Luciana Fasano of
Fazenda Floresta
I love this kiss is so special, especially when there is a mare right next to him. Elishahh and Luciana.
By BETH ELLEN HUNZIKER
Brazilian business woman, Luciana Fasano, has achieved unprecedented success in every venue she has chosen, including fashion and fabric design, interior design, building a luxury retail brand for her delicious chocolates, cakes and gelatos called LF By Lufasano, and establishing a world-class equine paradise exclusively for her national and international champion Arabian horses. Equally impressive, she accomplished all these remarkable achievements in record time. In just a few short years, Luciana has achieved far beyond that which many people work their entire life. With every new endeavor she creates, she uses her personal formula for success that she began to develop as a young girl and which has evolved over her lifetime. When Luciana is inspired by a thought or a vision, she researches diligently and quickly learns everything she can about the subject. As she studies, she forms a goal and a plan to achieve it. Then, when the time is right, she puts her plan into action with her formidable energy and determination of purpose. Her passion and heart inspire her actions, while her intuition, keen intellect, and laser-like focus guide her to fulfill every goal. Among the most notable aspects of each of her goals are: the creation of extraordinary beauty and the means to enhance other people’s lives. One of Luciana’s most successful ventures is her equine program for Arabian horses, which has brought international attention to Brazil from all corners of the world in recognition of her stellar achievements. Her program is small in comparison to the large herds at national stud farms in such countries as Poland, Russia, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and other countries with government supported programs. Instead, she collected a very small and very elite group of stallions, which she guided to some of the highest awards of success in show rings around the world. With each success, Luciana expanded her brand, which is recognized around the globe for its accomplished levels of quality, ingenuity, and unwavering excellence. In 2010, Luciana saw a very young colt—it was love at first sight. She was drawn to his extraordinary beauty and at once, believed that if properly guided, he had the potential to achieve true greatness. She took up the challenge and purchased the colt. His name is AAS-Elishahh. One week later, he was named United States National Supreme Champion Yearling Colt. AAS-Elishahh is the son of a National Champion and in the first four generations of his pedigree, almost every ancestor is an International, National or Reserve National Champion, or a National Champion producer. Luciana took a calculated risk and her reward was tremendous. AAS-Elishahh went on to earn the titles of 2011 U.S. National Champion Arabian Two-Year-Old Colt, Arabian Breeders World Cup Supreme Gold Champion Junior Colt, Breeders World Cup Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and Gold Champion in Holland. Within five years, a group of prized Arabian stallions was collected that rivaled those of royalty. This was something that went against the normal precepts of most established breeders. Yet, by following her heart and intuition, Luciana achieved unprecedented success, earning more than 17 International, National, and other highly prestigious titles. Each stallion became a champion in her hands. In achieving this tremendous success, she brought respect, recognition, golden trophies, and red champion roses home to Brazil. Royal Chocolates Throughout her global travels with her coveted Arabian stallions, Luciana has become one of Brazil’s greatest ambassadors. Royal families from the Middle East and Europe, presidents, governors, and highly successful business people around the world recognize her signature qualities: her unwavering commitment to excellence in every aspect of her life, her warm and gracious smile, her elegance and graceful demeanor, her kindness, and her genuine concern for the well-being of people everywhere. These qualities have become the Fazenda Floresta brand and they are the foundation for each of Luciana’s creations. Everywhere she goes, she is recognized for her elegance in fashion and décor. The hallmark of her home is her gracious hospitality and her personal touch, which elevates every aspect with intense beauty and incorporates minute details designed to delight the senses. The Fazenda Floresta brand and signature style was used when creating LF By Lufasano. The first concept store that offered customers amazing cakes, rich chocolates, and refreshing gelatos was an instant success and now there is tremendous interest from people wanting to have a partnership. All products are created following historic Italian traditions, yet utilizing modern approaches such as holistic wellness and environmentally conscious practices. Luciana shares her inspiration, “I am reaching back to my sweetest childhood memories. Growing up, it was always my family’s custom to have fresh, warm cakes everyday, along with incredible chocolates and delicious gelatos. Everyone knows the best gelatos come from Italy. Sharing this simple pleasure brought our family together.” Ar abian Horse Times | 5 | Br azil ~ 2018
A very special moment riding Eccentric Valentino, thought I was not so young anymore for this.
