SAYING GOODBYE TO 2021 I don’t think many of us are sorry to see 2021 close while looking forward to 2022. While there certainly were challenges, I think that overall, our Arabian horse community had a very good year. In spite of a pandemic that truly is a life-and-death matter, we persevered in 2021. We took sensible precautions, but we didn’t let anything slow down our lives with our Arabians. We bred horses, we showed horses and we sold horses (a lot of them and for good prices!), and in all of those pursuits, we managed not just to survive, but as the saying goes, to thrive. That is no small matter. That reflects the strength of our community. So, let’s celebrate our horses and ourselves as this year ends. We aren’t friends just when the going is good; when the going is tough, we remain dedicated to our wonderful horses. As it has done through the ages, our Arabians stand proud in one of the darkest times of modern history.

I wish all of you, as Arabian horse lovers, a fantastic new year. May our industry continue to grow and our horses prosper in 2022.

JOY, PASSION, LOVE, FAMILY, CONNECTION— these are the reasons the Hagale family is back after a 20-year hiatus from Arabian horses. And they’re not just back—they’re back in a big way. Twin sisters Jamie and Jennifer Hagale, along with their parents Jim and Mary Martha, were a common sight on the Arabian horse circuit two decades ago and were particularly known for owning the stunning chestnut stallion Mamage (Zodiac Matador x CF Fire Magic). But life happened, the twins went off to college, got married and moved—Jamie to Steamboat Springs, Colo. and Jennifer to Nashville, Tenn. Children were next for Jennifer and Jamie and their lives seemed to be full— too full to add something else. So, they satisfied their Arabian horse passion with visits to ChriShan Park (where they rode as youth riders) on their trips back home to their native Springfield, Mo. But a few years ago, those “visits” sparked a question, “Why couldn’t we get back into this?” And the question sparked a conversation and before the twins knew it, Jim and Mary Martha were on board and the family started horse-shopping and showing. Fast forward to today and Hagale Family Arabians is fully immersed in the Arabian horse industry once again, even more so than they were before.
Cornerstone

While the family has amassed an impressive show string and are in the process of building their own barn in Springfield, Mo., undoubtedly SF Aftershoc (SF Specs Shocwave x SF Sweet Elegance) is the cornerstone of their breeding program. More importantly, he’s arguably the horse that embodies their passion for the breed. Purchased in November 2020 after the passing of his longtime owner and promoter L.A. Flynn, SF Aftershoc made a stunning reappearance in the show ring at the

“The photo shoot with everyone riding him, me, Shan, Stu, the twins, really sealed the deal for me,” says Chris Wilson. “Even at the end of a long day he was still so game and looked so good.” But the family was still a little unsure about showing Aftershoc. It was a risk—he’d been out of the performance spotlight for quite a while—and what if things went poorly? Would that ultimately hurt his reputation? Mary Martha, generally the voice of reason, was especially concerned about showing him. “It was a lot of back and forth,” recalls Jennifer. “Should we show him? What if something happens? Which class should it be?” Chris concurs, “It was a big decision to show him at the U.S. Nationals. So, we just entered him and decided to take him and see how he worked there.” Ultimately, the family and Chris and Shan would decide to have Aftershoc return to the ring. They even sent out an eblast the day before announcing it. “There was no going back after that,” says Jim. The intuition the team had was right on. With Jennifer in the irons, SF Aftershoc returned in glorious fashion, capturing the ABS Arabian English Pleasure AAOTR Jackpot unanimously. “The only other experience I can compare it to was riding Mamage in Madison Square Garden,” says Jennifer. “Aftershoc was just so much fun and it was just so special. I keep watching the video over and over again.” Shan thought the horse looked incredible in the class. “He was in a great place mentally and physically and Jen rode him really well. Everything just came together. It felt like it had some magic to it. He made it look effortless.” Chris concurs, “He just looked as good as he ever has. I am sold on that horse. He is the real deal.” Jamie, who rode CSP Adriana (Vegaz x CSP Gisele) in the same class, says that it was the highlight of the show for her. “Getting to ride alongside my twin sister and then watching the awards and getting to run back in there for the photo— the energy of her winning that class was just incredible. Aftershoc is such a special horse. I’m really thrilled she had the opportunity to show him.”
“When they offer you a ride on a Legend, any excuse not to seemed lame! #IRodeAftershoc.” said Stuart Vesty to his social media followers.

