CELEBRATING THE ARABIAN HORSE AROUND THE WORLD As we go to print, I can’t help but be aware of how much conflict there is in the world. There is, people seem to agree, more strife now than ever before in my lifetime—or maybe, through the miracle of the internet and social media, we just know more about it. It’s easy to be disheartened.

Then I realize how lucky I am to be involved with Arabian horses. All of us are, of course, just because Arabians are beautiful, noble, loving animals. But they’re more than that. They’re passports to friendship, understanding and appreciation of each other. No matter what, our horses unite us on a national and global level. People today are separated by geographic miles, political beliefs and social customs—but when we come together to celebrate our horses, all of those differences are set aside. We love the Arabian horse. That’s our common ground, our conversation opener, our starting point to discover that no matter what, each of us, like our Arabians, is a diverse, complex individual with much to offer. We’re all human, and our horses can play such a role in reminding us of that. I love being able to produce AHT Abroad. Over the years, I’ve met many people from other countries at Scottsdale or the Nationals or Las Vegas. However, traveling overseas and being able to publish a magazine that explores their lifestyles, their horses, and how the history of the Arabian horse brings us all together has been something even more. It is a joy. We are a community of Arabian horse people. Our community is not defined by Asia, Europe, North America or any country in the world. We all love this breed, and when we meet to honor our horses, we are writing a story that is nothing but positive for the future. I hope you’ve enjoyed AHT Abroad and that you will join us in its journey as an international Arabian horse publication.

The Magic Of

by SUSANNE BÖSCHE

c h easn a town, is a place where a A there is no doubt about its historical significance, or of its current utmost importance in the Arabian world. When S eptember draws to an end and colorful autumn knocks on the door, the All Nations Cup brings magic to the town.

Just like the incomparable and beautiful British actress Audrey Hepburn, when she came to the film set of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” everybody felt the sparkling magic. Like a performance of the Cirque du Soleil, the ANC unfolds its own fascination and is a tribute to graceful, athletic Arabian horses and their breeders’ passion. O nce the presentation of the horses starts, you easily feel the special excitement that only the All Nations Cup offers. Remember the great, unforgettable moments when heroes like Emigrantka, Kubinec, Dorsator, Piligrim, Zagrobla or Vodolje, appeared in the arena, who stood for a second, a minor hesitation only, and than moved like no one else; accompanied by the sound of thundering applause by the audience. It is a “must see” destination: there is fun and fascination, there is music and there are emotions. There are points to be given and there are classes and championships to be won. We unfold a tiny bit of this magic in our special All Nations Cup chapter. We honor six worldwide influential breeders, who were and are important to the show, and highlight more “Equine Annals” of Aachen. Also, enjoy enj the All Nations Cup from the past through the lenses of photographers from all over the world, among them a special tribute to late Erwin Escher and Irina Filsinger, who both left us forever, and memorable moments from those from inside the arena, the handlers; as well as breeders and enthusiasts from all over the globe. Let the show begin! A HT A BROA D

Breeder Profile: There is no question that Judith Forbis is a trendsetter. From the time of her earliest forays to Egypt to acquire her foundation stock, she did something no one in the Arabian business had done to that point. She “branded” her program; she created a mystique to capture the attention of the public. That included everything from adopting the wearing of a turban, which became part of her iconic persona, to adding the word “Ansata” as a prefix of every homebred horse’s name, leaving no doubt as to where their roots lay. Both the full name of the farm p and the Ansata prefix are registered U.S. trademarks. Judi Forbis added the Ansata prefix to the names of the first three yearlings that she imported to America from Egypt; Ansata Bint Mabrouka, Ansata Bint Zaafarana, and the incomparable Ansata Ibn Halima, and she created the Ansata brand around them. Judi invented branding long before anyone else in the industry followed suit.

Judi is a visionary, she’s a wonderfully gifted writer, she’s a successful author. She is also a great breeder, she’s a great friend, and she has great friends in turn. Judi is a passionate person and she’s a business woman. She understands Arabian type, she understands the word “classic,” and she knows how to marry them together with the best of results. She has always been a step ahead of the pack, locating horses that were not always on the public’s radar and adding new blood to Ansata Arabian Stud. We salute Judith Forbis as the wonderful human that she is, the legenda breeder that she is, the great treasure that she is. It is through her legendary passion and dedication there exists the Arabian horse with the “Ansata look.”

Breeder Profile: For over 40 years, Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen was a breeder of beauty. He had an eye for it, and it was the cornerstone of his world-famous breeding program at Zichy-Thyssen Arabians in Argentina. Regardless of what the fad of the day may have been, Count Federico kept a crystal image of his ideal horse … and brought in whatever blood it took to create it. He loved the elegance of the Gainey foundation stallions and used Gaffizon and others in the early years. He had a skill for mixing various strains to create something of a hybrid, similar to the way Wayne Newton established his program. Count ZT was often described as “larger than life” by friends and fellow breeders. He loved his horses and took great pleasure in riding across the thousands of acres of his Argentinian rancho. He loved showing and racing, and he loved steeplechasing!

