISTY CLEMENTS

YN Does It Best It is more family oriented. It really is a great environment for the whole family.

CHCT Ar abian Horse Times | 66 | The Rose Report

Show Wish Change the schedule to eliminate a day or two from the show. This will make it more affordable for families to be there. Have two sessions instead of three; a 10:00 am til whenever, and an evening session.

EMME MOORE HOLLY WOOD TOI FOUNDATION Show Highlight My favorite part has always been Equitation. A huge highlight for me is putting together The Hollywood Toi Foundation’s scholarships and Memorial Trophy for the H/A Saddle Seat Equitation 14-18 Championship. I also love getting to see the kids we sponsor at Youth. We get the honor of sending some pretty special kids each year and watching them compete. Their positive attitude and sportsmanship no matter how well they do or do not place, and just their sheer passion for the sport is incredibly inspiring. Of course, getting to see my closest friends and second family is my favorite part about going to OKC!

JOEL & ASHTON KIESNER KIESNER TRAINING

Show Highlight Ashton: Watching Alexis win the national championship in H/A Equitation 14-17. She has worked so hard, for so many years for that one moment. It has been a real journey. Many highs and lows. It is an unbelievable feeling to accomplish something that you have only ever dreamt of and for us to do it all together as a family is a memory we will have for a lifetime. I tear up just thinking about it. I’m not sure anyone really understands just how big that win was to her. Joel: The same for me. Seeing Alexis’ face, how happy she was … seeing my wife’s face,

The

Rose Report

Proudest Show Moment I’m always proudest when my fellow VHTC riders go in the ring! I’m not able to stay long when I go to Youth, and I’d love to the opportunity to catch up and cheer with my barn more, but I’m always rooting for my home team in spirit. I’m also very happy and proud to see horses that my family raised, and that I used to show, being loved and doing well at Youth, such as Elle Yes with Luci Hernandez.

YN Does It Best There’s an energy about Youth Nationals that’s unlike any other show, in my opinion. The kids are hopeful to win a prestigious title, but they are equally excited to have a great time running around with their friends, engaging in water gun fights, riding their horses around bareback during off times, cheering on their barn-mates, and tearing up when their best friend wins the national title they know he/she worked so hard for. Their best times are had both in and out of the ring at this show, and I think anyone can learn a lot of from these kids.

how happy she was. How happy I felt for her. It was an unbelievably difficult class. It’s hard to get, so I was just thrilled.

Joel: It’s not a great facility or time of year to be there; it’s really hot, but the kids and competition make it great. It’s those kids and how competitive they are, the wonderful horses that come to that show, and how well they are presented. That’s what makes it. It’s pretty clear that you could have it in the north pole, or hell, and it would still draw a lot of people. It’s kids competing, their friendships, quality horses, and just how stinkin’ good they are.

Proudest Show Moment Ashton: Watching my two beautiful daughters accomplish goals and conduct themselves with so much grace. Youth Nationals is the biggest horse show in our household and doing this all together as a family will not last forever. I am savoring every moment. I am also so proud of our entire team. Doing two double victory passes at a Nationals show is amazing. That was a first for us. All my riders came home with at least a top ten and that is something I am very proud of. It’s not just handed to you, you have to work at it, and they all did. Joel: Being proud of our entire staff; everyone earning a champion or reserve in the horses that they were working, between my wife and I, and also Leah Beth and John. YN Does It Best Ashton: Youth Nationals is such a great show, so unique from other shows in the way that parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and all the above come to cheer on their family member. It is a real family affair and is so important to keep it a fun, exciting and enjoyable show, facility and location. Ar abian Horse Times | 67 | The Rose Report

Show Wish Ashton: I personally think the show needs to be moved to a facility that is better horse and exhibitor friendly. I miss the kids and horses being able to get outside and run around and enjoy the fresh air. I am afraid that the current facility and time of year is not good for the long-term health of the show. Joel: Move it to Albuquerque and get Ssavings in the show arena. I also think that 19-yearolds shouldn’t be showing; those who are already in college. I think it’s a mistake for a lot of different reasons. One is that it changes the dynamic of the show in some ways.
