of electric presence. Judy Sirbasku had no intention of selling Alixir until Mohamed Jaidah came into the picture. Alixir is the stallion around whom Mohamed Jaidah has built his dream breeding program. It was through videos, articles, and photos that he fell in love with the charismatic stallion. Even though he had never seen him in the flesh, he was completely devoted to the idea of centering his efforts on this very special horse. Bred by James and Judy Sirbasku at Arabians Ltd in Texas, Alixir is a 1998 born son of The Elixir and is out of The Prevue, a daughter of The Minstril. He embodies all the qualities that Jaidah holds in such high esteem: a smooth, balanced body; long, elegant neck; strong, straight legs; a small, chiseled head; and an abundance
His enthusiastic offer led to a lengthy, back-and-forth discussion between Jaidah, Judy, Shawn Crews. About the idea of Jaidah buying Alixir. Judy recalls, “I sensed Mohamed’s desire to preserve and protect the Straight Egyptian horse, particularly the three bloodlines that I, too, am so very partial to. Ultimately, it was after the purchase went through that I knew without a doubt; not only would Alixir be loved, cherished, and protected all his days by Mohamed, but that this man will carry forward— like Judi Forbis, Dr. Nagel, the Marshalls and others did, [and like Judy herself has for almost forty years]—the torch for Egyptian horses. As painful as it may

be to part with one that is so special to you, you have faith in the love and dedication of a young breeder, you want to give them that boost to get started!” It was Mohamed Jaidah’s description of Alixir and why he felt so strongly about him that confirmed Judy’s intuition. For Jaidah, owning Alixir is truly a dream come true. He has already been using him as a sire of choice for years, breeding foals via embryo transfer and securing some of Alixir’s finest offspring from other astute breeders. Jaidah’s options for using his favorite stallion are wide open going forward. Finally, at nineteen years young, Alixir had become the chief sire for Al Jood Stud. It was decided to introduce Alixir to European breeders by standing him at Tolra Training Center in Spain, where he is serving both the Al Jood Stud and outside mares.
The only daughter currently owned by Al Jood Stud is Malak Al Jood, who owes her very existence to Mohamed Jaidah. Long before he purchased Alixir, he had what Shawn Crews calls “almost laser focus” in seeking out all that had to do with his favorite straight Egyptian stallion. As it happened, the legendary mare Miss Maggie Mae gave three embryos in her final year, and Jaidah purchased the rights to one of them to use with Alixir. Crews called the resulting filly “one of today’s most valuable and historically significant young SE mares.” She also pointed out
Malak Al Jood
that not many knew how important that mare’s get and grand-get would be— adding that “Mohamed seemed to almost have a crystal ball!” “Malak was the last or next-to-last foal of Miss Maggie Mae to be born,” Jaidah offers. “I could see no other possible cross for her than Alixir. When I suggested it to Shawn, she said, ‘Good idea!’ The mare had crossed so successfully with Thee Desperado, no one thought of using Alixir. Getting a very nice filly from the cross was the epitome! Like many Straight Egyptians, she is taking a lot of time to mature.
We mainly want to use her as a broodmare. She will be a great addition to my breeding program with her outstanding pedigree.” Currently she is in foal to Kayaan Al Waab, a young and upcoming straight Egyptian stallion at Al Jood Stud for her first foal in 2020. Al Jood Stud in 2019 and 2020 has planned to give Alixir the opportunity with a large selection of both straight Egyptian and Purebred mares to ensure the continuation of the Alixir legacy in the future of the program.

With the passage of each year, new chapters are written in the history of the Arabian horse. From their homeland on the Arabian Peninsula and across the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East, to Europe, Asia, Africa and on across the oceans to Australia and the Americas, each region used stallions and mares not commonly available on other continents, creating unique gene pools and a diverse pallet of choices. In this issue, we pay tribute to an exceptional stallion and some longtime breeders whose programs have endured for many years. Their histories have story lines that represent the evolution from foundation bloodlines into the contemporary fabric of the Arabian breed. You will read of the sensational Nazeer who over a 10-year period at the EAO (1950-1960) stamped his offspring with his unique look, eventually benefitting Egyptian breeding programs all over the world. We also visit Ismer Stud, located in Germany, which has bred Arabian horses from Polish, Russian, and Egyptian bloodlines for 60 years. I’m pleased to include the story of my own family, who founded Cedar Ridge Arabians in Minnesota, USA, over 50 years ago, utilizing a variety of gene pools, many of which have roots in Poland through *Bask and his descendants. With the advent of modern advances in breeding techniques such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer, the semen from popular stallions can be shipped worldwide. Consequently, over the last 10 years, pedigrees have become more intermingled than in the past, with fewer outcross lines to enrich them. It’s important for the future of the breed that we all continue to search for the “next new thing,” but return periodically to pure strains that will infuse future generations with the finest qualities of their ancestors.

