COMMENTS from the publisher WHAT WE CAN’T DO WITHOUT—BREEDERS Let’s start with the obvious: Happy New Year! I hope that everyone looks forward to 2022 for all the wonderful horses, performances and friendships it can bring. I’m optimistic for 2022, and not just because new year’s is an upbeat time. I’m looking back at the horses I saw in ’21, who were some of the best I’ve seen in my life with Arabians. Somehow, some way, our breeders keep improving on the past, and we need to be grateful for that, because in breeding livestock nothing ever is guaranteed. That brings me to a problem I think we have that needs attention. If there is one phrase we’ve heard nearly every day in current times, it’s “supply chain.” Empty shelves? The supply chain has slowed. Dishwashers backed up for six months? Supply chain. Your new car? Place an order; the supply chain is disrupted. And the horse business is no different. What we see from our breeders now—all the beautiful, talented horses—is nothing short of incredible, but there aren’t enough Arabians being born to satisfy our demands forever, especially as we grow our community. We need more breeders. Why don’t we see more sources of horses? Because, as we know, it can be a chancy, pricey endeavor; not every foal produced hits a home run. So, how can we take better care of our breeders in a way that will encourage more people to join in? What incentives can we provide that will entice more owners to commit to producing even one or two horses a year? Here’s a thought to start the ball rolling: for one thing, we need for the Breeders Sweepstakes to offer a financial reward to the breeders of horses who win ribbons. But there must be other ways that we could establish as well. What are your thoughts? Let’s open a conversation. Look forward to seeing you at the shows and events this year!

by COLLEEN SCOTT

When Andre AN (EKS Alihandro x DM Versacianna) enters the show ring, he is positively captivating. Anyone who has seen this dark bay yearling colt—trained and presented by David Boggs—would agree. It’s simply hard to take your eyes off the stunning, tall, charismatic colt. “He is one of those rare horses that when he comes in, he just grabs you and you think, ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve never seen anything like him,’” says Boggs. “I really see magic in this young colt and I think Andre is on his way to becoming one of the best stallions in the world, both as a show horse and breeding stallion. He’s that special.”

Ar abian Horse Times | 12 | Volume 52, No. 5

Boggs’ observations are right on the mark based on what Andre AN has already accomplished in his short career. In February, he won the 2021 Scottsdale Yearling Colt class and was Reserve Champion Junior Stallion, and in September, he captured the championship title at the Arabian National Breeder Finals. At his U.S. Nationals debut, Andre did not disappoint and was named Reserve Champion ABS Yearling Colt in a very competitive field. Boggs anticipates he will be in the winner’s circle again this coming February at Scottsdale—and for many years to come. Bred and owned by long-time horse enthusiast and now Arabian breeder Stacy Sachen of Anivia Equine, Andre AN brings together a unique blend of Arabian legacy stallions and mares that have been history-makers throughout the years. “I was excited to cross the elegance of Versace on the boldness of Alihandro,” Stacy says of her choice of stallion and DM Versacianna. “When Alihandro and his offspring enter the ring, they capture your attention immediately, and Versacianna is an elegant, refined, aristocrat type of mare. She is a bit modest, but Andre isn’t shy at all! He has the same kind of charisma as his sire, along with the elegance and beauty of his dam.” As it turns out, Stacy’s thoughtful choices did produce an incredible colt in Andre. He clearly inherited much of what the world-renowned EKS Alihandro is known for—charisma and presence. By Marwan Al Shaqab and out of the mare OFW Psylhouette (by Padrons Psyche), Alihandro has claimed prestigious titles around the world and now has progeny doing the same. Adding his dam, Andre has the best of all worlds due to his direct blood line to Versace and maternal connection through Chantilly Ice AAM, by Aicying, bringing multiple crosses to Padron and Bey Shah. “He comes from a long line of genetic giants,” says Boggs. “And he has the best of all of them. He has the really beautiful eye cage from Versace. He has the charisma of his sire. And his conformation—with a short back but a lot of height for his age— combines what made all of the stallions in his pedigree the best of the best. We couldn’t ask for more. And he loves to show. He’s very fresh and knows everyone is watching him.” While Andre AN’s show ring presence makes him unforgettable, his barn personality couldn’t be more opposite. At home, he’s a big “couch potato” according to Boggs. “Jake leads him around. The other kids lead him around. Stacy feeds him bags of carrots. He’s very relaxed and chill. A pleasure to be around.” Besides continuing to share him with the rest of the Arabian horse community at shows, the team plans to breed him to some of the carefully selected mares that are part of Anivia Equine, including the Valentino daughter Maria PCF. Andre will also be bred to some select mares at Midwest. Expressing his hopes for Andre, Boggs concludes, “We look forward with positive hearts, watching Andre grow and mature into a magnificent stallion and promise to allow him to become ‘All that is possible.’”