Count Federico also developed a deep interest in straight Egyptian horses. He bought a number of horses from Imperial Egyptian Stud and also leased and purchased many horses from Ansata Arabian Stud, including the herd sire, Ansata Ibn Bukra and a half-interest in the splendid stallion and sire, Ansata Shah Zaman. In addition to excellent stallions, he had mares that carried strong female lines, such as those of the magnificent Serenity Sonbolah. His collection of horses were all great beauties. Walking into the barn and seeing them all was a bit like opening an amazing Avedon coffee table book of the most glamorous women in the world; each one more beautiful than the next. Great beauties, great horses. Like a mystical alchemist, Count ZT knew exactly what ingredients he needed and just how to blend them to create the “Zichy-Thyssen Arabian.” The ZT brand was a brand of excellence. Count Federico Zichy-Thyssen will continue to be profoundly remembered by all who knew him.

Curious Question Aachen is special and so are you! What special moments do you have from the All Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany? James Swaenepoel Aachen is the best collection of Arabian horses together. Also, the winners are respected from breeders worldwide. It’s not easy to win Aachen, but no matter who owns or shows the horse, your homebred Arabian can win it. We had the luck of seeing AS Natsir Apal, SA Misha Apal, Psytadel, AS Shahwan, Pristinia, and FM Gloriaa win classes or championships. The show has its own All Nations Cup committee and makes decisions for the horses and only the horses.

Sheikh Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Thani with SA Misha Apal

Jane Fraser-Brown MBE For me, Aachen is the finest Arabian horse show in the world. A breeders showcase encompassing all that is professional, well organized and a delight to attend. I remember so well the days before, when grooms slept above their precious charges in the wonderful stables that are Aachen. Over the years, many changes—all progressive—have been for the better. The atmosphere is also unrivaled at any other horse show. My personal finest memory was when my two-year-colt achieved second place here in 2008. Orion OS is a thrice World Top Ten, but for me, Aachen was our finest moment. I have rarely missed an All Nations Cup, and if I could go to only one Arabian show a year, my choice would always be Aachen.

Orion OS

April Visel I love Aachen because it's so intimate! The VIP seats sit close to level with the horses so you can feel the energy and see the veins through their skin! The stands are always full and the energy is amazing! All of that is just icing on the cake, because the quality of horses at the show is stellar. I always looked forward to the mare classes when Poland would attend—it was impossible to pick a winner out of 15 gorgeous white mares, and the energy from the crowds was palpable!

Jan Calis One memorable moment was in 1993 with the DWD Tabasco son, Taladinn, out of Winnetka. He was a black yearling colt who ended up only 4th in his class at the German National Championship the day before the All Nations Cup. Owner Thomas Mayer, told me not to enter the ring with Taladinn, because there was no chance of winning the class, but I was convinced of the colt’s qualities and I was right. We not only won his class, but also the Junior Male Championship. Another emotional moment was in 1994, when I showed the chestnut Spanish-bred filly Braken, by Fakateko. She was three years old and garnered the Junior Female Championship. This mare is very close to my heart and still grazes on our pastures, now 25 years old. Jan Calis with Braken

There was a funny situation in 1995 when I showed the Murmansk son, Dosator, in 1995, who moved like a machine. We did not win the championship, but that doesn’t matter. Mr. Neubacher, the judge from Austria, gave him 21 points for movement – out of 20! Speaker Klaus Beste said, “This is impossible,” but Urs argued that ten year old Dorsator moved better than any other horse he had seen at the show and he deserved these points. Also winning the Handlers Cup, founded by the late Holger Heck, was important for me. It was a good idea—a special competition for the handlers. I liked the idea and donated myself, a bronze for the future winners in 1991.

Handlers Cup Winners

Andreas Letsch My parents established our stud farm in South Germany and I still remember my first ANC in 1981 where my late father, Walter Letsch, showed. Our farm won the Mare Inheritance class that year, a class that no longer exists. The first time I showed a horse by myself in Aachen was in 1986, which was one of our foundation mares, Kaigala, by Ibn Galal. Since then, I have probably shown almost every year up to about 2005, and every year was great and emotional! My most exciting moment was showing our homebred colt FL Sayawan in 2000, when he won his class against Khidar. Although Sayawan did not place in the championships, he went on to become Top Ten Stallion at the World Championships in Paris the year after. The same was with Basara Saiyana in 1993, who I showed for the Blutbachers. She won the Three-Year-Old Fillies class with the highest score of all juniors, and did not place in the championship, but this is the biggest honor for a breeder, to win at the ANC despite winning the championship. The classes are hard enough already! I am also proud of winning the Handlers Cup in 1995 alongside Michalow-bred Fortaleza.

by JEFF WALLACE and THERESA CARDAMONE

In Arthurian legend, the sword Excalibur was a symbol of righteousness, designed to be handled only by the one true King. It is fitting that the moniker Excalibur has been bestowed on a stallion who can easily claim the title of King in the current world of the Arabian horse. Excalibur EA has earned that right both in the show ring and as a sire of champions. And he has done so in spectacular fashion. Not only is Excalibur EA a king, he is owned by royalty, the elegant Princess Laetitia d’Arenberg of Estancia Las Rosas in Uruguay. Forty-five years after her girlhood dream of breeding Arabian horses first came to be, the Princess had the honor of watching Excalibur EA become European Triple Crown winner. He completed the daunting task of winning Gold Championships at the All Nations Cup, the European Championships, and the World Championships, all in the same calendar year, and all earned among the deepest competition in the world. Far from that 2014 achievement being a swan song, Excalibur EA is now poised to make a return to the international spotlight to lay claim to yet another throne.