Cedar Ridge Arabians was founded by ‌ My parents, Lollie and the late Dick Ames, who have retained the original farm and home since day one.

when they were kids, and my great grandfather imported them from England.
How many Arabian horses are currently standing at Cedar Ridge? How many are halter and how many performance, and what is your favorite part of each division? We started the year with around 150 horses, are down to about 75, and our goal is to be around 50 by the end of the year. We have always loved the Arabian horse and its versatility. We were having about 25 to 30 babies a year, but hope to get this number down to 15, with five each being bred for halter, English and reining. We will be showing horses at U.S. Nationals this year in all of these disciplines. My favorite part of all, is we mostly show horses that we breed. I love watching them from conception to growing and developing. It is easy to go buy them if you have the resources, but not so easy to breed them.

What is the biggest lesson your father taught you regarding breeding Arabian horses? My father was big on numbers; he really felt you had to have the numbers to really know what you had and take the chance, but it also cost a lot of money. Both of my parents really appreciate and appreciated a horse that was conformationally correct, yet beautiful.

Tell us about a project or accomplishment that you consider to be the most significant in the history of Cedar Ridge.
I think being in the industry for 50 years is a major milestone, and I think we have enough family interested, that we will make another 50 years. In today’s world, that is not easy to say!
Who are the most important broodmares that have created their own families at your stud? Two broodmares that stand out are Brassmis (whom we sold), the dam of many successful show and breeding stock, and Afire Inmy Eyes, who produced Ames Mirage and Ames Deja Vu, both going on to produce National Champions themselves in halter and performance; something in today’s industry that is not easy to do.

Perfirka and Perfinka. Tell us about them and how they joined Cedar Ridge. Perfirka came into our world when we were in Poland on a family trip, visiting the State Stud Farms. It was not our goal to purchase a horse, but to us she was a dream. She is very American in her look and people fell in love with her when she came to the U.S. Her daughter, Perfinka, was my father’s last horse transaction, and one I wish he could be sharing in person with mom and I, however, I know he is watching down super proud. She has been more then amazing to have and what a positive light she has been for my mom and I when we needed it.
How are you breeding Perfinka? She has a foal coming next year and we will get one more embryo before her time is up with us.
Is there someone you discuss your breeding decisions with? We appreciate a lot of opinions when it comes to breeding, and some is just doing what has

Cedar Ridge has partnered with David Boggs’ Midwest Arabians in many endeavors. How did this relationship begin and what is the secret of it lasting so many years? My parents were very good friends with David’s parents, and David showed our first top ten and has marketed some great horses for us. It has been really special to have him on Perfinka’s lead for us as well, considering he was on the first cover of AHT when Walter Mishek owned it, with our family’s mare Gai Fawn. What a small world ... I would also like to note that Ted Carson and Andy Sellman began their careers at CRA. They are both like brothers to me and I am so proud of them and all they have accomplished.
Where do you hope to see Cedar Ridge Arabians in 10 years? In 10 years, Cedar Ridge will be doing the same thing, just maybe on a smaller scale; breeding pretty, athletic horses that can compete in both the halter and performance arenas.

ANETERNAL ENDEAVOR Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes, Magnum Psyche & Their Legacy By Bet h E l l e n Hu n z i k e r
Joaquin & Fernando de Santibañes and David Boggs.

In every life, success begins with a vision–a dream–coming in a moment of divine inspiration that sparks a passion that cannot be denied. To achieve success, there must be faith in the vision, and a willingness to dedicate resources and sometimes make difficult decisions, to have that vision become a reality. This is the story of Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes, men of vision. It is also the story of their magnificent estancia, Haras Mayed, their world-famous breeding program, and their stallion, The King of Kings, Magnum Psyche, all of which are realizations of their dreams fulfilled. Why tell of this family’s journey? The purpose is to share these men’s profound love of the noble Arabian horse and, hopefully, to inspire others to take up the challenge of preserving these magnificent creatures, as well as to encourage others to follow their dreams. — Walter Mishek (Magnum Psyche x Dam Name)