Af tershoc Superstars
It wasn’t just Aftershoc making headlines at U.S. Nationals. His get had the most championships at the show, with ten rose garlands being awarded to them. In addition to those ten championships, SF Aftershoc get claimed three reserve titles and 46 top tens. These were awarded in a range of classes, including halter, English pleasure, country English pleasure, driving, hunter pleasure, show hack and native costume. Lauren Adamek, owner of Captivating Shoc WA (x Captivating Style), winner of the Half-Arabian Mounted Native Costume AAOTR class, says Aftershoc is her sire of choice when it comes to her show horses. “His offspring are always so beautiful with loads of talent and personality.” Besides Captivating Shoc, Adamek also owns the purebred stallion Afterburner (x Quintessential Fire) and the 2-yearold Half-Arabian gelding The After Life (x Victoria’s Charm). “We are really excited for The After Life to start his career next year with John Rannenberg. I am very blessed to have these fabulous horses to love and show!” Many people who have bred to Aftershoc have never had the opportunity to see him show, which added to the excitement of seeing him in Tulsa. “It was a real treat to be able to watch Aftershoc show,” added Lauren. “It was awesome to see him in action and it reminded me of why we continue to buy his breedings. I personally got to spend a lot of time with him outside of the show ring. He is everything you would expect an Arabian horse to be. I am so glad the Hagale family has invested so much of their love into such an outstanding stallion, and continue to share him with us.” The Half-Arabian mare Savage Love VH (x MBA’s Nuttin’ But Thyme), captured the Reserve Champion title in the Country English Pleasure Junior Horse Championship with Jessica Clinton aboard. Owner Jenny Lau says, “This is the first Aftershoc baby that my family has owned, but I’ve seen Jess, Vicki and Andy work with so many over the years. One thing that is so clear when breeding to Aftershoc, is that you will

get a horse with a great temperament, which can make all the difference! ‘Nikki’ is just the sweetest mare, whether I’m giving her some love in her stall or riding her, she has such a willing and happy attitude. That, alongside her beauty and talent, make her a pretty special horse!” Wendy Potts, who captured the Arabian Hunter Pleasure Futurity title with Culture Shoc (x HF Luck Bea Lady), for owner Mari Perczak, says she has loved this particular mare ever since she first saw a picture of her. “I asked Todd Hickerson to get me a video and booked a flight to go see her right away. She was the smallest horse in that class, but you’d never know it—so much ring presence!” Lisa Blackstone, owner of Shocked N Bewildered (x Bothered and Bewildered), won both the Half-Arabian Country English Pleasure AAOTR 60 & Over and Maturity on the gelding. She was also top ten in the Half-Arabian
Country English Pleasure class with Jessica Clinton. “Vicki tells me Aftershoc is one of the kindest and most willing horses she’s ever been around. ‘Kenneth’ is the same. His ears are always up, he goes forward eagerly, trying to do whatever you ask, all with the best attitude possible! He also inherited Aftershoc’s elegant beauty and fluid motion. At only 6 years old, Kenneth has earned four national championships and two reserves in the Half-Arabian country English pleasure division which speaks to his amazing talent and picture perfect suitability in that division. Thank you Aftershoc!” The list of accolades for the stallion from owners of his get goes on and on, with the underlying theme of him passing on to his offspring an incredible work ethic, great attitude and Arabian type and beauty. As if seeing him show and win unanimously and seeing his get perform so well wasn’t enough, like the true superstar he is, Aftershoc had his own party. Hosted by Cedar Ridge Farm, Tom and Emily Moore, Hagale Family Arabians and Arabian Horse Times, it had the feel of a Hollywood legend being bombarded by paparazzi.
Even Aftershoc doesn’t take himself too seriously, and was happy to

lined up to take selfies with him that night for social media.
Evidence of his popularity was not only witnessed at the party itself, but all over social media, with admirers taking selfies and posting things like: “I got to meet someone famous tonight.” Jim and Mary Martha were excited to see so many people turn out to meet Aftershoc. “A lot of people came by to see him and it was such a fun night.”