A HT A BROA D

| 5 | Excalibur ea

His story sprang from much humbler beginnings back in his early days, far away in the United States under the care of Ted Carson. As he quickly developed from a beautiful baby into a striking weanling, it became clear that Excalibur EA was going to be a gorgeous blend of his sire, Shanghai EA, one of WH Justice’s most beautiful and best producing sons, and the Marwan Al Shaqab daughter Essence of Marwan EA. Both Shanghai EA and his son, Excalibur EA, were bred by Albert Sorroca of Equus Arabians in Spain, who also bred Excalibur’s dam, Essence of Marwan EA. Crossing Essence of Marwan with Shanghai allows Excalibur to carry the same female line on both the top and bottom of his pedigree, all the way back to Sahara, who was bred in the Arabian Desert and imported to Poland in 1845. Excalibur EA is the absolute perfect blend of his aristocratic ancestors. His silhouette is sumptuous, with a short, strong back and well laid shoulder, a long hip and level top line, good legs and upright neck, high set tail and beautiful head. His attitude is beyond perfect, he seems to feed upon the energy of the people who can’t help but cheer for him each time he enters the ring. If there has ever been a quintessential contemporary Arabian, it is Excalibur EA. He nails the definition of today’s Arabian show horse. Princess Laetitia relies on the experience and advice of her Arabian horse division manager, Olivia Strauch, to make sure that Estancia Las Rosas is always up to date in the industry, and that opportunities to elevate the breeding program are never missed. She values Olivia’s calm, no-nonsense demeanor and her laser focus on anything that has to do with the farm or its horses. When Olivia saw a photo that Ted Carson had posted of the young Excalibur EA, she knew he was just the stallion prospect that Princess Laetitia had been seeking. Shown by Ted Carson in America, Excalibur EA wasted no time in establishing himself as a horse to be watched… he was named the 2012 United States National Champion Yearling Colt.

Excalibur spent 2013 growing up in the incredible surroundings of Estancia Las Rosas in Uruguay, left to play and breed a number of mares, he became a very well-adjusted young stallion. Olivia Strauch had seen that Excalibur EA was out of the ordinary, and asked her former employer Christine for her expert opinion. Their mutual feeling was that Excalibur was good enough to take Europe by storm as a sire, and also as a show horse. The Princess agreed. In 2014, Excalibur EA was turned over to Tom Schoukens to train and show, and Tom was on the lead during his astonishing sweep of the most prestigious titles in the world. Warming up with gold championships in Ströhen, Germany and at the West Coast Cup in Belgium, he then scored the highest point total ever, at an ECAHO show, lighting up the scoring with a total of 95.33 in Aachen, on his way to earning the Unanimous Gold Champion Junior Stallion title there. Excalibur EA continued to strike down one magnificent challenger after another A HT A BROA D

as the summer moved into autumn. After annexing the European crown, Excalibur EA and Tom Schoukens were called out to center ring as the 2014 Gold World Champion Junior Stallion in Paris, in front of many of Princess Laetitia’s family and friends. It was a fairytale ending to a Princess’s dream. But it seems it is time for another layer of magic. Excalibur EA is poised to conquer yet another continent. Over the past five years, after a mutual friend, the also Uruguayan Dr. Diego Puente first introduced Dr. Ghanem to the Estancia Las Rosas breeding program, a friendship has formed out of mutual respect and trust between Estancia Las Rosas and Dr. Ghanem Al Hajri’s Al Hawajer Stud. Princess Laetitia and Olivia have admired the breeding program of Dr. Ghanem and appreciate what he has accomplished in Sharjah within the very competitive UAE. With an eye to the future, the Princess agreed to lease Excalibur to Al Hawajer Stud. Another Las Rosas stallion, Dominic M (Da Vinci FM x Rosa la Valentina), has also been entrusted to Dr. Ghanem’s care. It is a tangible sign of the deep collaboration between Al Hawajer Stud and Estancia Las Rosas. In some important ways, the teaming of the Princess and the doctor shows key similarities between the farms. For example, where Las Rosas has its remarkable manager Olivia Strauch, Dr. Ghanem and Al Hawajer Stud rely upon their own strong, capable manager, Rebecca Wenden. Similar to Olivia at Las Rosas, Rebecca is somewhat the compass at Al Hawajer Stud, helping her team to achieve their breeding and promotional goals. She was very eager for Dr. Ghanem to lease Excalibur EA, and spent over a year urging the parties to make it happen. At Al Hawajer Stud, he will have a fantastic collection of mares to breed, and is sure to sire many more champions. “I am always looking for opportunities to not only advance my own breeding program, but make great stallions available to the local community here in the UAE,” says Dr. Ghanem. “Excalibur represents the combination of structure, beauty and show attitude I am looking for. All of us at Al Hawajer Stud are looking forward to having a lot of fun with him and I think him crossed over our mares is very exciting.” In addition, he will make his UAE show debut under the Al Hawajer Stud banner and will be handled by Tom Oben, one of the top trainers in Europe and the Middle East. Tom’s quiet style and elegance will be a perfect match for Excalibur. Excalibur EA is bred to be a show horse for today’s halter arena and a sire of tomorrow’s great champions, but he has struck early by already siring several offspring who are winning in the steepest of competitions around the globe.