Four-year-old, bay, home-bred stallion LMB Khold Hard Khash is proving to be a splendid scion for his sire, multi-champion western pleasure icon Khash PGA.

Cover story by CATHERINE COLE FERANDELLI

With the proven paternal bloodlines of Khadraj NA+++/ and his dam, PGN Kailicia’s Khemosabi and Varian bloodlines, Khold Hard Khash’s destiny with success seemed set from the beginning. Debuting in just three shows in 2021, he is quickly proving himself to be a western pleasure superstar, and owner/ breeder, Laurie Martin, couldn’t be prouder. A longtime breeder, renowned trainer, and lover of all things involving Arabian horses, Laurie believes she’s won the breeder’s jackpot, but getting there wasn’t easy. There’s a reason for “Junior” being aptly named Khold Hard Khash, as Laurie firmly puts it, “It took cold, hard cash to make him happen!” Being a highly knowledgeable student of bloodlines, Laurie felt certain that if she could breed her aged mare, PGN Kailicia, to her (then) stallion, Khash PGA, the result could be his sire’s successor to carry forward his inimitable western pleasure career and birthright. But achieving this special blend of bloodlines would take some real doing. Laurie explains, “Simply put, it took the very best equine veterinary and breeding specialists to obtain the embryo that became Junior. At the time, Kailicia was 22. A risk at any age for any horse, much less an aged mare, an embryo was delicately extracted and put in the careful hands of our breeding specialist Jerry Longworth. Though not considered robust, the embryo was implanted into our recipient mare and we hoped for the best.” Unfortunately, challenges continued to arise. The recipient mare colicked mid-term, resulting in an emergency surgery, and once again, three months before foaling. But upon viewing the ultra-sound and seeing a healthy, gorgeous ‘boy,’ the personal turmoil and expense was worth the risk of a second and successful surgery. Laurie pays tribute, “Chapparal Medical Clinic and Jerry Longworth, DVM of Scottsdale Equine Services are second to none!” Ar abian Horse Times | 4 | A.W.P.A Futurity

Months later, when Khold Hard Khash hit the ground, Laurie was instantly gratified, exclaiming, “Here’s our payback for this breeding journey’s investment of cold, hard cash! We have our western pleasure superstar.” Junior spent his early years with Laurie and life partner Mike Brock, at their ranch in North Scottsdale, growing up and enjoying an easy life. Laurie started him in his third year, sending him to trainer Brett Becker in late 2020. Becker affirms, “Khold Hard Khash is very typical of Khash babies, who stamps on his progeny a laid back, sweet attitude, fluid movement, a round body, tiny ears and huge, kind eyes. His babies tend to mirror him.” Becker continues, “All of this adds up to the ideal Western Pleasure horse, blessed with natural attributes, making them easy to train. Khold Hard Khash’s first time loping with me was 10 1/2 out of 10. As a trainer, I was thrilled to have this fledgling superstar in my care. “With just a few months’ training, Khold Hard Khash was ready for his show debut. We competed at the May Diablo Arabian show in nearby Sacramento, winning our classes. We then went on to Region 3 in July, again winning the Junior Horse championship. At this point, we felt confident he was a formidable contender for the AWPA championship at U.S. Nationals in Tulsa. And Junior gave it his all.” Proving his ancestry and Laurie’s genius of crossing the right lines to make a perfect match, the stunning, nearly black-bay stallion took home the championship roses in the AWPA $100,000 Western Pleasure Futurity. Junior now has a bright future. Laurie chuckles, “We want to continue having fun with this amazing, young stallion. I mean, what could be more fun than witnessing Brett’s glee at being awarded the AWPA champion prize scooter? She continues, “We will take 2022 one show at a time and then assess what next steps to take. Named at birth for big money spent, love, and lots of hope, Khold Hard Khash is truly the cherry on top of a very delicious cake.”