FutureParty While a lot of their current excitement
centers around Aftershoc’s stellar return to the ring at U.S. Nationals, the stallion isn’t the only exciting horse in the Hagale Family Arabians barn. There’s I Love Luci (HA Toskcan Sun x Laurel Hill Pennies from Heaven), who was Shan’s mount in the AEPA Half-Arabian Saddle Seat Futurity. The mare, who was Mid Summer National Champion Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse (in a class immediately after she was named champion in a walk/trot class with Shan and Molly’s daughter Ellie), finished fifth in the AEPA class and was also top ten in the Half-Arabian English Pleasure Junior Horse class. Debonheir DGL (Afires Heir x Felicia Afire) was top ten with Chris in the Arabian Country English Pleasure class, and Jamie rode CSP Adriana to a top ten in the Arabian Park AAOTR. Jennifer piloted CSP Hot Dam (Mamage x The Vintage Rose) to top tens in both the amateur Half-Arabian Park and Mounted Native Costume classes. Another Hagale stallion, SF Destination Victry (SF Specs Shocwave x Aparty Girl) capped off an incredible year with a Reserve National Championship in Arabian English Pleasure AAOTR 19-49 with Jennifer, and a top ten with Shan in the extremely competitive English Pleasure class. The Hagales were extremely proud of his performance throughout the

year, including English pleasure championships at Region 11, 12 and 13, as well as claiming Mid Summer National Champion in both the AATR division with Jennifer and the Open with Shan. “Destination Victry is the future of our breeding program,” says Jim. “He’s had tremendous success thus far, at only 7 years of age, and we cannot wait to see

where he takes us, both in the show ring, and once his foals start developing.” “We just love him,” states Jennifer, “He’s such a joy to ride—super powerful and athletic, but also so willing to work, and he has such a great disposition. Outside of the thrill of riding Aftershoc to his unanimous win, riding ‘Dusty’ is always rewarding.” But beyond the performances and success of Destination Victry, or Aftershoc and that of his get, and even more than the victories with their other horses, the Hagale family is excited about how getting back into horses has sparked a new chapter of passion in the family. “We’ll use any motivation that gets us to see the girls and grandchildren more,” joke Jim and Mary Martha. “We get to see them a lot more often and we are all having a really great time.” Jamie concurs. “We really thought we would just be too busy to get

back into horses with our kids and other commitments and living out of town,” she says. “But there has been something so special about getting back into horses and spending more time with my parents and my twin sister. When the Arabian horse is in your blood, I don’t think it ever leaves.” Jim and Mary Martha are supervising the final touches of their new 100-acre farm in Springfield. The family’s future plans include continuing to breed to SF Aftershoc and their other foundation stallion, SF Destination Victry. They are also breeding to a handful of outside stallions. Besides making plans for the business side of Hagale Family Arabians, rest assured they are making plans for the family side, and the reasons they do what they do—passion, real connection, heartfelt joy and true love—for each other, their horses and the entire Arabian horse community. ■

How lucky we are to share our lives with the Arabian horse; to have the privilege to breed, show, and simply be around these magnificent animals. The journey these horses continue to take us on, the friendships that continue to be made, and the world they connect us to, brings us lots of joy. We are fortunate to be able to showcase our horses at the most prestigious Arabian horse events around the country, the world - and for that we’re grateful. When the true love and passion is at the root of it all - success or defeat continually ignites the passion we all share to do better, to breed better, to celebrate each other. A victory for one is a victory for us all in celebrating the beautiful Arabian horse. Of course, we can’t go without giving thanks to all those behind the scenes here at RaeDawn Arabians who care for, and nurture our horses every step of the way - the Rae-Dawn team is integral in every sense of the word. Our team in Saskatoon and our team in Scottsdale - we are lucky to have some of the finest individuals caring for, and preparing our horses. As 2021 nears a close, we reflect on our victories, take note of our shortcomings and prepare for the 2022 season and beyond. As always, we welcome your visit and look forward to seeing you in Scottsdale! ~ Murray & Shirley Popplewell

