WELCOME TO THE ARABIAN WESTERN PLEASURE ASSOCIATION
The AWPA is thrilled to be involved in promoting this incredible group of stallions, breeders, trainers, owners and young horses. There are 98 stallions enrolled this year … the sixth year in a row to have over 90 stallions nominated! We are so appreciative of each stallion owner who has supported the AWPA. This program is successful thanks to you and the committed mare owners who continue to breed and produce tremendous Western Pleasure prospects.
The 2023 AWPA Stallion Service Auction will be online through the Arabian Horse Times website March 3rd – 7th. Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction will be eligible for an additional $49,000 in prize money in the 2028 Futurities.
As we look back on 2022, we are proud to report that the four AWPA classes had a record number of entries. In particular, the AWPA Maturity classes had some of the largest entries for Western classes at Mid-Summer. The purebred class had a cut for the first time! Congratulations to all the amateur owners who handled the heat well and took home prize money in those tough classes.
The U.S. National AWPA Futurities were once again must-see classes at the show! The quality of the entries is outstanding every year. Both Champions were dominant, winning by over 30 points, which is very difficult to do with a 5-judge panel. Congratulations to all competitors.
The program paid out over $273,000 in 2022 and will award even more money this year! Of particular note was the increase to the owners of stallions who sired entries who showed—over $20,000 was awarded to them.
The Auction Foal Bonus Payout was also significant. The Futurity entries in the Top 14 who were the result of breedings purchased in the 2017 Stallion Service Auction were given a split of the $43,000 reserved monies -- $3,562.86 to each of the five Purebred Auction foals and $2,257.50 to each of the eight Half-Arabian Auction foals.
We could not offer the Futurities & Maturities without the partnership of Arabian Horse Times and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services. A big THANK YOU to them and to all our sponsors who make these classes so special:
ASSOCIATION SPONORS:
We look forward to another incredible year!

PA FRONTIER KID:
A couple years ago, longtime Arabian horse owners Paige and Brian Whittecar were on the hunt to locate that next great young western pleasure prospect. Joined up with tip-top western pleasure trainer Joe Reser, all were confident their search would reap results.
Brian recollects, “We heard about a coming 2-yearold Sundance Kid V colt Frank Chisholm had bred out of his mare French Kisses, purchased by his mother’s side by Elizabeth O’Briant, herself an accomplished breeder. Joe and I were intrigued.”
Brian and Joe boarded a plane bound for North Carolina and Elizabeth’s farm, primed to meet for themselves, the impeccably bred, long legged, smooth gaited bay colt.
Upon their arrival, Joe and Brian’s introduction to the 2017 bay stallion PA Frontier Kid was at his stall … a stall boarded up with a nailed-in 2 x 4!
“Elizabeth calmly told us PA Frontier Kid was a true magician,” Joe chuckles, “and that nailing a 2 x 4 across his stall door was the best way to keep him inside. She then picked up a nearby hammer and expertly removed the board. PA Frontier Kid strutted out of his stall practically telling us, ‘I’m the man!’”
by CATHERINECOLE FERANDELLI
~Joe Reser
“We were confident that 2022, his last year as a Junior horse, would be a good one”
The young stallion and the 2 x 4, a unique situation at best, put Joe in a short-lived quandary. Would this alluring, athletically blessed young stallion have the mindset necessary for western pleasure?
Two actions quickly doused his concern. “Straightaway, Brian was 1,000% sold on PA Frontier Kid, telling me, ‘Let’s do this!’” Joe laughs. “Next, my ‘gut’ kicked in, telling me that as sure as we didn’t buy this horse, someone else would. Someone who would send PA Frontier Kid to a competing top trainer. I could picture it … PA Frontier Kid and his trainer beating me in the show pen. We just couldn’t let that happen.”
The sale was made, and with the new barn name of “Pancho”, was delivered to Paige, Brian and Joe at the 2019 U.S. Nationals. Pancho’s new home was Shamrock Farms LLC, just outside Fort Worth. He settled in, taking to Joe’s training with intelligent enthusiasm, enjoying his frequent turn outs in spacious pastures.
Primed and ready for the 2020 U.S. Nationals Western Pleasure Futurity, Pancho won 4th Place overall in a field of 32 three-year-olds. Next beaconed 2021 and the coveted U.S. Nationals $100,000 AWPA Western Pleasure Futurity Championship. Pancho and Joe showed only one time prior to October’s U.S. Nationals, “He was dialed in, ready to show off his stuff,” says Joe. Winning the Reserve Champion AWPA Western Pleasure title was a thrill for all.
Still growing into his tall, long-legged frame, Pancho was filling out even more, and his ever increasing work ethic was now an equal match for his incredible self-confidence. “We were confident that 2022, his last year as a Junior horse, would be a good one,” Joe says. And triumph prevailed with both reaping the 2022 U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse red roses.
Brian and Paige couldn’t be more ecstatic about Pancho, both in the show pen and as a breeding stallion, who will create his own legacy as a game changing producer of top quality progeny.
