AHT Abroad is pleased to once again offer our annual tribute to straight Egyptian and Egyptian-related horses. From long before the earliest mention of exotic desert horses by breeders who traveled from Europe, the Americas, and realms of the Middle East to see them, Egyptian-bred horses have been valued for their purity of blood traceable to desert origins. Exquisitely refined, with classically dished faces, charismatic presence, and banner tails, the Egyptian Arabian horse has been both preserved and improved through the dedication of like-minded breeders from all over the world.

In this issue, we share the memories, insights, and opinions of an assortment of breeders on topics ranging from their programs’ foundations to the fate of the straight Egyptian in the larger world of the Arabian horse. We honor the life and remarkable production record of one of the breed’s greatest mares, The Vision HG, through a fascinating illustrated production timeline. We interview Sheikh Saoud Al Thani, who in founding his own breeding program, SA Arabians, is following in the footsteps of his father, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Thani, himself founder of the Emir of Qatar’s Al Rayyan Farm. We also ask Cornelia Tauschke of El Thayeba Stud to reveal to us her breeder secrets, and report on the 2019 Egyptian Event Europe and the Egyptian Event USA. Central to the 2019 USA Event, held August 28-31, in Lexington, Kentucky, was the theme of longevity, highlighted by the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Pyramid Society. Organizations such as the Society and gatherings like the Egyptian Events provide settings for longtime bonds to be forged and strengthened between people who believe in both the protection of and development of Egyptian bloodlines. Through their dedication and diligence, straight Egyptian bloodlines will be ensured in the future.

T

he 2019 edition of the Egyptian Event Europe recently held at the medieval Castle Lowenstein, in Germany, marked by all means another successful chapter in the story of Abhaa Arabians. Three marvellous samples of Straight Egyptians from Mr. Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain’s famous herd in Kuwait, got top places at the Final Championships on Sunday, 11th August. In the Yearling Fillies category, first on the podium Gold medal champion AB Deem (Al Ayal AA x Dalal Zamani).

This beautiful and elegant young Lady is proudly bred and owned by Abhaa Arabians. Her mother is the very beautiful and many times champion Dalal Zamani also owned by Abhaa Arabians. In the Senior Mares Category, Gold medal champion Hikayet Hob AA (Al Ayal AA x Hamdiyah AA). Hikayet Hob AA was not only the Gold medal winner but also the Best in Show in strong competition. The domination of beautiful Abhaa Arabians owned horses was quite manifest at the Egyptian Event Europe 2019 althou-

gh the three female contenders led by Italian handler Paolo Capecci had to go through a big battle in the classes to qualify to the finals, with some incredible high and tightly close to each other scores. However, it was AB Deem and her older stable girlfriends Asinaat Sa and Hikayet Hob AA, all so feminine and great moving representatives of unique Straight Egyptian type, who happened to be the most successful horse of this year’s edition of the Egyptian Event Europe. At the Egyptian Event Bergamo just one week ago the hidden treasure D

Tamjeed has been crowned Gold Champion Yearling Filly 2019. Abhaa Arabians is very proud on her recent result. Also on this occasion, Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain’s methodology on breeding proved to be a successful one. There are over 25 horses in his herd, each one of them are specially selected to support Al Babtain’s vision and his precious collection of Straight Egyptian horses. And if everything keeps going this well, we will acclaim other champions coming from his outstanding breeding program very soon.

It was during Eid when four-legged beauty Hikayet Hob AA conquered the European crown of straight Egyptian mares at the Egyptian Event Europe in front of the most splendid castle Löwenstein. Another touch of the Orient was contributed by her counterpart, the stallion SM Bariq, who was named Best in Show–Male. Amidst old trees in the 16-hectare English park with almost one kilometer of riverbank on the Main lies the castle Löwenstein, about one-and-a-half-hours away from Frankfurt Airport. After Lanaken and castle Dyck, Löwenstein was the new event venue for this year’s Egyptian Event Europe (EEE). With its magnificent, threewinged country castle, Löwenstein provided a magnificent backdrop. The castle in the Main grassland was designed by court architect Louis Rémy de la Fosse in the style of the late French Baroque. The residential construction is characterized by the twelve-spoke wheel windows. Two pavilions facing west are flanking the main courtyard; formerly the Marstall and the Leibgarde resided there. Nowadays, castle Löwenstein is not only a winery and a conference hotel, but foremost the home of the lord of the manor, Alois Konstantin Fürst zu Löwenstein, and his family. The family zu Löwenstein acquired the property as early as 1721. In the main part of the three-wing complex is the marble hall with a ceiling painting by Ambrosius Reith, which celebrates the victory of the virtues over the vice.