Pyranha Product Timeline A family-owned company in operation for 50 years, Pyranha® is a pioneer in insect control, grooming products, and barn and residential misting systems. In 1972, Pyranha founders Carl and Lon Cunningham developed the SprayMaster®, the first barn misting system for insect control. Today, David and Greg Cunningham continue the family tradition providing horse owners and caretakers across the country with the industry’s leading spray system, along with the highest quality insecticide products available to help protect their animals. Pyranha offers an array of innovative insect control products, from pyrethrin-based formulas to natural, botanical blends. Pyrethrin is expressed from the Chrysanthemum plant. It has the strongest insect- repelling qualities Mother Nature offers. The Chrysanthemum’s powerful, natural elements vary with each new harvest. These variations are vital for controlling resistance changes, due to immunity.

As another U.S. Nationals concludes, so too, does another successful year for Cedar Ridge Arabians. Five Cedar Ridge-bred and owned horses brought home some serious hardware—three championships and three reserves—thanks to the talented training and care of Laura Rodel, Kenny McDonald, and Stephanie Davisson. Ames Divine (ROL Divine Style x Julietta Ames), earned National Champion Arabian English AAOTR Maturity with Lara Ames and Reserve National Champion Arabian Pleasure Driving with Tom Moore; Lebron Ames (SF Aftershoc x Isabella Davinci), in his first AHArecognized appearance, came home with Unanimous National Champion honors in Half-Arabian Gelding Saddle/Pleasure Type 3 & Over with McDonald before proving his performance ability against verified champions with a top ten title in Half-Arabian English Pleasure Jr. Horse with Rodel; The Eighth Wonder CRF, Unanimous National Champion Half-Arabian 2-Year-Old Gelding with McDonald, is a full brother to Lebron Ames; and Unanimous Reserve National Champion Half-Arabian 2-Year-Old Filly Tohott To Touch CRF (Nutcracker’s Nirvana x Marion Ames) and Like No Other CRF (Arrowhead’s Unlike Any Other x HA Sahara Afire), Reserve National Champion Half-Arabian Yearling Filly, were both presented to their wins by McDonald. One of the reasons for CRA’s success in the show ring is their consistent ability to breed winners, which the Ames family has perfected over their 50+ years in the industry. Not only did they represent in the halter and
saddle seat arenas, but CRA-bred horses took national honors in driving, show hack and working western as well, against unbelievable talent, placing their stallion TA Mozart (Kordelas x Marieta) on the top of the working western sire leaderboards. From yearlings to the open, CRA was able to compete for the top positions of each, excelling in both performance and halter arenas. Davisson understands how rare and special it is to find success across all disciplines and divisions, and that it takes a good team in all areas of training, breeding, and showing to make it happen. Davisson believes the mantra of “teamwork makes the dream work” is alive and well at Cedar Ridge. “Each of us brings different strengths, and when we all work together to utilize those talents to the best of our ability, that’s when the magic happens.” Without a doubt, they are doing something right. One of the farm’s peak moments, barn manager Stephanie Davisson shared, was Lara and Ames Divine’s performance in the English Maturity on Monday afternoon. “The highlight of the show for me, was watching Ames Divine put on her best performance to date with Lara, and then the very next day, cementing her superstar status in the pleasure driving with Tom. It brought tears to everyone’s eyes and transported us back to many great memories of Dick.” Without a doubt, Cedar Ridge Arabians is doing something right. The Ames family and their dream team have more to prove in 2022. n