“Throughout my career, I have shown many great horses. But Magnum Psyche catapulted me professionally and has had the most profound impact on my life. If I had to pick just one word to describe him, that word would be … gift. Magnum Psyche is a gift. It has been an absolute blessing to share this amazing experience with my dear friends, Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes. Through Magnum, a bond of respect, admiration, love and family was created. Fernando de Santibañes is the most honest, humble, forthright, unpretentious, appreciative person I have ever met. He is a true friend. He loves his children and grandchildren deeply. He’s a great father and grandfather, and for me, he is my inspiration of what a father can be and a great example of what a father should be. It’s no surprise to me that his son, Joaquin, follows in his father’s ways as a humble, honest, kind and genuine person. He is a loving son, a wonderful father and a great friend. Together, they are a strong team. I truly believe the future of Haras Mayed is in good hands and know that Joaquin will continue the work his father started. The last time I saw Magnum Psyche was 2018. Even at 23-years-old he looked majestic, fit, healthy and very happy. Walking the pastures with Fernando and Joaquin, we could see generations of his beautiful offspring. Magnum’s contributions to Haras Mayed–and to the world–are monumental and his legacy is eternal.” —David Boggs, Midwest Training Centre
Haras Mayed – The Evolution Of A Dream The world of international finance is extremely demanding. To bring balance to his life, Fernando de Santibaùes sought a country retreat for his family. He purchased a small, bare piece of land and bought a horse for his children. Unfortunately, with no trees or structures on the property, the horse was stolen. Fernando decided the solution to the problem was to build on the property a house and a barn with proper stalls. Looking back, Fernando remembers the cost of the barn far exceeded the cost of the horse and since he then had a nice farm, he should have nice horses too. Fernando was democratic in choosing the kind of horse the family would have. He allowed everyone a voice for their favorite breed and Arabians won the vote. At the time, Fernando was working with other bankers throughout South America. One Brazilian gentleman named Carmago, happened to breed Arabian horses. Mr. Carmago invited Fernando to an auction he had organized, and as an act of good will, Fernando bought a mare. Shortly after the sale, the mare arrived in Argentina along with three others, and all were in foal.

With the addition of so many horses, Fernando decided they needed more space. He purchased a larger property, a working farm called Haras Mayed, which he immediately
“I started in horses in 1978, a long time ago! I met Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes over 25 years ago. We met at a show in Argentina where we were introduced by mutual friends; people who were also breeders. At that time, Fernando and Joaquin were new breeders. Later, when we met, we always talked about breeding Arabian horses. They asked a lot of questions and I always stressed the importance of structure. Not that beauty and refinement are not important, but structure comes first.
began to renovate and develop. He built a beautiful home
When they bought Magnum Psyche, I was happy to see that he had excellent structure as well as refinement. He also had a pedigree that made it possible for him to transmit those traits. Another thing I like about Magnum is he has a very good mind; he is a kind horse. Also, I like that although he has a lot of “white” in his pedigree, he does not transmit it; in fact, he covers the white. Of course, I used Magnum at Haras Capim Fino and with good success.

To me, Fernando is a great breeder and a great friend. For sure, there is no one else like him. Joaquin is also a special guy–like his father. for his family and stables for his growing number of horses. Wanting to improve the quality of his herd, Fernando attended another auction, the dispersal of the world-famous Arabian horse collection of the Nagib Audi family, where he purchased Brazilian National Champion Padrons Image (Padron x El Nimrah, by El Sirocco). Fernando acknowledges the infinite contributions made by Brazilian breeders to his program and others around the globe. Among those he respects most, is Paulo (Polé) Levy, master breeder, Arabian horse expert, and owner of the pedigrees, conformation, breeding and life! One of the most knowledgeable and influential breeders of his generation, he is always willing to share his experience with others. Polé became a close friend and mentor to both Fernando and Joaquin. It was Polé who introduced Fernando to the American horseman David Boggs, which proved to be a lifechanging moment. Fernando admits to having made his share of uneducated purchases in his early years as a breeder. As his knowledge on the nuances of quality, beauty and conformation. He began to recognize the critical foundation of correct form, which became the cornerstone of his breeding program. Fernando and Joaquin quietly began looking for a stallion to improve their herd. Their goal was to find an individual with superior framework and a proven breeding record. Both would soon discover a priceless treasure that would change their lives and bless them beyond their wildest dreams.

