An Interview With Blake Skole

What has Razeer Serondella’s Brazilian Nationals win meant to you all? When Razeer was crowned the Unanimous Gold Brazilian National Champion, it validated all of our hopes and dreams, the exuberant amount of research, the months of negotiations and the sleepless nights of planning and preparation. His championship confirmed that we had found the next “great one.” The planning and the dreaming became reality when I was standing in center ring of the Helvetia Riding Center holding the American flag. Brazilian-bred and American-owned, Razeer’s win united two “powerhouse” Arabian breeding countries.

Pictured left: Razeer Serondella, competing

for and winning the 2018 Brazilian National

Gold Champion Young Colt title.

He had a huge fan base in Brazil; what has this support from breeders and trainers from around the world meant to you?

As we ultimately go to shows to receive the opinions of judges, as they are who determine the outcome of the show, it is the breeders and trainers whose thoughts and opinions most affect the breeding career of a stallion. To have both get behind Razeer in the way that they did, it was the ultimate show of respect. Razeer’s fan base in Brazil solidified our beliefs in his future. What made the largest impression on me was the constant comparison to FA El Shawan. Brazil was blessed to have El Shawan for much of his life. Razeer has very large shoes to fill and we are hopeful that he continues to live up to the comparison of such a remarkable horse.

Having just arrived in the United States, please share your plans for Razeer Serondella for this fall and in 2019 beyond breeding. Razeer was imported to the United States in early September, so he spent a majority of the month becoming acclimated to his new home in Kansas City. His first public viewing on U.S. soil was in late September at the Medallion Stallion Service Auction during the Minnesota Breeders Fall Festival. In July of this year, Donna Hentges and Debbie Treadwell from the Minnesota Arabian Horse Breeders club, contacted me while I was in Brazil and they indicated that they were looking for a great horse for Lot #1 of the MAHB Stallion Service Auction. I was asked if there was any possibility that Razeer could be presented at their event, since he is a young stallion fresh off of a Brazilian National Championship. Razeer’s owners and I discussed the opportunity and we felt it would be a great stage, with the chance to introduce him to the Arabian horse world in front of some of the best breeders in the industry. We know it is a very prestigious honor to even be considered, as Lot #1 has always been some of the most notable Arabian stallions. Our primary focus for the remainder of the 2018 year will be preparation for what looks to be a very busy 2019 breeding season. As the breeding season concludes, we will assess how Razeer handled his first breeding year and we will make further determination regarding his next endeavors in the show ring.

Razeer’s amazing pedigree demands it be bred on. What are your breeding plans for him and will he stand at public stud? Razeer will begin his breeding career in the early spring of 2019 and will be open to a limited number of mares initially. Since his breeding career is beginning at a very young age, we will closely monitor his temperament and health and we will do what is in the best interests of ensuring his well-being and ability to be a successful breeding stallion for many years to come.

What are you hoping that Razeer will pass on to his offspring that will set them apart from all others? The ultimate goal is to breed the “perfect horse.” Sometimes, breeding culminates in perfection just within reach. With the right mare and conscious efforts, we believe we will be able to firmly grasp perfection. Top, l-r: Shelby Williams, Bob Quick, Blake Skole, Darath

Smith and Kody Quick; bottom: Razeer Serondella presented as Lot #1 of the MAHB Stallion Service Auction.

Razeer’s quality and conformation are outstanding. His presence is intense and is clearly drawn from the confidence he possesses as he makes an entrance with his head and tail held high. His beauty is obvious, and we believe it will only get better with each passing year.

How was Razeer’s success made possible? First and foremost, Razeer’s owners, Stormy Skye Arabians, LLC. I thank them for entrusting me with his acquisition. Bob, Kody and family have been incredibly encouraging and supportive through this entire process. Often, it is extremely daunting to be a horse trainer. Great people like them make my job so much easier. I know that they will always have Razeer’s best interests in mind. I am blessed to be a member of such a great team. Secondly, Fabio Amorosino of Haras Serondella, for breeding such an amazing horse; thank you! We look forward to the many offspring that will be born and raised at his farm. Royal Arabians played an important role in many aspects of the negotiations that transpired during the purchase of Razeer. Mark Davis and Cindy McGown were supportive from the beginning and were the first to congratulate me upon the win. They also happen to be the current owners of Razeer’s National Champion sire, El Tino. Rodolfo and Natalia Guzzo became part of Team Razeer, and their efforts during this Ar abian Horse Times | 4 | Br azil 2018

process will always be appreciated. Both helped me work through various issues during the purchase, the Brazilian Nationals and Razeer’s import to the U.S. I don’t know what I would have done without having them there to translate for me when I was in Brazil. Travis Rice put an astronomical amount of time and effort into the negotiations and efforts to bring Razeer to the U.S., sacrificing his time at home with his wife Yassna. He also assisted me with much of the promotional work we did during the Brazilian Nationals. I also thank Carlinhos Souza for being the first to inform us of this brilliant, young colt that he saw when he was home in Brazil during the summer of 2017. I also thank my Cedar Heights Farm customers and staff for their patience and understanding during this timely process. I believe that all of us at Cedar Heights Farm will benefit from Razeer’s presence and influence on the future of Arabian breeding. Finally, I thank my friends and family for sacrificing so much of their time with me. The past nine months have been a stressful whirlwind that have left me preoccupied with things other than them. I am fortunate to have such a great group of people around me, who support me and who believe in the future of the young stallion, Razeer Serondella.

