The 2019 Youth Nationals—Big Dreams & Bright Futures BY L AURA MORTON
S
ince its initiation in 1993, youth horsemen and women eagerly gather every year for the Youth National Arabian & Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show. Instead of using summer vacation as a time to binge watch Netflix or play countless hours of Xbox, youth riders and handlers alike, are spending their time at the barn, practicing patterns, equitation and general horsemanship in anticipation of this very event. During this impressionable period of life, these young men and women must have the maturity to handle competition against fellow top exhibitors from around the country, showing horses often witnessed competing at the adult U.S. National level. Whether winning the title of National Champion or nothing at all, parents and families show enormous pride for their child’s accomplishments, appreciating the responsibility and dedication it takes to be a part of this challenging, highly competitive sport. It takes teamwork, early mornings, late nights, overcoming fears, and a trusting partnership between horse and rider to find success at the national level. Endless support from families, trainers, friends, barn staff, and the AHA youth committee is also a must to match this incredible opportunity with success! In its 27th year, 665 horses with a total of 2,288 entries converged on Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the Jim Norick Arena on July 21-27, with the Arabian Country English Pleasure JOTR 14-18 class having the most entries (34). Rounding out the top five biggest disciplines entered were Hunter Pleasure, Hunter Seat Equitation and Showmanship. “The show was great this year,” proclaims Show Manager, Sharon Richards. “The weather was fantastic with most days in the 80s, and we held the new ‘Experience Classes’ at the beginning of the show, reaching out to first time exhibitors. Those that participated truly enjoyed the experience, so we are planning to hold the classes again next year.” She adds, “All of the disciplines were nicely represented. The horses were presented by very talented riders and were so beautiful to watch, one by one, day by day. The rings ran smoothly, like well-oiled machines, and the exhibitors enjoyed their rides.” Ar abian Horse Times | 18 | The Rose Report

With the focus centered on youth, events were held to promote and educate the future of the Arabian horse industry, as well as provide an outlet from the stress and anxieties of competition, where attendees could just have fun with friends from all over the country. Activities included an AHYA dance and ice-cream social, stick horse workshop and contest, sponsored water balloon fights and color wars, as well as a photo and “golden horseshoe” scavenger hunt to get attendees familiar with the grounds. A Backyard Bash Bar-B-Que was held at Café 501 on Wednesday night, where 20% of the proceeds benefited AHA and the Friends of Vail foundation. Included was a chef dinner and specialty adult libations, as well as free ‘family-friendly’ outdoor activities and music; a go-to staple to attend next year! The following evening held a crowd favorite with the largest number of entries in any class, the Dog Costume Class and 14th Annual Dog Races. Over $10,000 was awarded in scholarships at the show from three different causes: the Arabian Horse Foundation, The Hollywood Toi Foundation, and Friends of Vail. The heart of each strives to promote the growth and engagement of the industry by creating more opportunities for youth to compete, as well as further their collegiate education.
It is the extent to which exhibitors and AHYA representatives are involved in the industry that reveals a promising future for the breed. One-on-one interviews were conducted by a junior reporter of her peers about their opinions of the show and results of their classes. Youth participants were pleased to be involved and excited to provide their input. Prior to the start of classes on Saturday, July 20th, 115 youth attended the Annual AHYA Convention where they elected their new Executive Officers and voted on a proposed age split resolution. Additionally, a youth representative went to the OKC National Memorial Museum to commemorate the OKC bombing in 1995 by writing, “Sending love from Arabian Youth Nationals” on a chalkboard for public view. It is the promotion of the Arabian horse breed through public awareness and education that is most vital for the growth and strength of the industry, and Youth Nationals did their best to contribute with their “Total Arabian Interaction and Learning” (T.A.I.L) Tours. Given daily throughout the show, newcomers were introduced to the Arabian horse. By providing a welcoming environment, the tour’s aim is to inspire visitors to become involved within the Ar abian Horse Times | 19 | The Rose Report

