TIM WILLIAMS & DR. CINDY HILDEBRAND Round Barn Ranch
Who or what event caused you to try reining? Tim: There
is a lot more skill involved in the event; I’m not sure why more people aren’t trying it. Cindy: I had reining horses as a youth in 4-H and open shows. I always loved the event and saw the opportunity when I started riding Arabs back in 2009. I find it challenging and fun!
What was your first successful experience like? Tim: I beat
my wife in the qualifying show the day before regionals in Lexington, KY. Cindy: I started showing Arabs long before Tim, but my first big success was beating Tim the next day at the Regional event in Lexington, KY! He may have won the pre-show, but I ended up Regional Champion (Tim was Reserve Champion). It was a fun weekend!
What makes Arabians/Half-Arabians good at reining and/or stand out versus other breeds in this discipline? Tim: We have been tutored by
some great folks and had some great horses. Cindy: I think the versatility of the Arabian makes many of them good reiners. Most of our reining horses do more than reining; they are expected to be family horses, ranch horses, and because they are considered to be well-broke horses, they do pretty much what we ask of them. That is what makes them a standout.
What sets reining apart from other disciplines? Tim: Difficulty, skill, and a very trainable horse. Cindy: The mindset of the horse. They have to be trainable, athletic, willing, and versatile. Reining is also a fun spectator sport. At least it is when our horses are in the pen! We love to “hoot and holler” and cheer on our horses and riders. What are some reasons you would encourage a beginner rider to start with reining? What would be your reasons for a seasoned rider to give reining a try? Tim: If you can rein, you can do all the other disciplines, so I think it’s a good place to start. As far as seasoned riders, it would just make them that much better at their preferred discipline. Cindy: Beginner riders learn a lot about piloting a horse, not just sitting on a horse. They have to learn about steering, cueing, stopping, memorizing a pattern, watching for markers, rating speed, and “showing” their horse. There is no perching on a reining horse! Seasoned riders I think get more of an appreciation for a well -trained horse and for how fun the sport is.
Why is the Scottsdale show the perfect opportunity to learn more about the reining discipline? Tim: It provides you
with all the best competitors and horses in the nation. Anyone that is ready to compete, even on a young horse will be there. This is where you will see the best riders and best horses. Cindy: Scottsdale is the beginning of the show season for us. I always look at my young horses as in “who will be ready for Scottsdale?” There is nothing like Scottsdale, competing or not.
What reining classes are you competing in at Scottsdale this year? We normally have something in the futurity, but this is a gap year for us; no youngsters are ready.
What do you think could be done by the AHA to better promote reining? Cindy: I would like to see something
similar to the big money programs like the western pleasure and English pleasure events. Money draws participation. I also have always wanted to see the payouts be equal in the Half-Arabian and purebred events.

KEN & CONNIE WALLING Rock Hill Land & Livestock
Who or what event caused you to try reining? We, my husband
and I, decided to try reining because I bred what we considered to be a good prospect. We bought two nice Arabian mares from Miller Arabians, one of which I successfully showed in cow horse, and the other mare I bought a breeding to Hesa Zee for from a reining horse auction. Her first foal, E Zee Slider+, at a very young age wanted to sweep around with a naturally low head, so we decided to give him a shot at reining. He was started by Laird McCabe, then sent to Nathan Kent for his reining training.
What was your first successful experience like? Our first experience showing him was in Scottsdale in the 2019 Reining Futurity. He was RCH 4D, so a thrilling success for us. He also earned RCH in the Reining Futurity and Jr. Horse at U.S. Nationals, and in 2020, he won both! I never in my dreams ever thought I was going to win the big Scottsdale Futurity, and then he went on to win two National Championship reining titles! E Zee Slider+ became my dream come true. Nathan Kent and Company made him what he is today, and I am ever so grateful. What makes Arabians/Half-Arabians good at reining and/ or stand out versus other breeds in this discipline? As it is true
for all breeds and any discipline, I believe you must breed proven bloodlines and proven performers to produce a decent reiner. The Arabian breed is still finding their way, which is why I relied on Miller-bred Arabians to produce my reining horse stallion; they have a lot of years of proven bloodlines, and I have crossed my cow horse mare twice to TA Mozart for the same reason. She is in foal this year to E Zee Slider who will be the result of triple-bred Miller bloodlines. I also used my Khemosabi son, Khomputer (who we lost last year at age 29), on both mares and had very nice horses.
What sets reining apart from other disciplines? Reining requires a very athletic individual with the correct mind set. Not every athletic horse can be a reiner. Trainability, keeping the horse sound and happy, a powerful back end, and soundness are all a must. What are some reasons you would encourage a beginner rider to start with reining? What would be your reasons for a seasoned rider to give reining a try? If you are interested and have the bug, then just do it!
NATHAN KENT
Kent Performance Horses Who or what event caused you to try reining? Growing up I had always ridden and rodeoed in high school. While I was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, my brother, Preston Kent, took an interest in reining. When I returned, he got me a job with a local reining trainer and that’s where it started.
What was your first successful experience like? They were special because they were on horses that my dad bred and raised. It’s very rewarding when you can see the success of a program that you’ve been a part of succeed. What makes Arabians/Half-Arabians good at reining and/or stand out versus other breeds in this discipline? Arabians are very versatile; they can be exceptional
athletes. A lot of Arabians want to please you and have a lot of try which helps them in reining which is not an easy sport.
Why is the Scottsdale show the perfect opportunity to learn more about the reining discipline? There are a ton of classes and lovely
What sets reining apart from other disciplines? Reining is hard. It takes a lot
Side note: I am very pleased to see performance halter added to our shows. Performance and conformation both are important. I am not sure how my little cow horse bred stallion will show against big, reachy English horses, but to support the breed, we are giving it a shot. This too, shall probably evolve. I just know how sound and correct my horse is, and if people are looking for a breeding stallion to get a performing horse, he is the total package.