Ever grateful and feeling blessed for enjoying a lifetime of Arabian horses as an Amateur, a top professional trainer, judge and breeder, Laurie shares, “My life as a professional trainer is winding down, and suffice to say, my shingle is no longer out, but Mike’s and my Arabian horse journey continues. I was so fortunate to own Khash and was thrilled when we sold him last fall to Corinne and Meghan Gudgeon, a wonderful family. We are gratified to know they are loving, enjoying, and appreciating Khash as much as we do, and hope they truly revere him, as we know Khold Hard Khash to be, a one-in-a-million stallion.” n Ar abian Horse Times | 5 | A.W.P.A Futurity

AWPA STALLION SERVICE AUCTION MARCH 4TH-8TH

Ninety-four stallions are enrolled with the AWPA for 2022, with many offering both Purebred and Half-Arabian breedings in the March Auction. See who is the best match for your mare at arabianwesternpleasure.com!

WHY BUY AN AUCTION BREEDING? • 50% of the Stallion Nomination payments are reserved for that breeding year’s Auction foal crop to have as bonus prize money in the Futurity Finals! • Each year, the Auction bonus prize money divided between the Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurities will be determined by the number of breedings offered. • Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money: In-Utero Year Enrolled 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022

Futurity Additional Year Showing Purebred Money 2022 $24,940 2023 $29,700 2024 $28,710 2025 $29,290 2026 $27,440 2027 $27,260

Additional HalfArabian Money $18,060 $19,800 $20,790 $21,210 $21,560 $19,740

• The added money will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals -- no matter the placing in the class. - For example, in the 2025 Purebred Finals, if all entries are AWPA Auction foals, the Top 14 will each receive an additional $2,092.14 in prize money [$29,290 split 14 ways]. - Likewise, if 3 of the 14 finalists in the 2024 Half-Arabian Finals are AWPA Auction foals, they will each receive an additional $6,930.00 in prize money [$20,790 split 3 ways]! Don’t miss this incredible opportunity in March to have a foal be eligible for significantly more prize money than any other Futurity program!

AWPA RULES & REGULATIONS ENROLLING YOUR STALLION

Stallions may be enrolled annually for the fee of $1,000 by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. For example, to have a stallion enrolled for the 2023 year, the paperwork and payment must be submitted by December 1, 2022. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.

One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA Stallion Service Auction. A stallion owner may choose to donate two (2) breedings, one Purebred and one Half-Arabian, for their $1,000 nomination fee. • Whether the owner donates one or two breedings, the nomination fee remains at $1,000.00. • In order for both Purebred and Half-Arabian foals of the nominated stallion to be eligible to compete in the corresponding classes, the stallion must be entered in BOTH auctions.

• Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money that will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals – no matter the placing in the class. • The amount of prize money offered each year will be published in the annual stallion brochure. Stallion owners receive one ‘Auction’ breeding with their nomination. This breeding can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the Stallion owner to anyone the stallion owner chooses and for any fee the stallion owner chooses. An in-utero Mare Nomination must be submitted by December 31st with payment of $100. For every three (3) stallions one stallion owner nominates, they will receive a fourth stallion nomination at no charge.

• The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated Stallions who sire the Champions in the 2022 AWPA Purebred and breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000. Half-Arabian Futurity classes will receive a 2023 stallion enrollment at no charge.

MARE NOMINATION

In order for foals sired by an AWPA nominated stallion to be eligible to participate in the Futurity and Maturity classes, they must be nominated in-utero by submitting a Mare Nomination Form. Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year for a $100 fee. December 31, 2022, for this year. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.

Any mare that has been bred to an AWPA enrolled stallion can be nominated. However, the stallion must have been enrolled in the type of class the foal would compete in. For instance, if a stallion only offers a Purebred breeding in the program, then Half-Arabian foals would not be eligible, and Mare Nominations would not be accepted. The breeding does not have to be purchased in the AWPA Stallion Service Auction.