The incredible story of Magnum Psyche cannot be told without including those who most significantly influenced his life. No doubt, the evolution of his life is told best by those who lived it with him, for each has their own special relationship with this great stallion. Magnum Psyche was born May 2, 1995. His breeder, Lank Havice and ex-wife Lisa Havice, owned his dam, A Fancy Miracle (Sasaki x Medina Azahara, by Garbo), a chestnut of straight Spanish bloodlines. At three years of age, she was bred to Padrons Psyche. The following year she produced her first foal–a beautiful chestnut colt.

“I met Fernando de Santibañes at the Brazilian Nationals in 1994. That was 25 years ago, and over that time, we’ve enjoyed a close relationship of many dimensions. I am happy to say that I assisted Fernando, Joaquin and David Boggs through the process of purchasing Magnum Psyche. As the mediator for the negotiations, I quickly learned how passionate they are about their horses and more important to me, realized I was dealing with a man who was intelligent and lives with integrity. I am honored to call him my friend. I will never forget all the trips we’ve made together, talking nonstop about breeding and how to improve his program. I enjoyed helping Fernando find special mares for Magnum, including WA Marlaina Lee (Bey Shah x Hanah Lee, by Valeroso), dam of JJ La Estrella, a fourtime National Champion and twice Reserve National Champion. Magnum Psyche has made huge contributions to Haras Mayed and to the breed. He is the continuation of a great sire line. In my opinion, he is the most beautiful and correct stallion in the line; the most perfect blend possible from his breeding. Haras Mayed has a great breeding program that continues to improve with each generation of Magnum’s offspring. I believe Magnum’s grandson, JJ Aphar, will take their program to a new level. Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes are gifted breeders and awesome men. Among all the people I’ve met through the horses, theirs is a friendship I truly cherish.” —Johnny Downing
the monumental moment that would change his life. “I will never forget the first time I saw Magnum Psyche. I still get chills just thinking about it. I was at the Region 12 Championships, watching the yearling colt class. The second I saw the spectacular colt Jack Crawford led into the arena, I was mesmerized. He was like a tall, long-legged fawn, so refined, so magnificent with his floating, bouncing carriage, peacock tail, and a face to die for with huge black eyes. Even before the class ended, I ran to the out gate and followed them back to their stalls where a line of people wanting to buy the colt began to form. Luckily, I got there first. “At the time, Magnum Psyche was owned in partnership by Lank Havice and Frank Smith. I didn’t even ask to vet the colt; I just wanted to know the price. Jack Crawford said he would have to get back to me about that, but we shook hands and he promised that I could buy the colt. “My friend Glenn Johnson was with me and I advised him to buy the colt as an investment. We went to the hotel, got a check and returned to the show. Within hours, the deal was done. When the show was finished, we loaded up the trailer with the biggest prize of all–Magnum Psyche. “When Magnum arrived at Midwest, I fell in love with him all over again. In my eyes, he was the most perfect horse I had ever seen. I couldn’t believe he didn’t win his class at the Region 12 show–he was second to a beautiful bay colt … named Versace. At that moment, I vowed to him that I would always be at his side and help him to become the champion he was destined to be. “Two weeks later, I took Magnum Psyche to the Ohio Buckeye where he was named Unanimous Junior Champion Colt. Everyone at the show loved him, including John and Tracy Benoit, small breeders from Michigan. They approached me and made an offer for the colt that was more than twice the price Glenn Johnson had paid. By the end of the show, they were the proud new owners of Magnum Psyche. The only stipulation in the sale was their promise to keep him with me at Midwest Training Centre.