In 2015, the Excalibur EA son, Alexxanderr, won the very tough Gold Champion Yearling Colt honors at the Mediterranean and Arab Countries Championships in Menton. He continued to win throughout the year, also finishing as the Silver Champion Yearling Colt at the All Nations Cup in Aachen and as the Silver World Champion Yearling Colt in Paris. The foals that Excalibur sired in America are also winning impressive titles, with his son Exxalt earning the Scottsdale International Gold Champion Junior Colt honors the only time shown thus far, and his son, Hidalgo BH, recently winning the 2016 Region 12 Reserve Champion Two-Year-Old Colt title. At Al Hawajer Stud, three gorgeous fillies are providing both the Princess and Dr. Ghanem with tremendous validation of the successful lease and high hopes for the future. If the 2015 foal classes and the foaling stalls of 2016 are any indication, there will be many more Excalibur champions to come. The foals back at Estancia Las Rosas are also uniformly excellent, far exceeding every expectation. All of them are reflections of their sire, carrying forward so many of his near-perfect attributes. Yes, the future is anything but written in stone for Excalibur EA as he begins his new adventures in the Middle East. But just as King Arthur’s mighty sword was unleashed from the stone into which it was thrust by the righteous hand of the One True King, -o will the mighty stallion unleash his glory upon his competition in the UAE. Excalibur EA will continue to garner championships, sire champions, and continue his reign as King.

It is said that lightning never strikes twice in the same spot. If that is a fact, we have no other choice but to appeal to ancient mythology in order to explain the series of unparalleled show ring success achieved by Criadero Medrano, owned by Manuel Durini, in recent times.

Gold. Victory. Success. Words to describe the amazing work developed at Medrano. Indeed, hard work developed for over three decades that, combined with wise breeding choices, led to the creation of the incomparable National Champion Mare of Ecuador and the USA, MD Hibat Allah by DA Valentino, who is truly one of the most exquisite mares alive.

Above: MD Hibat Allah. U.S. and Ecuadorian National Champion Mare. Bred by Criadero Medrano and owned by the Aria Patners LLC.

Left: Mike Wilson and Epiic (by AJ Thee Luca), Scottsdale International Gold Champion Junior Colt bred by Criadero Medrano, and his dam, 2016 Ecuadorian National Champion Mare, Anastasiaa, below with Lucho Guimarães.

Somewhere between the tales of the lost city of Eldorado in the Amazon and the golden touch of Frisian King Midas, we shall find our link to the extraordinary: the initials MD.

Golden is also the color of Hibat’s mother ‘Anastasiaa’ (ATA Bey Starr X Showgirl SP by Shaklans Padron NA), a mare worth her own weight in gold. An undisputed world aristocrat in the making, I must admit that this story was not intended to specifically praise this lovely mare. But after some preliminary research, one can’t help but to realize that her story and the very story of Criadero Medrano are deeply entangled. To start with, before Anastasiaa was brought back to the show ring to claim her 2016 Ecuadorian National Champion mare title, she had already produced two Ecuadorian National Champion mares: MD Psylk in 2011 and MD Hibat Allah in 2015. Very seldom in history does the dam of a national champion mare

become herself a national champion. To be able to do it twice, as far as I know, is unheard of.

The golden touch of Midas did not stop there, nevertheless. Manuel Durini did it once again when he added the sensational bay stallion AJ Thee Luca to his breeding program. Bred by Ajman Stud of the UAE and born in the USA at Wilson Bloodstock, AJ Thee Luca displays a pedigree with the best bloodlines from several countries. He is an unusual non-straight Egyptian stallion (since most of his paternal siblings are straight Egyptians) and yet proof of the value of outcrossing successfully to these ancient lines. He is by the extraordinary straight Egyptian sire Thee Desperado, a Scottsdale Grand Champion and U.S. Reserve National Champion stallion. His mother is the legendary Argentinian import and National Champion HED Caramba, by the great Magnum Psyche out of HED Cajun Queen, a daughter of Cajun Prince HCF, bred in Brazil.

