It is our mutual love of the Arabian horse that brings us together, regardless of our backgrounds, nationalities, and cultural heritage. Somehow, the soft, dark eyes of a sweet mare can open our hearts in a split second, no matter what fear or experiences have kept that heart from truly beating up to that point. The Arabian horse carries a special magic that envelopes us and captures our imagination; a magic that encourages us to take a leap of faith and step outside of ourselves. It is the indefinable “glue” that bonds us in all of our diversity. I am proud and humble to have spent my life promoting the Arabian breed. Whether as an exhibitor, breeder, or magazine publisher, it has been a pleasure to devote myself to that endeavor. And as 2019 rolls into spring, I look forward to the next conversations, the next competitions, and the next champions that will emerge into the spotlight. Most importantly, I look forward to the new human connections that are certain to play a big part in the coming year. It is a privilege to help bring our community even closer together through Arabian Horse Times and AHT Abroad. It is my fervent hope that within these pages, we will continue to learn and care about each other as we celebrate the glory that is the Arabian horse.

Richard J. “Dick” Ames, United States businessman and longtime Arabian horse breeder and amateur showman, died Wednesday morning, January 30, 2019, in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was 89. There were few people in the Arabian industry who did not know, or at least know of, Dick. His mega-personality was as memorable as his many achievements in life. Dick was born and raised in Farmington, Minnesota, the eldest of eight children born to Chester and Ruby (Reisinger) Ames. He and his siblings worked the family farm, where they learned the value of hard work, honesty, and a commitment to “family first” that would carry through a lifetime. In 1962, Dick founded Ames Construction. With his son, Larry, Dick’s brother, Butch, and later, brothers John, Tom and Ron, along with their nephew Mark Brennan, they built Ames Construction into one of the premiere heavy civil and industrial general contracting companies in the nation. Dick married twice and had five children. It was with his second wife, Georgiann “Lollie” Ames, whom he married in 1968, that he pursued an interest in Arabian horses, founding their Cedar Ridge Farms, in Jordan, Minnesota, in the early 1970s. They have been prolific breeders, principally of Arabian English Pleasure and halter horses, and have shown extensively in most divisions, with Dick excelling at amateur driving. In the late 1970s, he was one of the founders of the Minnesota Medallion Futurity, and later, as he enjoyed competing in reining, he became one of three founders of the Arabian Reining Futurity. Dick is a twice APAHA Amateur Showman of the Year recipient, and along with his wife, Lollie, is being honored with the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award for their contributions to the Arabian industry. Dick also raised and showed championship Percheron draft horses—a tradition deeply rooted in the Ames family history. Located adjacent to Cedar Ridge Farms, the Ames Percherons are symbols of strength, a strong work ethic and teamwork, serving as official

ambassadors of Ames Construction since 1993, and appearing at countless community events. The stately 4-, 6-, and 8-horse hitch teams deliver awardwinning performances in competitions and exhibitions throughout the United States and Canada. In addition to his business and equine commitments, Dick also maintained interest in farming, the timeless value of raising crops and livestock again expressing his concept of a productive life. “He was a builder—at Ames, with his horse farms, in his life,” said McBride. “The very center of his life was his family, and it was the core of who he was, from generations to now. He used that same model in his other endeavors and his business. He said more than once, ‘I was always able to find really good people and let them to do their jobs.’ “That was his secret of his success,” McBride added. He put the effort into finding good people, and then he let them do what they did best. He had a way of making them feel that they were important and valuable and had something to contribute.” For all of his accomplishments, Dick was known for simply being Dick—larger than life, well-meaning, fearless in saying what he believed, and supporting causes he cared about with a legendary reputation for his generosity. Dick had a quick smile, infectious laugh, and always extended a warm handshake to everyone he met. We celebrate Dick Ames—an unforgettable character who lived every day of his life to the fullest. Dick stayed physically active until he was hospitalized in early January for a backache and remained sharp as a tack until the day before he passed away from pneumonia. “I’ve lived a fairytale life,” he observed just a few days before. “I’ve surrounded myself with remarkable people and lived a very full life. ome horses are destined for greatness; changing the history of breeding by creating offspring who extraordinarly excel. These horses are rare and we are blessed when they are born and given the opportunity to pass on their greatness. On the 23rd of April 1985, one of those legendary horses was born in Oregon, USA, when a chestnut, charismatic colt came into the world. His breeders, Dick and Kay Patterson, had high hopes for this foal as he was sired by their homebred chief-sire Negatraz (Bask x Negotka), and out of the Russian-bred mare with a stellar production record in Russia, Monogramma (Knippel x Monopolia). The colt, named Monogramm, was sold to Bill, Meredith and Shilo Bishop as a yearling. Named U.S. National Reserve Champion Futurity Colt in October 1988, it was there in Louisville, Kentucky, that Director Jawarowski of Michalรณw State Stud in Poland, and Inspector of Horse Breeding in Poland, Izabella Pawelec-Zawadzka, A HT Abroad