When Luciana feels something deeply in her heart, she commits to it 100 percent. When LF By Lufasano was established, a unique synergy and the opportunity to touch the lives of many people began. In essence, the business model follows the ancient wisdom, “Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach them to fish and you give them an occupation that will feed them for a lifetime.” By teaching others, jobs were created for people who otherwise would have little if any means to earn a living. Luciana’s passion is contagious. Now her employees enjoy making beautiful and delightful confections while providing for their families. They share her commitment to quality, and concern for personal health and the environment, by utilizing green practices; all products, which are gluten and lactose free, use pure and organic ingredients. In addition, indigenous fruits and ingredients that might otherwise be overlooked are used. As always, she does not copy the trends, she sets the standards for herself and others to follow. Luciana represents the very best of Brazil: passion, energy, innovation, and heart. Only time will tell what her next achievements will be. However, there is no doubt it will be stamped with her personal brand of excellence. As with each of her endeavors, Fazenda Floresta is a fusion of passions—for Arabian horses, for beauty, for nature, for giving, and for helping others. THE FUTURE... Stores around Brazil, then stores around the world, all with the mission to teach people to use, enjoy, and transform what is being wasted into something truly wonderful. Brazilian Nationals … The Show The World Needs July 18-21, 2018
by Santi Fornieles
A
s you walk through the show barns in almost every show around the world, one will find all sorts of people co-existing in this ecosystem called the Arabian horse show: nerve-wrecked managers, anxious trainers, curious passerby, focused grooms, and self-proclaimed experts and ”opinionologists”; each and every one, running nervous from the barn to the ring and back, drinking more coffee than the body can take in. “Did you bring the halters?” “Where is the 0.8 clipping machine?” “Go and get me the black lead!” Madness is all around, until somebody pauses and asks, “Hey, where is the fun?” Ar abian Horse Times | 12 | Br azil ~ 2018
The answer to that question is simple; it can be found at the Brazilian Nationals. Arguably, there is no other show in the world with more high energy than in Brazil. Maybe it is because of the tropical weather or the caipirinhas. Or maybe it is from knowing the reputation of its breeders and their amazing horses who have achieved national championships throughout the world for decades. It could be from the fact that most breeders and owners in Brazil are true horsemen who have much knowledge to learn from, and who will be available through Farm Tours after the show. Or it could just be the color, music and spirit of the Brazilian people which lures. There are unlimited reasons for partaking in the Brazilian Nationals, but definitively ‌ This is the show that the world needs.
This is THE show.

Brazil Cover Story:
Once (Or Twice) In A Lifetime
by Theresa Cardamone, edited by Darath Smith
“Once-in-a-lifetime” stallions are, by definition, singular and rare. And yet, new breeders Stormy Skye Arabians, LLC, may have found just such a centerpiece in 2017 Brazilian National Reserve Champion Colt, Razeer Serondella. Known in Brazil as “The One,” the son of El Tino—a Brazilian National Champion and superior sire—was selected by breeder/ owner Fabio Amorosino to continue the legacy of Haras Sarondella. Even more impressive is Razeer’s dam, the renowned FA El Shawan daughter: Brazilian, United States and Scottsdale Champion Mare, Queen Ayda FWM. Ar abian Horse Times | 14 | Br azil ~ 2018
El Tino
Queen Ayda FWM
Kansas City, MO trainer Blake Skole, is the “quarterback” for the Stormy Skye team. “Relationships are built on trust,” he says. “The owners knew me and reached out last fall with interest in the horse business.” Stormy Skye prefers to keep a low profile and have Blake look out for their best interests, with the utmost desire being the vision of a high-quality breeding program. “We have a good circle of trust between us,” he continues. “Their first priority of collecting three exceptional mares was already met and then plans shifted to include the possibility of buying a special colt with a royal pedigree.”
the others in his pedigree.” Blake also spoke to other knowledgeable horsemen who had seen Razeer in “real life” and he took a “virtual tour” of the horse. The stars aligned.
