How lucky we are to share our lives with the Arabian horse; to have the privilege to breed, show, and simply be around these magnificent animals. The journey these horses continue to take us on, the friendships that continue to be made, and the world they connect us to, brings us lots of joy. We are fortunate to be able to showcase our horses at the most prestigious Arabian horse events around the country, the world - and for that we’re grateful. When the true love and passion is at the root of it all - success or defeat continually ignites the passion we all share to do better, to breed better, to celebrate each other. A victory for one is a victory for us all in celebrating the beautiful Arabian horse. Of course, we can’t go without giving thanks to all those behind the scenes here at RaeDawn Arabians who care for, and nurture our horses every step of the way - the Rae-Dawn team is integral in every sense of the word. Our team in Saskatoon and our team in Scottsdale - we are lucky to have some of the finest individuals caring for, and preparing our horses. As 2021 nears a close, we reflect on our victories, take note of our shortcomings and prepare for the 2022 season and beyond. As always, we welcome your visit and look forward to seeing you in Scottsdale! ~ Murray & Shirley Popplewell

As I congratulate the fantastic horses we saw at the U.S. Nationals—not just the champions, but so many others as well, because the quality was deep and impressive in nearly every class—I find myself not wanting to close this show season, as I’m not quite ready for the 2021 season to end. So, what to do? Paris, of course! I’ve been privileged to attend the World Championships (formerly known as the Salon du Cheval) many times, and I can testify that it is one of the equine world’s highlights. More high quality horses, more time with fellow lovers of the Arabian horse, and all in the City of Lights! It’s not just the excitement, though. The show’s real value is that serious horse lovers have a chance to gain a world perspective, to evaluate all the standout winners they just saw at Nationals in relation to what they will see from other countries. How do North American horses stack up against those of Europe and the Middle East? What other bloodlines would we like to add to our programs? What do our fellow horsemen say about it all? There is all the delight of Paris, as well as the opportunity to improve our own education. But those delights of Paris! Enjoy one of the most glorious cities on earth, all dressed up for Christmas—the restaurants, the sights, the history and the culture make this an outstanding trip even before you arrive at the show’s original venue, the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. There, the camaraderie and appreciation of our Arabians is the icing on the cake, a reminder that even in difficult times, our horses offer unsurpassable beauty. For those who are able to travel to Paris, and perhaps more importantly, for those whose schedules don’t allow it this year, a new book is coming out from Arabian Horse Times Abroad. AHT Abroad Representative Mieke Opsteyn has worked tirelessly with a limited number of writers, designers and researchers to create Paris … 40 Years, presenting the history of the World Championships, with its rollcall of famous horses and its contributions to the breed. It will be introduced at the show in Paris. We also have plenty of other stories in this issue—a look at some of the champions at U.S. Nationals, the Arabian National Breeder Finals, other top shows and more. We may be almost to the end of the season, but the world of Arabian horses always has a lot to celebrate. Good luck to all!

Passionate enthusiasts of the Arabian horse once again proved that no matter the outside constraints put on daily life during pandemic times, it can’t stop those who want to celebrate that which makes them happy. Hundreds of horses and thousands of their supporters gathered in Scottsdale, Arizona at the Arabian National Breeder Finals horse show to compete for over $110,000 in prize money in September. At the same time, over $75,000 in payouts went to those competing in the 33rd Silver Sire Futurity. All were happy to be at the show enjoying the Arabian horse on display. “It was a great show, with a lot of excitement from people who were happy to be back at shows without all the Covid regulations,” says Show Manager, Taryl O’Shea. “The quality of the horses was amazing, and people were excited to see the horse shown in the beautiful arena; their performance stage. And the camaraderie … it was second to none! Horse people love this show as they can mingle on the red carpet with their friends who they may have not seen since the Scottsdale show in February.”

Also momentous this year were the yearling classes. The level of quality competition combined with the potential to win incredible prize money made for fierce competition. And many Arabian stallion owners donated breedings to the winners in the weanlings classes, making for future ecstatic breeders! Adding performance classes to the show last year saw an enthusiastic amount of participants again this year, who are getting ready for U.S. Nationals, so the best of the best were present, proving the Arabian is more than just a pretty face. With 42 class options in country, western and hunter pleasure, plans are in place to enhance their schedule in 2022. The show committee is always working on new and creative ways to make the Arabian National Breeder Finals show a must attend event, and with this year receiving a ton of media coverage, it potentially ignited new passions within many for the Arabian horse and all its glory entails.