saw Monogramm for the first time. They were both impressed, and Director Jawarowski knew that this was the colt he had been waiting for to bring back; not only the blood of Bask (Witraz x Bałałajka), but also the valuable blood of the great mare Mammona (Ofir x Krucica). They approached the Bishops about the possibility of leasing Monogramm and in October 1992, Monogramm was on his way to Poland for two years. Monogramm´s first foal crop at Michalów born in 1993, exceeded all expectations with offspring like Ekstern, Ganges, Zagrobla, Eskalopka, Palestyna, Kordelas and Georgia. The impact of his offspring could be seen at the Polish National Show in 1995 when they dominated the Yearling Fillies class; all were blown away by these beautiful, great moving fillies. Monogramm added so much to the Michalów breeding program, and today, most Polish-bred horses at the state studs have Monogramm in their pedigree. “I will never forget my first meeting with the American stallion everyone was talking about,” shares Anette Mattsson. “It was in August 1993, and I totally fell in love when I walked into his stall at Michalów and he turned his beautiful head to me. He was unique and nothing I had ever seen before. I wanted to meet him again, but it was not until 20 years later when the opportunity arose to visit the Bishops. The person instrumental in getting Monogramm to Poland, my dear friend Izabella PawelecZawadzka, had not seen him either since his time in Poland, so it was a very emotional meeting for all of us.” Monogramm passed away quietly on the 16th of January 2019, at the age of 34 in the loving care of Shilo Bishop. Thank you, Monogramm, for passing on your greatness to your amazing offspring; a true legend that surpassed all expectations and created greatness beyond all visions. A HT Abroad

The world we live in is amazing but underestimated often. Just imagine, every day we could be experiencing something that may go down in history and not even know it. The 2018 World Championships in Paris where filled with just such magic of first-time experiences and definitely will go down in history.

Possibly, most people expected “business as usual” at the World Championships, held under the patronage of His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, at the Paris Nord Villepinte Exhibition Centre. Still, the highlight of the European show season never ceases to amaze and provided some positive surprises.
World Championships in the same season. Never before has one farm gone home with two Triple Crown winners. The truly unique AJ Samara (AJ Mardan x Sama AM) took World Gold Champion Yearling Filly and the Triple Crown award in the process. It is already the second Triple Crown winner sired by the only 7-years-old sire AJ Mardan after AJ Azzam in 2015. And then the next sensation … two in a row for Ajman Stud! The RFI Farid daughter HDM Maria Apal, out of WW Mania Apal, receives World Gold Champion Junior Filly, again alongside Frank Spönle. But all good things come in threes! Admiraal, out of Haniyyah, was ready to rule Paris and he indeed was in command. The bay yearling colt not only received a full range of 20s for his fantastic movements, but also the third Gold Champion title for Ajman Stud and the second 2018 Triple Crown. Moreover, Admiraal allowed his proud handler, Rod Jones, to relish the