Top right: 2016 Scottsdale International Champion Junior Filly MD Mirka, bred and owned by Criadero Medrano, and her sire, AJ Thee Luca, above.

Further down in his dam line we find the Brazilian National Champion Mare NV Ali Bey and U.S. National Champion Mare Indian Genii. More so, AJ Thee Luca is a National Champion himself and also a winner at Scottsdale and the Egyptian Event.

Thee Luca is proving to be one of the top upcoming sires standing at public stud today. Though his progeny is still very young (his first foal crop was born in 2013), several of them gathered national titles in Ecuador. And since gold is the standard, two of Luca’s babies have already claimed the highest honors in the U.S., also by winning the gold medal at the prestigious Scottsdale International Arabian Horse Show: Epiic and MD Mirka.

Interestingly, both MD Mirka and Epiic also trace to Anastasiaa. Mirka is out of the above-mentioned National Champion MS Psylk (by Padrons Psyche out of Anastasiaa) whereas Epiic is her son. Along with MD Hibat Allah they created a dynasty for Criadero Medrano. Their mare family also traces to the aristocrat mare Klassic (Bask Classix X Khemogina by Khemosabi), who has produced nine champions including national champions Drama Qyeen and TF Queen Ahearts. But it was through Klassic’s other daughter, TF Khouros Girl, that the branch of Anastasiaa came to life.

May the golden glow of Criadero Medrano’s success shine even brighter in the future and draw Arabian horse aficionados from all over the world, to unfold the secrets of this Eldorado of beauty and quality in the country of Ecuador.

WENDELL HANSEN ~ Remembering A Great American Breeder ~ Many of the world’s most beloved Arabian horses have names beginning with the prefix “WH”. Among them are the legendary WH Justice, WH York, WH Patriot, WH Marissa Rose and WHNorthern Yankee. The visionary breeder who created these influential stallions and mare was Wendell Hansen of Wen Hansen Arabians in American Fork, Utah, USA. Wendell Hansen was a remarkable man, a man worth knowing, and if you were lucky enough to have met him, or to be his friend, then you were truly blessed. Wendell Hansen passed away, at his home, on May 10, 2016 at the age of 92. Wendell’s horses forever changed the face of the Arabian horse breed. Everyone who loves Arabian horses owes him a debt of thanks for his dedication, commitment and the legacy he created. Wendell was involved with Arabian horses for most of his life. His first registered Arabian horse is docu-

mented as Bomba (Sikin x Ferdirah) AHR#2332, foaled on January 28, 1942, and bred by the W.K. Kellogg Institute in Pomona, California, and according to the Arabian Horse DataSource, he is the documented breeder of over 400 purebred Arabian horses. I interviewed Wendell a couple of years ago for an article and he described to me his vision of the ideal Arabian horse. Wendell had a deep appreciation for beauty and that was at the top of his list. But, he said, he also valued substance and correct conformation. He wanted to breed athletic horses and he knew that correct conformation was key to accomplishing that goal. Another trait Wendell said he bred for was a kind temperament. He wanted horses that were safe and enjoyable to be around for his children. Wendell Hansen spent more than 70 years following his dream! Along the way, he bred some truly special horses.

Without a doubt, the most famous, the most beloved and the most beautiful horse WenWen dell Hansen bred was the ethereal WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea by El Sher-Mann). Is there anyone in the world of Arabian horses who doesn’t know and love this horse? This is the story of WH Justice, accordaccord ing to Wendell Hansen’s son, Travis Hansen, “Dad had leased the mare Vona Sher-Renea, from David and Jo Anne Goodrich of Salt Lake City, Utah, for several years. Vona was a beautibeauti ful mare with many good qualities and an excelexcel lent pedigree. Dad bred her to Magnum Psyche because he was a five-time national champion and considered the heir to the world famous Padron sire line. The following year, on May 16, 1999, Vona Sher-Renea produced a grey colt. “Dad had 13 foals that year: eight fillies and five colts. We liked Justice very much, but we had five colts and you just can’t keep every foal you breed. Our friend, Fernando Poli, contactcontact ed Thierry and Catherine Kerjean, who were looking for a special colt. Shortly after, they purchased Justice and soon he was on his way to Europe. After the sale, Dad said he was sorry he had not kept some breedings to Justice, because he was certain the colt was going to be a good sire. He sure was right about that! We are very proud of WH Justice and all he has contributed to the breed.”

