SCOT TSDALE GUIDE COVER STORY

Europeans have always set the standard for fashion, style and elegance. Surely it was Paul and Ria Gheysens’ eye for beauty that drew them to Arabian horses and inspired them to not only

acquire some of the world’s most important stallions and mares, but to establish their world-class breeding farm, Knocke Arabians, situated in the charming seaside city of Knocke, Belgium. The Gheysens’ dream was to create their ideal Arabian horse; a creature of breathtaking beauty, alluring charm, elegance, and grace; a horse of the highest quality that could win anywhere in the world and ultimately, make their mark on the history of the breed. In 2012, Paul and Ria welcomed an extraordinary colt they named Equiborn K.A. From his first moments of life, it was apparent that Equiborn was the fulfillment of their dreams. Equiborn’s parents, World Champion and Leading Sire of Champions, QR Marc (Marwan Al Shaqab x Swete Dreams) and the aristocratic Polish mare Espadrilla (Monogramm x Emanacja), are evenly matched in beauty as well as genetic strength, as both descend from the most prolific champion producers in the history of the breed. Equiborn K.A. carries two straight Egyptian lines. The first comes through the stallion Gazal Al Shaqab, by Anaza Al Farid, by Ruminaja Ali. The second comes through the mare Swete Dreams; a granddaughter of Ali Jamaal, also by Ruminaja Ali. Equiborn K.A. also carries strong Russian lines through the mares Kajora and The Dreamspinner. In addition, Equiborn K.A.’s sire, QR Marc, possesses lines to classic Polish breeding, which are unequaled for producing beauty and motion. Equiborn’s dam, Espadrilla, was among a group of Polish mares the Gheysens leased expressly for QR Marc. Espadrilla is one of the most remarkable mares produced when Michalow Stud, leased Monogramm for its breeding program. However, Espadrilla’s brilliance is a mirrored reflection of her dam, Emanacja, a daughter of Eukaliptus and one of the most important Polish broodmares of all time, Emigracja. Espadrilla’s bloodlines are priceless as they are a combination of the most important ever bred by Michalow and Janow Podlaski State Studs. It is Equiborn’s irreplaceable dam line that makes him so unique and sets him apart from

every other son of QR Marc. It is also the reason he is such a tremendous asset to breeders around the world. A gift like Equiborn K.A is meant to be shared with others. In November of 2018, David Boggs met with Paul Gheysens and Tom Schoukens of Schoukens Training Center, Belgium for a presentation of horses including Equiborn K.A. David was awestruck by the pearl white stallion. Mr. Gheysens expressed his desire to position QR Marc’s best sons around the world and to make them available to breeders everywhere. Plans were immediately made to bring Equiborn K.A. to America. David Boggs cannot contain his excitement about this special stallion, “We are honored to represent Paul and Ria Gheysens, Knocke Arabians, and Equiborn K.A. at Midwest Training and Breeding Centre. We can’t wait to present him to breeders here in America. Equiborn K.A. has a great pedigree and most important, he embodies all the great horses—stallions and mares—which is critical for breeding. He has so many wonderful traits: big, beautiful eyes, great ears, correct conformation, a well laid-back shoulder, a naturally high tail set and great movement; he should get 20’s for movement! “Our plans are to allow Equiborn to acclimate to his new home here at Midwest and when he’s ready, we’ll welcome him with a champagne party in his honor. We plan to promote Equiborn and his offspring through Arabian Horse Times, providing the best exposure possible for them. When the time is right, we will present him at a fitting venue, like the Arabian Breeders World Cup Show in Las Vegas. “In the meantime, we will be offering some remarkable breeding incentives for Equiborn. People can visit his page on our website to see photos, his pedigree, offspring, and learn more about him. I love this stallion and I believe he has the ability to really contribute to breeders here in America and around the world.” ■

If you’ve ever been to the Scottsdale Show, you know why it is labeled as the greatest show on earth. Considered by most as the one show of the year not to miss, historical moments are guaranteed. AHT reached out to some of the industry’s longest participants for some of their favorite moments. For long-time fans of the show, many of these names will conjure up your own memories and if none ring a bell, be present this year to make your own.

Bob Battaglia … Champion Names that come to mind: Favorite Scottsdale Champion: Gai Argosy. He was 3 years old when he won the 1984 Junior English Pleasure class, and that same year also won the U.S. National English Pleasure Championship class. He won in 1986 and 1995 in Open English Pleasure at Canadian Nationals as well. In 1992, he won the Scottsdale Open English Pleasure Championship. It’s been a really great thing for me and the horse.