In the run-up to EEE, Bettina von Kameke, president of the Pyramid Society Europe, organized a lecture about the many possibilities of reproductive technology which was sponsored by Kuwait’s state stud farm Bait Al Arab. Comments from visitors received were positive regarding the classy background and the comfortable sleeping quarters directly in the castle, close to the showground. The stylish surrounding did not take away from the friendly and familiar atmosphere. The EEE is not only about show and seminar, but it has also become a social meeting point. Talking to each other, meeting people who usually do not join other shows, is an important reason for many international visitors to travel long distances. The experienced panel of judges awarded Unanimous Gold Champion Senior Mare to 2014 born Hikayet Hob AA. Bred by Ariela Arabians, the shimmering white mare is proudly owned by Ahmad Abdulaziz Albabtain of Abhaa Arabians, Kuwait. Hikayet Hob AA was also named Best in Show–Female, thanks to the highest score of the show with 132,25 points, including unanimous 20s for Head and Type. Being an Al Ayal AA daughter out of Hamdiyah AA, Hikayet Hob AA traces back on both sides of her pedigree to outstanding broodmare supreme, The Vision HG. The aforementioned 5-year-old stallion SM Bariq (Sameh Al Rayyan x Shawq Al Nasser), already a show champion at the 2017 SEWC in Milan, accomplished Gold Champion Senior Stallion along with his Best in Show–Male honor for proud breeder and owner Salman Stud, KSA. His exclusive pedigree combines some of the most stunning straight Egyptian mares in recent years like RN Farida, Bint Saida Al Nasser, Ansata Majesta and Ansata Samantha. The Best Breeders Worldwide award was given to Al Shaqab Stud which took home two Gold, three Silver, and one Bronze championship. None of this could conceal the fact that one of the most prestigious competitions for straight Egyptian horses has had genuine difficulties when it comes to its number of entrants. Participating horses fell to under 60. Not even a new initiative of the organizers–a chance for Europeans to

THE PYRAMID SOCIETY’S GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

by THERESA CARDAMONE

Since 1981, the Pyramid Society has hosted the Egyptian Event in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Devoted to the promotion of straight Egyptian Arabian horses, over the years it has become a model for similar Events held in countries around the world. The 2019 edition of the Egyptian Event was especially meaningful as the Pyramid Society was celebrating its Golden Anniversary. The Society’s Executive Director, Cynthia Culbertson, is proud of that achievement. “For an organization dedicated to a specific bloodline of Arabian horses to have such longevity is rare,” she says. “In a larger context, the vision of the Society’s founders to preserve and protect these invaluable bloodlines has been an overwhelming success for 50 years.” This year’s Golden Anniversary Celebration was graciously sponsored by Bait Al Arab, the Kuwait State Stud, while many other generous sponsors from the United States and around the world supported the Event and several of its hallmark activities. Noted artist Karen Kasper, whose stunning bronze portrait of KA Damascus was unveiled at this year’s Event, has been attending ever since the first Egyptian Event in 1981. “It was truly magical,” she recalls. Judith Forbis with representatives of Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud, Mohammed Al Omar, Nasser Al Ghaith and Abdullah Albraihi. Bait Al Arab graciously sponsored the Golden Anniversary Celebration at the 2019 Egyptian Event. Sandro Pinha was presented with the “Handler of Excellence” award for the 2019 Egyptian Event.