Another stellar stallion bearing the WH namesake is WH York (Marwan Al Shaqab x WH Moneca Ren by WH Rendishahn) foaled 2006. WH York represents four generations of Wendell Hansen’s breeding. This exciting stallion had a successful show career in America before departing to the Middle East and Europe. He was a U.S. National Top Ten, Regional Champion and Class Winner at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. He also produced National Top Ten Winners and Regional Champions in American. WH York is currently competing at the top shows in Europe with great success. In 2006, WH Patriot (Marwan Al Shaqab x WH Rosette by Magnum Psyche) was also born. WH Patriot represents three generations of the Hansen breeding program. Wendell loved

this handsome bay colt and thought he was really something special - and he was! As a yearling, WH Patriot was Scottsdale Champion Yearling Colt and Reserve Junior Champion, Region 8 Champion Yearling Colt and U.S. National Reserve Champion Yearling Colt. As a three-year-old, WH Patriot returned to the arena and was named U.S. National Top Ten Futurity Colt. In 2016, Wendell decided he wanted to take Patriot back to the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Travis Hansen explained the significance of the show to Wendell and his family, “Dad loved WH Patriot. He was so proud of that horse and when he said he wanted Patriot to go to Scottsdale, we knew Dad would want to go to watch him compete. At 92-years-old, we knew it might be Dad’s last show and we

wanted to make it special for him. Dad always enjoyed the Scottsdale show. He was at the very first show, and he and our Mom, LaVon, never missed it. So we took Patriot to ScottsScotts dale and guess what? He won his class! Not only did he win his class, he was Reserve Champion Senior Stallion – to the World Champion Kahil Al Shaqab! Dad was so happy, so proud, it was just a great time for him and for us as a family. It was Dad’s last show and we will never forget it.” Yet another important stallion bred by Wendell Hansen was WHNorthern Yankee (Northerlei x Miss Crown by Crown Royale, by Bask) foaled in 1986, sold to Fazenda Haras Paulista and exported to Brazil in 1987. WHNorthern Yankee made a name for himself in Brazil as an exceptional sire with National

Champion daughters Yankee Flower’s FHP, Yankee Daisy FHP, and other outstanding offspring. WH Marissa Rose (Magnum Psyche x WH Takara Bey by Bey Shah), was a mare bred by Wendell Hansen that was very influential in Europe. Sold and exported as a yearling, WH Marissa Rose was a class winner at the All Nations Cup in Aachen, Germany. Later, she was purchased by Martine Van Hee of Dion Arabians in Belgium. WH Marissa Rose became the dam of national and international champion My Fair Rose-D, sired by World Champion Stallion Marajj. Marissa Rose is also the dam of multiple champion stallion Hypnotic Ibn Eternity, European Junior Champion Colt, Fever Ibn Eternity and Marwanah Rose-D who is a National Champion.

Wendell Hansen in Las Vegas with family, friends and the world famous stallion he bred - WH Justice.

“ The greatest gifts my father gave me were his time, his wisdom, his love and his passion for the Arabian horse...” Travis Hansen

Although Wendell Hansen loved his Arabian horses and was proud of their accomplishments, his one true love was his beautiful wife of 70 years, LaVon. Together, they were the parents of 13 children, including their youngest child, Travis Hansen. Wendell and LaVon had 60 grandgrand children and 102 great grandchildren. Now that’s a famfam ily! The passing of Wendell Hansen is a great loss to the entire Arabian horse community. He and LaVon brought so much goodness to our business. They were honest, funloving, hardworking people of great integrity and the AraAra bian horse world was better because of them. Fortunately for us all, Wendell’s son Travis is following in his father’s footsteps. When I spoke to Travis about his father, the pain of his loss was apparent. Travis worked side by side with his father his whole life. The horses were a passion and a connection they shared that was deeply personal and that created a very special bond between this father and son. Travis shared some thoughts about his father and the future. “Our family is so grateful for all the support and comforting words sent to us from people around the world. In 2016, Dad’s last foal crop was born. All the new foals will continue to carry the WH – it’s our way of honoring him. In a way, it’s reassuring to look at a pedigree and see his name. My dad is part of history, the history of the Arabian horse, and that is forever.

A HT A BROA D

“Of course we will continue everything Dad established with the horses. Stephanie and I have our business, Travis Training Center, here in American Fork, Utah. I know it’s what Dad would want and it’s what we want for our family. We also have the next generation started with the horses. Our daughter, Blossom, is every bit as passionate about the horses as my dad and I. At 15-years-old, she learned from the best. Every chance she got, she would ask Dad breeding and pedigree questions and he would share his knowledge – his wisdom – with her. Blossom works at the farm every day after school. She halter breaks the foals and she rides every day as well. She started showing in western pleasure and is committed to working on that. “It made Dad very happy and proud knowing his life’s work will continue. He recently told me, “I just wish I had one more lifetime to breed Arabian horses – I think I finally got it figured out.” I guess that’s what it takes, a lifetime to learn about the Arabian horse. It’s a lot of hard work and sacrifice – but it’s worth it. The bond I shared with my dad because of the Arabian horse was unlike any other. I was beyond fortunate to have Wendell Hansen as my father. He was a great man and you could not ask for a better role model. The greatest gifts my father gave me were his time, his wisdom, his love, and his passion for the Arabian horse - these will carry our family into the future.” O

Cover Story:

Mai Aljassimya

To look into the eyes of Mai Aljassimya is to remember why you chose the Arabian horse! You just have to go up to her to touch her, just to get a closer look at her huge dark eyes in a tiny chiseled face, framed by a free flowing forelock. Up close, her sweet and inquisitive nature radiates from her, with a charm that only this breed can possess. Since she was a foal, she has been captivating all who see her and the effect is multiplied when you see her move; an elevated bounce like a deer that shows her perfect balance and natural exuberance.