Ajman Stud’s Admiraal with Rod Jones experience of his first Gold at the World Championships. Rod and his brother, Ryan, are marketing and showing for Al Muawd Stud. They discovered the outstanding qualities of Admiraal and decided to show him for Al Muawd Stud. When Admiraal was sold to Ajman Stud, Rod asked if he may keep showing the colt. “Admiraal is a show machine. I understand how he is, how he shows, and I am happy Sheikh Ammar agreed,” says Rod, who also showed Admiraal’s sire Emerald J in the UAE. Most of these experiences we can’t possibly understand without experiencing them ourselves. We can imagine how we might feel, but we can’t actually know. Glenn Schoukens knows how his dear brother, Tom felt, when he won his first World Gold Championship this past November. Glenn closed out a very successful season by showing the lovely Anood Al Nasser to World Gold Champion Senior Mare. A success that not only made Glenn proud, but also Anood’s breeder, Al Nasser Stud of Qatar, and her owner, Akmal Stud, Saudi Arabia; another first it being the first Gold Championship for Akmal Stud’s owner, HRH Prince Abdulmajeed Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Glenn also showed ES Sarab for Emirates Stud. The splendid stallion won his class and came close to winning a championship.

One more handler experienced his first Gold at the World Championships. Winning Gold Champion Senior Stallion with Equator (out of Ekliptyka) brought Frenchman Raphael Curti to tears. The QR Marc son obviously was the crowd’s favorite, accomplishing Gold for his leasee Al Sheikh Stud, Israel, another premier. It was not the first Gold for Israel, however; the global player Ariela Stud had already won World Championship honors before. This year Ariela Arabians’ excellent sire Al Ayal AA (by Al Ayad) took home Bronze Senior Stallion honors, and his son Arraab Aljassimya, debuting in Paris, won Silver Champion Yearling Colt,

For 25-year-old Miles Buckley, the World Championships held first precious metal. “Winning World Bronze Champion Yearling Colt with Duke Santonio ME was the most amazing moment,” Miles laughs. “It makes everything the team and I do worthwhile; it really was a dream come true.” Nicolas Frere celebrated his first medal, too, by winning World Bronze Champion Junior Colt with Gabel Athbah. Another winner made headlines: Al Orasia Stud’s Israa AH accomplished World Bronze Champion Yearling Filly, the first medal for her homeland Bahrain. Contrary to this, Al Shaqab Stud and manager Sheikh Hamad bin Ali Al Thani are spoilt by success. World Championships won by Al Shaqab are countless. In addition, since 2010, every Senior World Champion Stallion has been a Marwan Al Shaqab son or grandson. Sheikh Hamad insisted on showing Kahil Al Shaqab himself for the title of Platinum World Champion Male, much to the delight of many spectators. “Our hats are off to you, sir,” globally renowned photographer Javan Schaller wrote on social media. “It takes a lot of guts for an owner to present his own stallion of this caliber in Paris. How exciting it was for us to watch his presentation without missing a beat!”

The title of Platinum World Champion Female went to the immortal 14-year-old Emandoria (x Emanda), a truly regal mare from Michalow’s E-family and another representative of the Gazal Al Shaqab legacy. The result of mating two World Champions, she is herself a World Champion and winner of the 2013 Triple Crown.

After winning World Gold Champion Yearling Colt in 2016, D Seraj came back to win again. Bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud, the FA El Rasheem son is a maternal half-brother to the World Silver Champion Junior Filly D Ajayeb, out of Ladi Veronika. It was a great accomplishment for Dubai Arabian Horse Stud who also earned the Best Breeder Award.
D Seraj, bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud while his dam Om El Aisha Aljassimya also achieved Silver in the Senior Mares. Hanaya Stud’s Wadad Zamani (Laheeb x Zena Al Buraq) always gives an impressive appearance; attested by her numerous championship titles earned. In Paris, Wadad Zamani added Bronze Champion Senior Mare to her vast collection. The World Championships are about amazing horses, meeting old friends and making new ones. This year even saw a wedding proposal in center arena. It is an atmosphere where one can soak up horse events taking place in five areas within the complex, as well as horserelated shopping. It is small world unto itself. The world we live in today is amazing and underappreciated; not only at the World Championships, but every day, where we may have the opportunity to participate in something historical. Take your time and appreciate everything good in life, because you never know when the world will hand you an amazing experience.

