he Arabian Reining Horse Association (ARHA) would like to welcome you to the prestigious 64th Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show! We have ten days of reining ahead of us, which includes professional, amateur and youth classes, as well as the Arabian and Half-Arabian Reining Futurity Classic.
The Reining Futurity Classic could not be possible without the continued support of Richard Ames, Joe Betten and all of our other annual sponsors. This support has allowed the Reining Futurity Classic to become one of the National Reining Horse Association’s top 35 shows by purse and has paid out almost 1.6 million dollars since 2005. The ARHA would like to thank all our generous sponsors. We could not do this without you. The ARHA is excited for the show to start and is looking forward to seeing our members, supporters and all the talented reining horses. Let’s have some fun, and good luck to everyone!

oing on 21 years, the Scottsdale Arabian Reining Horse Association has proudly boasted the title of the world’s largest Arabian Reining Horse payout, with nearly $2 million in prize money, $1.6 million going to Futurity classes alone since 2005.
Four- and 5-year-old purebreds and Half-Arabians each have their own competition, each doing the same ‘2 go’ format with the ‘clean slate score’ final showing this year on Friday, February 22nd for purebreds and Saturday, February 23rd for Half-Arabians. Both finals begin at 4:00 pm. With DJ-style music and festive fanfare, the Reining Arena (#5) is easily found on the eastern most end of the WestWorld facility. The run downs, slides, rollbacks and turns these young horses perform with their trainers always raises the adrenalin level of the spectators with whoops and whistles from folks, both seasoned competitors and newbies. Yes, it’s a thrill every year to see the new young reining top talent debut. It’s equally as gratifying that many of these young horses will go on to expand their reining careers as top mounts for an ever-growing Amateur sector of this discipline. After all (according to NRHA), “A reined horse should be willingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent resistance.” In other words, a reining horse is a really well-trained horse. Six amateur reining competitors across the age spectrum shared their thoughts with AHT on why they love reining:
McKenna Bein
Dick Ames
Abbey Weiss
Michelle Pease Paulsen
Paige Neufeld
Joe Betten
McKenna Bein (Short Stirrup Amateur Competitor): I love reining as it is such fun being with my friends and showing nice horses. My most awesome experiences have been the opportunity to ride multiple horses at different levels of training. Sometimes I get to show well-trained horses; others are a lot for me to handle, but I work through it! I’m grateful to all these horses, for the varied experiences have made me the showman I am today.
That, plus the thrill of cheering on our top trainers on their best young horses gives great entertainment. And entertainment draws the crowds!
Dick Ames (Reining Horse Breeder and Adult Amateur Competitor): I love that reining is scored. When my non-horse friends watch reining, I explain the basics and the next thing I know, they’re cheering on the performances with the rest of us! One can easily explain patterns and the basics of the scoring system, and that draws the audience in. My favorite competition is the Scottsdale AHRA Futurity. We have the biggest payouts of any show.
My most exciting experience this year was getting closer with my mare, TR Flash Flood. She has been difficult for me to figure out, but the journey was well worth the wait!
Abbey Weiss (Youth Amateur Competitor): My favorite thing about reining is there is always room for improvement. Your faults will be reflected in your scores, but no matter how good you get, you can always get better!
Michelle Pease Paulsen (Adult Amateur Competitor): I love anything with detail, and reining offers the best of this with 12 specific

patterns broken down into multiple exacting maneuvers. One deviation from the pattern and ‘you’re out!’ Still, because each maneuver is scored, if you make a misstep there’s always the possibility of making it up by scoring higher with your subsequent maneuvers. That’s a unique challenge in which we all strive to improve. My most rewarding reining experience was recently and unexpected. My trainer (LaRae Fletcher Powell) and I decided I would show my 5-year-old HalfArabian mare SS A Noble Star (“Sansa”) in the AAOTR and Open reining at the 2018 Canadian Nationals. The Open class was not my priority, rather we entered for the experience together. But anyone who does reining, knows much of the excitement is in its being so unpredictable. Sansa and I connected and had our best ride ever, winning the Open Half-Arabian Reining roses—one of my proudest moments ever! Paige Neufeld (Youth Amateur Competitor): I love reining because of the feeling I get when I ride into an empty arena ready to run down and stop my horse and slide into the dirt. The anticipation is an adrenalin rush—there’s nothing like it! My coolest experience was winning the Half-Arabian Reining Horse JOTR 14-18 at the 2018 Youth Nationals. After years of hard work, learning and dedication, this was my first set of National roses with my awesome horse “Jerry.” He’s the best! Joe Betten (Adult Amateur Competitor): There are so many facets to why I love reining. First of all, you are alone out