Gai Argosy

What makes the Scottsdale show special? I’ve been coming to the horse show since 1972; when it first started at McCormick Ranch, then moved to Bell Road, and finally to WestWorld. It’s special because it shows the progression of the Arabian horse, it is the largest show within the Arabian breed in the world, and the quality of the show itself each year has gotten better and better as breeding has gotten better. The show draws 150,000+ people a year. It puts the breed out for people around the world and is a great promotional tool for the Arabian. It also sets the standard both for breeding and performance in all disciplines for the year, since it is the first show of the year.

Chris Culbreth … Champion Names that come to mind: • Western: Eternaly Barbarys (2000 Champion) and Phenom (2002 Champion) • English/Park: HF Mister Chips, Unanimous Champion in both • Country English: CA Flamethrower (2004 Champion) • Amateur Champions: Michele Culbreth with Galvanizer (2004 Unanimous Western Champion), Gabby Greenberg (20112013 Champion Hunter Seat Equitation) and Kristi Sindt with CA Flamethrower (2003 Unanimous Champion Country Pleasure)

HF Mister Chips

What makes the Scottsdale show special? The year 2002 comes to mind, when we debuted HF Mister Chips. Nobody had ever seen him under saddle before, only in halter a limited amount. His first class, Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse, was in Wendell Arena. He came in the ring and showed like he had been doing it for years, and he won the class. The buzz around this exciting young stallion was incredible. Later in the week, we went Unanimous Champion in the Equidome. Mister Chips was an amazing horse with a heart of gold and the sweetest disposition of any horse I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. In 2004, Chips went Unanimous Champion again in the Arabian Park Championship at Scottsdale.

Aude Espourteille … Champion Names that come to mind: • Favorite Champion: *Bask++ • Western: Fame VF • English: *Elkana++ • Park: Ibn Prowizja • Yearling Filly: RD Shahara Bey, by Bey Shah What makes the Scottsdale show special? Seeing all our wonderful Arabian breeders and watching their horses show—such comradery!

Bob Hart … Champion Names that come to mind: Rohara Moon Storm and Magination V, Western Pleasure Open. What makes the Scottsdale show special? I’ve gone to the Scottsdale show since it moved from Bell Road, so at least 30 years in a row. It is special because it’s in Spring, it’s the first show of the year, and people who aren’t even showing come! It’s like a 3-ring circus with everything going on at once! It is very exciting to watch or come to as an exhibitor. A memorable Scottsdale moment for me was when my horse fell in the working cow horse class. I was disqualified and also broke my ankle. But that afternoon, I showed in western pleasure and won Reserve Champion! The announcer said, “Just think what you could have done if you had both legs!” Rohara Moon Storm

Roxann Hart … Champion Names that come to mind: • Favorite Champions: Aalusive Bey, youngest Scottsdale Champion mare ever at Scottsdale at the time and Reserve Champion Sequines EA at the same show • Western: Rohara Moon Storm • English: Tshannnon (English and Driving). Also, Good Thunder and Forthe Loveof Thunder • Yearling Filly: Rohara Americanlegend (Half-Arabian) and Rohara American Idol (Supreme Champion) • Blast from the Past: Rohara Tsultress, Junior Champion What makes the Scottsdale show special? It is the melting pot of our industry; the largest Arabian show in the world and is a contributor to the well-being of the Arabian Horse Marketplace—a mecca for our industry.

Rohara Americanlegend

Howard Kale … Champion Names that come to mind: • Khadraj NA (Stallions) • MHR Nobility and Napitok (Park) • Arius SS (Western) • Lasma’s mare, Fire Music, Gene rode in the 1970s, GTF Beetlejuice, and the bay stallion Baywatch V, ridden by Mike Whelihan (English)

A SCOT TSDALE MEMOIR

Gene LaCroix … Champion Names that come to mind: Bask winning Grand Champion Stallion, 1964. What makes the Scottsdale show special? Quality horses, the quantity of horses, the competition and great weather (usually!).