“I met Fernando de Santibañes when he was just starting in the horses. I went with some friends to his farm and when he asked my opinion about various horses, I was very honest with him. Apparently, he liked my candor, because later he invited me to tea. We quickly became friends and after I met his sons, I became a close friend of the family. Joaquin is like a son to me and I am Godmother to Francisco’s son.
“I began to prepare Magnum for the United States National Championships. I took him to Region 4 where he was named unanimous AHA Sweepstakes Champion Yearling Colt. The win was another confirmation of my belief in Magnum’s extreme quality. My next goal for him was to win a national title. Three months later, Magnum Psyche was named 1996 Unanimous United States National Champion Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes Yearling Colt with the highest score in points of the show. “From Nationals we set our sights on the Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show. As luck–or destiny–would have it, Magnum slipped off the ramp as he was unloaded from the van and injured his hock. I was sick with worry and made the difficult decision not to show him. I placed him on a program of total rest. I was so committed to Magnum’s recovery, that I personally hand-walked him for months until he was fully sound again. “During that Scottsdale show, Joaquin de Santibañes and Haras Mayed’s farm manager, Ignacio Lopez, visited the farm. They said they were looking for a stallion and I showed them several very successful show horses, but none fit what they were looking for. I didn’t realize it at the time, but Joaquin saw me walking Magnum who was always covered in a blanket and hood. After the show, Magnum and the rest of the horses returned to Minnesota for the summer.
I was thrilled when Fernando bought Magnum Psyche and I am very happy for the remarkable success they have achieved. I used Magnum and his offspring at my farm, Haras La Catalina, with spectacular results. I crossed him on Ludy El Shahller HMR, a daughter of Shahllenger, and got an exquisite colt, LC Prince Magnum, perhaps one of the finest horses I’ve ever bred. I sent him to Scottsdale to be shown by David Boggs. I didn’t want to sell him, so I put a ridiculous price on him. I was shocked when Paul McGlynn of Mystica Arabians accepted the price. I was sad to sell the colt but thrilled when he was named unanimous Scottsdale Champion. It was quite the coup! I crossed Magnum Psyche on daughters of my stallion Legacy of Fame with great success. I also used JJ Señor Magnum, who I liked very much for his beautiful head and special charisma. That resulted in wonderful horses including an exceptional filly I sold to my good friends Janey and Don Morse of Oak Ridge Arabians. Most recently, I purchased a very special filly, bred by Fernando and Joaquin, JJ Apha Petra (JJ Aphar x JJ Perla, by JJ Señor Magnum). I believe she will strengthen my program with her beauty and breeding potential. To me, Fernando de Santibañes and his sons are like family. I am forever grateful for all the adventures, special memories, and our cherished friendship of more than 25 years, and I look forward to many more.” —Lady Gina Pelham, Haras La Catalina

“I have been a huge fan of Magnum Psyche since I first saw him at Region 12 and then again when he was named United States National Champion Yearling Colt. I was among the first to breed to him and I have supported him over the course of his show and breeding career. In fact, I may have been the first to call him, ‘The King of Kings.’
The Undefeated Champion of Haras Mayed Throughout his illustrious show career, Magnum Psyche was undefeated when shown by David Boggs. This dynamic team had a bond that was unbreakable, and, with David at his side, Magnum Psyche was unbeatable. He amassed not one, but five of the most prestigious U.S. National and International titles in the breed.
Magnum Psyche has contributed enormously to my breeding program here at Rohara. I have owned or bred more than 30 Magnum Psyche offspring. This group has accounted for over 21 United States and Canadian National Champions and Reserve Champions, as well as two multiple-International Champions and Reserve Champions. In over 50 years of breeding Arabian horses, the Magnum Psyche offspring have been one of the most successful lines in the show ring and in the breeding barn.
Together Magnum Psyche and David Boggs gave the world
Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes are to be congratulated and thanked for their tremendous contributions through the years. They have been kind, generous, and benevolent guardians of Magnum Psyche, the all-time leading sire of the Arabian breed. Rohara Arabians and countless other farms have benefitted from Fernando and Joaquin’s efforts, and the international Arabian horse community is a better place because of their dedication to their stallion, as well as their commitment to supporting others for the benefit of the breed.”

