Normally in the first week of the year, one might reflect on the preceding twelve months while looking forward to what is to come. For Arabians International (AI), 2019 will bring with it the reflection of 10 years since its inception. Ten years ago, when AI, initially a vision, was made manifest by Sandro Pinha and Gil Valdez. The first step to all major accomplishments, making it happen. Of course, there is everything to be said for tenacity, hard work and rolling your sleeves up to never quit. AI is certainly a product of that, it goes without saying. But was the success of this world-renowned network foreseen from the get-go? Are the relationships with their horses, with their clients, and their colleagues around the globe the product of something else? Something bigger?

A World of Great Dynamics Arabians International

Story & layout by Jenn Trickey with Beth Ellen Hunziker

Experience … that’s the word. Taking EVERY relationship as a lesson learned. The collection of those lessons leading to immeasurable success. Sandro and Gil have learned from some of the best horsemen in the industry. That is no secret. But when people talk about experience, do they truly acknowledge the importance of all the lessons? All lessons in life are learned from an outcome that worked, and maybe more importantly, didn’t. Learning patience from the impatient horse. Learning humility from the not-so-humble. Learning how to win gracefully from those who have lost badly. Learning good business from those who conduct it poorly. Learning how to treat others from the way you like to be treated, AND how you don’t. “Over the years, Gil and I have learned the key is to listen more and talk less; if you’re always talking, you can’t listen,” Sandro simply states. It seems like a simple concept, but over decades, this practice has defined something bigger. The use of these experiences with their horses, their business and their clients is everything. It would certainly explain the successful repeat customers of AI. These lessons define Arabians International.

The 2018 U.S. National Championships So what is done with this “playbook” of experience? Sandro and Gil have followed it through the careers of some of the most influential horses in the industry, with the most talented breeders in the world. AI uses layer upon layer of background when taking on the consulting role in breeding, opening avenues of domestic and international marketing, and presenting horses to the pinnacle honors of their careers for satisfied clients in not only the United States, but across the globe. And this comes through purely by honesty; one can’t maintain that kind of depth without it.

Many of the AI clients are world-renowned breeders. Their success at the 2018 Nationals, may be a pinnacle event for many horse owners, but to breeders, it’s just the beginning of what is to come. Relationships between breeders and owners within the barn are encouraged by AI, and have proven to be an incredible network.

Now … fast forward “back” to October 2018. The U.S. National Championship Horse Show.

An example of this would be National Champion Arabian Breeders Sweepstakes Yearling Filly Aphrodite ENB. Presented by Sandro, this filly turned the heads of everyone in Tulsa and demonstrates perfectly the harmony of relationships found within AI. She is bred and owned by Psynergy Enterprise Developments, who has long enjoyed overwhelming success with the platform of AI and has enjoyed years of breeding with Om El Arab, who too, enjoyed roses in Tulsa with Om El Benicio (WH Justice × Om El Benecia).

As the last green shavings are being removed from the arenas, stall curtains are being pulled down and the relentless pile of stuff is loaded onto the trailer returning to Scottsdale, AZ, there is an extensive group of distinguished Arabian horse owners and breeders flying home with the most coveted trophies on their laps, while their now, National Champion horses, are also safely loaded on that trailer.

This trifecta doubled down in U.S. National success with the 2018 National Reserve Champion Futurity Colt Atticus ENB (El Nabila B x Om El Benedine, by Sanadik El Shaklan). He will continue to offer great promise for the future, and once again, displays the win-win for everyone involved. Hence an even bigger future is foreshadowed.

Reflecting on that week in particular, exemplifies the overlapping relationships in this network AI has built. Twelve new shiny pieces of “hardware” were proudly displayed at AI’s stalls, but the sense of accomplishment doesn’t stop at just the owner.