This year at Scottsdale, Travis Rice, head of sales and marketing for Royal Arabians, along with international trainer Rodolfo Guzzo, showed Blake a video of Razeer Serondella. “The colt never left our minds,” Rice reports. The colt never left Blake’s mind either. He couldn’t shake a feeling of “déjà vu.” It was as if he was being given a second “chance-in-a-lifetime.” Blake had once found another yearling colt with every quality necessary for it to become a great breeding stallion. But, before he could act to purchase him, the colt was bought by a group put together by Rodolfo Guzzo himself. For the next 12 years, Blake watched the colt, FA El Shawan, develop just as he had foreseen. “There was always a little thorn in my side that the deal didn’t come together,” Blake says ruefully. “I have always loved that horse.” Blake found his old VHS tape of the then-yearling El Shawan, rounded up a VHS player, and ran the films of him and his grandson Razeer side-by-side. “I was looking at the same horse,” Blake exclaims, “Maybe even a little better! I went back and forth for a week watching those tapes. The body structure, lay of the shoulder, and his overall quality and presence make it undeniable that this colt will be as great a sire as
After three months of research and diligent efforts by the team, Blake approached Fabio through Guzzo and negotiations transpired. Eventually, terms were agreed upon in a “win-win” deal that will also leave Fabio with breeding rights for 40 breedings per year, over three years, once the colt is sexually mature. Haras Serondella’s legacy is protected and Razeer will have 120 foals on another continent. The plan is for Razeer to compete for a national championship at this year’s Brazilian Nationals before he is exported to the United States and his new home at Cedar Heights Farm, which is owned and managed by Blake Skole. The colt will dictate what will come next. Perhaps, a rejuvenating layoff to acclimate to Missouri will be in order. He will be promoted in all of the major futurities and, if he can handle it, he will breed 10-20 mares as a 2-year-old. “Our plans will change as the colt changes,” says Blake. “We will be vigilant to protect him both physically and mentally. He is a really confident colt and we want his natural charisma and machismo to shine through. He won’t be shown a lot, but when we come to show, we will come to win.” “Without Fabio’s vision, none of this would have happened,” credits Blake. “We are looking forward to a long relationship with him, Guzzo Worldwide, Royal Arabians, and Travis Rice. We want the owners of horses in his pedigree to be as proud as we are.” The right horse, the right time and the right team are the key ingredients to the masterpiece that is Razeer Serondella; a once-in-a-lifetime horse for Stormy Skye Arabians, LLC. n

HARAS CRUZEIRO
Out Of The Box, Into The Vision by SA NT I AGO FOR NIELES
FT HAVANNA EL KEAV The rolling hills of Araxá boast exotic nature from the typical tropical weather in Brazil, and also host one of the most intriguing breeding programs in South America. The first thing that you notice as you approach the breeding program of Haras Cruzeiro is that it could easily be marked as one of the most out of the box thinking farms in South America. The blending of European flavour with Brazilian taste have produced something absolutely different than the rest that you will find around. And that`s something to dive into! The first glimpse at the breeding program is through the dashing Twice Brazilian National Champion Stallion, HDB Sihr Ibn Massai. This Italian import has a blend of Russian and straight Egyptian pedigree with a touch of classic Spanish lines through the immortal Estopa. His pedigree is a complete outcross to the dominating Marwan Al Shaqab and WH Justice bloodlines on the scene today, which of course is a bold move that shows just how far out of the box is the owner Leandro de Aguiar willing to go. And the bet sure payed off as HDB Sihr Ibn Massai has
already produced excellent Brazilian National Champion Yearling Filly Caríssima LA out of MS Magnolia (Marwan Al Shaqab) and the sensation of 2017 Brazilian Nationals, Flora LA out of FT Havanna el Keav (HK Keav Power), who will compete in Brazilian Nationals in 2018 and for whom Leandro de Aguiar has turned down record breaking offers. The ideas Leandro de Aguiar has on breeding are the spirit and the inspiration behind Haras Cruzeiro: “Thinking out of the box is the only way to achieve a superstar, a game changer. If you see all the game changers throughout the history of the breed, they all came from a totally different bloodline than the previous one: Bask, Ansata Ibn Halima, Bey Shah, Padrons Psyche/Magnum Psyche, Marwan Al Shaqab... all of them gave a different look from the previous one and all of them came from different bloodlines. So history tells us: If you want to breed a game changer, you need to breed differently” – says Leandro de Aguiar founder of Haras Cruzeiro. “But this does not mean to NOT use the top bloodlines today. On the contrary, it means use them in a different way... in a way nobody is doing right now to achieve