U.S. NATIONALS 2021 … THE ARABIAN SHINES! BY ALLY EDWARDS
It’s safe to say that everyone was excited to come back to Tulsa, Oklahoma for the annual U.S. National Championship Show this October. Located at the Tulsa State Fairgrounds, more than 1,800 Arabians and Half-Arabians arrived with their owners to compete for a national title. It was another year of high entry numbers, potentially due to the waiving of qualifications in response to last year’s show cancelations through the year from the Covid-19 pandemic. With a smidge of normalcy back, including having our Canadian friends able to attend this year, spirits were high and everyone was ready for a horse show. The weather was absolutely beautiful, with sunny and clear autumn days—just a hint of warmth to keep the chill away, allowing for comfortable passage between the three show arenas. Ford Truck hosted the main ring performance classes of western, hunter, saddle seat, and specialty classes like show hack and side saddle; the Mustang arena catered to working western, starting off with the working cow classes followed by reining, ranch riding, and horsemanship; while the Pavilion started off with trail classes before the breeding in-hand folks took over. This year’s theme for the 55th U.S. Nationals was “Ride For The Roses”—the dream fulfillment of trotting into the arena only to be the last one trotting out with your four-legged partner wearing the red rose blanket. It is always amazing to see the horses give 110% of themselves every time a rider gets on their back, especially after a full nine days of showing, and due to the large amount of entries, there were cuts for almost all of the performance classes. The largest—Arabian Western Pleasure Select—had 67 entries. With the quality better than ever, it requires the need for even higher skill levels to compete and gives even more weight to achieving a top ten win. Because of the high number of entrants, the usual break on Wednesday evening had to be canceled to accommodate the extra cuts added to the schedule, but this didn’t stop the Arabian Horsemen’s Distress Fund from putting on their annual fundraiser. Their Bronco Barn Pub & Grub Crawl featured a different hors d’oeuvre and cocktail in front of each participating barn, compliments of a catering company, at which wristband purchasers could dine and drink as much as they wanted while visiting friends at the different barns. The silent auction included a variety of items to bid on from breedings, to art, to show clothes.

Countless special and memorable moments were made this year as well. Thursday evening saw dueling piano player Tom Basler, hosted by Orrion Farms, play during the Futurity classes in the pavilion, and those attending the English Pleasure Jackpot class saw the return of the renowned stallion SF Aftershoc, who won with his owner Jennifer Hagale. The next day he was the special guest at a party hosted by the Hagales, Tom and Liz Moore and Cedar Ridge Arabians, all present enjoying live music, food, drinks, and comradery. Rene Ramirez won the Half-Arabian AEPA futurity on the mare Tooskcandalous RT, whom he bred, and the Mustang arena saw the first ranch rail pleasure classes. Khaberet PGA took home the first roses in the purebred open ranch rail with Liz Bentley. This pair also won the purebred western pleasure open in 2012, proving the versatility of the Arabian breed by winning top honors in two completely different divisions almost a decade apart. For whoever was lucky to be in the stands the last Saturday of the show, the final class, Arabian English Pleasure Open, was one of the best endings to a national show. In a deep and beautiful 10-horse class, it was almost impossible to choose who would end up in the top spot. For the last five years, this class has been won by Joel Kiesner, but after Joel, aboard JK Heiristocracy’s last appearance in the show ring before retiring, were pinned reserve, the championship trophy still went back to Kiesner Training, but this year with Ashton Kiesner on ROL Divine Style. The crowd went wild and she took her victory lap to a standing ovation from the packed stands. In the halter arena, handlers presented some of the most beautiful horses. Polidoro FC with Michael Byatt won the Arabian Senior Stallions and Baviera HVP won the Senior Mares with Andrew Sellman. The halter classes are always well attended, the Pavilion almost guaranteed to be filled with spectators cheering on their favorite horses. With music blasting and fans yelling, it is always a fun place to be. Generous sponsors also cater breakfast and dinner to the arena for everyone to enjoy. The Mustang arena seems to grow every year. There were so many entries in the open ranch classes, that it ran until almost midnight. The pattern included taking the horse into a pen with a small herd of cows and by the end, some of the horses were walking around sleeping cows! Seeing the working western classes grow, however, is exciting. It’s a fun, relaxed atmosphere in Mustang arena; everyone is always extra supportive of each other, and more and more people want to branch out from the main ring classes to try something new. Reflecting on the talent witnessed in all three arenas, the versatility of the Arabian horse is sincerely astounding and on full display. With all holding completely different divisions with different skillsets, but all done by the same breed, their willingness, beauty and talent never ceases to amaze. And to those who always put on a successful nationals show … THANK YOU! The U.S. Nationals is a shining beacon to which everyone aspires.