industry and fall in love with the beauty and versatility of the breed. The T.A.I.L. program, started by Shelly Stevens in 2005, gives adults and children of all ages the opportunity to learn more about the Arabian horse from educated volunteers. There were expressions of wonder and enthusiasm as large tour groups were guided throughout the show grounds. OKC Fairground Officials are planning a total revamp of the grounds, including a state-of-the-art coliseum, to accommodate such events like Youth Nationals. Providing a welcoming atmosphere for its visitors, Oklahoma City prides itself in hosting a national level competition. With top-notch facilities, not only was the competition fierce and the events entertaining for all ages, youth exhibitors were engaged and participated as representatives and active leaders of the industry, ensuring a strong future for the Arabian horse breed and all that it encompasses. Sharon Richards concludes, “The Arabian horse world is so lucky to have such dedicated young people coming to our show. The youth is the backbone of our Arabian horse industry and we truly hope everyone will come back (with a friend!) in 2020.” Candid photos by Ally Edwards & Ashley Gallún

T
o an audience of almost 100 UPHA Challenge Cup exhibitors, family members, and their trainers, Nancy Becker, UPHA Director of Fundraising, promoted the UPHA Ribbons of Service Program during a reception held on Sunday, July 21st between the preliminary and final stages of the UPHA Challenge Cup at Youth Nationals. Gift bags containing a detailed and informative UPHA Ribbons of Service Packet, and goodies for UPHA finalists, as well as their horses, were distributed to each finalist. At the end of the reception, Becker announced that raffle tickets were available for all who wanted to participate/sell to earn UPHA Ribbons of Service Community Service hours for the program. Sarah Kirkpatrick, Lizzy Deering, Jackie Garcia, Halle Zimmerman and Mia Havir jumped at the chance and sold over $1,800 within one day! Congratulations are in order to these hard-working young ladies. The raffle ticket winner will receive a riding suit of their choice, valued at $3,500 and generously donated by DeRegnaucourt, Ltd. The UPHA Challenge Cup Sportsmanship Award, sponsored by Richard Wright, is awarded to the rider who serves as a role model and exhibits characteristics that exemplify positive sportsmanship principles. 2019 YOUTH NATIONALS Judges’ Highlights and dressage office made my judging duties a pleasure. The riders were all well turned out and have wonderful horses to work with and learn from. I especially enjoyed the Walk/Trot riders; they were clearly already seasoned competitors and rode with great concentration and skill. I look forward to seeing many of these young equestrians continue to enjoy riding, dressage and their Arabian partners for years to come. Thank you, Arabian Horse Association, for the opportunity to serve as a show official.
Kelly Elm …
One of many highlights … bling boots and giant spurs … priceless!
Dawn Coons …
All working western exhibitors were fabulous and talented! My highlights: ~ the run-off for National Champion reining seat equitation … they went for it and it was fabulous! ~ Freestyle Reining ... so much talent and creativity with Friday night excitement! I even enjoyed being booed for having to unfortunately DQ two great rides due to lacking maneuvers. The kids handled it well and what judge doesn’t love a passionate audience! It was a beautiful show and all who exhibited should be quite proud! Thank you for the honor to judge these talented riders and athletic horses!
Lisa El-Ramey …
I enjoyed being part of the tradition of Youth Nationals from the judge’s side of the arena. This is the first occasion I have had to perform in this role, and the show commissioners, staff,
The riding ability, focus and use of the arena was impressive in all divisions. The Friday night Saddle Seat Equation 14-18 final was a highlight for me. Such a deep class, and they rose to the occasion. So great to see so many of the horses and riders coming together with their best performances for a difficult top-level pattern worthy of the best!
Irving Evans…
I was impressed by the support amongst all the youth and parents alike, especially during the awards presentation for the top ten. Also, a big thanks to our announcer for the week, Dan Savage, as he did a great job!
Nancy Free …
Without question, parent and exhibitor enthusiasm was so nice to see, and I was very touched by the emotions of the parents who ran into the arena to be a part of win pictures. The comradery amongst barn mates was very apparent as well. Also, I was so impressed with all the staff members who donate their time and efforts to make this show run smoothly. I very much appreciated being a part of the hunter judging panel. I met so many wonderful people working hard to make this event a success for the kids. Ar abian Horse Times | 48 | The Rose Report
Peggy Klump …
The whole scope and depth of the show was impressive, especially since it was limited to youth equestrians in every discipline. I really enjoyed the interchange between the nearly dozen judges in multiple disciplines that I had the pleasure to meet and chat with while at the show. Both the dressage and sport horse divisions were absolutely terrific. The number and quality of the horses and riders, especially in the 10 & Under division, speaks volumes to the future. The riders were well coached, prepared and the suitability of the horses shined brightly, highlighting the training, harmony and manners during competition. It was a pleasure to judge so many talented riders with horses that show quality gaits with freedom, reach and elasticity. Congratulations to the show management, staff, officials, volunteers and facility workers, etc. ... who work so tirelessly to put on a show of this quality and size.
Kim Morgan …
I can deeply express how honored I was to be asked to judge the Youth Nationals. I judged this show a few years ago and was so impressed with the quality then, but this year the competition was off the charts! Amazing, very well-trained horses and youth showmen that can ride every bit as well as the pros! Many times, the judging panel felt there were quite a few different horses that could be National Champion in many classes. I enjoyed working with the two panels of judges in the Norick Arena; everyone there had the same goal of fair judging and an appreciation for each and every individual showing their horses to us. I would say the future looks very bright! n