Ar abian Horse Times | 16 | Br azil ~ 2018
what nobody has achieved up to now. I know I may miss more than I may hit, but that is a risk I am willing to take. Nobody achieved something different by doing what everyone else does” – concludes Leandro. Bold. Big. Exciting and even more, Haras Cruzeiro is more than just an adventure, is a philosophy of life. The broodmare band selected by Leandro de Aguiar together with his dear friend and advisor, Zico Guardia is one of the best in Brazil and South America. Mares like the Gazal Al Shaqab daughter Shariba (Gazal al Shaqab x Thee Rahiba), who was Brazilian National Champion Mare with one of the most exciting performances ever at a Brazilian National Show, or her maternal sister the white beauty Turchiya MPE (by WH Justice) are part of the foundation that is being bred to HDB Sihr Ibn Massai but also to some of the top stallions in the world. Other Brazilian superstars are also making the name of Haras Cruzeiro, and they are the result of the out of the box quest from Leandro Aguiar. They come from different pedigrees than the established ones, but have certainly made their job of successfully trying something else: Yasmin HWM by US, Brazilian and Argentinean National Champion, Legacy of Fame who was also Brazilian National Champion Mare and is the dam of Radasha Arabaco, one of the sensations of the 2017 Brazilian Nationals while achieving the Brazilian National Championship yearling Filly and last but certainly not least, FT Havanna el Keav, the winningest mare in Brazilian History after being named four times Brazilian National Champion Mare and Premium Cup Champion. She was also Las Vegas Bronze Champion Mare in 2017 and has produced Leandro De Aguiar`s pride and joy, Flora LA by none other than HDB Sihr Ibn Massai. Flora LA is a confirmation that out of the box thinking gives you magnificent results, as FT Havanna is a daughter of HK Keav Power, who had great success in Brazil prior to his young passing and also comes from a completely open sire line for the US and European market. The result of such an incredible group of broodmares comes is represented by the flashy chesnut daughter of Magnum Chall HVP, Donata LA, and the daughters of HDB Sihr Ibn Massai, Belíssima LA (MS Magnolia by Marwan Al Shaqab) Bela LA (Yasmin HWM by Legacy of Fame) and the spectacular Caríssima LA who was crowned Brazilian National Champion Yearling Filly. “I love all HDB Sihr Ibn Massai daughters, they are the future, the result of the philosophy of Haras Cruzeiro and the mares that will produce what we are dreaming to achieve, but the one that owns my heart is Flora LA, she is my pride, my vision of what I aim breeding and that... that is the best thing any breeder in the world can have!!” says Leandro de Aguiar. “She is the reason why I started breeding horses, to achieve the dream of breeding a filly like her, and that is what makes me proud. But now that I have achieved my goal, I am searching to breed the next game changer. Only time and God will tell If I ever accomplish that, but for sure I am excited to walk the path to make it happen!!” Ar abian Horse Times | 17 | Br azil ~ 2018

When you walk the grounds of Haras Vila Dos Pinheiros, you will find the most amazing structures and barns in South America, combined with natural pastures filled with some of the most impressive broodmare bands in the world. At the main barn, you will find a classic fountain. Some people see it as an ornament, but to others, it stands as a perpetual metaphor for the breeding program of Haras Vila Dos Pinheiros. A breeding program where champion after champion emerges from the veins of this farm into the world, adding charm to the already charming ... mystique to the already intriguing. And the beauty of this fountain is that every year the champions renew themselves and a new generation emerges, flowing like water in a never ending quest for beauty. It was a cold morning in late January; the frosty air pinked Elizabeth Milam’s cheeks as she hurried back down to the barn. She’d been up nearly all night on foal watch and was returning to her post after a brief respite. She and her husband, Jack, were excited to be foaling out mares at home for the first time since they began raising Arabian horses in 2011. Five babies were expected in 2017 and the Milam’s looked forward to watching them grow into champions. Little did Elizabeth and Jack know the dizzying heights to which those foals would begin to soar, carrying the name of Regency Cove Farms into the upper echelon of the breed.
Within the span of a few days, Elizabeth and Jack welcomed two bay colts who would grow up to become the Arabian industry’s two most decorated and talked-about yearling colts of 2018: ABWC Supreme Gold Champion and Scottsdale class winner, Antares RCF (Barzan Al Shahania x Forever Mi Dream, by Ever After NA); and ABWC Supreme Silver Champion and unanimous Scottsdale Champion, El Rey Magnum RCF (Basilio CS x Cirque du Soleil BF, by Apalo).