She is the daughter of Aljassimya Farm’s broodmare supreme RP Miss Surprise (WH Justice x Nefertarji, by Laman HVP), who has now provided the breeding program with the amazing greys, a collection of daughters by different stallions to take the farm to a new level. All share her soft expression, round black eyes, and joie de vivre—all classic characteristics of her sire, WH Justice. Just this one is bay, a mark of her sire FA El Rasheem (FA El Shawan x Virtuosa MLR), who in turn passes through the generations some of the remarkable

qualities of his ancestors, Marwan Al Shaqab, Versace and ZT Shakfantasy. Born in the pastures of 100 Oaks Ranch in California, she moved to Italy last fall. Very lightly shown, she has been out just once to debut as a two-year-old filly in Menton 2016, where she easily won her class and took the Bronze Championship for Fillies. Now she is one of the queens of the stable with Giacomo Capacci in Tuscany, weaving her spell on all who work with her.

Simply stated, the charming community of Santa Ynez, California is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The little town is nestled into the sur surrounding golden hills that are adorned with emerald green, sprawling live oak trees and, depending on the season, vivid yellow-green or blazing red, purple and gold grapevines from the abundant thriving vineyards in the area called the Santa Ynez Valley.

y e l l a V a L Viva The glorious natural beauty of the land and the zen-like serenity of this ultra-cool, low-key little town make it extremely special. So special in fact, that it’s home to numerous Hollywood and entertainment superstars who love the small town ambiance. These Hollywood A-listers are treated like everyone else when they drop into the local cof coffee shop, The Valley Grind, or enjoy an amazing Rancho Vistadores breakfast at The Longhorn. It’s not uncommon to sit next to a mega movie star as you grab a burger at The Red Barn, a delicious Salade Niçoise at the Baker’s Table, a delicate dish of Sole Meunière at Trattoria Grappolo, or an icy cold one at the swinging Maverick Saloon. Just saying – there is amazing food and wine to experience in the valley. This is the Santa Ynez most people know and love, but there’s much more to enjoy – especially if you love Arabian horses. Santa Ynez Valley has an incredibly rich history when it comes to Arabian horses. According to the Santa Ynez Valley Arabian Horse Association’s website, “The SYVAHA began as an Arabian breeders’ club over 30 years ago. It has since evolved into an AHA Region 2 affiliated association that hosts exciting events such as The

Arabian Foal Festival, The Santa Ynez Futurity and The Arabian Breeders Celebration farm tour, as well as other events centered around the Arabian horse.” But that description doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of the world-famous and historically influential Arabians and Arabian horse breeders who have called Santa Ynez their home. Arabian legends such as El Shaklan, Estopa, and Sanadik El Shaklan, Ali Jamaal, Strike, Ruminaja Bahat, Khemosabi, Barbary, Ariston and hundreds more were bred, born and lived in this enchanted valley. Just as the landscape changes with the seasons, so does the Arabian horse community living in the Santa Ynez Valley. We cannot stop change; we must work with it, taking whatever life brings and shaping it into something new, brilliant and beautiful. This takes courage, vision, commitment and perseverance – all characteristics that seem to be shared by the brilliant and dedicated breeders living in Santa Ynez today. Together, they are continuing the tradition of breeding world-class Arabians in this verdant valley. Recently, we visited breeders in the area and enjoyed some quality time with them and their horses…

SILVER MAPLE FARM: On July 28, 29 & 30th, Christie and Henry Metz hosted their first Arabian Adventures by Silver Maple Farm: Arabian Adventures in Art. This unique workshop offered a cultural experience centered around art and the Arabian horse. People came from around the country to try something new – like learning how to draw and paint horses. Thursday evening, Christie and Henry Metz welcomed their guests to a sumptuous gourmet dinner at their home, providing the perfect opportunity to get to know each other. The next day began with Kimerlee Curyl, a wild horse photographer. She spoke about her experiences and how it influences her art. Christie Metz spoke on two subjects that she is equally passionate and knowledgeable about: the breed characteristics of the Arabian horse and the history of the Arabian horse in art. Both of these inspiring subjects are included in Christie’s up coming book. Arabian horse breeder, artist and art

