by Mary Kirkman With Rinaldo Longuini’s reputation as one of Brazil’s most successful trainers and his considerable achievements internationally, it would be natural to assume that he grew up around horses—that his equine background extends to his childhood and informs his work. In fact, his success is due to his own natural talent, the tutelage of a few accomplished horsemen during the critical start-up of his career, and the good fortune of beginning at Haras Capim Fino, where owner Polé Levy is known for offering opportunities to rising young stars. Longuini was 20 when he first visited Haras Capim Fino in December, 1986. A native of Jaú, about 190 miles northwest of São Paulo, he grew up on a dairy farm and attended college, but confesses that school was not a passion. At the time, he was playing a lot of soccer with his friends and working in the shoe manufacturing industry; it was not until he visited his thenbrother-in-law, trainer Zeze Rodrigues, at Haras Capim Fino that he was introduced to horses. Longuini was intrigued by what he saw, and a week later accepted an entry-level job at the influential Arabian operation. “I didn’t know anything about horses; I had to figure out which halters to use,” he recalls. But the pastoral atmosphere was not unfamiliar to him. “I grew up like this. I have farming 40 | AR ABIAN HORSE TIMES

in my blood.” In the beginning, he mucked stalls, cared for broodmares—did whatever needed to be done—and drove the horse van that took the show string to horse shows. “I liked the competition, the people, the movement, the sales, everything,” he says, “and Polé gave me a chance to learn.” Guided by Rodrigues, he absorbed the basics of schooling horses, and graduated to preparing many of the Haras Capim Fino horses for the ring. It was 1987; that year, he reached two milestones—he married Adriana Cristina Defende and he showed his first horses for Haras Capim Fino. So many Arabians and Half-Arabians were in training there for owner Polé Levy and his clients that Levy allowed Longuini to compete with his personal string. It was not long before Longuini showed client horses as well; for several years, he was part of a team that routinely brought home the highest ribbons at the Brazilian Nationals. It was inevitable that he would eventually seek new challenges, however, and in 1994, with Levy’s blessing and encouragement, he became the trainer and handler for Paulo Machado’s Hafati. At the Brazilian Nationals that year, American Bob Locke observed Longuini working his new show stars, and commented on the trainer’s

talent to Midwest’s David Boggs. Boggs made it a point to check out Longuini’s handling of the Hafati horses, and was so impressed that he invited Rinaldo to the United States to assist with Midwest’s show string at the 1995 Scottsdale Show. The friendship—and business relationship—that began that winter between Boggs and Longuini has endured through the years. “David is like my family to me,” Longuini says simply. Rinaldo Longuini remained at Hafati for three years, adding to his record by exhibiting such standouts as FS Mystique Lady, who opened as 1995 Brazilian National Champion Mare and Gold Champion Filly, and later would go on to add the U.S. National Reserve Championship in 1999 as well. During that time he also supplemented the Midwest training staff each February in Scottsdale, developing his reputation with American halter enthusiasts. He quickly scaled the heights: In 1997, he presented the lovely Europe El Jamaal, already Brazilian National Champion Filly, to the title of Scottsdale Champion Mare. Then it was time to evolve again, and this time, Longuini moved to Wolf Training Center, owned by Flavia Torres and Dulce Rosa Wolf, in Boituva, in the interior of São Paulo state. His tenure with Wolf was no less productive, as he became even better known. Among his top clients at the time was Lady Georgina Pelham, of Haras La Catalina, who has remained with him through the years, providing a steady supply of successful show candidates. “I was very lucky when she walked into the picture,” he says. “It was 1998, and we were at Punta del Este in Uruguay. She was there on vacation. I remember that David Boggs was judging, and my great friend Pepe Villar was there. Manuel Balarini was supposed to show Pepe’s horse, but he had another client, so he told Pepe to use me. Gina was looking for a trainer at the time, so Pepe, David and Polé Levy introduced me. That was very important for me! She became a great client and friend.”