some of the most thrilling and unforgettable moments in Arabian horse history. “Showing Magnum Psyche to his wins as a yearling–all of them unanimous decisions by the judges, including the titles of Ohio Buckeye Junior Champion Colt, Region 4 AHA Sweepstakes Champion Yearling Colt, and United States National Champion Yearling Colt–were some of the most exciting moments in my life. I think the emotions were so strong because I love Magnum so much and I believe in him so deeply. Every time I won with him was more thrilling than the last. Each time I presented him, he gained more trust in me and confidence delicate young colt, to a breathtaking, mature stallion. The response to him was incredible. With each presentation, his fan club grew bigger and bigger. People couldn’t help but fall in love with him, just like I did. “Magnum was not shown as a two-year-old because of an injury. Only God could make something good come from that tragedy, and I thank God that he was fully healed. During the negotiations to purchase Magnum, his future was discussed. The goal was not only to win another national championship title, but also to promote him to breeders around the world. In 1998, Magnum and I returned to the Ohio Buckeye Sweepstakes Show where he was named Champion Stallion. That year, he was also named Old Dominion Champion Stallion, and Region 15 Champion Stallion. Although Magnum was nominated for the National Futurity, I felt he was ready for open competition … he was more than ready. I can’t describe
the thrill when he was named 1998 Canadian National Champion Stallion and United States National Champion Junior Stallion–both by unanimous decision. He had earned three national championship titles and he was only threeyears-old! “A very important part of our plan for Magnum was to travel to Argentina. In 2000, he made his first trip to Haras Mayed. While he was there breeding mares, we decided to show him too. Magnum Psyche is a tremendous show horse; he loves it. Not only does he have near perfect conformation, extraordinary beauty, and powerful movement, he has incredible charisma and show horse presence. “I met Fernando de Santibañes when we were both attending the University of Chicago and studying at the Department of Economics. There was a group of Latin American students who got together often, and we became friends. After graduating, we stayed in touch. Years later, Fernando visited Chile and we met with old friends from the University, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. In 2003 I bought a farm and some Arabian horses. Later, I began breeding the horses. As we talked about our lives, I learned Fernando was also breeding Arabian horses. This shared passion added another dimension to our friendship. Fernando and I now own a very special mare in partnership, La Reve. She is sired by QR Marc and her dam, Merveille, is a full sister to Fernando’s stallion Magnum Psyche. Fernando is very generous. He is always willing to help others and he’s genuinely happy to see them succeed. In many ways, it seems Fernando and I are like family now. I have some daughters of Magnum Psyche and JJ Señor Magnum, and I will breed some of my mares to Fernando’s young stallion JJ Aphar. Magnum Psyche is known as a great sire because of his contribution the breed. His owner, Fernando de Santibañes, has made many contributions too, as a breeder and as a great friend.” —Jorge Selume, Haras Santa Marta
“In 2004, Magnum and I returned to the American show ring. At nine-years-old, he was in spectacular shape and ready to compete. He was so excited to enter the arena, to hear the cheers of the crowd; it was difficult to hold him back. And he did it again! He gave a flawless performance and was named unanimous United States National Champion Senior Stallion. “We still had one unfulfilled dream for Magnum. In 2009, we brought him back for the biggest show in the world, the Scottsdale All Arabian Horse Show. We wanted him to have the one title that had eluded him and fortunately, God smiled on us. Not only did he win the class for Arabian Breeding Stallions, 8 Years & Older, he was named Scottsdale Champion Senior Stallion and Scottsdale Arabian Supreme Champion. That was the last show for us; Magnum Psyche retired from show ring competition as an undefeated champion with me. “Now, a decade later, the only thing that comes even somewhat close to the joy of showing Magnum Psyche is presenting his beautiful offspring in show rings around the world…”

“In 1986, my wife Debbie and I, bought a farm and some Arabian riding horses for our children. For us, the horses have always been a family affair. Fernando de Santibañes and I have been friends for many years. We met each other through business, and later, through a mutual friend, who started breeding Arabians. I was very happy for Fernando when he bought Magnum Psyche; he really made Haras Mayed famous and their breeding program a success. Magnum earned his fame by adding type, movement and correct conformation to his offspring. Fernando is a great man, intellectually and morally. He is a generous person who tries to help everyone–especially small breeders. His son, Joaquin, has a unique connection with horses; he understands their character as well as their physical conformation. Like his father, Joaquin’s opinions of the horses are very honest and always offered in a kind way. Together, we’re involved in breeding co-operations, which are noncommercial. We exchange stallion services and mares, as well as ideas about how to develop what is best for each breeder’s program. Although I have had great success with my breeding program, including SM Azraff, 2017 United States National Champion Junior Stallion and 2017 Unanimous Scottsdale Champion Senior Stallion, as well as SM Miss Finesse, the 2018 United States National Champion Junior Mare, there is always room to grow. We’re not worried about winning in the show ring–that isn’t the goal–we are focused on doing what is best for the breed. And always, always, our friendship comes first.” —Jorge Stuart Milne, Haras Maalesh