Some breeders wait a lifetime—producing hundreds of horses—before they experience the satisfaction of seeing animals that they bred standing in the champion’s spotlight at world-class horse shows like Scottsdale or the Arabian Breeders World Cup in Las Vegas. Within two months in 2018—after breeding less than two dozen horses—the Milam’s had accomplished both.
A chance outing to an open house in October 2011 introduced renowned bulldog and French bulldog breeders Jack and Elizabeth to the Arabian horse; they were smitten. Two weeks later, they owned their first Arabian. They did their research and attended the annual Scottsdale farm tours the following January, listening and learning all they could absorb. “We heard/ the announcer say the same names over and over,” says Elizabeth. “We heard him say ‘Psyche’ and ‘Ever After’ and ‘Magic Dream’ and what important producers their daughters were.” Those names stuck in Elizabeth’s head and created a strong thread in the tapestry of bloodlines she and Jack were weaving.
For the next year or two, the Milams acquired a few more mares and 2012 U.S. National Reserve Champion 4-5 Stallion Apalo, a royally bred chestnut by Justify (himself by Magnum Psyche and from the ten-time national champion S Justadream) and out of Gloria Apal (Psytadel US x SA Misha Apal). Apalo was the Milams choice for herd sire for Regency Cove and is a special favorite of Jack’s.

“There are truly special horses that tell you what they are right from the start. This colt has done exactly that. It is no wonder. His pedigree is full of horses everyone remembers the first time they saw them. He was the third consecutive Gold Champion Yearling Colt, I’ve had the honor to present in Las Vegas, and it could not have been for two more dedicated or enthusiastic breeders. Jack and Liz have one of the special ones here!” ~ Sandro Pinha

Elizabeth used that affection to their advantage during a regional show when trainer Greg Hazlewood told her that two Ever After fillies had come available for purchase. “Apalo ended up winning the championship and Jack was in a celebratory mood,” Elizabeth confides. “Greg kind of nudged me and said, ‘Let’s hit him up right now!’ It was perfect timing and the next thing I knew, we bought those two fillies.” One of the fillies was Forever Mi Dream (Eva), whose dam, Psyches Amber Dream, is a Padrons Psyche daughter out of a Magic Dream daughter. Eva was named the Scottsdale Signature Stallion Reserve Champion as a yearling before beginning her broodmare duties and was also Scottsdale Reserve Champion 3-Year-Old Mare with Sandro Pinha.
The Milams selected multi-national champion Barzan Al Shahania to breed to her, in large part due to his phenomenal dam, NW Siena Psyche, herself a national champion many times over. The result was Antares RCF, the colt born on that cold day in January 2017. The first time he was shown, Antares won his large yearling class at Scottsdale and was the crowd favorite in the championship. The second time he was shown, in Las Vegas among the finest colts on the planet, he was named the ABWC Supreme Gold Champion Yearling Colt. Elizabeth still can’t quite believe that what occurred wasn’t a wonderful dream.

“We watch that video of Vegas and pinch ourselves that it happened,” she laughs. “We just have to thank luck. It’s not like we’ve been breeding for twenty years and have a strung-together, generational breeding program we can point to; ‘this is our master plan.’ We certainly want to be successful, but at that level, it was quite a jolt!”
El Rey Magnum with David Boggs
And a jolly jolt at that. “The trick will be to hold on to that success,” Elizabeth continues. “It can be rather fleeting in this industry because you never know who is going to have the next big thing. For as small of an industry as it is, it’s really difficult to break through when there are so many high-powered people involved and a small amount of top shows.”
Partially due to the fact that he was the first Arabian foal born at Regency Cove, Antares has always been the Milams favorite. But his several-days-younger pasture buddy, El Rey Magnum RCF, caught the eye of master marketer David Boggs when he came to Oklahoma City for the Youth Nationals, and a deal was made that eventually sent the colt to Orrion Farms. At the 2018 Scottsdale show, El Rey Magnum won the Scottsdale Champion Yearling Colt honors for his new owners. In Las Vegas, El Rey received the ABWC Supreme Silver Champion award behind his old friend, Gold Champion Antares.
