Arabian Horse Celebration
September 19-22, 2012 by Linda White
Returning To Freedom Hall Arabians are coming back to Freedom Hall! The inaugural Arabian Horse Celebration is about to open its doors, and the excitement is building. Arabian horse breeders, trainers, exhibitors and people everywhere who just plain love Arabian horses can barely contain their enthusiasm. From 1976 through 2006, the U.S. National Championship Show was held in Freedom Hall, which is, for horse people, a place like no other. The Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center’s huge coliseum sings out with memories of fabulous horses, people, and events.st “Riding down that ramp in Freedom Hall is the most thrilling experience in the world,” says trainer Bob Battaglia, who knows. He has made the trip many times. “Louisville is such a great place to have a horse show: the sky boxes, the stalls so close to the action, the shopping expo, the wonderful restaurants and all the things to see and do beyond the horse show make coming back to Louisville an exciting prospect. We are bringing all kinds of Arabian horse people together; a new group of people has also become involved. “Our mission with the Arabian Horse Celebration is to promote the Arabian horse in a new light, and to share the richness the Arabian horse has brought to our lives. I think that has been one of the most gratifying aspects of putting this show together.” The Arabian Horse Celebration is AHA and USEF sanctioned. “A horse show should never be all work and no play,” Battaglia adds. “We want to share the fun and satisfaction of being involved with the Arabian horse. We’ll have a Starting Gate Party at Churchill Downs on Tuesday, September 18, the evening before the show begins. Churchill Downs is probably Louisville’s most famous landmark, but all too often, when the show was here 126 | Ar abian Horse Times
before, many of us never got off the fairgrounds to explore the city itself. Churchill Downs will be a new adventure for many Arabian people. The Arabian Horse Celebration will also be a great venue for learning more about these horses.” Kelly Charpentier agrees. “Educating people about the Arabian horse is a high priority for everyone involved with this show.” No classes are scheduled Thursday and Friday afternoons, which will allow people to take advantage of a full slate of demonstrations and seminars given by some of the Arabian industry’s foremost authorities in various fields. Demonstrations will begin Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Freedom Hall. Scott Benjamin will explore some of the disciplines associated with the Arabian horse, its origin and uses. Following Benjamin will be Michael Byatt, who will discuss conformation and judging. At 3 p.m. Vicki Humphrey and Chris Culbreth will present an English and western seminar and demonstration that explores the two disciplines’ similarities and differences. A question-andanswer session with the panel of four speakers will conclude Thursday afternoon’s schedule. Friday afternoon’s educational offerings also will begin at 1 p.m. in Freedom Hall. Bob Battaglia will lead the day’s discussion, and offer insights into setting goals and selecting the right Arabian horse for you. At 2 p.m. Martha Murdock, Kathy Smoke and Lynn Ashby, respectively, will talk about endurance riding, dressage and racing. Stacey Giere will discuss and demonstrate her specialty, carriage driving, at 3 p.m., and a question-and-answer session with Friday’s panel of experts will begin at 4 p.m. Seminars in the commercial exhibits hall will get started on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Markel Insurance representatives’ discussion of farm safety and tips about your own and your horse’s maintenance. Information about the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund will also be available. At 2 p.m. Laura Harris D.V.M. will discuss “Keeping Them Healthy Costs Less.” On Thursday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m., a U.S. Equestrian Federation representative will answer the question, “Why Be a Member?” On Friday, also at 10 a.m., in the commercial exhibits hall, photographer Scott Trees will talk about, “Because of
Horses: Lessons Lived, Lessons Learned.” Saturday begins with a 10 a.m. discussion of “Medical Advancements and Technology in Breeding,” by Dr. Mario Zerlotti, a noted equine reproduction specialist. At 2 p.m. Raul J. Bras D.V.M., C.J.F., from Lexington’s Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, will provide a practical approach to understanding laminitis and rehabilitating the laminitic horse. The Purebred Arabian Trust is sponsoring all the event’s educational offerings. Saturday is filled with seminars, workshops, and youth activities. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, pre-school and elementary school children will meet at Freedom Hall’s front entrance for “Horse Story Time” with a children’s Volume 43, No. 3 | 127
materials, but more importantly, they will take home memories of a spectacular day spent with the Arabian horse. Charpentier recommends an RSVP to Laurie at (480) 5778762 by Monday, Sept. 17. “Other times are available, upon request, for groups of 10 or more,” she adds.