“There were over 50 straight Egyptian stallions that I had only seen in magazines, all brought together for the first time. El Hilal, Tuhotmos, Farazdac … it was a thrill I’ll never forget.” The Stallion Showcase is still an integral part of the Egyptian Event and includes opportunities for people to come down to see the horses up-close-and-personal, ask questions, and get a hands-on experience with straight Egyptian Arabian horses themselves. In addition to the annual horse show, the Event always includes a number of educational elements. “One of the highlights this year was Joe Ferris’ presentation,” Kasper shares. “I daresay there are few people in the breed with his encyclopaedic knowledge of the Egyptian lines. He has travelled all over the country and personally filmed many Egyptian horses that are now a part of our history books. Joe’s presentation was very well attended—a walk back through 50 years of the Pyramid Society story— enjoyed by everyone present.” There was also a panel discussion peopled by some of the most prominent names in straight Egyptian Arabian breeding: Judith Forbis, Omar Sakr, Janice Bush and Jody Cruz. “It’s always great to see so many friends every year,” says Kasper. “It was like being at a family reunion. Everyone was relaxed and happy and could appreciate that this organization has stayed strong for such a long period of time when many breed organizations have not.” Set in the world-famous Kentucky Horse Park, the Egyptian Event is visited by horse lovers of all kinds, which offers a golden opportunity to display the unique qualities of Arabian horses to people outside the breed. One special workshop showcased the intelligence and willingness of Arabian horses to work with humans. “Andres Castaño and Patrick Sullivan held a four-session seminar, ‘Glorious Geldings: Creating the Ultimate Equine Partner,’” Culbertson explains. “They took two completely untrained Egyptian Arabian geldings and showed their intelligence and trainability using natural horsemanship techniques. In each session, a bit more work was done. By the end of the show, they actually entered the arena riding the geldings.” The horse show includes the hallmark Egyptian Breeders’ Challenge, an amateur-to-handle halter competition for offspring created through breedings purchased in a previous Event’s stallion service auction, with significant prize money up for grabs. Overall, the quality of the horses at this year’s show was exceptional—an opinion shared by all who attended. Caiiro (Alixir x Good Faith) won both the Senior Champion Straight Egyptian Stallion title and the Most Classic Head award for owner Gail Ahrens, and Senior Champion Straight Egyptian Mare HC Abla El Saghira (Ali Reshan x Ravenwood Sensation)

did the same for her owner, Debby Hurdle. Junior Champion Straight Egyptian Colt and Most Classic Head winner for owner Sharon Redman was Sentebale SA (Bellagio RCA x Kareena RCA) and the Junior Champion Straight Egyptian Filly award went to Ghuwa Al Rayyan (Ashhal Al Rayyan x Turkiya Al Rayyan), for Al Rayyan Stud. Additional championships are held for Egyptian-sired horses, with the Egyptian-sired Champion Stallion title going to TF Dakkar (Botswana x CP Dakhota), who is proudly owned by Allison Mehta. The Egyptian-sired Champion Mare title went to AJS Sigis Belle (Marajh KA x Om El Badra), who is bred and owned by Al Jood Stud of Qatar. “Sigis Belle got the best of both parents,” says Al Jood owner Mohamed Jaidah. “And given that she so much represents the Om El Arab breeding philosophy, we decided to name her in honour of our dear friend, the late Sigi Siller. After AJS Sigis Belle conquered the 2018 Egyptian Event, she returned in 2019 to once again be crowned unanimous Gold Champion Egyptian-Sired Female. We are thrilled.”

While the Egyptian Event is clearly about the horses, it is equally clear that it is cherished for its value as a connection between people. The annual gala dinner, held at the Embassy Suites, was structured differently this year to promote more mingling and socializing. For example, rather than seat people around assigned tables of eight or ten, food stations were strategically located to encourage people to move about and join different conversation groups while they were enjoying the delicious repast. A highlight of the evening was a special anniversary film sponsored by a group of Kuwaiti straight Egyptian breeders. During the course of the Event, the Society offered a gathering place with a special 50th Anniversary video tribute that played continuously. They also offered another viewing station where all of the films ever produced by the Society were available to watch. “It was really fun to go by those chairs and see people laughing and pointing and having fun, celebrating the history and the people,” Culbertson reflects. “Today, straight Egyptian Arabian horses are being bred all around the world and continue to be a great influence within the larger Arabian breed. This means that the original mission of the Pyramid Society to preserve these horses because they are a special bloodline group should be celebrated. It is a mission accomplished.” “My takeaway was how important the relationships are; the people, the history,” Cynthia Culbertson remarks. “That’s really what makes it great. To see people greeting other breeders from around the world or those who live closer but that you haven’t seen in a while. That camaraderie makes it really special.” Karen Kasper couldn’t agree more. “The camaraderie and mutual sharing of what we believe is so wonderful about these horses is what I look forward to every year. Many of us are getting to the age where we appreciate lifelong friendships, and some of the relationships that I value most in my life have been formed sharing the straight Egyptian Arabian horse with those who love it— at Egyptian Events past and present, and with its many dedicated breeders across the globe.”