A HT A BROA D

educator Cindy Bevier Hodges presented her theory, “Everyone can draw a horse”, and with her help, everyone did! Of course, some were better than others, but everyone had fun trying. Cindy also demonstrated drawing and painting techniques, which the group attempted with various degrees of success. Augusta Hammock, an artist and designer skilled in a variety of mediums, spoke about creating art with digital technology, an area in which she is incredibly gifted. The workshop also featured gorgeous live equine models. This included a stallion presentation, a pasture walk with mares and foals, and a visit with some young mares. It was fascinating to see the rapport between the horses and the art group. This segment of the schedule accomplished one of the main goals of the weekend – to create a connection between people and Arabian horses. Plans are already in the works for the next big adventure. ALJASSIMYA FARM: Recently, Lara Ames and her mother, Lollie Ames, visited the Santa Ynez Valley and a few of the farms in the area. “I love Santa Ynez,” stated Lara. “It’s so beautiful – it’s almost surreal. I like the small town atmosphere too, it’s quiet and serene, but it has a great energy with all the Arabian horse farms there.” Lara and Lollie called on Bart van Buggenhout, Manager of Aljassimya Farm. “Of course, we’ve been to the Valley before, but it was our first time to visit Aljassimya Farm. Bart gave us a great tour. He showed us a few of their show horses, including Equator who looks fantastic. Then he took us on a pasture walk to see the mares, foals and young horses.

Bart is a pedigree expert - he knew each horse and its breeding. It’s clear that he really cares about the horses because he puts so much thought into every detail. As we walked, he explained they are not breeding just for today. They are thinking ahead in terms of generations and the goals they want to achieve. Bart is doing a great job, from branding Aljassimya in such a cool and elegant way, to managing the farm and overseeing the breeding. He has a wonderful group he works with too: Debra Schlem, Michelle Kelly, Robin Hopkinson, Ashlee Alfreds – they are all tops in the business. We had a great time and look forward to visiting again.”

Bart spends a lot of time in the Valley overseeing the horses and the operations of the business that has become one of the top farms in the world. Santa Ynez is quite a change from Bart’s home in Belgium. How do they compare? According to Bart, “The Valley has both positive things, as well as a few negative things, but nonetheless, it’s living in paradise. It is a wonderful place for the horses and I like the healthy, relaxed lifestyle. Also, the people here are wonderful. They are down to earth and hardworking – especially our team at Aljassimya. “Establishing a farm here in the Valley had some challenges, but we are making progress. We are excited about the 2016

foal crop. Al Ayal AA did a great job – his babies are very consistent in quality, overall well and strongly built with beautiful heads. We also have some excellent results from SMA Magic One, they are exceptionally typey foals with showy attitudes. The Monther Al Nasser babies always have a consistently high quality. Again this year, Monther blessed us with a few stunning daughters. We are looking forward now to 2017… just a few months to go and again the foaling season starts. The main features will be the Al Ayal AA foals and new to our program will be the first Equator babies. “There are always special events we look forward to, such as the upcom-

ing show in New York, NY will be fun. We are also looking forward to the U.S. Nationals with Equator and other AJF horses. Equator is as ready as ready can be, he looks absolute stunning. Ashlee Alfreds has done a superb job conditioning him. We can’t wait … we are ready! We also have two horses for the hunter classes, ridden by our resident handler Nestor Gonzales, who is doing a beautiful job. So we will cheer for our Aljassimyabred horses under saddle too. “In addition, we support our international show horses. We will be presenting AJF-bred horses at the upcoming European shows including All Nations Cup, European Championships and the Salon

du Cheval. Jaal Aljassimya, our yearling colt will go to Aachen with Glenn Schoukens. Jaal has not disappointed us yet, he is getting better and better, and we have high hopes for him. We also hope to send him to Paris together with Mai Aljassimya, the Bronze Champion Filly from Menton. She will be presented there by Giacomo Capacci. She is special to us all and we have high hopes for her as well. “So you see, we have a global presence, from the Middle East to Europe, to the United States. We love having our home base here in Santa Ynez and we enjoy welcoming visitors to the farm. I can honestly say, I look forward to every single day here in Santa Ynez.” X

chestnut filly, peacefully grazing in the sunshine on a pasture, creates an enchanting image. Her beauty entices you to take a step closer. “This two year old filly, bred by Luciano Cury of Haras Boa Vista, Brazil, and proudly owned by Khalid and Abdulwahab Alsayed, Alsayed Stud, Saudi Arabia, has a lot of potential and I am excited to show her,” says her trainer and handler, Glenn Schoukens, who already led her to Silver Champion Junior Filly at the Emerald Trophy in Brecht and Bronze Champion Junior Filly at the Elran Cup in 2016. Success doesn’t just happen. Bint Seduction HBV is by champion maker WH Justice, a remarkable grey representative of *Padron‘s powerful chestnut sire line, adding the blood of *El Shaklan on the dam‘s side. A bold moving chestnut, Seduction HBV herself offers lines to well-known sires like *Aladdinn, Ali Jamaal and Bey Shah. “Her daughter is the even more refined version,” Glenn thinks, “and like her; Bint Seduction is very showy, always the tail over the back and snorting.” Beauty needs attention and so is, Bint Seduction HBV. “Like a princess, she always wants to be spoilt, always wants cuddles and carrots,” says her groom, Jasmin Kennedy, with a big smile. But Bint Seduction‘s grace is a reflection of her sweet character, too. While the sun goes down, and you watch the enchanting filly be petted and led back to the barn by her caring groom, she is an image of ultimate seduction you won’t forget.