ENTIRES

The ONLY four-year-olds allowed to compete in the U.S. National AWPA Futurities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year. • Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on arabianwesternpleasure. com, and shows which breedings may result in eligible offspring. The ONLY four and five-year-olds allowed to compete in the AWPA Maturities will strictly be those who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.

CLASS GUIDELINES

• Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on arabianwesternpleasure. com, and shows which breedings may result in eligible offspring. An AWPA Class Entry Form must be submitted to the AWPA by the show entry deadline. The form can be found at arabianwesternpleasure. com. The AWPA class entry fee is $700. All other entry and office fees charged by National shows must be paid directly to the show.

The U.S. National AWPA Futurity classes are open to four-year-olds who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.

I

’ve been breeding horses since I was 17 years old, and I remember most of the horses that were alive at the time. I remember *Witez II, Abu Farwa, even *Raffles, old, with a broken leg. I remember the original Gainey horses, Alice Payne’s Asil Arabians, Jedell Arabians, Whitmore Arabians, and the early Lasma horses, of course. And such horses as Fadjur, Mujahid, Synbad and Radamason. I remember the well-known horses when I showed Bay-Abi to U.S. National Champion Stallion at Estes Park in 1962, and the other leading stallions when I showed Bay El Bey to his stallion championship win at the Scottsdale Show, back when it was held at the McCormick Ranch. I learned the studbook as my mom and I wrote out pedigrees, and as I saw the horses, I remembered them.

Continue this pedigree with Sweet Shalimar V on page 99. 235.

I also was lucky to ride as a kid with a wonderful rancher lady named Syd. I learned correct conformation from her and what made up a good horse. I was in love with everything about a horse; I trimmed the feet of all my horses until I had 28 horses, and no skin left on my knuckles from the rasp when the horses were jumping up and down. I trained my own horses, drove the van, and had tunnel vision about doing my best—and I worried if I could keep things going financially. I have taken my bumps and bruises along the way, had my feelings hurt and wondered when my turn would come to see appreciation for the horses I was breeding. That is the background to my 10 Commandments of breeding. I give them to you.

1

Breed toward your ideal horse. Don’t be swayed by the voices of others. If you have done your homework, in time, others will appreciate what you have accomplished. Many years ago, in 1961, the fledgling Varian Arabian Farm— my mom and dad and I—imported three mares from Poland: *Bachantka, *Naganka and *Ostroga (another story there). I bred two of them to straight Polish stallions. It was before Lasma brought *Bask to the United States; I used *Ardahan, but the cross was not a good one. I stopped using the Polish stallions that were here at that time on our three Polish mares, and started breeding to my own stallion, Bay-Abi. With that, I got the beginning of a wonderful line of mares from *Bachantka, and when *Naganka was bred to Bay-Abi, she gave us, among others, the kingmaker, Bay El Bey. People were not particularly nice to me about the fact that I wasn’t breeding straight Polish. I even heard that I was “bastardizing,” that I was merely breeding for the show ring and I would never be a master breeder. It was not a time that I could say, “Yes, but look! What I’m getting is so much better!” So I was quiet, and must admit that my feelings were crushed that anyone felt I was not really interested in breeding good horses. Now, 40 or 50 years later, it’s not that I care to say, “See, I told you so,” but I would say, “Breed for your ideal horse. Don’t be swayed by the voices of others.” If you’ve done your homework, and I had, others will appreciate what you have accomplished. People need to know this: if you really want to breed horses, then you must stick to what you believe is your ideal horse.

2

Recognize that you are breeding Arabians and stay within your interpretation of the breed standards.

Read the breed standards very carefully, because we do have breed standards. They talk about balance and conformation, and horses that have type but that are still useful and conformationally correct. This is most important. So, if you plan to breed Arabian horses that are extremely beautiful to you, and you are following breed type, then you should feel secure in breeding in that direction. You have to feel secure about it—not because of what someone tells you, but because you have done your homework and looked into the standards of our breed. Sometimes you don’t succeed. There may be a period of time when people disagree with you on what you are breeding, but if you are breeding for quality and you are staying within the interpretation of the breed, there will be others who will find what you are accomplishing worthwhile.

3

Breed equally for Arabian type, performance qualities, disposition and trainability.

