Hiyam is a 2013 daughter of Magic Dream CAHR and out of FS Hibah El Perseus, by Perseus El Jamaal. She is Elegant, correct and distinctly feminine, Hiyam has already given Jaidah a treasure in Haneen Al Jood, a breathtaking 2018 daughter of Hakeem Al Shaqab (Thee Desperado x Abha Myra). Haneen holds the distinction of being among the first of the 2nd-generation Al Jood-bred foals. Al Jood Stud has repeated their success with a fullsibling to Haneen in 2019, an exquisite colt was born named Alada’am Al Jood.
For next year Hiyam Al Jood will be bred to Marwan Al Shaqab for a 2020 foal. Jaidah has high hopes for Hiyam Al Jood’s future breeding career as Haneen Al Jood will make her way to Europe for the 2020 show season under the care of Tolra Training Center in Spain.

An Early Holiday Gift—Paris In December What is better than attending a horse show in Paris during the holiday season? Okay, I admit, that’s a First World question. There are many things more important than being in Paris for the Salon du Cheval (achieving global peace and finding a cure for cancer come to mind, but they’re beyond my scope). In my business, being in Paris in late fall has been a constant for some time, and this year, I’m disappointed that for family reasons, I’ll have to miss the World Championships. I urge any Arabian horse lover who has not attended the Salon to plan a trip. Maybe it’s not convenient for your calendar or budget now, but make sure to put it on your bucket list and do it sooner than later.

First, of course, there are the world class horses you see there; top American horses have long competed in Paris, making this show an extraordinary opportunity to compare the type and quality of representatives from many different countries. Second, the show’s ambience is just unbeatable. For decades, conventional wisdom has said that the English are the best at pageantry—and they are incredible. But if you’ve ever attended the Salon, you know that the French have a style of their own, and when they turn on the “pomp and circumstance,” they are experts. Every time the music comes up before the classes, I get a tingle, because it clearly announces that the horses to come are royalty. Everyone in the arena can feel important because they have the privilege of being there, to be seeing great Arabians. To me, the awarding of the championships on the final Sunday is especially thrilling. If you go, I hope you will agree with me that while the Salon du Cheval doesn’t draw the number of Arabian horse exhibitors that many of the world’s other signature shows do, that doesn’t matter. It has so many of the best of the best, and it is all about celebrating the Arabian breed. If that’s not enough for you, just count in the other benefits of Paris which can be enjoyed if you add a day or two to your trip—the shops, the restaurants, the fashion, the atmosphere of one of the world’s great cities, all against a backdrop of glittering Christmas lights and decorations. It’s magical.

The most special and beautiful moments in one’s life will always inevitably slip beyond grasp and move to memory, despite wanting to hold onto them for as long as possible. That’s life, but you can always trust that more exciting moments will emerge every year, and the 2019 All Nations Cup (ANC) was no exception, filled with many highlights to remember.