“Pancho is Paige and my first venture owning, marketing and breeding a top stallion,” Brian shares. “He is among the younger generation of Sundance Kid V sons on the ground. We hope to see his iconic sire and his dam’s beauty and athletic talent combined in him to further elevate Arabian Western Pleasure horse quality, type and talent.”
He adds, “Pancho has two babies scheduled for 2023 delivery, plus huge interest in bookings this year for 2024 foals. We’re just as committed to his show career as we are to his influencing the Arabian horse as a game changing breeding stallion.”
Joe agrees, “For 2023, I’ll be showing Pancho at Scottsdale, U.S. Nationals and maybe one other show. He’s ready to show his stuff in the bridle; his attitude tells us ‘Yep, I’m here, ready to walk that red carpet.’”
“Every day with Pancho is a new adventure,” Joe concludes. “He’ll tell you when he needs a play day, then the next day he gets right down to business.” And in the show pen? “He lives for those bright lights shining down on him!”
“We hope to see his iconic sire and his dam’s beauty and athletic talent combined in him to further elevate Arabian Western Pleasure horse quality, type and talent.”
~Brian Whittecar
The AWPA has 98 enrolled stallions for 2023, with many offering both Purebred and Half-Arabian breedings in the March Auction. See who is the best match for your mare at arabianwesternpleasure.com!
WHY BUY AN AUCTION BREEDING?
• 50% of the Stallion Nomination payments are reserved for that breeding year’s Auction foal crop to have as bonus prize money in the Futurity Finals!
• Each year, the percentage of the Auction bonus prize money divided between the Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurities will be determined by the number of breedings offered.
• Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money:
• The added money will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals -- no matter the placing in the class.
• For example, in the 2025 Purebred Finals, if all entries are AWPA Auction foals, the Top 14 will each receive an additional $2,092.14 in prize money [$29,290 split 14 ways].
• Likewise, if 3 of the 14 finalists in the 2024 Half-Arabian Finals are AWPA Auction foals, they will each receive an additional $6,930.00 in prize money [$20,790 split 3 ways]!

AWPA RULES & REGULATIONS
ENROLLING YOUR STALLION
Stallions may be enrolled annually for the fee of $1,000 by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. For example, to have a stallion enrolled for the 2023 year, the paperwork and payment must be submitted by December 1, 2022. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA Stallion Service Auction. A stallion owner may choose to donate two (2) breedings, one Purebred and one Half-Arabian, for their $1,000 nomination fee.
• Whether the owner donates one or two breedings, the nomination fee remains at $1,000.00.
• In order for both purebred and Half-Arabian foals of the nominated stallion to be eligible to compete in the corresponding classes, the stallion must be entered in BOTH auctions.
• The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000.
MARE NOMINATION
In order for foals sired by an AWPA nominated stallion to be eligible to participate in the Futurity and Maturity classes, they must be nominated in-utero by submitting a Mare Nomination Form.
Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year for a $100 fee. December 31, 2023, for this year. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
ENTRIES
The ONLY four-year-olds allowed to compete in the U.S. National AWPA Futurities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year. • Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on arabianwesternpleasure.com, and shows which breedings may result in eligible offspring.
The ONLY four and five-year-olds allowed to compete in the AWPA Maturities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.
CLASS GUIDELINES
The U.S. National AWPA Futurity classes are open to four-year-olds who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.
The AWPA Maturity classes are open to four and five-year-olds shown by an Adult Amateur Owner rider.
• They must have been nominated via an in-utero Mare Nomination by December 31st of their breeding year.
A five judge total points system will be used. Each Judges placing will be ranked and points applied according to the following table:
• Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money that will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals – no matter the placing in the class.
• The amount of prize money offered each year will be published in the annual stallion brochure.
Stallion owners receive one ‘Auction’ breeding with their nomination. This breeding can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the Stallion owner to anyone the stallion owner chooses and for any fee the stallion owner chooses. An in-utero Mare Nomination must be submitted by December 31st with payment of $100.
For every three (3) stallions one stallion owner nominates, they will receive a fourth stallion nomination at no charge.
Stallions who sire the Champions in the 2023 AWPA Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurity classes will receive a 2024 stallion enrollment at no charge.
Any mare that has been bred to an AWPA enrolled stallion can be nominated. However, the stallion must have been enrolled in the type of class the foal would compete in. For instance, if a stallion only offers a Purebred breeding in the program, then Half-Arabian foals would not be eligible, and Mare Nominations would not be accepted.
The breeding does not have to be purchased in the AWPA Stallion Service Auction.
An AWPA Class Entry Form must be submitted to the AWPA by the show entry deadline.
The form can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
The AWPA class entry fee is $700.
All other entry and office fees charged by National shows must be paid directly to the show.
Quality is the number one criterion for judging, followed by performance, suitability, and manners.
• A stallion or gelding showing with their penis substantially exposed (flaccid or erect) in any portion of the class, will be considered to have a major manner’s violation. Judges will be advised to score the horse so as not to receive a placing in the class.