books author. They then will learn how to draw and paint horses in an interactive art lesson with an accomplished artist. Pre-schoolers and grade-schoolers will learn to create and name their very own stick horses, using a variety of materials—and show off their stick horse creations in their very own horse show! Next, kids can join in the fun with demonstrations of horses getting a bath and being groomed, and they can learn how to be safe around horses. An ice cream social follows. From 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. middle- and high-schoolers will gather at Freedom Hall’s front entrance to hear excerpts from and recommendations about teen literature. They will learn artistic techniques from accomplished artists, and create their own masterpieces in various art media, including photography and videography. A demonstration and clinic with an equine veterinary practitioner comes next, followed by a second ice cream social. (Do these Arabian Horse Celebration folks know how to throw a party, or what?) Young people will get to keep their works of art, stick horses and educational 128 | Ar abian Horse Times
Board member Ed Horton is thrilled with the possibilities. “I’m most excited about Louisville’s ambience. This is a chance to revisit what we were, and our Louisville history in years past. There was so much participation; the stands used to be packed with people enjoying the show! My hope is that the Arabian Horse Celebration will start drawing people in, both new people and people who will come back to the Arabian horse.” Celebration Board member Kim Jarvis heads the charities committee. “We have made arrangements with the Jockeys Guild to have jockeys as celebrities at the Starting Gate Party,” she notes enthusiastically. “One of the celebrity jockeys will be Pat Day! “As Bob mentioned, wearing colorful hats has become a ladies’ Kentucky Derby tradition. At Tuesday evening’s party we will be auctioning off a beautiful Derby hat and a oneof-a-kind belt buckle. The one-of-a-kind, handmade hat was donated by international hat designer and Kentucky resident Polly Singer. The custom belt buckle was made by
Lonestar Silversmiths. The auction proceeds will go to our charity, Angel Heart Farm.” Jarvis has been working with a charities specialist to provide the show’s Board of Directors with the information necessary to ally the Celebration with a local charity that gives something back to the Arabian horse community, rather than one of the huge, faceless international charities where donors seldom, if ever, get to see their gifts at work. “Angel Heart Farm was established by Tracy Kujawa, a threetime cancer survivor and Arabian horse owner and exhibitor,” she explains. “That is why the program chose to use Arabian horses to change the lives of chronically ill children. The children cannot control their illnesses, but they can learn to ride a 1,000-pound Arabian horse, which is extremely empowering. And this means that in addition to making a difference in children’s lives, Angel Heart Farm is an ambassador for the Arabian breed. The Lexington, Ky.-based charity has helped grant nearly 150 children’s wishes. “Our biggest challenge is to make the inaugural Arabian Horse Celebration a financial success, while meaningfully supporting our charity. In addition to the money we raise, we will be doing things throughout the show to increase the public’s awareness of Angel Heart Farm.”
Bob Battaglia mentions another important inclusion. “The 1974, 1975 and 1976 Arabian Horse Fairs featured a Stallion Row, but not much has been done in the last 25 years,” he points out. “Well, we are bringing back Stallion Row. There will be stallion presentations at the Stallion Row stalls every day. Evening classes begin at 7 p.m. There will be cocktail parties and Stallion Row stallion presentations in the main ring on Friday and Saturday evenings at 6:30 p.m. We have a prestigious stallion roster because some of the Arabian horse industry’s most successful sires are participating; Terry Holmes is our Stallion Row chairperson.” Stallion Row stabling will be in the Freedom Hall’s North Wing, as will all commercial exhibitors and the Celebration Café. Show entries too will be stabled in the North Wing. Board member Mike Beethe is in charge of scheduling. Classes start at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Sept. 19. The four days’ AATR, AAOTR, ATD, ATR and JTR performance classes for exhibitors under 18, 18 to 35, 36 to 54, and 55 and Over speak to owners’ and exhibitors’ increasingly hands-on participation. Grand championship classes—every one ATR—for purebreds and Half-Arabians in western pleasure, hunter pleasure, country English and English pleasure, pleasure driving and country pleasure driving, begin Saturday morning at 8 a.m. A complete schedule of open stallion, mare, filly and colt or gelding halter classes for Arabians and Half-Arabians of every age will be on tap, as will a full schedule of open and junior horse classes and championships in western pleasure, hunter pleasure, country English and English pleasure, pleasure driving and country pleasure driving. See the Arabian Horse Celebration website, www.arabiancelebration. com, or call (480) 585-0739 for further information. Kentucky is uniquely suited to raising and displaying fine horseflesh, and in Louisville especially, the horse is king. For more than 200 years, horse people have been gathering in the old river city to compete, compare, collaborate, commiserate and celebrate race horses, show horses and personal and professional alliances. The inaugural Arabian Horse Celebration offers Arabian horse fanciers everywhere a unique opportunity to renew their acquaintances, enjoy the quintessential River City, and most of, all, to celebrate the Arabian horse. n Volume 43, No. 3 | 129
It is with great pride and pleasure that we welcome you to the first annual Arabian Horse Celebration and Shopping Expo. This event could never have happened without your support and vote of confidence. We are excited about the quality of horses you will see in the show ring. The thrilling competition will showcase some of the best Arabian show horses in the world. You will witness the diversity of the Arabian through various disciplines—classes such as halter, English, western, hunter and driving. You will also get to see both amateurs and professionals compete for the beautiful bronze trophy in each championship class. The education schedule is designed to promote our beloved Arabian to many newcomers and accomplished horse lovers. There will be demonstrations in Freedom Hall, seminars in the commercial exhibit area, and age appropriate youth workshops. Stallion Row will highlight some of the best breeding sires in our industry. There will be daily opportunities to see these genetic greats up close and personal. You can ask questions of their owners and learn about successful breeding programs. The Shopping Expo will display products and merchandise including some of the finest art, home décor, jewelry, clothing and, of course, the best selection of horse products from tack and equipment, to custom riding apparel. There is something for everyone! The Celebration Café will have a variety of delicious food in a comfortable and inviting setting. The festive, fun atmosphere of the Celebration will be felt from the skyboxes, to the stands, to the cocktail parties at Stallion Row. We hope this will be an Arabian experience like none other!