Walter Mishek … Champion Names that come to mind: • TJ's Georgie Girl showing in the championship against Wizja • Bask … Morafic … Naborr … Arn-Ett Perlane and El Shaklan • David Boggs showing Padron with his famous Roy Rogers rearing trick in the ring What makes the Scottsdale show special? In addition to meeting the great Wayne Newton and witnessing Peter Cameron judge a class of 100+ and keeping everyone entertained with never knowing who would be first, Scottsdale is the beginning of the year’s show and breeding season, fulfilling three exciting expectations. First, reconnecting with friends under the warmth of the Arizona sun is pure nirvana! For me, in the 60s and early 70s, I went from the plane to Coco's for a famous teriyaki hamburger and then I was off to the showgrounds. Second, seeing all the great horses in person that I previewed beforehand in Arabian Horse Times, of course! And from there, sharing the thrill of it all with friends once back home again and planning the breeding to that stallion that you now can’t forget. Finally, the auctions, especially Lasma (where you had your banker lie about your net worth so that you could get a seat)! Predictions were made on what horse might set the new public auction price, and everyone was decked out like a million bucks. And the entertainment! Would Danny Grossman again be dancing in the aisles to the famous singers and entertainment? Of course, the sale could not begin until Tom Chauncey was seated; that was the signal for the fun and auction to begin. Dick Ames and Paul Emerson always tag teamed to create the new gossip and played practical jokes on everyone around, so all were always aware, or you could be involved in some memories one never forgets! Remember the Beach Boys and everyone went nuts? It was the first time entertainment was used before the auction to warm everyone up which was invented by the historic and magic of Gene LaCroix. And remember when the auction hit one million dollars in sales and not only did the lucky purchaser buy the horse, but received a free new Cadillac driven on stage! People went crazy for Gene LaCroix's amazing theatrics and marketing skills to bring the industry to new heights. Scottsdale was and is still today, magical. It is a place where the history of much of the Arabian breed is written and memories with friends live on forever.

John Rannenberg …

Aalusive Bey

Champion Names that come to mind: • Western: Rohara Moon Storm with Bob Hart, who I later rode to National Champion Western Pleasure Jr. Horse and enjoyed watching Bob take him to the top in the Open division. Gifted, beautiful and a natural athlete. • English: Canadian Love and Good Thunder. Two very important stallions to me and my career. Canadian Love was my first big winner at Scottsdale in English Pleasure winning in 1987 and 1988 with a follow-up of U.S. National Champion in 1988. Good Thunder was always a favorite at Scottsdale in English Pleasure, Pleasure Driving, Informal Combination, Native Costume and Roadster to Bike! • Park: Reign On and Allison Elwell from Cal Poly, way back at Paradise Park on Bell Road. He made a huge impact on me, as well as on many others who saw him. What an exciting performance! I can still see him in my mind, a shimmering silver stallion who commanded the arena and seemed to be trotting on air. • Halter Filly: Aalusive Bey was the first 2-year-old in Scottsdale history to win both Jr. Champion and Grand Champion mare in the same year. She then went on as a 3-year-old to win U.S. National Champion Mare. What makes the Scottsdale show special? Scottsdale is a very special city and a horse show like no other. My first Scottsdale show was in 1979 and hallmarked the beginning of my career. For a young kid from the Midwest, I was in heaven and in awe of the Arabian horse industry. Every year that I go back, I am reminded of all the great times I've experienced with incredible horses and people, as well as some hardships, too. Scottsdale will always be special to me and I feel good inside when I'm there.

Tim Shea … Champion Names that come to mind: For me personally, To Love Again’s English Pleasure Championship win and Ericca winning the Junior English Pleasure Championship at her first show; both beautiful grey mares owned by Strawberry Banks Farm. Ericca went on to be National Champion Junior English later that year and was National Champion Halter Mare the year after. Another year I won the English Pleasure Championship with The Nobelest, and Park Horse Champion with Going My Way.

The Nobelest

Last year was a favorite year, watching Joel Kiesner show the great Heirs Noble Love to English Pleasure Champion, and Coltrane to Champion Park Horse; both of which went on to become the U.S National Champions of their respective divisions last year.

A SCOT TSDALE MEMOIR What makes the Scottsdale show special? Watching many legends of the breed over the years, several of which will be their debut show. Also, the weather (a beautiful horse show in the sun), the improvements made to the whole production with the indoor coliseum, and the great attendance by tourists and the local community to the show. It’s the only show where you have stands filled for performances.

Scott Trees … Champion Names that come to mind: Bask with Gene LaCroix. What makes the Scottsdale show special? I have been going to the Scottsdale show since the Paradise Park days and have always enjoyed the aspect of escaping the winter to see old friends and great horses. It’s the kick-off show of the season and always seems to set the stage in terms of what horses to look for during the remainder of the year.

Mike Whelihan … Champion Names that come to mind: Muscat, Stallion Halter. What makes the Scottsdale show special? The atmosphere, the number of spectators and the weather!