AWPA RULES & REGULATIONS
Class eliminations will be run as a standard Western Pleasure Junior Horse class.
• Elimination cuts will not ask for horses to be stripped of tack, and the lineup will have all horses face one rail, side by side.
• Fourteen (14) horses total will advance to the final.
The Final will be run as a standard Western Pleasure Junior Horse class. Upon completion of the rail portion, horses will be called to line up head to tail.
• Two attendants per horse will be allowed into the arena to assist with removing saddles and pads. They are allowed to bring a saddle rack, towel, and brush.

FROM SHOW RING SUPERSTAR TO DAM OF EXCELLENCE
by COLLEEN SCOTTWhen a horse can carry multiple amateur, junior and open riders to national titles, well, that horse is something pretty special. When that same horse is also named a Dam of Excellence with just six offspring, she’s even more special. And so it is with Kheanne (Khadraj NA x TN Katiki, by Versace), bred by Julia Neufeld.
Brett Becker, who has had the mare since the end of her 3-year-old year (Gordon Potts started Kheanne and showed her to a U.S. National Top Ten in the Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity in 2011), says the fact that multiple people have been able to win national titles on Kheanne speaks to her talent and personality. “Everyone I’ve ever had ride her has won on her. She’s a horse that can win no matter who is sitting on her. That says a lot.”
Retiring after the 2022 U.S. Nationals, the beautiful bay mare went out on top, taking owner Nancy Maximuck to the Reserve Champion title in the Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 60 & Over class in a highly competitive field of 31 horses. It was a thrilling end to the pair’s 2022 show season, having also claimed two top ten awards at the Youth & Mid Summer National Championship Show and a Champion at Region 2. But it was their national ride in Tulsa that Nancy is particularly proud of.
“I still get choked up and have goosebumps when I think about it,” she says. “I don’t think that is something that will ever go away. It was just about a perfect class. I understood her. She understood what I wanted, and we just clicked.”
Nancy attributes much of her success in the ring to Brett. “He really looks at the way you ride and tailors what he is saying to every individual. Not every rider is the same, and he understands that. He also knows his horses really well. As long as you follow his directions, you’re going to do well.”
And do well they did, ever since 2017 when Nancy bought Kheanne. With a successful show career and the mare approaching 15, Nancy and Brett had discussed retiring her following the 2022 show season. Although Kheanne was still at the top of her game, they decided to stick with their original decision and focus on breeding.
“She’s already had some really beautiful babies,” says Nancy. “We’re expecting one this year by Sundance Kid V that we’re pretty excited about.”
Those beautiful babies have since led to Kheanne’s next achievement, this one outside of the show ring. Recently named an Arabian Horse Times 2022 Dam of Excellence by meeting four requirements: one, that she herself is a national champion, and the remaining three, producing one or more national champions (three), as well as two or more reserve national champions (three) among just six babies, proves herself to be an incredible dam.
Kheanne’s first offspring were the result of twin embryos that Brett flushed the same day. Both are by Sundance Kid V.
Pictured top to bottom:

On Demand (by Onyx A)
Kheanne’s first filly, Jasmine and Magnolia was born in 2016 and quickly followed in her dam’s show ring hoofprints, capturing three national championship titles in 2021. At U.S. Nationals, she was champion in both the purebred performance halter class and in the Western Pleasure Maturity out of a field of 38. At the Mid Summer National Championships, she earned champion in the AWPA $15,000 Maturity class. She followed that up at the 2022 U.S. Nationals with a reserve championship in performance halter and a top ten in the Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 19-39 class.
The second embryo, Bentayga, a stallion, arrived five days later, and has also had a successful show career. In 2021 he was named U.S. National Champion Western Pleasure Junior Horse out of 40, after earning reserve champion in the same class at Mid Summer Nationals. Prior to that, he proved his abilities with two national top ten titles as a Futurity horse.
The stallion On Demand (by Onyx A), born in 2018, took home the 2022 U.S. National top ten title in the Arabian Western Pleasure Maturity after winning the championship at Mid Summer Nationals in the Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse class.
“How many mares can you say have produced three national champions out of just six babies—not very many,” says Brett.
Kheanne’s other offspring include the mare Trulianna (by Trussardi), a regional winner in the Western Pleasure Junior Horse division; the stallion Just Mac (by Justin Mac V); and Khameroon (by Rodan LTD), a 2021 colt.
All but Just Mac, who is with Greg Harris, reside at Becker Stables, something Brett is excited about. “They are owned by different people but having them here and being able to watch them mature has been very rewarding.”
What’s next for Kheanne? Nancy says that besides continuing to use frozen embryos with recipient mares, they also hope the mare can carry a foal during her next cycle.
“We’re just thrilled she had such a tremendous go for her final show ring appearance and we are so excited about her future. She is truly one of a kind,” Nancy says.
Brett concurs, and not just because of her successful show career and highly-performing offspring. “Kheanne has a great personality and is really a wonderful horse to be around.”