His daughters have also earned their share of worldwide acclaim for their extraordinary beauty and quality, winning national and international championship titles across the globe. Magnum Psyche’s achievements in breeding, the sire of more than 1,288 registered offspring, is unequalled. His status as a progenitor of champions and champion producers is also extraordinary. “We agreed that the best chance for Magnum to become a great sire was for him to remain in America and fulfill the high demand from breeders there. He stayed at Midwest for several years before coming to Argentina. Magnum’s foals in America were very special and we were anxious to see how he would cross with our mares. With the first foal born at Haras Mayed, that being JJ Señor Magnum, our decision was justified 100% and since that time, Magnum has given us many, many special sons and daughters, as well as their children. “In 2019, we celebrate our 30-year anniversary of breeding Arabian horses. When I look out into our fields and see our beautiful mares and their babies, I see the mark of Magnum Psyche everywhere. “Fernando and Joaquin, you are the dearest friends on the face of the earth. I deeply appreciate the trust you place in Midwest, and in me personally, in caring for Magnum Psyche, the king of Haras Mayed, and all of your cherished horses. Your family means the world to me and I truly treasure your friendship.” —Judi Boggs Anderson, Midwest Training Centre Breeding Manager Haras Mayed Trainer and Handler, Arthur Nascimento, with wife Viviene.
“It has been my honor and privilege to work for Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes as their trainer and handler at Haras Mayed for the past 15 years. I began in 2004, and since that time, we have had many wonderful experiences and grown to become like a family. Working with our great team and incredible horses, including Magnum Psyche–the King of Haras Mayed–his son, JJ Señor Magnum, his grandson, JJ Aphar, as well as all our amazing mares, is a dream come true. My wife, Viviane, and our son, Nicolas, and I are truly blessed to be living and working here at Haras Mayed. Even with all the success and special times we have enjoyed together with Fernando, Joaquin and our team, I believe we have great times ahead. I want to say thank you for all the contributions you have made, not only to the Arabian horse breed, but to me and my family.”
The Future Of Haras Mayed When the decision was made to purchase Magnum Psyche, Fernando de Santibañes did it together with his son, Joaquin. Even as a teenager, Joaquin had a discerning eye and an understanding of bloodlines that were beyond his years. Now, decades later, Joaquin’s experience and hands-on work with their horses have sharpened his skills and he has become an internationally respected horseman. This family’s dream of a life with Arabian horses became a reality and the endeavor that began so long ago continues. Joaquin is articulate in sharing their vision for the future. “Without a doubt, Magnum Psyche is the King of Haras Mayed. He was our inspiration in selecting our broodmares that included daughters of Aladdinn, Strike and Bey Shah, including Shah Maali, the dam of JJ Señor Magnum, a National Champion Stallion of Argentina and important sire at our farm. “Our goal as breeders has always been to create foals that are improvements from both their sire and dam. My Inspiration For What A Father Can Be
Fernando and Joaquin de Santibañes are the most honest, humble, forthright, unpretentious and appreciative men I have ever met. They are true friends to the Boggs family, as well as Midwest's extended families. They both love their children and my children deeply. An incredible father and grandfather, Fernando for me, is my inspiration for what a father can be, and a great example of what a father should be. It’s no surprise to me that his son, Joaquin, follows in his father’s ways as a humble, honest, kind and genuine person. Together, they are a strong team. I truly believe the future of Haras Mayed is in good hands, and know that Joaquin and his family will forward his passion of breeding Arabian horses that he and his father started. Magnum's Contributions Are Monumental And His Legacy Is Eternal
The last time I hugged Magnum Psyche was in the fall of 2018. Even at 23 years young, he looks majestic, fit, healthy and very happy. He is in fact, as the story goes ... ”living happily ever after.” Walking the pastures of Haras Mayed with Fernando and Joaquin, we shared in generations of his beautiful offspring. Magnum’s contributions to Haras Mayed— and to the world—are monumental and his legacy is eternal. — David Boggs

T
TWO YEARS AGO, I HAD THE PLEASURE
of meeting Fernando De Santibañes and his wonderful son Joaquin. I have thought long and hard on how to describe this incredible family and quite honestly, think the next few words sum up this amazing team perfectly: If you are ever in the fortunate position to meet such … great, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and down-right ‘lovable’ people in your life such as Fernando and Joaquin, then you are a very lucky person indeed. They will leave a mark on your heart! Their stud in Argentina, Haras Mayed, is a magical place filled with some of the finest examples of Arabian blood you will find in the world. Fernando is a walking, talking knowledge bank on Arabian breeding, with one of the greatest ‘eyes’ for quality there is in the Arabian world. Sitting ringside with him is always a pleasure; I learn something new every day.
One of my personal Arabian highlights was meeting the incredible Magnum Psyche at Haras Mayed, a trip I took with David Boggs, and that cements for me a special friendship for life. I have listened and learnt from the expert advice of Fernando, David Boggs and Walter Mishek, using the special bloodlines of Padrons Psyche, SM Azraff, Equiborn K.A., and of course, the immortal Bey Shah, with some of my mares from incredible bloodlines themselves, and eagerly await my precious bundles next spring. It is a pleasure to say that I have made wonderful and treasured friends in the Santibañes family, and sincerely hope to catch up very soon on our unbridled passion for the Arabian horse, good food and wine, and lest we forget … the falcons with Joaquin! — Heather Webb