We tend to forget that all of this goes together to make up an Arabian horse. The Arabian horse is not just type and not just performance; he can’t be just a horse that we pet because he is too difficult or incompatible to accept training. There is no reason in this day and age that our Arabian horses should not have all those qualities. And if not, then you need to address that in your breeding decisions.

4

Never forget: no foot, no horse.

I’m proud to say that we don’t have navicular at Varian Arabians. I can ride our horses barefoot. We should never forget that no foot, no horse. If a horse can’t be functional, he has no use other than to procreate, and in the long run, the breed won’t survive if we can only look at them. It is such a simple thing. Basically, these horses still need to be able to carry a person.

5

Always strive toward a horse of usable disposition, plus beauty. Neither is good without the other.

Today, there is no reason that we have to give up one for the other. There is no excuse for not having a horse that is useful as well as beautiful; you shouldn’t breed for less.

6

Follow the lead your horses set for you. The next generation need not be similar in phenotype to the generation before, but each generation must be consistent in overall quality. Huckleberry Bey was dissimilar to his mother and father, and he was a surprise when he came along—I didn’t know quite what I was looking at, but I kept looking at him, because he was so unique. I waited to see what he was going to become; when he was 9 months old, I knew I had a horse that wouldof fera differenta ndne woppor tunity forour br eed. And he sired himself in all of his sons and daughters.

Huckleberry Bey (Bay El Bey x Taffona, by Raffon)

Bay El Bey definitely included his mother and father, and while he sired some similarity to Bay-Abi, he also sired differently. As I’ve mentioned before, Bay-Abi was the yeast; he always seemed to take the best part of a mare and himself and put it together. So, if you have a young horse that comes out of your breeding program that is quite different, but still with exceptional qualities, don’t be discouraged. You may have a diamond that just doesn’t look like the other diamonds. I think that often those animals—the ones that are just different—are the great breeding horses, especially in stallions. You might have a stallion like Secretariat that is so much better than anything else in his breed, yet he never sired another as good as himself. Most stallions don’t; the great ones don’t necessarily sire themselves, but they might sire another step in the line. It just may not be a straight-ahead step. It may go in a different direction. Bay-Abi was a western type horse, very curvy, with a short back, and he sired Bay El Bey, who was 15.2, with a higher-set neck. He was a little more Thoroughbred-y looking; he could have been a great reining horse, and was an excellent English horse. Bay El Bey sired Huckleberry Bey, who was a beautiful English horse, unique to our breed. As a baby, Huckleberry Bey looked like a carousel horse, right off the merry-go-round, all arches and curves. And Huck sired Desperado V, who is strong and husky and very muscular, with exceptional bone and a beautiful face. He is a wonderful working western horse sire, and now is setting standards with his broodmares in halter as well as performance.

Desperado V (Huckleberry Bey x Daraska, by Dar)

3 Volume 43, No. 8 | 233 Ar abian Horse Times | 97 | Volume 52, No. 5

Volume 43, No. 8 | 233

There is no breed like the Arabian, which within a direct line has been able to sire horses that can trot as big as our horses can trot and can turn a cow as hard on a fence. Within a line, we’ve gone from the fanciest English horses to the best working cow horses. No breed can do that except the Arabian. That’s why I say:

7

Breed forward. Look ahead. Wonderful new surprises may be awaiting you. Recognize them when they occur.

What I am saying is that if your foal doesn’t necessarily look like its sire or dam, but is of exceptional quality, don’t necessarily discard it. If it still has overall quality, you may have a wonderful surprise. It may be the key to the vault. Huckleberry Bey and Khemosabi are examples of horses that didn’t look like their parents, but were extraordinary individuals themselves and they sired their likeness.

8

It is not difficult to improve the produce of a poor quality mare in one generation. It is not even difficult to improve the produce of an average mare in one generation. What is difficult is to improve the produce of an exceptional mare generation after generation. That takes real skill, knowledge, gut instinct, and vision. Your tail-female line will almost always be your weakest line. This is because often a breeder starts off with an average or poor quality mare and attempts to breed the produce up. You can breed the mare to a better stallion and get a better quality foal, and you can breed that foal to a better stallion and get a better foal.

