Presenting the Ames Percherons…

Ambassadors of Ames Construction, Inc. A Minnesota-based, family-owned heavy civil and industrial general contractor since the early 1960s, Ames Construction has earned national recognition for its expertise in the transportation, power, water and wastewater treatment, commercial and mining markets.

Ames Construction founder, Richard J. Ames, built the company on the strong work ethic and respect for teamwork that has been passed on to each generation of Ames family members since 1874 when John and Eliza Ames immigrated to America from their native England. Carving out a life as a farm family lead sons George and Charlie Ames to take an interest in the draft horse, more specifically, the proud and powerful Percheron. George went on to breed and show Percherons from 1915 through 1939, and passed his respect for the magnificent horse to his son Chester. Chester, in turn, passed his love of the breed on to his oldest son Richard.

Today, the Percheron serves as a symbol of Ames’ pride with a team of stunning dapple-greys who perform as ambassadors for Ames Construction in competition and shows throughout the United States and Canada.

Because the Percheron is an ancient breed, there is very little documentation about its origin. The breed can be traced back to the southwest region of Le Perche, France. While the exact origin of the Percheron has been lost over time, many old paintings and crude sketches from the Middle Ages portray French knights on grey or white chargers.

According to the Percheron Horse Association of America, “Their mounts were depicted as horses with considerable substance for that time, but without coarseness,” an apt description of the Percheron.

When gunpowder made the warhorse obsolete, the stately Percheron became the horse of choice for pulling heavy mail and passenger stagecoaches over long distances. Not only was the Percheron capable of trotting at speeds up to 10 miles per hour for sustained periods of time, the breed’s tendency toward grey and white coloring made it highly visible at night.

As the railroad began to replace stagecoaches, the Percheron stepped up as the horse of choice from pulling multi-passenger coaches, known as omnibuses, in cities such as Paris. The Percheron was also slowly replacing oxen in agriculture, and as trade and commerce expanded, the sheer power of this amazing draft horse was harnessed for moving large loads from docks and railheads.

Trucks and tractors have long since replaced the draft horse, but the Percheron is still a favorite here and abroad. Its long and storied history continues to capture the hearts and minds of breeders and admirers alike. For the men and women of Ames Construction, the Percheron is a symbol of all that can be accomplished when teams pull together.