All eyes were on the picturesque French town of Menton at the end of June as the Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships took place. Always a highlight of summer, this year was no exception as horses came from far and wide to compete on the beach. The soaring temperatures across France were matched by the action in the show ring, as some of the hottest competitors in recent years vied for the coveted titles. This show is usually seen as an indicator of the title shows at the end of the season, and expectations were high. There is something incredibly relaxed about this event. Classes do not begin until the afternoon on the first day, thus giving spectators time to soak up the sun on the beach, enjoy a long lunch in one of the many beachfront cafes next to the show grounds, and also catch up with clients and friends. As show time gets closer, there is a burble of excitement in the air, as many different languages merge to form one common dialect—the Arabian horse. The Junior Female Championship was full of quality. Taking the Silver title was the captivating bay beauty Eralda (Emerald x Enezja), bred in Poland by Falborek Arabians and owned by Al Shiraa Arabians in Abu Dhabi. Eralda has a way of dancing around the show ring that ensures all eyes are upon her, and it was with great delight that she was awarded the Silver. Taking Bronze Junior Female honours was Algamra (AJ Portofino x Ava Maryia), bred in the U.S. by Dr. Hugh and Alexandra Hodsman, and owned by Al Sheikh Stud of Israel. This extremely pretty grey filly is maturing beautifully, and her time will definitely come. Both fillies are incredibly feminine and deserved their awards amid such strong competition. One of the most beautiful mare championships followed. The horses were breathtaking, and it was a joy to see them lined up together. Taking the Bronze Senior Female Championship was the ethereal straight Egyptian mare, Maisa Al Nasser (Sinan Al Rayyan x Zenubia Al Nasser), bred and owned by Al Nasser Stud in Qatar. This is an extremely proud mare who loves to move, and she showed herself majestically before the judges to take this prize. I can be tough for straight Egyptians to compete in open competition, but Al Nasser horses bend this rule time and time again, as evidenced here with Maisa’s bronze.

Among the yearling colts, Zuhayr Al Shaqab (SMA Magic One x Kahlah Al Shaqab) made a dynamic entrance into the show ring before floating around the arena to secure the Silver Yearling Male Championship. Owned and bred by Al Shaqab Stud in Qatar, this bay yearling is a lovely example of their future breeding program, as they bring in outside blood to use over their homebred proven pedigrees. Al Shaqab has always enjoyed great success at Menton, and this show was no exception. HL El Ganador added the Gold Junior Male Championship to his growing collection. Bred in Chile by Haras Lonco, this superlative colt—whose name actually translates as the winner—is owned by Hanaya Stud in Switzerland. At a glance, his pedigree is not all that familiar, but look a little further back and there are many familiar faces. By HP Shakir TE (LC Farid x Destinee) and out of Lonco Baby Maria (HP Emir x ZT Highromit), HL El Ganador always commands audiences and judges alike. Now 3 years of age, he has won a host of gold titles across Europe and the Middle East and he must surely be a contender for some of the big prizes later in the year. HL El Ganador is a very typey colt and it will be interesting to see how he breeds on. Another multiple champion taking to the ring was Shanghai EA (WH Justice x Salymah), this time in the Senior Male Championship. This is a horse that has done it all but who still enjoys showing off whenever there is an audience around. Not only has Shanghai EA been a great show horse, he is also a proven sire, something that does not always go hand in hand, and he is, without doubt, one of the most important horses of our generation. Bred by Equus Arabians in Spain, Shanghai EA is owned by Ajman Stud in the United Arab Emirates and, under the glorious Mediterranean sunshine, he took an almost unanimous Gold Senior Male title. There is no doubt that the Menton show always brings that bit of glamour—helped, in no small part, by its amazing location and the stunning backdrop of the old town, the mountains, and the sea, depending on which way you look. It really is a special place and, if you are after summer sunshine, then where better to go than this beautiful town, where you can watch Arabian horses on the beach and see peoples’ dreams come true.