of timing and feel. It also takes a lot of time to train a reiner. Because of this, it’s so rewarding when things come together in the show pen.
Reining will most certainly make you a better and more confident rider. Whether you’re just a beginner or a seasoned rider, there is always more to learn. Reining has a spot for everyone to succeed.
Why is the Scottsdale show the perfect opportunity to learn more about the reining discipline? It is one of the most prestigious shows. Many of the top riders in
Nathan Kent will show E Zee Slider+ in the Arabian Maturity and Open Reining, Ranch Horse, Reined Cow Horse, and Performance Halter. He placed a very respectable 3rd place at U.S. Nationals in his first ranch riding class ever. I am excited to see how he does.

LARA AMES
Cedar Ridge Arabians Who or what event caused you to try reining? Breeding beautiful reiners was one of my dad’s passions, and I wanted to carry it on!
What makes Arabians/Half-Arabians good at reining and/or stand out versus other breeds in this discipline? What stands out to me is
not only how athletic they are, but also how beautiful. They also always give 110%, because Arabians are all heart!
What sets reining apart from other disciplines? Its difficulty and the
precision required in a scored event.
What are some reasons you would encourage a beginner rider to start with reining? What would be your reasons for a seasoned rider to give reining a try? For a beginner, it would be to establish a
confident and centered seat, making it easy to move to other disciplines; and for the seasoned rider, it’s fun to try something new and so different to be judged based on scores rather than comparison.
Why is the Scottsdale show the perfect opportunity to learn more about the reining discipline? You can watch all the different skill and age levels. From short stirrup reining to the NRHA Reining Futurity classes, there are
quality horses in every division.
What reining classes are you competing in at Scottsdale this year? We have two homebred horses competing in the Arabian Reining Futurity; both sired by
TA Mozart.
GAIL & ABBY JENSEN Jensen Arabians LLC
Who or what event caused you to try reining? When Abby was a
little girl, she began showing at small local Arab shows. There were no reining classes, but gymkhana classes of all sorts. She took our Half-Arab mare Belle and entered many classes! In those days, at the Class A level, there were no amateur or youth classes; the 10-year-olds competed with the 40-year-old trainers! Such fun times those small local shows were. Always helpful folks for new exhibitors and always a potluck supper!
What was your first successful experience like? We’ve had success from the beginning. We’ve met many new friends and learned about the Arabian and how to enjoy showing horses. Our first success at the National level was a top ten with our first real reiner, a 3-year-old we purchased from Jack Peak. PK Fortune Hunter became a great reiner and an even better reined cow horse. He won his last Regional championship at the age of 23! Then went on after retirement to become a stellar equine therapy horse. He died at the age of 33, after completing a summer of equine therapy. What makes Arabians/Half-Arabians good at reining and/or stand out versus other breeds in this discipline? Their exceptional athletic abilities and intelligence.
What sets reining apart from other disciplines? Performing one horse at a time. The people—trainers, owners, riders—are all so friendly and helpful … “Really good peeps,” as Abby would say! What are some reasons you would encourage a beginner rider to start with reining? What would be your reasons for a seasoned rider to give reining a try? Reiners as lesson horses are perfect for the beginning rider; in tune with their rider as well as trainer or coach. They will take care of the beginning student. A seasoned show person might enjoy the change of pace of reining, as well as the mental aspect. Why is the Scottsdale show the perfect opportunity to learn more about the reining discipline? Scottsdale has more reining classes than any other Arabian show. You can go to the reining arena anytime and see some of the best reiners in the country. It is a fun discipline to watch!
What reining classes are you competing in at Scottsdale this year? Futurity, Half-Arabian Open, Half-Arabian AAOTR and AATR. What do you think could be done by the AHA to better promote reining? They seem to be doing a pretty good job, as well as our Arabian Reining Horse Association. Scottsdale is awesome! And having our own show pen at Scottsdale and Nationals is very helpful!