“We couldn’t have custom-ordered a better ownership team for that colt, with Orrion Farms and Doug Leadley managing,” states Elizabeth. “Just knowing that he will have the kind of home that he’ll have was really more satisfying than all of the hype. But that’s been nice, too. It’s a way to put a little more attention on our farm than there ever was before. We thought, what a perfect opportunity to get a colt with Midwest Training Centre and get that kind of exposure for him. We couldn’t buy that kind of notoriety. We just thought it was a perfect situation for him.”
In a perfect world, Jack and Elizabeth would partner with another breeder to promote Antares in the future. “He’s really the horse of our dreams at this point,” Elizabeth confides. “We are excited about the prospect of breeding him to our Apalo daughters, Jack and Antares RCF waiting for the results.
because he really offers the ingredient that they need. It would be my dream to have an ownership group where we retain part ownership and a lot of breeding rights. I would like to maintain some kind of contact with that horse.”

The Milams faith in their Apalo mares is well-grounded. El Rey Magnum’s dam is the Apalo daughter Cirque du Soleil BF. Cirque’s mother En Soleil was also in the Regency Cove mare band and has left a full sister to Cirque du Soleil in her place. El

Rey’s father, Basilio CS (JJ Bellagio x Goddess of Da Vinci), is also owned by Regency Cove and is another of Jack’s favorites. “We liked the prospect of trying to find another anchor stallion to mix with our Apalo daughters,” Elizabeth explains. “Basilio was our first attempt at that. We’re curious to see if that match will be a click or if it’s a oneand-out, we don’t know yet. We’ve just bred another one of our more beautiful Apalo daughters to Basilio to see if there is something there.”
En Soleil
As Jack and Elizabeth Milam continue to unfold their program at Regency Cove Arabians, they do so with their efforts already rewarded; because of Antares and El Rey, the Milams received the Arabian Breeders World Cup’s Breeder of Distinction award. It was a huge honor for relatively novice breeders, who are on the ride of their lives. “It was such a thrill to see them both in that big ring in Vegas,” Elizabeth reiterates. “We have to watch it back on video to really experience it. Even the announcers…we didn’t hear half the things that were being said or what went on, we were so wrapped up in the moment.”
Elizabeth still sounds incredulous. “When El Rey got called for Silver Supreme, I was thrilled,” she says. “We were standing in El Rey’s win picture when they called Antares for the Gold! I had to contain myself! After that, Jack and I went back up in the stands by ourselves with our trophy and were just kind of numb. Unfortunately, we had left early because we had to get to the airport, so we missed the presentation of the Breeders award. It was slightly disappointing that we didn’t get to be present for that portion of it, too, but it was an amazing experience that we will never forget.” Silver & Gold Champions El Rey Magnum & Antares RCF
As honored as they are to have earned such prestigious awards, Jack and Elizabeth Milam appreciate the response that their horses receive from their colleagues even more. “So many people in Scottsdale made their way over to us for no other reason than to compliment Antares,” Elizabeth relates. “That’s been even more satisfying than the show wins. That’s the real validation, the feedback from your peers.”

JAIME PINHEIRO VILA DOS PINHEIROS INDAIATUBA – SP, BRAZIL
When did you start breeding? I started breeding around 28 years ago. What do you consider is Brazil’s best asset as a country within the world scenario? Haras Meia Lua. Do you believe Brazilian breeders are achieving a balance between beauty and functionality? Yes. Brazilian breeding has improved a lot and achieved successfully a balance between beauty and functionality. What do you think Brazilian breeders should improve in general? I wouldn´t say “improve”; I´d say that Brazilian breeders should support more performance horses.
What breeding attribute do you think has been lost and would like to see come back? I would like to become a larger number of breeders in Brazil.
Who do you consider to be the most important horse bred in Brazil in the last 10 years? The most important bred by you? RFI Farid and HK Keav Power. And bred by me, Magnum Chall HVP and Baviera HVP.
Where do you hope to see your breeding program in 10 years? I would like to keep the quality and all objectives achieved.