Celebrating 40 years, the Minnesota Arabian Horse Breeders (MAHB) Board, Officers and Show Manager work year-round to make each future Fall Festival better, and their efforts paid off. In September, both halter and performance exhibitors responded favorably, increasing participation by 30%, with close to 200 horses entered in the United States’ first ever Futurity show. “We welcomed competitors, horse owners and those who are new to the breed to visit the barns and the show ring to see some of the finest Arabian horses in the U.S.,” shares MAHB President, Donna Hentges. “There was quite a bit of activity in the barns with so many horses coming and going, that a visitor to the barn could literally pull up a chair and watch some of the most beautiful Arabians in the world go by.” The 3-day event offered over 60 classes in halter and the English, country, western and hunter pleasure disciplines, with exciting prize money. It is a highly anticipated show for breeders and exhibitors from all over the country who love coming to the Fall Fest to compete with the best, all while having fun doing it. The Fall Fest is heavily supported, both by its devoted MAHB Members and yearly attendees who know it is a proving ground of past years’ auction breedings, and a great opportunity to create future champions through the annual Stallion Service Auction. Over 100 of the most prolific and championproducing stallions in the industry today were up for bid, adding $140,000 to future shows. Part of the annual “fun” is gathering with one another for the very popular Minnesota Breeders tradition of feeding the masses at noon—chili on the 1st day and wild rice soup on the 2nd day of the show—while adding to the festivities this year, a cake and cupcakes in acknowledgment of four decades of success. Special honors went to Larry Jerome, who received the Eleanor Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the club over the years, and as always, the show’s volunteers who keep everything running on time and smoothly are what bring people back every year while adding new interest. They work tirelessly to make the show happen and you can bet they are already working on new ideas and improvements to make next year’s show even better! EDWIN Master artist, creative genius, horseman, beloved father, husband, and friend... 7-5-1932 to 11-11-2021 His legacy is immortalized in the masterpieces he created and in the lives he touched. Words alone can never describe the divine beauty of this man’s art. We share these images in remembrance of Edwin A. Bogucki... Rest in peace.

Ar abian Horse Times | 84 | Paris Edition 2021

Text and design by Beth Ellen Hunziker

Images - Introduction page: Detail from “Tutankhamen”, considered Bogucki’s greatest masterpiece. Created in 1980, it is 1/4 life size. Only one bronze was cast, making this a priceless treasure. This page, top left: Edwin Bogucki with his life size bronze sculpture of the Polish stallion *Bask, at the entrance to the International Museum Of The Horse, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, located at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. A life-size bronze of the Thoroughbred legend Secretariat and a smaller bronze of Man’O War by Bogucki are also permanent installations at the park. Top right: The stallion, “Ferzon”, 1975. Bottom, the Polish stallion, “Bandos”, 1985. Facing page: “Bedouin”, 1981, captures the beauty and pride of a Bedouin rider and his magnificent horse. The detail of this piece is incredible and the character of horse and rider are mesmerizing.

Edwin Bogucki began his artistic career with pastel portraits of Saddlebreds sold at horse shows in South East Wisconsin, near his home town of Racine. Later, he turned to oil paints. Edwin loved all animals, but especially horses and his muse was his long-time companion, a straight Egyptian stallion named Cairo. Like his bronze works, Edwin’s paintings, pastels, and etchings captured the very essence of his subjects. This page, top: “Friends”, a 1984 portrait of Bogucki’s stallion Cairo with his favorite companion, a Polish Crested hen named Snowball. Bottom: A painting titled, “Arab Stallion”, 1982, illustrates the authentic detail and character captured by Edwin Bogucki in his magnificent paintings. Facing page: “War Horse”, 1975, bronze bust. In this dramatic piece, Bogucki portrayed the energy and excitement of a horse and his anticipation of going into battle with his master. Edwin Bogucki was a prolific artist whose career spanned more than 50 years during which he created hundreds of works of art. A book documenting his life and showcasing his work will be published by his family in the near future. Edwin Bogucki is survived by his beloved wife Shirley Bogucki, children Steven Bogucki, Robin Bogucki Chen, Sheri Bogucki Wirtz, and Kathi Bogucki, as well as numerous grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. We wish them all the very best as they carry on the life and legacy of Edwin Bogucki, master artist.
