Four-year-old, bay, home-bred stallion LMB Khold Hard Khash is proving to be a splendid scion for his sire, multi-champion western pleasure icon Khash PGA.
Cover story by CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI
With the proven paternal bloodlines of Khadraj NA+++/ and his dam, PGN Kailicia’s Khemosabi and Varian bloodlines, Khold Hard Khash’s destiny with success seemed set from the beginning. Debuting in just three shows in 2021, he is quickly proving himself to be a western pleasure superstar, and owner/ breeder, Laurie Martin, couldn’t be prouder. A longtime breeder, renowned trainer, and lover of all things involving Arabian horses, Laurie believes she’s won the breeder’s jackpot, but getting there wasn’t easy. There’s a reason for “Junior” being aptly named Khold Hard Khash, as Laurie firmly puts it, “It took cold, hard cash to make him happen!” Being a highly knowledgeable student of bloodlines, Laurie felt certain that if she could breed her aged mare, PGN Kailicia, to her (then) stallion, Khash PGA, the result could be his sire’s successor to carry forward his inimitable western pleasure career and birthright. But achieving this special blend of bloodlines would take some real doing. Laurie explains, “Simply put, it took the very best equine veterinary and breeding specialists to obtain the embryo that became Junior. At the time, Kailicia was 22. A risk at any age for any horse, much less an aged mare, an embryo was delicately extracted and put in the careful hands of our breeding specialist Jerry Longworth. Though not considered robust, the embryo was implanted into our recipient mare and we hoped for the best.” Unfortunately, challenges continued to arise. The recipient mare colicked mid-term, resulting in an emergency surgery, and once again, three months before foaling. But upon viewing the ultra-sound and seeing a healthy, gorgeous ‘boy,’ the personal turmoil and expense was worth the risk of a second and successful surgery. Laurie pays tribute, “Chapparal Medical Clinic and Jerry Longworth, DVM of Scottsdale Equine Services are second to none!” Ar abian Horse Times | 4 | A.W.P.A Futurity
Months later, when Khold Hard Khash hit the ground, Laurie was instantly gratified, exclaiming, “Here’s our payback for this breeding journey’s investment of cold, hard cash! We have our western pleasure superstar.” Junior spent his early years with Laurie and life partner Mike Brock, at their ranch in North Scottsdale, growing up and enjoying an easy life. Laurie started him in his third year, sending him to trainer Brett Becker in late 2020. Becker affirms, “Khold Hard Khash is very typical of Khash babies, who stamps on his progeny a laid back, sweet attitude, fluid movement, a round body, tiny ears and huge, kind eyes. His babies tend to mirror him.” Becker continues, “All of this adds up to the ideal Western Pleasure horse, blessed with natural attributes, making them easy to train. Khold Hard Khash’s first time loping with me was 10 1/2 out of 10. As a trainer, I was thrilled to have this fledgling superstar in my care. “With just a few months’ training, Khold Hard Khash was ready for his show debut. We competed at the May Diablo Arabian show in nearby Sacramento, winning our classes. We then went on to Region 3 in July, again winning the Junior Horse championship. At this point, we felt confident he was a formidable contender for the AWPA championship at U.S. Nationals in Tulsa. And Junior gave it his all.” Proving his ancestry and Laurie’s genius of crossing the right lines to make a perfect match, the stunning, nearly black-bay stallion took home the championship roses in the AWPA $100,000 Western Pleasure Futurity. Junior now has a bright future. Laurie chuckles, “We want to continue having fun with this amazing, young stallion. I mean, what could be more fun than witnessing Brett’s glee at being awarded the AWPA champion prize scooter? She continues, “We will take 2022 one show at a time and then assess what next steps to take. Named at birth for big money spent, love, and lots of hope, Khold Hard Khash is truly the cherry on top of a very delicious cake.”

Ever grateful and feeling blessed for enjoying a lifetime of Arabian horses as an Amateur, a top professional trainer, judge and breeder, Laurie shares, “My life as a professional trainer is winding down, and suffice to say, my shingle is no longer out, but Mike’s and my Arabian horse journey continues. I was so fortunate to own Khash and was thrilled when we sold him last fall to Corinne and Meghan Gudgeon, a wonderful family. We are gratified to know they are loving, enjoying, and appreciating Khash as much as we do, and hope they truly revere him, as we know Khold Hard Khash to be, a one-in-a-million stallion.” n Ar abian Horse Times | 5 | A.W.P.A Futurity

AWPA STALLION SERVICE AUCTION MARCH 4TH-8TH
Ninety-four stallions are enrolled with the AWPA for 2022, with many offering both Purebred and Half-Arabian breedings in the March Auction. See who is the best match for your mare at arabianwesternpleasure.com!
WHY BUY AN AUCTION BREEDING? • 50% of the Stallion Nomination payments are reserved for that breeding year’s Auction foal crop to have as bonus prize money in the Futurity Finals! • Each year, the Auction bonus prize money divided between the Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurities will be determined by the number of breedings offered. • Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money: In-Utero Year Enrolled 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022
Futurity Additional Year Showing Purebred Money 2022 $24,940 2023 $29,700 2024 $28,710 2025 $29,290 2026 $27,440 2027 $27,260
Additional HalfArabian Money $18,060 $19,800 $20,790 $21,210 $21,560 $19,740
• The added money will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals -- no matter the placing in the class. - For example, in the 2025 Purebred Finals, if all entries are AWPA Auction foals, the Top 14 will each receive an additional $2,092.14 in prize money [$29,290 split 14 ways]. - Likewise, if 3 of the 14 finalists in the 2024 Half-Arabian Finals are AWPA Auction foals, they will each receive an additional $6,930.00 in prize money [$20,790 split 3 ways]! Don’t miss this incredible opportunity in March to have a foal be eligible for significantly more prize money than any other Futurity program!

AWPA RULES & REGULATIONS ENROLLING YOUR STALLION
Stallions may be enrolled annually for the fee of $1,000 by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. For example, to have a stallion enrolled for the 2023 year, the paperwork and payment must be submitted by December 1, 2022. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA Stallion Service Auction. A stallion owner may choose to donate two (2) breedings, one Purebred and one Half-Arabian, for their $1,000 nomination fee. • Whether the owner donates one or two breedings, the nomination fee remains at $1,000.00. • In order for both Purebred and Half-Arabian foals of the nominated stallion to be eligible to compete in the corresponding classes, the stallion must be entered in BOTH auctions.
• Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money that will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals – no matter the placing in the class. • The amount of prize money offered each year will be published in the annual stallion brochure. Stallion owners receive one ‘Auction’ breeding with their nomination. This breeding can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the Stallion owner to anyone the stallion owner chooses and for any fee the stallion owner chooses. An in-utero Mare Nomination must be submitted by December 31st with payment of $100. For every three (3) stallions one stallion owner nominates, they will receive a fourth stallion nomination at no charge.
• The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated Stallions who sire the Champions in the 2022 AWPA Purebred and breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000. Half-Arabian Futurity classes will receive a 2023 stallion enrollment at no charge.
MARE NOMINATION
In order for foals sired by an AWPA nominated stallion to be eligible to participate in the Futurity and Maturity classes, they must be nominated in-utero by submitting a Mare Nomination Form. Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year for a $100 fee. December 31, 2022, for this year. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
Any mare that has been bred to an AWPA enrolled stallion can be nominated. However, the stallion must have been enrolled in the type of class the foal would compete in. For instance, if a stallion only offers a Purebred breeding in the program, then Half-Arabian foals would not be eligible, and Mare Nominations would not be accepted. The breeding does not have to be purchased in the AWPA Stallion Service Auction.