It was the loudness from the audience on Sunday morning—reserved for the senior mares and stallions—that left no doubt they were thrilled about the four-legged beauties shown. Eyes were filled with tears of joy, including this author’s. Each class winner, 2nd or 3rd place, would have been a worthy champion, not to mention the subsequent mares. Four excellent classes were filled with superior quality. Eight out of ten horses qualified for the championship were bred by Polish state stud farms. Among them, the remarkable Ekspulsja, now owned by Halsdon Arabians, who doesn’t look her age (15). The Gazal Al Shaqab daughter won her class with style and the high score of all mares. With a clear lead, Maisa Al Nasser took Gold and proved straight Egyptians can compete on the highest level. It was an amazing success for proud breeder and owner Sheikh Nawaf bin Nasser Al Thani of Al Nasser Stud. For the third year in a row, an Al Nasser Stud-bred and owned mare has won this prestigious title. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Albidayer Stud, the gelding championship was awarded with prize money and great success. Gold was given to EM Polar, owned by Teresa van Nes. Silver winning LME Raphael is bred and owned by Armada Arabians, while Bronze Champion El Emando, is bred by Michalow and on lease to Stefanie Bovens. It was particularly splendid to meet some old acquaintances, among them champion and champion sire Al Lahab. Accompanied by his owners, Inge and Hansjürgen Friedmann, the 20-year-old stallion received a Lifetime Award. For the first time since her beloved husband, photographer and breeder Erwin Escher, passed away suddenly in 2016, Annette Escher took a step back into the Arabian horse scene. “It was wonderful to see old friends, just sitting relaxed at the table, watching the horses,” she said with a little smile and added, “But I will be happy when I am back home and with my 40 horses again.” Three additional stand-out moments of the ANC included Klaus Beste returning to Aachen in his premier appearance as a judge (once the secretary of Photos by: Arabian Insider Nawaf Al Johaini Henrike Horman Alessio Azzali
the German Studbook and part of the ANC organizing team and moderator); Mertyris Losif’s D Ibn Rasheem winning Bronze Champion Yearling Colt, the first championship for a breeder from Greece; and Shadi Al Khalediah accomplishing Silver Champion Senior Stallion for Reza Allahdahi, another first, this time for an owner from Iran. With the German National Championship taking place on Friday and the German Studbook celebrating its 70th anniversary with a gala night on Saturday, the 2019 All Nations Cup managed well with just two days, putting all of its focus on the Arabian horse. Despite any difficulties, ANC-Manager and VZAP-Chairman Wolfgang Eberhardt and his team kept smiling and remained positive, giving 100% to the organization of another excellent and successful All Nations Cup. Beethoven would have been very pleased. Considering himself a European, the German composer and pianist’s “Ode to Joy” became the Anthem of Europe. Just as his music is inspiring, so too was witnessing this year’s European Arabian Horse Championship, reserved to European-bred and owned horses only, bringing joy to many. Last year, rumors spread that ECAHO was re-thinking the entry qualifications for the European Championships, and the organization made courageous decisions. In its invitation and rules, ECAHO stated very clear, “breeder and owner must be person(s) with European nationality.” They went even further saying “no co-ownership is allowed with a person without European Nationality or a company or a stud farm that is owned by a person or entity without European Nationality.” This, of course, was in hope of getting some European breeders back into the show ring. This decision, however, became the subject of controversial debate. With the rule of not permitting horses bred outside Europe, there were demands that these horses be admitted, as it would ensure a larger target group, but ECAHO maintained its course. Some people raised the concern that the show organizer might have a problem getting major sponsors to finance the show, and excluding owner from outside Europe would affect the number of participants and sponsorships, as well as people attending the show. But this year’s show was able to prove quite the opposite. The Italian stud book organizing the 2019 European Championship found enough sponsors to provide an appropriate framework in Caselle di Sommacampagna, close to Verona. An amazing 121 entries were entered, compared to 2018’s EC, which had 34 less starters registered but without non-European entries. Finally, insistent critics of the new rules suggested that the European Triple Crown—the most elusive and prestigious title—may become an exception. Obviously, it is still theoretically possible to celebrate a Triple Crown winner, but not very likely, as most European breeders would presumably sell a top-quality horse capable of winning the Triple Crown to foreign owners before they would win it. But this argument was not focused on by ECAHO. A HT Abroad