Rinaldo Longuini and Zezé Rodriguez at Haras Capim Fino. Lady Gina Pelham returns the high regard. “Without a doubt, Rinaldo is the most wonderful trainer I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,” she says. “He and his family are truly great and loyal friends to me and mine. He was the one who made it possible for me to buy Legacy of Fame, the famous stallion—and he has bought the most wonderful mares for me in Brazil. I don’t even see them before I buy them. I love him dearly, and he is honest as the day is long. I would trust him to buy anything for me.” In 2000, Rinaldo had come to another turning point. He arranged to lease the Wolf property and open his own operation. At Longuini Training Center, 40 horses are maintained for some of South America’s top Arabian horse owners. Among those who signed on over the years were Fabio Diniz De Avila, of Haras Vanguarda; Jaime Pinhieros of Haras Vila dos Pinhieros; Luiz Rocco of Haras Clio; Salim Mattar of Haras Sahara; Carlos Roizner, of Uruguay’s Haras Los Palmares; Pedro Amaral, of Haras El Madan; Carlos Menezes, of Haras Stigmatas; Umberto Bonini, of Haras Céu Estrelado; Rodrigo Lorenzi, of Haras Das Paineiras; João Sorvilho, of Haras Vale Formoso; and Jorge Selume, of Haras Santa Marta in Chile.

“Rinaldo R is one of best handlers that I have seen in my life, and he is a very honest person,” says Fabio Diniz. “He has shown my horses for more than 10 years, and is part of the success of Haras h ho Vanguarda.” V Va Longuini has won national championships in Brazil, Argentina, LLo Paraguay, Uruguay, Ecuador and Chile routinely, and annually adds Pa in the United States, Europe and the Middle East as well. ttriumphs tr i That has meant a procession of world class horses—so many that it T Th is hard for Longuini to select just a few to mention. That Ri relationship has lasted for 14 years now; since 2005, he has served re as head of Midwest’s halter division. His schedule is packed, as he coordinates show commitments around the world. the farm’s contenders at major American shows from regional level through the national events. Concurrently, he exhibits Midwest’s international show stars, all the while training and showing for his private clients on a similarly-international basis.

Rinaldo Longuini winning Best Handler at the Brazilian Nationals.

“Rinaldo is an inspiration,” says David Boggs. “He loves what he does, and he wears it on his face and in his character every day for all to see. He has a soft feel, and a God-given sense of timing with training his horses that leads many onlookers to ask if maybe ‘horse whisperer’ would be a good term to use in describing him. As a human being, he is jovial, comical and full of life in his walk through these years of fatherhood and family man of Christian faith. “Rinaldo lives in Brazil, but visits us here at Midwest often,” he continues. “We always look forward to his arrival back to Midwest as if it was the very first one (which was more than 20 years ago now). Two words to describe him well to me would be partner and friend.” From his vantage point on the global Arabian scene, Rinaldo Longuini studies halter practices in a variety of venues. “I think the Brazilian schooling halter is the same as America; I learn a lot from America,” he says, and acknowledges a comment from an associate who offers that now American trainers learn from him as well. “I have a love for it; I have my technique, I know what I want from the horse.” He agrees with an observation that the Arabian industry in Brazil seems less money-oriented than in the U.S. “I know the inducement for Arabians in America is a little different, maybe more for the money,” he says, “but we don’t ignore that. I have to work hard—but the Brazilian people le like not only to make money, but to enjoy it. At a show, there may be 15 skyboxes. I go into every skybox to have a beer and talk, and people come into my skybox. When someone wins, we are always hugging and congratulating.”

David Boggs and Rinaldo Longuini.

There is also a slight difference in approach to the Arabian business between the two continents. “South American people buy a mare and think about that stallion they will breed her to,” he says. “They like to breed.” With that creativity, he implies, comes less focus on early sales. For Longuini and his clients, the emphasis is not only on breeding, raising and training excellent Arabians, but also enjoying the lifestyle that accompanies the breed. “I love to enjoy my life,” he says. “I come to my barn when I can and just sit.” There is deep pleasure in being with his horses—just as there is pleasure in answering the questions of his childhood friends a little awed by his equine activities. Rinaldo Longuini marvels at how his life has developed since that day 23 years ago when he first visited Haras Capim Fino. Since then, his distinctly non-horse family has acquired a real presence in the world Arabian business. His nephew Joao Rodrigues trained for Bob and Janene Boggs, and now Joao’s brother Alcides is a handler for Midwest. In Longuini’s own immediate circle, his wife Adriana runs

the office of their training center, and daughter Manuele, 22, rides. Son Lucas, now 14, likes to go to horse shows, but enjoys sharing a love of soccer with his father. “For me, I don’t forget my family and my friends,” Rinaldo Longuini says. “And I have a lot of friends in America too. I like to work but I like to have fun too.” The key to his success? “I like to take care of the horses and be honest with my clients,” he reflects. “I am honest about buying, selling and showing. I have a great loyalty.” ■ OCTOBER 20 09 | 43