David Boggs, Judge: I want to congratulate ABCCA and particularly president Luciano Cury for all the amazing changes made to the Brazilian National Show. While it was always a very nice show in the past, this year it moved up to a “World Class” event and perhaps number one in the world. The atmosphere had a feeling of Paris, Vegas, and Aachen - all rolled into one. Truly, it was fantastic! It was my honor to judge the event with such special friends and knowledgeable horsemen and women. Every championship impressed me as the quality of animals in Brazil is on the rise. The most amazing of all were the Filly and Mare Championships. Wow, wow, wow! While there were many, many beautiful horses that impressed me, I must say one word, “Flora” … O my Lord, she is truly a gift from God. Following the show, we were honored to be included on the Farm Tours, which were thrilling and a real treat for everyone. A special thank you to Claudio and to The First Lady of Brazil, Maria Helena Vidal, for always being there with kindness and friendship. I can hardly wait until I return. VIVA BRAZIL!

Claudia Darius, Judge: I believe changing the date of the Nationals show from November to July, combined with the outdoor arena, gave a huge, new positive impact to the event. The atmosphere was truly amazing – thanks to the outstanding setup and the numerous spectators from all over the world. My favorite championships are always the females and it was the same for this show. We had some very high quality horses in all the classes, but the Senior Mare Championship just blew my mind. I will definitely remember that moment. I really feel that Brazil is becoming like a second home for me as the hospitality is incredible, the organization great, but most of all, the breeders and exhibitors are fair sportsmen. They created a great atmosphere, are respectful, and offer a wide variety of different and interesting breeding programs. Not to forget that a balanced judging panel with true horse lovers and experts made it special. We also had the pleasure of joining the Farm Tours after the show – a brilliant idea as well – which I hope they will continue in the future! Congratulations and thanks again to the whole team – loved it and hope to be back soon!

Mindy Peters, Judge: I had not been to the Brazilian Nationals in 20 years. This year was my return and I was fortunate enough to be standing in center ring as an apprentice judge under Claudia Darius. Thank you, Luciano Cury, for making this possible. To say the energy was high in Brazil would be an understatement. It was a fantastic venue – the connection and thrill of the spectators, owners, trainers and friends was electric. This lasted throughout the entire show and the following week, as we visited several glorious farms, made new friends and viewed their beautiful horses. What a welcome Brazil gave us! The moment I will remember most ... after watching all the mares enter the ring for the adult mare class, I looked at David Boggs and he looked at me. Both of us had tears in our eyes from being overwhelmed by the gorgeous group of mares that we were about to judge. We both said at about the same time, ”Wow, this is spectacular.” What a special moment. Our entire week was an experience I will never forget.

Flavio R. Wanderley, Judge: Judging this year’s Brazilian Nationals was amazing! Sharing the show ring with some of the biggest names in the Arabian horse industry was an honor. We judged amazing horses from great breeders, thanks to special sponsors and amazing handlers. Actually, we had a lot of unanimous decisions in the championships, which was a sign that all the judges were very aligned! Congratulations to our Association board for this year’s innovations – the new outdoor format and schedule with the championships at night – making it very memorable for everyone. The Farm Tours after the show was another special event to enjoy together. Thank you all, for this great honor!

Jorge Concaro, Judge: I would like to thank the Brazilian Arabian Horse Association and Brazilian breeders for inviting me to judge their Nationals. The show facilities were amazing ... better than ever. The organization was impossible to fault and the hospitality towards the judges was impeccable. The quality of horses was at the same level of any other show in the world; therefore, in my opinion, this show is one of the best in the world. The Mare Championship was shockingly outstanding. This was an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life. Finally, I would like to say that it was a pleasure to share the show ring with the other judges. They were a fantastic group of people.

Johnny Downing, Judge: During the show this year, I realized I have been going to Brazil for 40 years. In 1978 and ‘79, I first helped Dr. Aloysio Faria with his Fazenda Fortaleza auctions. It was the first time most Brazilians had seen show clipping and halter stand ups! From judging various shows over the years, to presenting the seminar for prospective judges, my time in Brazil has always been special. This year was no different. I always say Brazil truly is my second home. The horses are amazing and the Brazilian people are beyond compare!