BLAKE SKOLE
CEDAR HEIGHTS FARM KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI
When did you start breeding? I guess you could say that I started breeding before I was even born. My parents had been breeding well before I came along and some of those horses are still in the pedigrees of a few of the mares we are breeding now. But I have been studying horses’ pedigrees and what different bloodlines bring for as long as I can remember. It’s now a passion for me. What do you consider is Brazil’s best asset as a country within the world scenario? In my opinion, the influence of Brazilian breeding is very strong in our current breeding standard. The horses that come from Brazil can be imported into the United States and be very competitive at the highest levels. That is not the case for horses from some other countries. It seems the Brazilian horses instantly succeed in the show ring and breeding barn.
Do you believe Brazilian breeders are achieving a balance between beauty and functionality? I 100% believe that the horses from Brazil are reaching the highest levels of beauty and functionality. The breeders in Brazil take great pride
Ar abian Horse Times | 46 | Br azil ~ 2018
in what they breed and are very calculating in every move they make. Brazilian breeders make quality in general, their primary focus. What do you think Brazilian breeders should improve in general? If I was to want to see Brazilian breeders do anything, it would be marketing their horses on a more worldwide basis. Who do you consider to be the most important horse bred in Brazil in the last 10 years? The most important bred by you? As for the most important horse(s) bred in Brazil, for me it has to be Razeer Serondella! We’ve made a huge commitment to this amazing young colt that was bred and raised in Brazil by Haras Serondella. He will be a centerpiece of both our breeding program and the program of Haras Serondella for years to come. After Razeer, it would be his sire, Brazilian National Champion El Tino and his dam, Brazilian National Champion, U.S. National Champion, Breeders Finals Gold Champion, and Scottsdale Champion Mare, Queen Ayda FWM. The breeding of those two horses together created a huge piece of the future of our breeding program.
What breeding attribute do you think has been lost and would like to see come back? I actually don’t think there have been any attributes that are lost in modern-day breeding. Quite the opposite for me. I believe that breeding has evolved to the highest level of horses competing worldwide. But if I was going to say one thing, I would say maybe the versatility of our breed has been lost a little. I would like to see more interaction between the halter and performance worlds and lose the stereotype that a halter horse cannot be competitive in the performance arena. Where do you hope to see your breeding program in 10 years? In the next 10 years, I would like to see that our farm is influencing the breed worldwide and continuing to grow. I would like to see the babies and grandbabies of the amazing group of mares and stallions at our farm making an impact on all aspects of our breed. At the same time, we will maintain a good/family relationship with all the people we do business with. I believe in teamwork and trying to keep this business fun and successful! If we lose the aspect of fun and excitement, then we are, in my opinion, failing as a team, and I don’t see failing as an option!
LEANDRO DE AGUIAR
HARAS CRUZEIRO SAO PAULO, BRAZIL
When did you start breeding? I bought my first Arabian horse in 1981, the mare C Cashmere, bred by Claudio Bardela; but I consider having started the breeding of Arabian horses effectively in the early 1990s. What do you consider is Brazil’s best asset as a country within the world scenario? Brazil’s main asset is its great potential and its capacity to produce food, no doubt about it. I think that Brazilian agribusiness is one of the most modern and prosperous in the world, and it has been improving year after year, increasing quality and productivity. This is an asset that differentiates Brazil in the global scenario. Do you believe Brazilian breeders are achieving a balance between beauty and functionality? I think the Brazilian breeding has reached a high level, both in beauty and functionality, and I think we are among the highest quality breeders in the world. What do you think Brazilian breeders should improve in general? In terms of beauty, without a doubt, Brazilian breeding is among the best in the world. I think that at this moment of our breeding, we must take care of and improve the functionality of our horse.
Who do you consider to be the most important horse bred in Brazil in the last 10 years? The most important bred by you? This is a very difficult question. We have several individuals bred here in Brazil who have contributed in a very relevant way, not only to the improvement of Brazilian breeding, but also have influenced world breeding, therefore, I find it difficult—almost impossible—to point out the most important horse bred in Brazil. Regarding my creations, I consider the two most prominent individuals I have bred are two females: Caríssima LA, daughter of HDB Sihr Ibn Massai and the Marwan mare, MS Magnolia; and Flora LA, also a daughter of HDB Sihr Ibn Massai and out of the multi-champion FT Havanna El Keav.