“A great Arabian horse … one of special heart, ideal conformation and expert training for the Saddle Seat discipline, can, and should be able to achieve the highest standards of both English Pleasure and Park at any given time; relative to the degree of collection, impulsion and elevation when properly requested by its rider. ROL Divine Style proved that at the 2021 U.S. Nationals, setting a new standard of excellence for the Arabian horse.”

2021 U.S. NATIONAL JUDGES’ REVIEW
WHAT CLASS(ES) STOOD OUT TO YOU? Greg Knowles: This year, I have to say the classes were top notch … great competition, high, high quality, and presented amazingly well. All in all, it was a great show. If I had to pick one as a favorite, it would be the 2-Year-Old Fillies, however, almost every major halter class had four horses at the top of each class that were really good. Paul Kostial: There were so many excellent classes and high-quality horses this year, including the 2-Year-Old Arabian Fillies class, which were exceptional—several of them world-class. Both the yearling fillies and colts, as well as the 2-year-old colts are worth mentioning. Futurity Colt Champion, Rhan Al Shahania, was a standout too; likely one of the two best entries at the show. He’s stunning, was presented superbly, and it was a unanimous decision for him. The show was blessed with many of the best from the USA and globally; judging was a “hair’s difference” in many cases, both at the champion level and even with each of the top tens. Multiple horses were stunning and presented with excellence and a quiet style, who were awarded top prizes. Tim Goggins: The junior performance classes are often my favorites. It’s great to see new talent that represent some of the best breeding programs in the world, and the classes we saw this year were fantastic. Brenda Brown: The Open Half-Arabian Futurity and Derby classes. Guy Vernon: I felt like all the classes had some very talented horses and riders, one in particular being the Amateur Ranch Riding. It was probably the deepest class of the show, there were so many amazing horses. The difference between being just out of the top ten and the National Champion might have been just a little bit of luck (good or bad), and it was a pleasure to judge. Terri Delbridge: I thought the quality of horses at the show—across the board—was incredible. I was watching a 20-horse hunter class with the MSU judging team when they asked me to talk about a horse I didn’t like. I only found one horse in a class of 20. That pretty much sums of the show for me. It was a great horse show! Margo Shallcross: The class that stood out to me was the Arabian Gelding Performance Halter class with over 40 entries. The quality of the performance horses was outstanding, with a great assortment of English, hunter and western type horses. The Half-Arabian Mare Performance Halter was also very deep.
WITH QUALIFICATIONS AGAIN WAIVED FOR U.S. NATIONALS, DID YOU FEEL THIS IMPACTED THE OVERALL COMPETITION AND QUALITY OF THE CLASSES? CAN WE LEARN ANYTHING FROM THIS? Greg Knowles: The classes were great. The horses I judged would have been at Nationals regardless if they had to qualify or not, so qualifications were a non-issue. Paul Kostial: I’m not familiar enough with all the changes to comment on this, other than to say the quality at the show in the breeding and halter divisions was deep. The classes topped-out at 22 or so and, in many cases, 18 to 19 of those were top ten worthy, which caused us judges to work more acutely to discern even the slightest edges that finalized their placings. Tim Goggins: The concern that there will be horses who are “unqualified” to be participating at a national show because they did not have to qualify and therefor are unprepared, did not seem to occur. In nine days of judging, I do not believe we saw more than a handful of horses that were a detriment to the rest of the class because they appeared “unprepared” to be there. The competition was the deepest I had ever seen at any show. Brenda Brown: I don’t think it effected the quality of the competition at all, and possibly opened up the opportunity for more people to be able to attend and compete at a national show. Guy Vernon: Waiving the qualifications is always a double-edged sword. You can argue that the quality of horses might go down, but it also gives a lot of people the opportunity to show on the biggest stage available. Terri Delbridge: I think my response to the first question answers this as well. The quality was fantastic! Margo Shallcross: The quality was very high in every class I judged (Trail, Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, Performance Halter, and three of the Canadian Futurity classes), and in several classes I was able to watch once my judging assignment was complete. There were great numbers in all the classes and outstanding performances throughout the show.