“First of all, as we know, the breeding and showing of Arabian horses is a very costly enterprise, even if you have one horse. When we take our horses to the shows, we put them before individuals that have their own unique view of what the ideal Arabian horse looks like. They may not agree with our personal assessment or that of the team. It is a risk we take. With that in mind, being part of an organization that has more to offer than than just winning is very important for longevity of the relationship. Bottom line, we enjoy our relationship with the Arabians International team. Sandro, Gil and Sally work hard to create an environment where all their customers can enjoy the experience, even if winning is not the final outcome. They have created a beautiful environment at the farm to entertain their clients and make a real effort to showcase our horses when we come to visit. Sandro and Gil regularly assist us with herd evaluations and looking at our new foals every summer to determine a plan for each. We also talk about best breeding options as well. We have been very successful in marketing horses with Arabians International and now have horses that they have sold winning or breeding wonderful horses throughout the Middle East and Europe. I spoke with Sandro recently while in Kuwait. He ran into two individuals who had purchased young horses from Psynergy and were marketed by AI. Both stated that they were delighted with the horses purchased and, in fact, they were their favorites! ~ Michael Weinstein

Next is the National Champion Yearling Colt Antares RCF (Barzan Al Shahania x Forever Mi Dream, by Ever After NA), bred and owned by Elizabeth and Jack Milam of Regency Cove Farm. Fairly new to the industry (2011), and having bred less than two dozen horses, Antares was their first foal born at home, and was special from the start. Regency Cove has been clients of AI since 2014 and continues to increase their visibility as breeders through their relationship with the farm. “The horses are always happy and in world-class condition,” says Liz. “Their presentation is always first rate.” The Milams are now part of the club “elite” of U.S. National Champion breeders. Connected to this Las Vegas and U.S. National Champion colt is breeder, client and friend of AI, Lisa Markley. She bred his dam Forever Mi Dream, and her full sister, five-time U.S. National Champion Pitonisa AS (Ever After NA x Psyches Amber Dream, by Padrons Psyche), also prepared and shown to every major win by Gil and Sandro. “I have had the privilege of knowing both Sandro and Gil for over 25 years,” says

be in training or compete, they will let me know. Having a mutual passion for Arabian horses makes us all stronger, better people! Thanks to a couple of wonderful mares, some great mentors, and two of THE BEST trainers and caretakers in our breed, I have reached beyond my dreams! I truly love these guys!”

Antares RCF

Lisa. “I actually first met Sandro in Brazil when he was just a boy! Later when Sandro went to work for Midwest, where Gil was already working, I started showing at the Minnesota Fall Fest. During these shows, we all became close friends. The friendship we have today is built on trust, honesty, respect and a shared passion for Arabian horses. As a small breeder, this means everything to me. With a trusting relationship, I know that I won’t be taken advantage of. With an honest and respectful relationship, I know that if my horses aren’t physically or mentally ready to

Ar abian Horse Times | 6 | Ar abians International

Rounding out the overlapping dynamics of this colt within the family of AI, is the contribution made by the great Padrons Psyche and Ever After NA. Robert and Dixie North of North Arabians have been long-time friends and supporters of Gil and Sandro. Their program shines bright through its affiliation with the farm; once again receiving a feeling of “team” when celebrating a National show ring win pass! “Robert and I have had horses with Arabians I nternational since they first opened their doors,” says Dixie. “Sandro and Gil are very professional, and they really do love the horses. We never worry about our horses in their care, as they have a great barn crew. We just love Sandro, Gil and Sally, and we look forward to many more special times together.”

Aria Qatars Angel

“These guys aren’t only fantastic with all aspect of my horses care, they make it fun. Gil, Sandro and Sally have a great balance that allows their clients to enjoy the time spent with their horses. It is our recreational time. Knowing the horses are safe and happy, allows that time to be pleasurable. It should be that way.” ~ Manny Vierra

On the other end of the spectrum of excellence at the 2018 U.S. Nationals and representing another example of the breeding, marketing and presentation triangle with AI, was the jaw-dropping display of Aria Qatars Angel (Abha Qatar x BHF Dark Angel, by RSD Dark Victory), Friday night in center ring. Owned by world class breeder Manny Vierra of Valley Oak Arabians, Sandro had the honor of showing her mother to Canadian National Reserve Championship honors 18 years earlier in an elite class of 20 horses. A testament to how true quality stands the test of time, and those who recognize it can continue its influence. Manny has traveled the globe for years in the careful selection of his breeding horses, so with great passion, he carefully manages the care, preparation and presentation of his horses’ careers. He comments, “Everyone at AI allows one another to do what they are best at, and it results in real camaraderie in the barn. It propagates and promotes great relationships amongst their clients. They’ve really built an incredible place.”