there, you and your horse. But the journey to get there consists of teamwork between the horse, rider and trainer, and the reining pen offers much opportunity for learning… and I love learning. Each ride and every horse is its own journey as every one of them is different. Anyone who loves variety can appreciate this. As a rider you get to spend a whole lot of time riding your horse, hours if you want. I enjoy competing but really like to see what I can do with each ride. I like thinking about it before, during and after each ride. Analyzing. Analyzing the variety. Seeking that perfect balance. And then there’s the people who ride reiners. They support each other and celebrate the ups and downs together. It is a friendly community of great folks. My favorite experiences are varied too. I like watching Crystal McNutt show our horses and see what they’re capable of. My new challenge is learning to ride our young horses. It’s like balancing control, yet all the while letting them figure it out on their own. My wife, Michele, continues to progress with her reining skills, and it’s wonderful to share this. Then there’s Custom Gale, my ‘one in a million’ horse. We have an innate connection whether practicing or showing. He is truly special. Finally, I love watching Dick Ames show!
Ten days of reining competition offers all levels of skill and the opportunity to win prize money payouts, roses, ribbons, saddles and even youth school scholarships. The Scottsdale Reining Futurity previews what’s new by bringing breeders, owners and trainers together to launch the careers of promising equine youngsters. Rookie riders of all ages can make their debut, while young riders don helmets to spin, run down and stop with trusty, splendidly trained mounts following NRHA abbreviated patterns. Horses and amateur riders of all ages compete within a ‘ladder of experience’ including Rookie, Limit and Intermediate Rider, on up to Amateur and Amateur Owner Reining. ARHA pays out prize money for many of these events too. The Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show is the largest Arabian horse show in the world. Deemed by many as “The greatest horse show on earth,” one has easy access to watch the very best. Reining draws the electric excitement of supreme partnership between horse and rider. It’s infectious and it’s fun for the whole family. ARHA’s 200 members extend good luck wishes to all competitors. Saunter over to Arena #5 … first time or not, reining is equine performance entertainment like no other! n Ar abian Horse Times | 5 | Reining

The Kents Of Sage Hill Arabians: Devoted To The Arabian Working Western Horse

early 40 years in, the Kent family equine legacy embraces its original dream, to breed and train the best Arabian working western stock in the industry.
Hailing from dry farmer ancestry in Idaho, Dave Kent’s father worked draft horses in the field. Sage Hill’s owner shares, “As a young man, my father dreamed of riding and owning Arabian horses. He would spend long days partnering with the farm’s draft horses, describing their Ar abian Horse Times | 16 | Reining
Ultimately, the syndicate was dissolved, and Dave became sole owner of Vaguely Noble, who lived until the ripe old age of 30, siring bloodstock until age 29. “Vaguely Noble cemented our breeding program,” Dave elaborates. “His offspring possessed the athletic ability and good mindedness key to making a great working western horse. Today, nearly all our stock goes back to him.” Married with two young sons and two daughters, Dave and wife, Vicky, also took in outside horses for training. The boys (Nathan and Preston) loved the life too, gaining expertise via hands-on learning while breeding and training young stock. Daughters, Jenna and Rachel, were Dad’s ‘key helpers,’ even more so after their older brothers left home. 2004 blessed the Kents with the birth of the Vaguely Noble son Nobles Top Gun. “We knew immediately, he was special,” the Kents concur. “Nobles Top Gun was born so stout, so pretty. He wowed us all from the very beginning.” The striking bay stallion fulfills every ideal of an Arabian working western mount, earning multiple Scottsdale and National Reining titles, while his get carried forward every piece needed to do the job.
Dave and Vaguely Noble, 2009. methodical movement as a chug, chug, chug. Off time at the movies he viewed Arabian horses on the silver screen, besotted by their floaty gaits and exotic beauty. Determined, my father made good on his dream, acquiring two Half-Arabs for my brother and me when we were kids. “In 1970, my father started looking around for purebred stock, saying, ‘Boys, if we are going to have horses, we are going to have good horses!’” The Kents became acquainted with Arabian breeder Gale Allen, acquiring two purebred mares from Gale’s herd. Dave continues, “Gale became a mentor to us, teaching us bloodlines, giving us guidance. We bred our mares to his stallion, adding to our stock.”
By this time, sons Nathan and Preston were working to establish their own horse training careers. Preston heeded mentor Don Cordingly’s advice of, “Go work for a trainer,” sending top NRHA trainer, Clint Haverty, a self-made video of schooling a Sage Hill home-bred Arabian. “I didn’t tell my mother I was moving to Texas until Clint hired me,” Preston recollects. “With Nathan on his LDS mission in Ecuador at the
After graduating college, Dave and his brother, Bob, returned to the family farm, with Dave taking on the horse breeding program, Bob the farm operation. Soon after, the Kent’s Arab breeding program really took flight. “I definitely inherited my father’s love of the Arabian horse!” Dave chuckles. “I sought to breed horses fitting his inimitable words we heard growing up, ‘If you want your youth to be involved with horses, they need a horse that is nice enough so it’s a pleasure to ride, and pretty enough that they’re proud to be seen on it!” 1984 was a quantum leap for Sage Hill Arabian horse breeding when they partnered to buy the *Muscat son Vaguely Noble. Dave smiles, “Out of a Serafix daughter, Vaguely Noble possessed balance, conformation correctness and that ‘pretty’ we always sought. Gale Allen created our syndicate and off we went!”