What breeding attribute do you think has been lost and would like to see come back? In general, I see that all over the world our breeding has privileged beauty and refinement to our horses, which I believe to be very important. But we must not forget that a horse was made to be ridden, to be used in the farm, sports and leisure; and for this, important attributes should always be improved, such as strength, physical
resistance, equilibrium, strong legs and character. I do not think we have lost these attributes, but I think we need to take better care of them. Where do you hope to see your breeding program in 10 years? I would like to see my breeding program being recognized as one of the five best in the world.
DAVID BOGGS
MIDWEST TRAINING & BREEDING STATIONS SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA & ELK RIVER, MINNESOTA When did you start breeding? I am a 4th generation horseman, and 2nd generation Arabian horse breeder. What do you consider is Brazil’s best asset as a country within the world scenario? Their almost unbeatable soccer teams! Do you believe Brazilian breeders are achieving a balance between beauty and functionality? I believe they are wholeheartedly and diligently after this goal. Brazilian breeders are some of the best in the world. What do you think Brazilian breeders should improve in general? Promoting more the endurance and performance disciplines of the Arabian horse. What breeding attribute do you think has been lost and would like to see come back? I wouldn’t go so far as to say they’ve lost them, but compared to past
years, the amazing shoulders and well-shaped necks Brazilian horses were so famous for. Where do you hope to see your breeding program in 10 years? I pray for a continuum of the global influence of the Midwest Stallions.
MICHEL ALBERTO MORELATO HARAS E CANIL DONA FRANCISCA CAMPO ALEGRE – SC, BRAZIL When did you start breeding? 2010.
What do you consider is Brazil’s best asset as a country within the world scenario? The capacity to constantly improve what we do and strive for more. Do you believe Brazilian breeders are achieving a balance between beauty and functionality? Yes, but we need to improve on having more activities that prove their functionality. Ar abian Horse Times | 48 | Br azil ~ 2018
What do you think Brazilian breeders should improve in general? We should showcase more the functionality of our breed throughout the vast Brazilian territory.
What breeding attribute do you think has been lost and would like to see come back? Shoulders … ears … movement.
Who do you consider to be the most important horse bred in Brazil in the last 10 years? The most important bred by you? HK Keav Power; and bred by me … Aziz MAM.
Where do you hope to see your breeding program in 10 years? I hope to be collaborating with others to breed special horses that will influence the breed both nationally and internationally, for future generations.
TRAVIS RICE
FARM AFFILIATION: ROYAL ARABIANS, LLC SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA When did you start breeding? My family started breeding when I was just knee high. I was blessed to be a part of a family that had the joy of owning the immortal Padrons Psyche during his Reserve National Championship win in 1991 and watching his first foal crop and a few after, before he was sold to La Cabreah Arabians. It was during that time I had no doubt I wanted to be involved with Arabian horses for the rest of my life, and that breeding was the most important aspect of all. What do you consider is Brazil’s best asset as a country within the world scenario? They have many, one being, of course, that they are incredible breeders of the Arabian horse. But more so, it is the hospitality that Brazil delivers. Brazilians receive those from outside countries in a way words cannot describe, and you must experience it at least once. That in itself, will keep you coming back again and again. Do you believe Brazilian breeders are achieving a balance between beauty and functionality? Absolutely. What do you think Brazilian breeders should improve in general? Great question and a tough one to answer. They are doing so many great things, it truly is hard to point out any critiques. Brazilians are breeders. They breed horses. By that I mean, that they do not believe in breeding to the flavors of the day, moment or market. For example, horses such as *FA el Shawan, who has been a game changer, would have never gotten the chance he did in Brazil, here in America. The same goes for the rise up that is *El Tino. No horse is perfect and that is why you must breed what is weak in one to what is the strength in another, while still maintaining overall Arabian beauty; and the Brazilians are great at that. Who do you consider to be the most important horse bred in Brazil in the last 10 years? There are two … *Halyr Meia Lua and *Royal Asad. I could write a book on the reasons why!
What breeding attribute do you think has been lost and would like to see come back? Ears … length and set. Along with good solid tail carriage and set of tails. Where do you hope to see your breeding program in 10 years? I am blessed to be a part of Royal Arabians’ breeding program at present and I cannot see it going anywhere but greater beyond all means. Cindy McGown and Mark Davis have set a standard and are following it strongly; increasing qualities to their program day by day, and just as I stated previously, “Breeding Arabian Horses” to create the ideal. And they are committed, which is the most important part of that equation.