Al Malikk Giana Leah PCF While champagne flowed for the AI clients within the Tulsa stalls, other examples of this lattice work was enjoyed by outside breeders and friends, highlighted by the Yearling Sweepstakes Colt and the Open Yearling Filly classes. Arabians International marketed the sale of U.S. National Champion ABS Yearling Colt Al Malikk (Shangrila Baltazar x RD Tora, by Vitorio TO), bred by Shangrila Arabians of Chili. His sire, Shangrila Baltazar was imported to the U.S. in 2015 under the care of AI and is now the proud sire of this champion yearling colt. Additionally, the 2018 phenomenon, Scottsdale and National Champion Yearling Filly Giana Leah PCF (Polidoro FC x Aliyah Vision PCF, by PCF Vision), is a 2nd generation PCF Arabians winner bred by Sam Peacemaker. Now owned by Rae-Dawn Arabians. Sire owners, horse breeders, new owners and handlers are now all winners. Both, great outcomes for horses who are now just beginning!

So, when building a network that can offer support and opportunity to breeders and horse owners who travel the world with passion for the Arabian horse, the word INTERNATIONAL is obviously paramount. And from its inception, Arabians INTERNATIONAL has continually focused on that word. From that playbook of knowledge and experience comes an eclectic collection of elements taken from Gil, Sandro and Sally’s travels and relationships near and far; from their facility design, to training techniques, to show and breeding selections. Gil took all his favorite elements from farms around the world to create the physical design and layout of the Arabians International facility, and Sandro frequents colleagues’ horse shows and training farms in Europe, South America and the Middle East looking for that next special something. “One of the hardest things is seeing the hidden potential of a horse when it’s thin, hairy, out of condition, untrained…,” shares Sandro, “but those circumstances can be changed. We look for the traits that do not change, like conformation and the “X” factor. Having an eye for a horse is something that only develops over time with lots of experience. “If we are lucky enough to find a great horse for a client, we may end up training and showing it for them. And the reverse is also true; when we sell someone in a foreign country a special horse, they often want us to come and show it for them. Our marketing, training and showing services have taken us to places we could never have dreamed of, and we try to never take that for granted. “We help everyone from beginners to established breeders achieve their goals in the show ring and in their breeding program. Hector Flores came all the way from Mexico. He knew nothing about Arabian horses but had visited our website and became interested. He sent us an e-mail inquiring about horses for sale. When I spoke to him, I invited him to the farm. We weren’t sure we would ever hear from again, but he did come to visit the farm and that was it—he fell in love! We selected just a couple of horses for him who went on to win at the Arabian Breeders World Cup and at the U.S. Nationals. We mentored him and guided him in his breeding selection. The resulting filly he bred and marketed through us was recently named Israeli National Gold Champion Filly. He was thrilled and we were happy for him. “We’re always looking for horses that will match our clients’ needs or wish list, like a show filly or a broodmare with specific bloodlines. This is not always found in our backyard. Our good relationships overseas help tremendously with that. However, we never push horses on clients. We look for horses that match their goals and if we find something special, we let them know and then allow them to make their own decision. So, visiting breeders around the world to learn what they are doing, where they are successful or not, has become an important part of our business. Some of our most exciting and memorable discoveries have happened when we were visiting small breeders. Finding a hidden gem is one of the most magical feelings in the world.”

In closing ... grateful for every lesson, every client, every friend. “It might sound over-simplified, but we believe much of our success comes from the fact that our horses are happy, which shows in their confidence, attitude, overall health, and well-being,” Sandro concludes. “Seeing their horses happy makes our clients happy, and for us, that means everything. We purposefully keep our business small so that we can give our clients and their horses the attention they want and need. For us, the people we work with are more than clients, they’re friends and some are more like family. So, it’s not just about winning another ribbon, it’s about quality time, and working together. Helping others fulfill their dreams creates an amazing bond. However, mentoring them comes with responsibilities; everything depends on honesty and trust. We know this because throughout our lives, we were very lucky to be mentored and encouraged by some great people; people who helped us to grow not only as professionals, but also as people. Now we are in a place in our lives that we can help and support others and it’s a way for us to pay forward all that we have learned. Both Gil and I feel we are life-long learners, meaning there is always something we can learn from every person, every horse and every experience.”

Dejair Sousa When the Pre-Scottsdale season begins, Gil and Sandro often have additional help, including Sandro’s childhood friend, Dejair Sousa, also of Brazil. Dejair is regarded as one of the top trainers and handlers in South America. Growing up together, Sandro and Dejair have a very close connection, almost an unspoken understanding of the horses, their training and showing techniques, as well as their appreciation for their successes. They are more like brothers than friends and support each other unconditionally.