Long-time ardent client, Diane Comeau Harasimiuk, shares, “We have ridden with Preston since 2011, owning and showing several Sage Hill-bred horses including Scottsdale and U.S. Champion SH Cool Dude. The Kents have always treated us as their ‘North of the border family.’ Preston committed himself to my growth as a non-pro competitor and as a horsewoman. He takes the time to explain queues/ maneuvers and the reason behind them. I have always felt like I get full attention and time with every ride.” Endurance Competitor Tennessee Lane on SH Vanilla Ice.
time, she was convinced her sons were never to be seen again!” Preston later worked for Kim Wagoner, moving back to Utah. Nathan returned from his mission, filling Preston’s position with Kim Wagoner while he pursued his mission in Frankfurt, Germany. Despite mother Vicky’s concern, both Nathan and Preston returned.
Nathan’s training barn at Ann and Dan McGregor’s Lucky Run Ranch in Kuna, is a full-circle home as Nathan worked for the McGregors while attending college. In between, he worked with NRHA great, Annie Reynolds, where he says, “I learned to appreciate the reining side of working western.” Client and long-time horsewoman, Connie O’Brien, waxes enthusiastically, “For us, Nathan Kent, with the support of equally talented brother, Preston, brings the technical skill and horsemanship resulting in our horses’ success at the highest levels of reining competition. Nathan’s skills are par excellence

with our horses, PA Marco, Adessa SS (now owned by SaulVance LLC), and Sage Hill-bred SH Smoke N Sparks (“Jep”). Jep has worn roses at U.S. Nationals and Scottsdale, and carried my daughter and I on mountain trails while on hiatus at our ranch. He is the epitome of a kind, gentle and useful horse. It is our honor to be associated with the Kent family as clients and friends in the wonderful world of the working Arabian horse.” The Kents envision Sage Hill’s breeding program moving forward, their goal being for every Sage Hill-bred horse to be one they would love to ride themselves. Their horses are doing well in all the working western divisions; certainly reining, but also trail, ranch riding and even cow work. Sage Hill bloodstock has even made it to the top levels of endurance competition! Tennessee Lane, a top endurance competitor shares her praise of the Kents, “I adore my Sage Hill horses for their brains, substance, personality and amazing metabolisms. They’ve carried me over many finish lines first, many earning Best Condition awards.” A Kent family/Sage Hill Arabians top favorite moment presented itself at the 2016 U.S. Nationals when Nathan, astride 2016 National Arabian Reining Champion Horse Nobles Top Gun, and Crystal McNutt, mounted on 2016 National Half-Arabian Champion Reining Horse SH I’m Vaguely Surprised, took over Ford Arena’s final Friday night. Tearing up the green turf, a packed audience brought down the house cheering the slides, turns and rundowns of these top trainers on their Sage Hill-bred Arabians. “My father had the vision to start our breeding program,” Dave Kent says proudly, “and Vaguely Noble pushed it forward. Nathan and Preston’s highly successful and respected training barns have put me and our horses on the map within the Arabian horse industry. I’m so proud of them, as great horsemen and wonderful family men. Vicky and I are delighted grandparents, looking forward to seeing what the next Kent generation will bring.” n