It was Mario Matt Arabians’ MM Alegria who took away Gold Champion Yearling Filly after winning a large class with the highest score of all yearling fillies. This MM Jabari daughter out of Aruba RTA did not come from nowhere. Earlier this year, MM Alegria accomplished Silver at the AHO Breeders Championship. Another Austrian celebrated great success. Ferdinand Huemer of La Movida Arabians was pleased with Sadunga El Marwteyn’s victory in the Senior Mare Championship. In her class of 4-6 year old mares, Sadunga El Marwteyn was bested only by Poganinka, but was one step ahead in the championship. The ZT Marwteyn daughter is a bay just like her dam, DG Sunhari and granddam LM Sadunga. Back in 1995, proud breeder Ferdinand Huemer patted LM Sadunga’s fine neck after winning European Junior Champion Filly. Seeing another mare winning must have given some a sense of deja-vu, experienced by the Polish breeders, especially the stud farms Michalow and Janow Podlaski. Just like the All Nations Cup, the Polish came with excellent mares and garnered Silver and Bronze. Michalow-bred Poganinka, an Enzo and Poganin granddaughter, was awarded Silver, while Janow Podlaski’s Euzona took Bronze. The competition was tough. The high score of all mares, the Ekstern daughter Psyche Kreuza from Chrymmo Palace Stud, Poland, became fourth in the championship, while Shirley Watts’ Ekspulsja, who looks back on a strong season, was not considered by the judges for the championship. Just 5-year-old, Gold Champion Senior Stallion Wortex Kalliste, is an old timer of the show ring, proving European-bred horses are internationally competitive. After winning 2015 European Gold Champion Junior Colt, his breeder and owner, Jennifer Dhombre of France, sent the Shanghai EA son to the USA, where the colt took champion honors in Scottsdale and at the U.S. Open. While leased to Kaheel Stud, Qatar, Wortex Kalliste garnered Gold at the title Qatar International show. Now he is back in Europe and has left the whole Dhombre family speechless with joy. The Silver and Bronze went to Italian farms. The chestnut Cavalli son Invictus, bred and owned by Gianluca Oberti, received Silver just a few weeks after the Italian Nationals where the 5-year-old was awarded Silver too. Bronze winning Feuer Jade is also no newcomer to the show ring, winning his class at the Italian Nationals and Silver Champion in Chantilly earlier this year. The bay Ajman Moniscione son is bred and owned by Ivan Veieder, South Tyrol. Besides breeding, Ivan and his brother Hans, also have a love for trick riding with their Arabian horses. The vibrant brothers entertain horse lovers with their performances European-wide. And there were even more reasons to smile. Christine Jamar of Belgium celebrated the success of the Emerald J son Morgan J in the Yearling Colt Championship. The dam of this Gold winner has been an excellent broodmare for Jadem Arabians with produce like Mississippi J, or Morgan’s full sisters Magnifique J and Mounira J. And Chantal Rigat of France was so proud of her Silver Champion Yearling Colt Mahasin De Cartherey, a son of her beloved stallion R’adjah De Cartherey, in a strong competition. There were many reasons for joy at the European Championship, and most remain confident that ECAHO will remain on course, working for a diplomatic solution between the interests of European breeders and international competitors.