Maclintok V (Desperado V x Marigold V, by Bay El Bey)

But if you really want to be sure that you have a program that is going to be consistent as breeding stock, you would like, as a breeder, that the bottom line generation of mares be very, very good.

9

Don’t be afraid to appreciate the qualities of others’ horses. Breeding is a competition with yourself, not with others.

Other people’s horses are where you look to see what you may want to add into your program. If your breeding becomes a competition with others, then you will turn away from things you need to include in your horses simply because you are in competition with them. Your mind needs to be open to what you’re seeing, without any feelings of prejudice or envy. If you can keep your mind open and you can appreciate the qualities you would like in your horses, then you’ll have much more opportunity to be successful.

10

Consider your horse’s attributes before you consider his/her negatives. All horses have both. It is for you to determine how positive his/her good qualities are before you dwell on the negatives. We can become so negative about horses that we close our minds to the good parts of a horse. We need to look at the positives first. Then, if there are not enough positives, do not breed that horse. Or if he has positives, but the negatives are too strong, again, don’t breed that horse. All horses will have some negatives; the positives just need to strongly outweigh the negatives, so look for the positives first. There is one overall commandment for all of us, and that is when we consider buying or breeding to a horse, we take into account not only what will be good for our own program, but what will be good for the breed as a whole. When I bought Audacious PS, I wasn’t thinking just of what my program needed, but also about what the Arabian breed today needed. (When I bought Jullyen El Jamaal, I was in the position of knowing I had to breed out from our sire lines. I was getting too much of the same blood, so I needed an outcross and Jullyen has been a huge asset to us and other breeders around the world.) Assuming that the stallion you’re considering is of very high quality and has no glaring major faults, I usually say that you need the stallion to contribute at least three things to the breed. Using have great ears, but I thought the breed could use better), eyes, and tail carriage—a true tail carriage, charisma, and happiness, carried by a horse who maintains a gentle mind. A good Arabian horse is alert, responsive, willing and gentle, not overly hot and reactive.

e have to remember that we’re breeding an animal that carries on the qualities that came from the desert, and although we have bred the Arabian to be much more beautiful than he was when he was carrying his owner to battle, we need to keep those original qualities— that gentle, strong, sound hoarse that has made the Arabian the horse of choice for upgrading almost all other breeds for centuries. So as breeders who are seriously considering breeding Arabian horses, we have to take that as an important obligation. We must remember what this breed is about and where it comes from, but continue to look forward to where we are going. That’s the joy of breeding Arabian horses.

When it comes to breeding Arabian horses, friends should not be a part of it. Enemies should not be a part of it. The latest selling price should not be a part of it. It’s simply opening your eyes and letting what you see flow in, unhindered by outside influences.

Sheila Varian, of Arroyo Grande, Calif., has bred,

Everyone tries to make this harder than it is. Sit down and watch your horse in the field until you know everything about it, not in its standup position or in the show ring with its tail over its back, but quietly somewhere, so you can absorb what you’re seeing. Then you must add the style, the charisma, the look—the thing that sets the Arabian apart from all other breeds and makes him unique in the world.

Cover Story

2021 AEPA CONTINUES TO SHOWCASE AND PREDICT THE FUTURE ENGLISH ARABIAN HORSE IN AMERICA by CHRISTY EGAN Since its beginning in 2007, the AEPA Open Saddle Seat Futurity program, including its payouts at the Ohio Buckeye Sweepstakes and Scottsdale Show, has awarded over 2.25 million dollars. Its success and the successes of its winners, both horsemen and equine, are the stuff of legend and the bright future of the Arabian English-bred horse in America. And once again in 2021, breeders Maroon Fire Arabians, and their partners Marty and Tim Shea, have been leading the way.

