Grant Krohn ...
Coming Full Circle
by THERESA CARDAMONE
Family Foundations Need high res
Before establishing Krohn Show Horses in Lindale, Texas, Grant Krohn grew up immersed in the Arabian horse business. His father, Blake Krohn, has been a successful trainer and breeder for over 40 years. Grant’s mother, Genna, an expert horsewoman, is from an Arabian horse background as well; her grandfather was one of the founders of the International Arabian Horse Association. Grant’s brother, Jason Krohn, is now well established with his own training business, Oak Haven Farms.
It was on the family farm that Grant’s passion for horses was born. “I grew up on this farm and have loved horses since I was really little,” he explains. “My dad has been a horse trainer for a very long time. I worked for him and for my brother. My mom’s parents were in the Arabian horses too, so I’m a third-generation Arabian horse trainer.” While in high school, Grant “took a little break” from horses, opting to focus on sports. But that detour didn’t last long.

Transitions “I woke up one day and thought, ‘I’ve got something that I love to do sitting right here,’” he recalls. “That’s when I really started to chase it a little harder. I transitioned from working here on this farm to other places where I could learn more before coming back and starting my own training operation.” Grant absorbed every bit of technique and wisdom that he could during a six-month internship with Andy Sellman in Wisconsin. “I got to watch Andy school every horse in the barn as part of my job,” says Grant. “I’m grateful I was able to spend time watching and learning, developing my trade. I’ve always had a passion for the Arabian horse, but being able to follow up on that, move away from home, and do something I love was incredible.” Once high school was in the rear-view mirror, Grant took a position in North Carolina with Rob Bick and Caralyn Schroter at RBC Show Horses. “I worked for them for about five years and loved every minute of it,” he smiles. “I moved out there when I was 18, fresh out of school. My parents have always been a huge part of my life, and Rob and Caralyn filled that role in NC. They were role models in a way that really shaped my life. Rob was a second father to me.” Rob Bick is effusive in his agreement, “We treated him like family, he was like family, and he still is.” Rob avers, “It’s always great to see him and see him doing well. It comes to him pretty naturally, I think. There’s a work ethic, a natural talent and ability, and a great background from his parents that all combine to put a person like Grant Ar abian Horse Times | 186 | Volume 50, No. 4A A
out there. The Arabian breed needs more like him. We have a gap with trainers that are in their 50’s and 60’s and not a lot in between. We need more talented kids to come into this breed. I wish there were more of them.” Rob and Caralyn gave Grant the opportunity to learn a wide variety of riding disciplines to complement his halter skills. “It was a great move for Grant to come and work with us,” Rob states. “It was smart thing to go to a different farm to learn new techniques for his toolbox. We were thrilled to have him because everybody needs help like that! Grant was one of the best employees you could ever have: super-nice, and good with people and horses. You don’t find quality help like that all the time. I think that it was beneficial for us and for him.”

Rob recognized Grant’s halter talents right away and gave him the responsibility of showing the halter string. Back on the farm, Grant got a diverse education in performance training. “When I worked for Rob, I showed mostly halter even though at the farm I worked every horse, every discipline. They are great at western, hunter, English, driving; they’re good at all of it. And I learned all of it. Honestly, I thought when I moved home to Texas that I was going to keep that up. But, of all the disciplines, saddle seat is my number one favorite and halter is number two. Which is great because my dad breeds so many great saddle seat horses!”

Grant has fulfilled his dream in coming full circle to establish Krohn Show Horses back on his parent’s farm. “Now that I’m home, I work hand-in-hand with my dad and my mom just about every day. My dad and I spend a lot of time talking about horses; he is 100% the guy that I lean on. He’s the person that, if I think something is not going right, I’ll have him come down and watch me work that horse. We’ll talk through a couple of scenarios and discuss if we need to change the way we’re working the horse or how it’s shod, or if the horse needs vet work. He has the years of experience that I don’t. I’ve been doing this all of my life, but not to the level that he has. Having my dad be the person I can rely on the most, and spending so much time with him, is great.” Grant was pleasantly surprised when a number of East Coast owner/breeders elected to send their horses to him in Texas. “When I worked for RBC, nobody brought their horses to the farm for me specifically. Everything came for Rob and Caralyn; I was their assistant. As soon as I was out Ar abian Horse Times | 187 | Volume 50, No. 4A A
from under their wings and spread my own, it was amazing to see that people recognized the work I had put in on the East Coast and were willing to send horses to me. Obviously, we have a lot of clients from Texas as well.” With the U.S. Nationals on the horizon, Grant is grateful for the outstanding horses he will show. “I think we’re taking 10 horses to Nationals, including some that are as nice as any horses I’ve ever shown,” Grant enthuses. “Having such a good string for me to take to my second Nationals on my own since I started Krohn Show Horses, and to have that many good ones going, is awesome.”
long as he’s been training them. To him, this is the best horse he’s ever bred. He’s just a beautiful animal and super athletic. It’s a horse we are all proud of. He’s had a handful of babies that are really high quality as well. Having a horse like Patrriot, at my age, is incredible.” Regardless of the results in Tulsa, Grant is grateful for the support Krohn Show Horses is receiving. “Any trainer is only as good as the horses he has,” he states. “We have great clients and great horses, and I am honored that people have chosen me and entrusted me with their amazing animals.” ■
Among those to compete in Tulsa is Patrriot (Rrapture x Showthyme WCA), a stallion bred by Blake Krohn. A 5-yearold, he went Reserve Champion in Junior English Pleasure at Scottsdale. Since then, he has been moved to the country division and will show in Country English Pleasure Junior Horse at the U.S. Nationals. “That’s a really important horse for our farm,” says Grant. “My dad’s been breeding horses as