... TAKING IT ALL IN STRIDE
The performance presentation of the Diafra dancing group—elegant ladies wrapped in silvery shimmering dresses and men who impressed with jumps and spins on the sandy bottom—to the sound of traditional Arabic music, reflected the feminine beauty of the straight Egyptian mares and the powerful appearance of the stallions at the Straight Egyptian World Cup (SEWC) in Milan. It was the Middle East that dominated, especially farms from Qatar; sending their best horses to Italia’s fashion capital. Four out of six Gold Champions were won by Qatari farms, while the other two were garnered by Kuwaiti-owned horses. Qatari horses also won the majority of the Silver and Bronze championships. Only a few short weeks after arriving in Europe, Baahir AA was shown in Milan and made his new owner, Rashed Ahmed Al Shaya from Kuwait, as well as his breeder, Ariela Arabians, proud. This young Al Ayal AA son out of Badriyah AA (Nader Al Jamal x Baraaqa AA) garnered Gold Champion Junior Colt alongside Tom Oben. Through his sire and dam, Baahir AA has two lines to broodmare supreme The Vision HG. Another Al Ayal AA son was shown under Kuwait’s flag, too. Asayel Stud’s Sinjaar GB (out of Zoya TT) was named Bronze Champion Senior Stallion. In his tail female line, Sinjaar GB traces back to the famed Adaweya. Al Ayal AA, at 11 years of age, is already a globally influential sire, now on lease in Qatar. Straight Egyptian enthusiasts around the globe are eagerly awaiting his first foal crop out of top straight Egyptian mares. A HT Abroad
Years ago, a gift of royal blood was presented from Asayel Stud to Alaghar Stud of Kuwait. The dearly loved little colt Asayel Raheeb grew to become a proud and powerfully trotting stallion. It was at this year’s SEWC that the Alaghar team was beside itself with joy when the now 6-year-old stallion accomplished Gold Champion Senior Stallion and was awarded Best in Show Male (high score). Sired by Naseem Al Nakeeb, Asayel Raheeb’s pedigree combines the most influential Hanan descendants like Ghazala, Jamil, and Salaa El Dine, with the famed blood of Lutfiah on his paternal side. F Shubani Bint Al Lahab is Asayel Raheeb’s dam, a daughter of World Champion Al Lahab and a granddaughter of champion producer Maysoun. She is traces back in tail female line to the globally influential Rodania. Among the ten senior mares—each one a beauty of her own—which came in front of the judges, the Ansata Sokar daughter Nawaal Al Rayyan stood out. The judges awarded her with a perfect range of 20s for Type and Head and Neck. In total, Nawaal Al Rayyan received 94,13, the high score of the show, ensuring this beauty extraordinaire the Gold Champion Senior Mare title and Best in Show Female award. Her silhouette resembles the best points of her famous ancestors. Out of Nadrah Al Rayyan, she combines the blood of Ansata Samantha with Ansata Sudarra, both daughters of the great producer Ansata Delilah. Al Waab Stud of Qatar was particularly successful as well, winning Gold, Silver and Bronze two times respectively. In the Senior Mare Championship, Al Waab took Silver and Bronze, a notable success as Ghazalah Al Waab and Ghe-

zlan Al Waab are full sisters, sired by Baaraq Al Alia and out of Nabeela Sakr. Like Nawaal Al Rayyan, these mares trace back to Ansata Samantha through her sire and to Ansata Sudarra through her dam. This sire/dam combo is additionally responsible for Al Waab’s Gold Champion Yearling Colt Naaeem Al Waab. The Ansata Delilah branch of Ansata Bint Bukra also works just fine for Al Waab Stud. Their Gold Champion Yearling Filly Shadia Al Waab (Baaraq Al Alia x Shalfa Al Rayyan) is a maternal granddaughter of G Shafaria. From the same branch is Bronze winning Yearling Colt Tajweed Al Waab (Barraq Al Alia x Sara Al Jazira). And rounding out Al Waab’s wins is a different family. Silver Champion Yearling Filly Omsia Al Waab is by Sinan Al Rayyan, and out of Shahira Al Nasser who is out of Reserve World Champion Mare Bint Saida Al Nasser. In all, 57 horses came in front of the judges at the SEWC, reflecting the ongoing dilemma of the entire European show scene. For years, the number

of participants has fallen, and very few European bred and owned horses were among the starters. Despite having quite competitive horses, a strong presence of studs from the Middle East has kept European breeders away. However, the UK farm MH Arabians, celebrated a Bronze Champion Junior Colt win with MH Maarius I (Muhaned Al Rayyan x Maartine), representing the family of RDM Maar Hala.Several German breeders also came to cheer for GE Maysoun (GM Amaretto x GR Maimun), bred and owned by Klaus Buchberger. The recently crowned German National Champion Mare took third place, bested only by Nawaal Al Rayyan and Tribrah Al Shaqab. Many international visitors enjoyed the beautiful straight Egyptians at the SEWC, including Judith Forbis, Cynthia Culbertson, and Eileen Verdieck, ensuring that Milan will continue to be an Arabian destination for years to come.