he air is filled with the melody and rhythm of typical Arabic music, the sounds of flute, bass drum, ghaita and rebec. As alive as the music, is the atmosphere of the Prince Sultan Arabian Horse Festival (PSAIAHF). The place is filled with women in their black abayas; families enjoy a leisure day against the backdrop of music, playgrounds and food trucks. Horses inny and an enthusiastic crowd applauds. The PSAIAHF is the first ECAHO title show of 2019 and held under the patronage of HRH Prince Khaled Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who opened the doors of His Al Khalediah Farm in Tebrak, west of Riyadh, for five days. The organizers followed a trend in Saudi Arabia; turning Arabian horse shows into festivals to gain more attention and bring new people into the scene with their family friendly atmosphere. Championship honors lure horse owners and breeders, but prize money of 1.2 million Euro, also helps. From 1st to 7th place, owners received a valuable amount of prize money. Senior Gold Champions were awarded 700.000 Saudi Riyal (around 165.000 Euro).

With the Middle East’s show season currently at its high—Gulf countries enjoy nearly two shows a week—only a few international competitors joined the PSAIAHF, however, Kuwaiti breeders underlined their enthusiasm by competing successfully at the show. Al Khashab Stud was in front in the Junior Fillies Championship. It was a tough competition; so many beautiful, top-class fillies, several of them already accomplished show champions. The EKS Alihandro daughter Rshediah Alkhashab (x Symphony Of Love) walked away with Gold. In addition, Nebras Al Hamad (Fadi Al Shaqab x Alnoor Al Hamad) won Bronze Champion Yearling Colt for Al Hamad Stud. Abdulwahab and Khalid Alsayed of Al Sayed Stud, KSA, enjoyed great success as well. Within just ten years’ time, the Alsayed brothers have built a stunning breeding program and rank amongst the global players. At the PSAIAHF, Al Sayed Stud took home seven medals, no less than four of them Gold. Underlining the importance of great genes,

Krystal Tiara Dosar Al Sayed (Yearling Colts) and his dam Delight’s Divah RB (Senior Mares) claimed Gold, as well as father and son, Maher Al Sayed ( Junior Colts) and Alexxanderr (Senior Stallions), where Al Sayed’s senior sire, the stunning Eden C claimed Bronze. Eden C in turn sired the Silver Yearling Colt, Shaheen AM out of the well-known Abha Palma, bred and owned by Al Mohamadia Stud. Like so often at shows, the senior mare classes were a special delight to watch; the crowd witnessing a string of international show champions. Among the class winners was the nearly 18-year-old Krystal Tiara, by Ekstern, a flea-bitten beauty who won her class with grace and floating movement. And as always, the competition was tough. In the end, the 2018 PSAIAHF Gold Champion Junior Filly Venice MI (Allegiance MI x Valentine MI) returned to the show ring to compete in the senior section, achieving Silver behind the aforementioned Delight’s Divah RB, while a third chestnut, Tahani Al Khaled (MCA Magnum Gold x LC Tornita), took home the Bronze. Not only were the senior mares outstanding, but the juniors, too. More than 60 yearling fillies were presented to the judges with Adwaa Al Arab as the high scorer. Proudly bred and owned by Mr. Ali Bin Mohammed Bin Ali Al Ali of Al Arab Stud, this enchanting yearling inherits her bay colour from her sire Emerald J. Nimbly dancing, Adwaa Al Arab also earned Gold Champion Yearling Filly; music to many ears and a fulfilling end to another great show. Khalid Alsayed