Th ir d Ge ne r at ion H or sewoman,
Sawyer Tehan R id e s To Rose s A t Yout h N ationals by COLLEEN SCOTT
When Sawyer Tehan (granddaughter of Barbara Chur, Strawberry Banks Farm) decides she wants to
achieve something, she goes after it. That dedication and tenacity paid off at this year’s Youth Nationals
with three reserve champion rose garlands and an additional top ten award. But one of those garlands in particular was really special.
“I decided I wanted to try show hack this year,” she says. “So I started working on learning how to do show hack over the winter and rode as much as I possibly could. There are so many gaits to learn and making sure you have enough
differentiation between them makes it a really fun and challenging thing to try.” Sawyer and Heir Force One (Afires Heir x EA Leathernlace) would end up
reserve champions in the Arabian English Show Hack JOTR 18 & Under. “It
was just the coolest because executing the class well was something I really set
my mind on and to get a nice prize made it even more meaningful,” she says. Her other performances didn’t disappoint. There was another reserve championship with Rejoice
Rejoice (A Temptation x Rumina Afire) in Arabian Country Pleasure Driving. “That class was a little bittersweet, because it was her last. She gets to go
home and just hang out with the other retirees
now.” Sawyer and ERA Thrillicious (Baske Afire
x Koriene) captured a reserve championship in the
Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure JTR Elite ss and were also top ten in the JOTR class.
Riding since she was 7, Sawyer has competed
at Youth Nationals seven times and has one year
left of youth eligibility. Now a freshman at Texas
Christian University, she says this year’s Youth
Nationals was memorable for not only because of her successes, but also because it represented the end of a chapter in her life.

Sawyer Tehan and Brian Murch
“I’ve always lived so close to the farm (Strawberry Banks) that I could ride every day,” she says.
“Now that I’m going away to college in another part of the country, it just won’t be the same. I
plan to compete again next year because it will
be my last year for Youth Nationals, but it will
definitely have a different feel to it.”
The youngest of four, Sawyer is the only girl,
and the one who inherited her mother’s (Lissa
Heir Force One
Tehan) and grandmother’s love of horses. “I can’t remember a time that I didn’t want to
ride, or just be around the horses,” she says.
“It’s so much fun and rewarding—and it’s even
better because I’ve been able to share the experience
with my mom and grandmother. They have been such great, amazing role models.”
Besides her immediate family, Sawyer also credits Melanie and
ERA Thrillicious
Brian Murch with her success, both in and out of the show ring.
“They’ve been here at the farm almost my entire life, so it’s like having another set of parents,” she says. “Brian is an amazing
horseman. I just can’t say enough good things about him and how much he has helped me grow as a rider and as a person.”
While horses have consumed most of her free time, Sawyer has
also been influenced by her three older brothers. “They would be
outside playing soccer or tennis, so I picked up those sports too.”
Sawyer is also an accomplished pianist and honor roll student. What advice would Sawyer give to youth riders just getting started in walk/trot or 13 & under? She says, “Appreciate
every moment, because whether it’s good or bad, it’s a
new way of learning! Take advantage of every opportunity
you’re given and find something you love and never want to stop doing because that’s exactly how I feel.”
