IN REGION 12, GO FOR THE GOLD ... FIRE AND GOLDD BY M A RY K I R K M A N
“He smiles when he sees me,” laughs Morgan Runyon, who with her mother, Renee Pelzman, owns the 13-year-old Afire Bey V son, Fire and Goldd. Morgan, an experienced national titleist, is well aware that smiling is not a requirement in a breeding sire, but it’s the icing on the cake for her. As an amateur, she appreciates a good personality; as an owner, she loves the special bond she has with the stallion she and Renee acquired a year ago, when they took their Holly Hill Farm to another level: breeding horses that will count in the future. It is not a venture they take lightly. Lifelong Floridians, both have ridden since they were children, Renee in a variety of breeds and Morgan primarily in Arabians. Longtime clients of Dwane Hankins, of Colonial Downs Training Center, their main breeding focus is the English disciplines. Morgan admits she was surprised when her mother suggested that she show her Half-Arabian, Goldd Standard, in amateur halter (“but Mom, we’re not halter people!”). She now marvels at the learning curve in halter presentation and is firmly committed to the fun of diversity. It was Goldd Standard who led Renee and Morgan to Fire And Goldd. An accomplished under-saddle and driving horse with classic good looks, he took to halter immediately. “Digger’s my best buddy,” Morgan explains—and chokes up at the level of emotion he evokes. Last year, he netted two halter national championships at Tulsa. “Literally, he went from the open Half-Arabian Driving class to, 30 minutes later, the AOTH class and took me to my first halter national championship. He’s so game and he has such a great temperament.” When they set their hearts on owning a stallion, they researched pedigrees, records and backgrounds, but found themselves gravitating toward Digger’s sire, who had spent his life at Shea Stables in the shadow of his own famous father. That Tim and Marty Shea finally accepted their offer was a testament to their authenticity. It wasn’t just Fire And Goldd’s conformation (excellent), ability (as proven by the selection of horses he has on the ground), and willingness that distinguish him as a sire. His pedigree is incandescent. By Afire Bey V, from Brassmis, he is a full brother to multi-national champions Afires Heir and Afire Storrm. Ar abian Horse Times | 2 | Spotlight Futurity • 2020
Goldd Standard (Fire And Goldd x Vee Gates)
Renee and Morgan’s background as amateurs is evident in their breeding venture. They appreciate that a great sire can contribute to a number of specialties. There will be foals coming from a national champion hunter (a granddaughter of Hucklebey Berry); an Afires Heir daughter/Apollapalooza granddaughter; and a *Gdansk granddaughter, as well as some Saddlebred mares, to add more Half-Arabian talent to Goldd’s list of national winners. For them, the most important goal is to breed exemplary horses, not just good horses of a particular specialty. “Not everyone wants to do the same thing,” Morgan notes. “If an owner wants to be versatile, we want to breed horses that can be right there with them.”
Morgan says. “To see everyone so incredibly supportive—the excitement everyone had! It was an experience in itself. It meant so, so much.” Renee and Morgan’s Fire And Goldd journey has only started, but it’s apparent that the stars have aligned. It all began with the delightful Digger. “He makes it so much fun,” Morgan smiles. “And really, at the end of the day, isn’t that what it’s all about?” n
“Our intention is to breed horses who perform well and have great temperaments, and are ones that amateurs can ride,” Renee amplifies. “And if they want to show in halter, great, they will be able to do that, too.” They also are attuned to good customer service in the breeding process. Dwane’s crew maintains Fire And Goldd at Colonial Downs, but the reproduction specialists at Equine Medical Center of Ocala take care of collection and shipping arrangements. The division of labor, they find, makes the process easier for mare owners all over the country. It’s all been well thought out, but there is one emotion they couldn’t have planned and for which they are very grateful. Fire And Goldd made his first local appearance at the Region 12 Show and Spotlight Futurity last year, and the enthusiasm was palpable. “It’s the region I grew up in,”