2021 U.S. NATIONAL JUDGES’ REVIEW
WHAT’S ONE TAKE AWAY OR SOMETHING NEW YOU LEARNED OR HAVE A NEW APPRECIATION OF AFTER JUDGING THE 2021 U.S. NATIONALS? Greg Knowles: The quality and level of true professionalism in the halter arena. It’s been a long time since I have witnessed such energy and quality in the halter arena at U.S. Nationals. Paul Kostial: As mentioned previously, the quality of the entries was exceptional; I was impressed. We worked thoughtfully to discern our winners, and placed my card accordingly. Worthy of note: there was less shanking and “jiggy” walks (when asked on the rail). The center stand ups were also far more quiet and respectful. Most every handler was well prepared, displayed a quiet presentation style, and they listened, if asked by the judges to modify a stance, for example. It’s a unique experience to judge a show of this depth and magnitude, and as the show came to a close, I was pleased with the entire competition. In the future, I want to see the breeding and halter divisions have their own exclusive, formal night, including green shavings, to showcase our beautiful Arabian horses. So much has been done to improve the show for the breeding division; just a few more steps will have it even more impressive and fully supportive of our vital breeding and halter community, and the future of the breed. It’s important that AHA and the U.S. National Show Commission do everything within their power to build, promote and showcase the event as much as possible. I’ll share more suggestions at another time, although the FORMAL NIGHT with green shavings is the top of my list. Tim Goggins: I guess the biggest takeaway was, Wow! What a horse show! It was such an honor to judge at the U.S. Nationals, and I appreciate the effort of all the horsemen and women in exhibiting such good horses. It was great fun!
Guy Vernon: I don’t know if there is anything that I learned or surprised me about this year’s U.S. Nationals. As always, the winning horses are truly great horses! Terri Delbridge: Having never judged trail on this level, I have a whole new appreciation for this discipline. To be competitive in Trail, even the Amateurs need to be able to move each horse’s parts individually. It was fun learning something new! Margo Shallcross: There was no negative impact to the show this year that I could see, and it was certainly as high in quality as any Nationals I have attended in previous years.
“I guess the biggest takeaway
was, Wow! What a horse show! It was such an honor to judge at the U.S. Nationals, and I appreciate
the effort of all the horsemen and women in exhibiting such good
horses. It was great fun!” — TIM GOGGINS
Brenda Brown: I was very impressed with the running and organization of such a large show. The team of people I had the pleasure of working with were all great. I was impressed with the high level of competition in all the events I judged.

U.S. NATIONALS
Since the inception of the H/A Country English Pleasure Jackpot class in 2016, Sal Mineo BF has been the only horse to win it, six years in a row.
Jim Sproles retires after 50 years as a farrier. Never one to believe he learned all, Jim constantly sought to make sure the horses in his care received the best attention. ROL Divine Style wins both the Arabian Park and English Pleasure, becoming the first horse to ever win both National Championship titles in the same year.