The all-time leading AEPA sires (in order) are Afires Heir, Baske Afire, IXL Noble Express+ and Afire Bey V. Bred by Marty Shea, Afires Heir is owned by William and Shirley Reilich. Six years after his passing, the Maroon Fire Arabians’ iconic stallion, Afire Bey V, bred by Varian Arabians, continues to be a defining influence in the 2021 Overall Leading Sires listing (4th) for the AEPA. He is Gail Liniger and Inception

also the sire of the number

one stallion, Afires Heir, and the grandsire of both stallions tied for second place HA Toskcan Sun+ (by Baske Afire) and SF Aftershoc (by SF Specs Shocwave). The third place stallion, Black Daniels, is sired by Afire Bey V’s stablemate at Maroon Fire Arabians and Shea Stables, IXL Noble Express+. The fifth place horse, Vegaz, is sired by Apollopalooza. Vegaz is linebred Afire Bey V

to MHR Nobility, sire of IXL Noble Express+. In the last 10

years, Afires Heir has been the leading sire of six AEPA winners. In the Half-Arabian AEPA, the leading purebred sire this year is HA Toskcan Sun+ with the Champion and Reserve to his credit, as well as two additional winners among the top ten. The real superstar in this group over the last few years has been the Saddlebred stallion, Undulata’s Nutcracker both on the top and bottom side of at least six of the 2021 winner’s pedigrees.

Among the Arabian horses currently being bred in America, there are some truly great show horses and there are some great sires and dams. In years past, the best show horses have not necessarily been the best producers, but this percentage has dramatically changed over the past 30 years as Arabians have been more carefully line bred for specialized divisions. In the 2021 AEPA $100,000 Arabian Saddle Seat Futurity, the champion and reserve winners are both sired by Afires Heir out of Afire Bey V granddaughters. Three of the top ten are Black Daniels daughters out of Afire Bey V mares. The HA Toskcan Sun+ top ten winner this year is out of an IXL Noble Express+ daughter out of an Afire Bey V daughter. In fact, every one of the 2021 AEPA top ten purebred class winners has Afire Bey V up close in their pedigree at least once.

Dave and Gail Liniger of Maroon Fire Arabians and Marty (and Tim) Shea of Shea Stables are extremely proud of their annual participation in the AEPA and their breeding and show ring success story. Their junior stallion, Inception (2017 AEPA Futurity Champion and four-time U.S. National Champion (unanimous)) had two of his first offspring at the U.S. National show this year. Proudly, they gave him his first national credentials as a sire. FF Twentyfour Karat (x Afires Gold, by Afire Bey V) was top ten in the Arabian Country English Pleasure Futurity and American Ambition (x Sweet ‘N Nutty, by Undulata’s Nutcracker) earned a top ten in the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Futurity. And the 2022 National shows appear even more promising with a large group of participants expected from Inception’s first two foal crops (2018 and 2019).

Altogether, offspring from Maroon Fire Arabians stallions Afire Bey V, IXL Noble Express+ and Inception, proudly accounted for 22 championships, 14 reserves and 177 top ten awards in 2021 alone, at the U.S., Youth and Mid Summer National Championships. The future of English remains strong.u

Top to bottom: 2020 Unanimous U.S. National Champion Park Horse, Inception; Tim and Marty Shea; and Leading AEPA sire Afires Heir.

THE ARABIAN ENGLISH PERFORMANCE ASSOCIATION

with Peter Conway

For the first time since the beginning of the AEPA program, I missed being at the U.S. Nationals for our championship classes. I flew home from the show to attend the memorial service of a friend of over 40 years. He lived life as we all should, with a wonderful optimistic outlook. I know our horses help us lead more fulfilled lives, and they teach us. Horses live in the moment, responding and reacting to what is happening right now. They remind us to be fully aware of today, of this very minute, of life now. Watching a Good Horse A good horse moves off its backend weight over haunch, foreleg high and round, carriage proud, ears, eyes, forward and bright. Providing a glimmer of revelation, a hint, a sense of an instant of almost understanding. The AEPA was founded to promote the Arabian English horse, to ensure the continuation and appreciation of these magnificent animals. Bring your passion forward again this year, and purchase a breeding in the AEPA auction. Special thanks to Arabian Horse Times and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services, for supporting our Nationals classes, and to Strawberry Banks Farm and Conway Arabians, for their support of the Buckeye and Scottsdale Maturities. Most of all, THANK YOU to every stallion owner that donates a breeding, and every breeder that buys one in the auction. It is your love of the Arabian English horse that makes this all possible. Created to serve breeders and to promote the Arabian English performance horse, get involved, breed wonderful horses, enjoy the competition, and have these horses in your life! —Peter Conway BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