HONORABLE MENTIONS For the first time in 15 years, a breeding to HBB (AEPA nominated) was offered in a Facebook Live Auction by Arabian Horse Times. Proceeds benefited the AEPA and AHDF. Strawberry Banks won with the winning bid of $26,500. A second breeding was then offered to the second highest bidder to match the closing bid. Hagale Family Arabians accepted the breeding, generating a total of $53,000.

Another July in Oklahoma City means another Youth Nationals in the books. Riders aged 18 and under came together with their Arabians and Half-Arabians for 10 days of competition to win a national title. This year also marked the second time adults followed the youth to OKC to compete at the Mid Summer Nationals, which served as a replacement for Canadian Nationals as the border remains closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Held at the State Fair Park, roughly 1,500 horses from all over the country came with their riders to show with the best of the best. With qualifications waived, classes were large, but the quality remained incredible—clearly a national level show. While the main ring western, hunter and saddle seat divisions were well attended, just as busy were the performance and specialty arenas with working western, sport horse, and working hunter classes; and an extra dressage court was added in one of the outdoor rings to accommodate for all their entries. With the heavy covid restrictions lifted, it was easier for everyone to go back to enjoying the show while still being careful about keeping everyone healthy. The weather, albeit still hot, was not nearly as stifling as previous years, allowing for more fun to gather with barn families and enjoy the show and each other’s company. One of the most special parts of Youth Nationals is meeting up with friends not seen very often; oftentimes Youth Nationals being the only time during the year they get to see each other. It is a very special week spent with friends on two legs and four.
The dedication and talent of these riders goes up every year. Just when you think they are at the top of their game, they come back next year and somehow manage to be even better. One of the most impressive divisions to watch is equitation. Whether it is saddle seat, hunt seat, or western horsemanship, the skill is out of this world. With so many beautiful riders, it is always a surprise to see who takes the top spot because each one is the epitome of equitation. Heather Rogers had a tearful win in the Half-Arabian Saddle Seat class—her last in equitation as she ages out next year—with her English mare, CSP Rum Chata. Her extra victory pass was well deserved. Not only are they talented riders, but the sportsmanship never fails to impress. Exhibitors are always cheering their friends on whether they are in the stands or in the line-up together. The outgate is always littered with kids who are waiting to celebrate their friend’s win. It didn’t matter if it was a rose blanket or a going forward ribbon, the youth were always there to offer encouragement and congratulations on a good ride. This year also marked the third AHA Experience classes. Created to allow kids who are new to the competition world get a feel for what it is like to show at nationals, the hope is that they return next year to compete in the main Youth Nationals classes. Other events enjoyed by all included the golf cart costume parade, dog costume contest, a stick horse class, and an ice cream social. At the show’s end, they were everywhere having a water gun fight to celebrate the completion of another nationals.

A handful of youth exhibitors were also honored with the $1,000 Friends of Vail education scholarship. Susan and Chad Chance gift these scholarships through a random draw of all the exhibitors in honor of their daughter Vail who unexpectedly passed away nearly 5 years ago. Exhibitors also enjoyed a dinner held at Cafe 501 to raise money for the foundation. It was a full house, all there to honor a special little girl and her kind and generous family. Though it is likely that Mid Summer will not be held next year with the hope that Canadian Nationals will return, top amateur and open horses competed for national titles nonetheless. Among the favorites were the AWPA Western Pleasure AAOTR Maturity for both purebreds and Half-Arabians; the halter performance classes; and the amateur Arabian Park, a unanimous national win going to Rhein Standish on the stunning Barcelona BF. With the hope that “back to normal” continues in the right direction— fewer masks and the return of The Hat Lady—a sole focus on Youth Nationals is an exciting prospect to the kids, but should things globally take a turn for the worse again, plenty of adults wouldn’t mind having another turn with the Mid Summer show. As always, a big thank you goes to the show staff. Everything ran smoothly despite so much to handle. It’s a long 10 days and they never wavered. Putting on a large nationals, especially one that’s new with the addition of adult classes, is far from easy. But one thing is for sure, the Arabian horse industry loves to show their horses and everyone steps up to support one another so that all can continue to enjoy national shows for many years to come!
